if you were a computer user back in themid 90s chances areyou were using Windows because let's behonest there was really no contest inregards to what the most widely usedoperating system was Windows 95absolutely flew off the shelves when itwas released and by 1996 Microsoftcontrolled over 80 percent of desktopcomputer market share and if you weren'ta part of that percentage then chancesare you were probably a Mac User thenext largest piece of the pie or maybeyou were a believer in os2 theshort-lived collab between Microsoft andIBM that ended in a bitter divorce andthe ultimate downfall of what was apretty promising piece of software butthis video is not about os2 Windows orMac OS and it's certainly not aboutLinux yeah I didn't forget to mentionLinux though I'm sure I'll still getcomments about it anyway today we'regoing to be talking about BOS thelargely forgotten operating system fromthe 1990s sponsored by lenode cloudcomputing from Akamai hello everybodyand welcome back to another video so forthe uninitiated BOS was an operatingsystem developed by the appropriatelynamed B Incorporated and first releasedin 1995. the company itself was foundedby Jean-Louis say whose name may soundfamiliar if you're into vintage Macstuff because he used to be an executiveat Apple until around 1990 and BOS wasdesigned to be vastly different whencompared to Windows and Mac OS while atthe same time being similar enough tomake switching to the operating systempretty straightforward what set BOSapart was its major focus on multimediathe company dubbed it the media OS inthe BOS white paper where they made acase for a new operating system that wasbuilt from the ground up to utilizenewer Hardware features for digitalmultimedia arguing that then modernversions of Windows and Mac OS werebuilt on top of older systems thatweren't designed for this type of worksaying that Windows 95 has its roots inDOS Windows NT and the VAC systemsoriginally designed by deck Mac OS inthe early the ideas of Xerox Park andmock in the labs of Carnegie Mellon bothdesigned in the late 1970s so BOS wasits own thing this wasn't the Linuxdistro and it wasn't based on any otheroperating system that already existedthough it is considered by many to beunix-like and the cool thing was bothIntel and power PC based systems couldrun this thing though it was initiallyonly compiled for power PC becausethat's what based their own Hardwarearound yeah they were a hardware companytoo and they produced a reallyshort-lived line of computers known asbee boxes but these were aimed atindustry professionals instead ofaverage consumers and that combined withthe ultimate failure of BOS as a wholeto grab onto a sizeable portion ofmarket share means that these things areextremely difficult to find but B didtry to get their OS bundled withmachines from other manufacturers andthey were successful in that aseventually BOS came bundled withmachines from Power Computing and moMotorola who were some of the fewcompanies that had Apple's blessing toproduce Mac clones in the 90s though itdidn't come pre-installed these werestill Matt clone's first and foremost sothey ran Mac OS but users got a BOS diskin the box that they could install ontheir machine to dual boot with Mac OSor just wipe the drive and have it asthe sole operating system if they sodesired and while this was certainlygreat for B it didn't really make muchof a difference in terms of increasingbos's market share because this was anoptional thing that the user had to goout of their way to install and even ifevery single user did that theauthorized Mac clone program only lastedfor about a year or so before it waskilled off so B knew that if they wantedto have a chance at capturing asignificant portion of os market sharethey were going to have to Target thelargest portion of that market share ofcourse being Wintel machines and by 1998BOS had been ported to x86 but as youcan probably expect the company had adifficult time getting their OSpre-installed on OEM computers thedownfall of BOS could probably have beenpredicted at a time when Windows waspretty much too big to fail in fact andmaybe not surprisingly B accusedMicrosoft of threatening PC oems withhigher Windows licensing costs toprevent them from pre-installing bos ontheir computers and I don't meanpre-installed as the only OS I mean dualbooted with Windows and this is where Bwas incredibly smart they knew that dueto windows's extremely high market shareNo OEM in their right mind was going toreplace it with another OS on theircomputers even if they weren't going toget a friendly visit from Microsoftafter doing so instead B took theapproach of coexisting with Windows oemscould get a BOS license and pre-installit on their computers alongside Windowsthis way the massive selection ofsoftware and games written for Windowscould still run on these computers outof the box box and at the same timeusers could easily experience bos'smultimedia capabilities and perhaps evendecide to use it as their