[Music]welcome to another video from explainingcomputers calm into the first anoccasional series where look atalternative operating systems and byalternative operating systems I meanthings other than Windows or Linux orMac OS which you today leash ordevelopmental and specifically in thisvideo I'm going to look at react OSwhich is a free open-source operatingsystem for running Windows applicationsso let's go and take a closer look sohere we are on the react OS website ofreact to s dot org and just a highlightagain react to s is a free open-sourceoperating system with a design basedupon Windows and which is written to runWindows applications natively and ifyou're thinking is this legal well yesit is because they're writing the codefrom the ground up they're writing thecode from scratch so this will give us aperfectly legal three windowsalternative and I say will because rightnow it's in version what zero point fourpoint seven it's very much still inalpha you can't install this as yourmain operating system yet this is allhere so you can evaluate it for testingpurposes or maybe get involved in theproject anyway I'll download excitesworking out and you can see we candownload either a live CD which youcould boot from CD or you can download afully bootable version which I'm goingto do and that will do that and won'tgive them any money right now andhopefully this will give us a file in asecond it will three two one and therewe are and we'll save that to file inthere hope that won't take too longand there we go it's finisheddownloading we can close down the webbrowser they've got the file here we'lljust extract it and there we've got anice soap ready to install font and whatI'm going to do is to run up VirtualBoxwhich you might remember I installed andshowed you a few videos back I'm goingto create a virtual machine in which toinstall thisso what we call it a react Oh s and whattypes are going to be other I think anda unknown sixty bore of it I think andwill do next on that will give it acouple of gig and memory just to be kindand will create a virtual disk whichwill be bigger than that I think so Ican play around with it a bit that'sallowed to go to 32 ish and there we arewe've got a virtual machine and if wenow work that virtual machine we canpick our ISO which was going to be inhere wasn't it and there it is open andstart and it will go away English UnitedKingdom and enter enter we'll take thatas okay for now yep yep okay this is allvery straightforward and we'll installboot up on the hard disk enter and herewe are this seemed to be a quitepainless next always will be fine fornow we're testing it'll do and if wejust click on through and press ENTER tostart the system without entering reactos seems to want us to sort some driversout in maiming up the work even we're ina virtual machine but didn't like thatnevermind I'm not gonna work too muchabout that at this stage our controllerto make her sir up to at least not fullscreen but looking nice and neat on thescreen and there we are running react OSso he round back again and after alittle bit of messing around they'lldetail in the video description I've gotway out 2's running full screen and asyou can see it looks very early windowslike open up say my computer this isvery familiar for those of us who usedto release a Windows 7 in a classic skinor indeed Windows XP if I open up saythese settings in the control panelthis looks so you know remarkablyWindows like again it all the scales andoperators like Windows machine which isa I think rows are nice if we look inthe the menu to see was installed hit bydefault as various accessories these arethe things again up this is veryfamiliar for Windows system rightwindows looking calculator up there sowe act OS a calculator apparently whatelse have we got here we've got um gamesof solitaire which looks some or all thewindows like it comes from reactor Westlogo on the back but basically this is aclearly for solitaire we all know andlovequit twist walk quit from that one canstuck in that today and we've also gothere various accessories which are veryvery familiar to as paint is here andalso we've gotta I think down here andwe've got WordPad as well so this is avery Windows type experience isn't it ifyou like Windows XP you like Windows 7you think you'll like what they're doingwith a react OS however in addition tohaving this standard Windows stuffthey've also got to and here what theycall the Applications Manager if we openthis thing up this basically allows usto install applications a bit like appsin a more modern operating system so youcan see we've got lots differentcategories and there's lots of thingsavailable in these categories even lotsof games and things I luckily lookeddown down there these are largely a opensource thing you can install but that'sstill pretty handy to have it like thisbut there isn't actually a web browserinstalled by default so let's tryinstall the most recent web browserwe've got here which is Mozilla Firefox48 we quickly in style icon see