easy or as hard as youwant it to be and here are five commonmistakes made by new users to theplatform number five hardware a lot ofnew users to FreeBSD often assume thatif they go and buy the latest wonder PCrunning the latest chipset etc that youjust stick on FreeBSD and it will workas Windows does and even Linux whichadmittedly has a higher degree ofhardware compatibility well sometimesstruggle with the latest developments intechnology so FreeBSD having a littlebit of lag behind Linux in this respectwill probably not work on your latestrise in PC or whatever there is nowadayswhere it does shine is in hardware thatis slightly older more familiar HardwareI mean eventually the developers onFreeBSD will catch up with the driversand will actually implement many of thethe features found in modern hardwarebut it just takes time and like I saideven in Linux where more resources areput in especially the big commercialvendors so for instance Ubuntu or readup even they are not always on thecutting edge of the latest stuff so whenit comes to hardware it's really best toI would suggest use anything if you muston pre-built systems anything from HP orIBM Lenovo anything like that they havea pretty good track record of runningvery well with FreeBSD and if you go fora more independent set for instancesystem76 now they have a fantastic trackrecord of running Linux alreadypre-installed soor there's a good chance that anythingby them that actually runs Linux or anyof a machine that actually runs Linuxperfectly will probably run FreeBSD aswell the biggest problem I've noticed islaptops now there's a certain amount ofincompatibility floating around forfreebsd and Wi-Fi is not perfect inLinux and it's worse in Ruby SD been thecase there are some chipsets which areguaranteed to work with FreeBSD so whatI would suggest is that maybe by aseparate dongle and use that as yourWi-Fi even better if you can useEthernet but if that's not possible thenit's a little tried and trusted donglethere's a I'll leave a link down belowof a hardware compatibility page andthat will list all the chipsets andvarious whatnot which run are are knownto run with FreeBSD we've graphics cardsthere's not a problem with FreeBSD I Ican't speak 100% for AMD cards I've notI've not run one of them for years or aRadeon card I've not run more than fouryears I mainly use Nvidia and as far asin video girls are freebsd there's notproblem at all the in video the officialNvidia drivers on the from the FreeBSDrepositories are slightly older does itmean that they don't work but there'slike they older but you can of course goto the main and video website anddownload a at a package and then justrun not at a package just a run filethis is like a script you can just dothat and it will install the drivers foryou this is a little bit more workinvolved than just simply PKG or partmaster in it but if that's what you wantif you want the latest ones the latestones i'm running i think there's 418then that's that's certainly somethingto consider but no no as far as graphicscards are there's really not a problemthere sound sound hasn't been a problemwith freebsd for a long time so manyonboard sound drivers well you know it'snot a problemso hardware is it can be an issueprinters sometimes printers well itdepends on the printer I really havegood look with Samsung in HP and I'vehad at HP 1024 I don't know five yearssix years seven years I don't know aboutit a long time it's a laser printer itit works flawlessly and even if you dohave problems with freebsd accessingprinters well one solution would be Idon't know it's not ideal but get alittle Raspberry Pi bong raspbian on itand use that as a printer server it'sminimal power and you could access itusing Kooks so that's a solution so yeahis that keyboard and mouse of coursethere's never no problem there but againit's all aboutif you resource your hardware and do alittle bit of homework just check overall before taking the plunge intoFreeBSD you'll find that if say forinstance you want to build your ownsystem you make sure the parts justcheck the date base and ask about on theFreeBSD forums hell you can even come onthis channel and ask you can puttogether a system that will be fastreliable and will run FreeBSD justperfectlynumber four hand holding FreeBSD likesome flavors of Linux use the commandline a lot there are some Linuxdistributions which keep the commandline and the terminal to a to a minimumbut FreeBSD has never forgotten its UNIXroots and that in the sense that theterminal is an essential part so rightfrom the get-goif soon as you've installed FreeBSD youwill just get a terminal session is justflushing cursor your login that's it andthat can be extremely off-putting butthat's its strength because it allowsyou to you learn you can learn and growand develop your skills with FreeBSD andnot just FreeBSD if you learn it onFreeBSD then you can transfer there areeasily transferable skills into Linuxthere's very the similarities betweenthe two a extraordinary class