primary OS ofchoice and to entice oems to do this Bdid not charge them anything to get aPOS license to pre-install on theircomputers it was an excellent strategyto increase B's market share and I thinkif it actually had worked it would havecertainly made up for the Lost royaltiesthat be missed out on but that didn'thappen and I'm sure you saw that comingbecause even though B was in talks witha handful of oems not a single one ofthem agreed to pre-install BOS on theircomputers with the notable exception ofHitachi they put out a press release inNovember of 1998 announcing the FloraPrius 330j line of machines that wouldcome dual booted with Windows and BOSthis was accomplished through two waysthe first was a boot manager that woulddisplay upon booting up the system wherethe user could use whatever operatingsystem they want to boot into and thesecond was an icon placed on the Windowsdesktop that the user could double clickto easily reboot the system into BOSnone of which made Microsoft very happyand according to a lawsuit that b filedagainst them right after Microsoft flewa couple of Representatives to Itachi'sheadquarters in Japan to remind them ofthe windows licensing terms Hitachi toldB that they weren't able to shipmachines with a boot manager thatallowed booting into another OS besideswindows and this is a story that I'msure you've heard many times beforebecause multiple companies accusedMicrosoft of doing the same thing backin the 90s which I don't doubt at allbut what's interesting about this caseis that Hitachi actually ended upshipping these computers with bothwindows and BOS pre-installed they justremoved the custom bootloader so therewas a BOS partition on the hard driveyou just couldn't boot into it unlessyou had a BOS boot floppy so for allintents and purposes these things werewindows boxes and unless the user wentthrough its hideous process outlined byB on their website to install the bootmanager yourself they were going to staythat way all of this means that b wastechnically able to get their OSpre-installed on a single line of Japanexclusive computers despite Microsoft'sbest efforts to prevent it which I thinkis worthy of some praise I asked forthat lawsuit I mentioned Microsoftactually settled out of court with b andagreed to pay them just over 23 milliondollars though they admitted to nowrongdoing big surprise right but thething was by the time B saw any of thatmoney they were already out of businessthough they did pivot to the internetAppliance World for a little while withtheir Bia operating system or Biahowever you want to pronounce it and inan interesting turn of events they werealmost purchased by Apple in the late90s but unfortunately for B Apple endedup buying next instead and we all knowwhere the story goes from there butanyways that's the history for you let'sgo and switch over to my Windows 98 PCand get this thing installed alright sohere we are on the lovely 98 PC becauseof course and the version of BOS we'regoing to be exploring today is R5 whichwas the last officially released versionof the operating system and I sayofficially released because there was aleak of a future version of BOS that uhthat happened in around 2001 which wasaround the time that b was acquired byPalm for around 11 million dollars whichwas far less than the 100 milliondollars plus that they were offered byApple uh but you know hindsight is 2020as they say and uh yeah I figured we'dtake a look at this because this is kindof like bos's last hurray if you don'tcount Haiku which is the open sourcemodern implementation of the operatingsystem that we will probably take a lookat in a future video and what'sinteresting about R5 is well there's acouple of things interesting about it uhthis was split up into two separatereleases you had personal andprofessional the professional versionwas kind of like the main version of BOSthat you had to pay for a license anddistribution was actually handled byindependent companies that b hadpartnered with so for here in NorthAmerica that was gobe software and theygot to put their logo on the box andeverything so yeah good for them uh butthe far more popular version of BOS wasthe personal Edition because this wascompletely free to download and Isuspect this was done to uh kind of tryand increase B's market share similar towhat they try to do with oems so justlike they gave oems free licenses forBOS as a consumer you could get a freelicense to the personal edition of BOSR5 and when you would download it fromBee's website or one of the mirrors thatuh that was hosting it it wouldn't comein an ISO file or another disk image youwould burn to a CD no no no no no nothis was a 45 megabytes exe file thatyou would run from your existing Windowsinstallation and this was done to kindof going back to what I said earlierabout the oems how they tried to uh youknow have BOS run alongside windows andget it pre-installed that way this wasdone so that you could easily installBOS and not affect your existing