whathappensthey're wearing a pretty standardFirefox install looks very much likewomen story Windows doesn't it it willmake it hot default launch Firefox nowwe went to what things means thatexplore because I don't think it's hereFirefox doesn't know quite where it'sbeen installed does it and can't findthat server but never mindit's got there this seems to be workingfairly well that's just news up thatmight just be a page as an existent inmore cases a slightly older version ofFirefox let's go to laning yes thisseems to be working the front supportsnot bad this is this is ratherimpressive little bit slight thingsgoing on there with a screen reader orthat might be a VirtualBox issue it saysthis is an alpha operating system afterall that's actually working so I'mrather impressed with this it saysFirefox is out of date so it needupdating let's try that see if we canupdate this to a firefox or 52.6 andwe'll try running lout and again thislooks pretty good this is with any ohyes fairly fairly reasonably wants us toclose what's going on already so I willdo that let's try that actually I'll beI'll be good and close other things aswell let's try and give it the bestchance it's now for operating systemlet's see if we can do this upgradelaunch it nowah I think we've hit the point wherealpha operating system has got to usthat was a very nice fluid window sliceexperiment there but clearly we can'texpect everything to work perfectly withan alpha operating system but even soI'm very impressed so far with react OSwell here I am back again and just tolet you know but eventually I got thiserror message was Firefox who told me itwouldn't work I couldn't get this thingworkingeventually I had to reinstall react OSon to a new virtual machine to actuallyget back to where we are now but this iswhat happens when you play youexperiment with alpha software this isall part of the excitement so what Ithought I'd do now is I'd put myPhotoshop 5.5 CD into this machine intothe test rig running this this cable inthis massive wait box with all thesemanuals software used to be very verybig and if I go to my computer you'llsee we've got that a optical drive therewe can open that up and what about Ryeand do here now is to install Photoshop5.5 is older version of Photoshop so Ithink it might have a good chance ofworking in react to s and the criticalthing I'm trying to prove here is we canuse this not just through an open sourcesoftware we might as well use Linux forthat but to use standard Windowsapplications we might have availablewhich you couldn't install and usedirectly natively in Linux says that'sgoing to be the real value of having anoperating system like react OS so let'ssee how this will work I'll just flickthrough the install and there we arewe've seen two other installed which ispretty good and if we go to the the menuyes we've got Adobe Photoshop 5.5 let'ssee if it will launch and there we areI thought it had crashed but it hasn'tit has got there so we are now runningPhotoshop natively in an on Windowsoperating system that is a fantasticsuccess for react so as I'm veryimpressed with this can we open thedocument I've got sitting in C Docswhat seems to be a good JPEG to usethere we are just brought a JPEG intoPhotoshop in react to us isn't thatfantastic so presumably I've got mynormal Photoshop stuff there I can goand pick up a brush sorts it is aversion back is not try remember howthis version worked but it must resumeLee worked at us that's all the goodchoicesChris no no no no let's fix something abit better than that it's not not thatdifferent to what you use Chris surelyhow did we change brush settings herethere must have been a way of doing thatI can't quite remember but um yes itworks and presuming we can can we applyfilters and things maybe we can let'stry and do something this is this isweird of course because the actualharbour arm will be quite good for thereso that's a very rocky effect doesn't itmatter we can yes well there we arethis as you can probably tell I've donethis live for you and it's work thisthis is impressive we're actuallyrunning Photoshop in react OSI really like reactor less it's got agreat look and feel it just gets on withbeing the operating system without beingover encumbered with too much flashystuff with too much graphical stuff wereally don't need which we've seen somany modern operating systems nowadmittedly during my testing of it issometimes lot more like this oneoccasionally it crashed but that's to beexpected it isn't even at version 0.5yet it's still in alpha it still got along way to go to be a final productthis said I think this could beincreased interest in reactorwesen-related initiatives because inJanuary 2020 we see the end of supportfor Windows 7 and a lot of people myselfincluded are still thinking exactlywhere we're going to go when we see theend of Windows 7 where we haven't gotthat operating system available andreact to us would be a great alternativeanywayas also be interested in your viewswhat's of a thought to come into to