there arekey differences of course directorystructures some commands little thingsthe philosophy behind them can differ toFreeBSD to a certain extent is very muchit's still Unix at higher it has anindirect heritage of over 40 years buteven though it was officially namedFreeBSD 26 years I know I've never installed archand they're really of no interest andsuch because you can build a system ofyourselfthere's no Software Center and the oneof the most for me personally looking inthe Linux world one of the mostirritating things was all spying atbeginning and supposing one or two ofthe user friendly distributions of Linuxbut the soft West and really started toattack me because some peoplemay that complain that perhaps they're abit elitist or a little bit dismissivethe FreeBSD forums is a great source ofhelp and the people on there some of thecleverest people that you'll ever meetbut they're the rules of the forum's arethat see for me doesn't matter but forthem it does and it keeps an orderlyhouse you know on oddly ship the youhave to format your question properlyand ask it in a professional mannereverything's very professional and so ifyou ask it in the right way and you'recourteous and the question is clear youwill get a clear and courteous answer ifyou if your answer is if your questionis you know I don't know why is whyFreeBSD rubbish and why can't I do thisthen you will I would get ignore andthis is the same as I you know I uh seeyou knowyou will ever get ignored or you'll geta terse answer asking you to rephrase itand I've not a problem with that becausethen it does get you to a certainmindset of thinking about what theproblem is and how you ask the GUI needs atop it doesn't I don't think it so thatit can do thatI'm FreeBSD makes an excellent desktopbut you have to work it do a little bittweaking well that's all part of it isit's just that's what command-line a lot ithasn't forgotten its unique route andthere's no window s creep and that saysit all reallynumber three expecting Windows or Linuxthis kind of ties in as well to the theprevious one number four in the sensethat a lot of new users to freebsdexpect a computer that runs Windows orLinux to just work and again yeah itties into number five it's the down withhardware many stuff in freebsd just workit just works perfectly I've reallynever had a problem with I say apartfrom scanners and Printers but you knowit's not a major problem there's alwaysa solution available and I think if youcome to FreeBSD you'll have a certainreason to come to FreeBSD and if thatreason is strong enough you can do ourCuriosity Shop if you have a reason Ilike a philosophical reason or apractical reason if you have a reason tocome to FreeBSD then something like theprinter all the scanner not working youwill either forgive and just move on anddo so else or you'll find a solution Ihave a solution in FreeBSD if you'regood according or a solution by say forinstance using a it's can a server or aprinter server and that's that's what Idid if you really want to use FreeBSDyou will find a way to use it if yourWi-Fi doesn't work get a dongle or useEthernet I only use Ethernet there'salways aware so expecting a computerthat runs Windows or Linux to just workisn't it you might be looking runs Windowsor Linux should just workhe's not gonna happen again almost tyinginto the T number 5 is hardware andexpecting it to work FreeBSD isn't Linuxand it's not window and again to do wedrivers windows will have the latestdrivers some of them drivers prettymessed up from the manufacturersthemselves and REM discs looks will haveslightly more drivers already been builtin especially if they're open sore backengineered forever you know reverseengineer and previously probably won'tso what might work on the linux won'tnecessarily work in freebsd and whatmight work and we know it there on Linux it eachone of these particular operatingsystems you have to have a mindset ofwhy you're using it and what you expectout of it you know I was working in theworld design a Windows user goes over toLinux and Beria it's Linux because itcan't do this it doesn't do that hehasn't got this not understanding thatyou've made a conscious choice to moveover to Linux a completely you notprovide stability and secure and you canget work done on it what I mean and thisis a big book itit doesn't quite do what you want it todo you plug in a USB stick no pops offokay you want to watch something youwalk play the video all these things areactually achievable once you dig into itbut not out of the box not even when youfirst install a desktop environment andso you start to get bitter you start tothink oh I'm not doing this I want to goback to Linux we worked on Linux and sothey do you just logged in and I werethe same distribution that which youcame over from or a new one and this newone is full of bells and whistles andit's all glossy and lovely andeverything is shiny and it's just it'sgot wallpapers and icons and it's justand that's sometimes I when I seereviews of