Windowsinstallation in fact this does not messwith your partition table at all thiscreates a virtual hard drive that itjust stores on your C drive which meansthat it's easily installable and easilyuninstallable if you decide you wantthat disk space back so we're gonna goahead and run this here and this wholething really reminds me of win Linuxthat's an operating system we took alook at last year actually and it's kindof the same thing going on it installsfrom within windows and it creates ashortcut in your start menu where youcould load into Linux and it would youknow exit Windows load into Linux andyou could try it out and you couldeasily uninstall it if you decide youdon't want to use it but anyways here'sthe install wizard we're going to gothrough it we're going to hit yes and itdoes mention right here this is veryimportant about a boot floppy if you'rerunning 95 or 98 it's recommended thatyou make a boot floppy which I actuallywent ahead and did because for whateverreason I cannot boot into BOS bystarting it from within Windows itdoesn't load the operating systementirely so I have to use a boot floppyhere but you know you couldtheoretically anyways just start BOSfrom within Windows it would exitWindows run some dos commands and thenboot into BOS on NT in 2000 you can dothat because these are not dos basedversions of windows they're NT based soyou have to make a boot floppy if youwant to use BOS it tells you to restartwindows before using it for the firsttime so we're going to say next andhere's where you get to choose yourdestination Drive which is important ifyou don't want this to be on yourprimary drive if you want to kind of setaside a separate hard drive like forexample you see I only have over 2 000megabytes of available space so this 501megabyte installation is going to takeup a lot of that and most of this prettymuch all of this is the virtual harddisk file that's 500 megabytes in sizeso if you had a really small hard driveor a hard drive that just had a bunch ofprograms and data on it you might not beable to install this at all but we'regoing to say next that's fine for mehere and it tells you you can name itwhatever you know program group you wantand we're going to say yes install andthere we go simple as that so it asksyou if you want to register which we'renot going to do it's not like we cananyway and sure we'll do the readme fileso the readme file gives you a briefintroduction here it tells you about BOSand you know how it differs from Windowsand it also mentions the limitations ofthe personal Edition because there weresome limitations but honestly not reallyanything significant uh the major thingit touches on twice here there's partone and part two is the disk space whereit just says like hey you know this is a500 megabyte file if you install this onyour windows drive or you've got youknow a bunch of programs going to bereally Limited in space on that drivethe other thing is BOS itself you knowwhen you boot into that it's prettylimited what you can actually install onthere and it also cannot create a swapfile uh in fact it just refuses to do soat all because the hard drive is toosmall so if you didn't have an adequateamount of ram to run the operatingsystem you're going to have a prettypoor experience I've got half a gig ofram in here which is far overkill forthis so I mean that's that's totallyfine it also talks about the fact thatlike this isn't a regular windowsprogram this will shut down Windows andboot into an entirely differentoperating system uh oh and look at thatunlike most window applications that's abit of a typo there we should go aheadand correct that uh and um yeah we'll ohwell thanks notepad for completelyscrewing up the formatting when I hitsave but um yeah one of the other thingsif if we uh find in here uh can we not Idon't think we can actually oh searchhere okay there it is multi-processorsystems this is important BOS 5 personalEdition does not support a computer withmultiple processors I mean you can stillinstall it on it but it can't utilizeboth processors you'd have to get thePro Edition to utilize that but you knowwhat can utilize multiple processors thecloud computing service is offered bytoday's video sponsor everything that b would haveto pay a royalty for to some othercompany like real player to install RealPlayer to have it bundled with their OSSo to avoid having to pay that fee forevery free download of their personalEdition they just strip all that stuffout so there's a few things that are notgoing to be in here but I mean that's tobe expected anyways so we'll close outof that and uh yeah so here you go itcreates a shortcut on your desktop thisis the start menu folder so you've gotyou can create a boot floppy from herestart bos5 got the installer and it alsopops a shortcut right in your start menuunder in this case Sierra utilitiesbecause I've got a half-life installedon here so it pops it right here you canstart BOS 5 and again it does not workin this case for me I'm gonna pop thisdiskette in the driveand we'll go ahead and restart and whichwe have to do anyways it does recommenddoing that uh not just starting BOS fromhere I don't know why it doesn't forceyou to or like come up with a promptthat says you should restart yourcomputer like after the installer isdone doesn't do that for whatever reasonso we're going to restart and we'll letit boot off of the floppy so here it isuh it actually took me a little while toget this working uh one of the issues Ihad is the graphics card you see I hadto pull the dedicated GPU out of thisthing is I'm using the integrated IntelGraphics uh yeah it turns out there's nodriver for this card that I have andthat's to be expected because thisCarter's manufacturing like 0304 which Bwas you know long gone by thenso there's the startup sound uh prettycool sounding if I do say so myself andyou can see that the monitor here cannotactually display the resolution andthat's because uh well BOS uh well as Imentioned before I've got this videosignal split between this Monitor and mycapture device and BOS has uh set it toa refresh rate that this monitor cannotdisplay so if we swap over to my capturefeed here you can see that uh you knoweverything shows up fine and here's thatvirtual memory pop-up that I mentionedthough I do love the Dolton nag buttoninstead of like don't ask again it justsays don't nag so we're going to saythat and we'll just quickly go into oursettings which we have to do by goinghere preferences we're going to go to uhdisplay which is uh earneston displayit's screenand we're going to change this to 60hertz and apply and that should bringthe video signal back up here so therewe go we're going to keep those settingsso this is what you get the first timeyou you load into it it brings upactually the web browser to load a localHTML document and this is just a littlethank you and a readme it tells you toconfigure some stuff here uh networksettings screen settings which we justdid networking it actually doesrecognize uh this card in here and whenyou click on this by the way it doesn'tlike open up the program it brings youto a user's guide here we can click onnetworking to go back to the table ofcontents and you know it tells you youcan read through all this and you got Bmail poor man which is actually the webserver basically that you can host onhere Great Name by the way net positiveis the name of the web browser so we canget some info about this if we want togo in here so uh yeah very you know verygood guide you would definitely want toread through if you were pretty seriousserious about using BOSbut we're just going to kind of explorethe thing the one thing I do want tomention that I found really interestingso time preferences let's go intosettings here again go to preferences wecan actually just click on preferencesto open up kind of like how you can inMac OS how you can view all thepreferences from the Apple menu or youcan just click on the preferences uh orthe settings you know folder sort of toopen them up in their own window uh soyou can do that here as well and if wego to time uh BOS has a bit of a Y2K orin this case a y2k10 bug going onbecause we cannot set the date toanything past 2010 so if I hit this upArrow here it goes to 1965 so if I trylike 2011 2023 it just 2010 that's themaximum year uh yeah but it doesrecognize if we go to network it willrecognize our adapter here and I thinkit is set up or it says not configuredso let's go to settingsum and we're going to obtain settingsautomatically with DHCP make sure it'senabled we're going to say done andwe'll restart networking so we'll closeout of that and now when we open up ourweb browser here which is again netpositive I love that Icon by the way anduh yeah we could go to you knowtheoldnet.com because that's pretty mucha requirement when we do this sort ofthing and it displays totally fine soyeah there it is of course with thisbrowser being super old it's not goingto be able to display like evengoogle.com does not display properlywhatsoever uh so yeah you know you'renot going to be able to really do any uhI mean you could browse you know throughthe old net totally fine but any modernwebsites you're not really going to beable to uh to browse through them at allbut I mean what would you expect thisoperating systems from the mid to late90s but talking about the interface hereyou can kind of see as I've been openingstuff up this looks uh radicallydifferent from anything you've probablyseen in Windows Mac OS or even Linux theway that the title bars work becausethere's not really a title bar at allyou have more of a title tab so you knowI've got this preferences window herehere's the applications I can open upthe home folder I can open up thepersonal Edition which is kind of likethe hard drive the the root folder ofsorts where you've got apps demos POSdevelop home preferences uh some of thestuff we already have open and the waythis is designed to work is it's whereyou can basically layer windows on topof each other so I could layer theapplications window right on top ofpersonal Edition and then what I coulddo is hold down the shift key and I candrag this tab to wherever I want on thewindow so I could drag it like righthere next to personal Edition and now Icould easily swap between these windowsbut you know these are still separateWindows one of the things where I feelBOS kind of dropped the ball with is itwould have been cool if they had youknow made it to where you could havetabs like I could drag this window intothis here and have it be two separatetabs in the same window to where when Imove this around everything moves aroundthat's in this window and it turns outthat Haiku which is again the modernimplementation of BOS actually does thisso you can drag like a window here intothis and it would just add that as a tabto this existing window whatever theapplication is whether it's the webbrowser the file browser anything youcan all just make it into a singlewindow which is super cool and yeahfunnily enough this video actuallystarted out as a haiku video then I waslike you know what I should probably doa BOS video first before I do Haiku butyeah that's the way that this works sowe can just you know hold shift and dragthis back to the far left you can dragit to the far right if you want andthere's also no minimize button on thistitle tab here so you've got a closebutton over here and this right herewill resize the window to like the signso basically where it will displayeverything uh in one go so like if thisone was resized like this I could easilyjust click this to resize it to where Ican see everything you can minimizestuff by just double clicking on the taband that actually minimizes it to what'sknown as the desk bar which is basicallyboss is taskbar sort of thing going onover here so this is its defaultposition so I can click tracker here andI can open up preferences and there itis I can close out of it and trackerwill still stay here this is kind of thefile browser so like if I open apersonal edition if I were to go intothe applications listing and open uplet's say the web browser again netpositive will show up I can double clickon that double click on that to minimizeit and there it is this really gives mea Next Step feel just the way that uhyou know this sidebar over here worksthere's no dock or anything like youhave in Next Step but what you can do ismove the desk bar around so if you wereused to Windows and the way that thestart menu and taskbar functioned wellyou could just drag this down here atthe bottom and now you've got kind oflike a start menu because you click theBOS menu you can get to yourapplications your preferences and all ofthat if you're a Mac OS user and use tothe menu bar you can just drag them tothe top and now you've got kind of anapple menu over here and again you dohave your applications that the displayhere so I'm going to actually leave thisdown here because I'm definitely used toWindows I'm used to always going down tothe bottom left to you know get my listof programs uh so we'll view the aboutinfo so you know versionr.5.0.1 uh from May 26 of 2000 is whenthe kernel version was compiled it givesyou a running time or here how muchmemory you've got available to you andthe CPU and platform and copper info andall of that one thing that BOS had thatboth Mac OS and windows did not have atthis time is multiple desktops orworkspaces as they're called in herewhich is a pretty common name for themso if we go into preferences here and weopen up workspaces it brings up a littlewindow where we can easily swap betweenworkspaces what's also kind of neat iseach workspace can have a differentresolution and refresh rate so if yousee now uh this monitors is saying thatthe video signal is out of range againlet's say that I want to set thisworkspace to uh 1024 by 768 at uh 60hertz so we'll apply that and now itwill display on this monitor of coursewe'll say keep and now if I go toworkspaces and I swap back to my firstone it will resize back to the 640 by480 resolution that we were runningunder that workspace so that is prettyneat so if you had like an applicationthat needed to run at a specificresolution or a specific refresh rateyou could easily just have a separateworkspace dedicated for just runningthat application and you can runeverything else under another workspaceso yeah there's a little run through ofthe way that the interface is designedlet's go ahead and take a look at someof the programs you already exploredsome of them but with BOS being a reallymedia Centric OS you're going to findthere's a ton of well media Centricprograms in here we're going to startwith 3D mix and that's something I can'treally demo because I don't have anylike interface that can hook up to thisbut this is a mixing utility thatactually displays each track as as if wego to show hide mixer here it displayseach track in like a 3D graph that wegot going on here which is super cool solike if I add a new track there it is Ican move it around I can rename it uhthough I think we have to do that fromthe uh you know actual track listinghere so I can rename this like you knowtrack one and there we go now if I goback to the mixer it'll be named trackone and yeah so it's like a 3Drepresentation of each track I wassearching around for some sample mediathat I could use in this just to demo itand uh I did come across one site thatlinked to another site that had some ofthese files unfortunately the site thatit linked to is no longer up and eventhough there is an archive of it in theway back machine uh the actual downloadlink to the file itself that has notbeen archived there were like five ofthem and none of them have have beenarchived so they've just been lost thetime unfortunately but what we can do isjust make a bunch of tracks here newtrack new track new track new track newtrack new track new track new track newtrack and then we can go to our uh a 3Dview here and yeah it just it just kindof looks like uh you know like a barlike a 3D bar graphum but I just like the way that it youknow represents everything and you canyou know move it around you can changeyour view I have never really messedaround in a program like this I meanI've messed around in GarageBand that'sabout it and um but yeah I just I mean Ithink this is kind of neat so um yeahthat's a little like non-demo of a 3Dmix there uh we've got B mail this isthe email program uh we've got a cameraprogram for importing uh files from acamera you've got a CD burner a CDplayer as well[Music]so there it isand turn this volume down a little bitnowPOS you can see when I when I doubleclick on another audio file it doesn'tjust open it up in the existing playerit opens up another instance of it BOSwas designed to to pretty much havemultiple multimedia streams going at thesame time so like I can be playing bothof these like I'll play this and thenI'll play this oneand like that's totally possible itplays them both at the same time whichof course is gonna sound greatthis one's like overpowering the otherone here but yeah that is one thing likeif you look at you know demo videos ofBOS they always have like a bunch ofstuff going on they've got like a videoplaying and audio they got like a bunchof stuff uh and that's just toillustrate that like yeah that's whatthis OS was capable of of course A lotof it would also depend on what Hardwareyou have but the point that BOS wastrying to make is that uh you know withtheir operating system it was more ableto take advantage of newer Hardwarefeatures than Windows was at the time towhere it could actually accomplish thiswhereas Windows would struggle with itbut I do have some more sample files ifwe close out of all this and we Mountthe windows hard drive so if you rightclick on the desktop you go to mount andyou see this no name hard drive righthere this is my windows Drive which isyou know again the drive that thevirtual disk file is stored on so I cango in here and in the desktop folder oron my desktop rather so if we go to seewindows and we go to desktop luckily youcan also click on a file and type a namejust like you can in Windows to easilyfind what you're looking for I've got afilter called BOS stuff now in here I'vejust copied a bunch of random things Ido have a few like WMV files in hereum once I copied them over I realizedthat BOS actually predates the wmv fileformat so you these I mean I could tryto open this up in media player and it'snot going to open up so you know it saysunable to play but I've got a midi inhere I've got a couple images I've gottwo mp3s and we could just open these upyou know get party.png we can getchess.png this is these are bothwallpapers from Windows 3.0 actually wecan open up let's see Acid Jazz this isa track that I use as background musicin a lot of my videos so we can havethat going we could open up a passporton Mid as well have that start goinglower the volume maybe a little bitand uh we can open up this other audiotrack hereand you can see I can have all thisgoing of course it sounds superobnoxious and one of the cool things toolike with this uh Midi player here if Iclose out of it Watch What Happens I'mgonna turn the volume up a little bitthen I'm going to close out of itit doesn't just stop abruptly it doesthat nice fade out and I think it's thesame with the media player hereno it's not the same with the mediaplayer okay but yeah let's go back intoour applications here and take a look atsome other stuff a couple other thingsthat I want to highlight uh we alreadytook a look at the Midi player uh poorman this is uh an interestingly namedweb server program basically so I canselect uh organized hit default tocreate a public HTML in my home folder Ican do that and uh now I should be ableto so it's starting up if I were to hopover to my capture PC and type that IPin my web browserI can go to it it's on the web serverjust says that it can't be found becauseI don't think there's an Intel anin-text anindex.html file in the public HTMLfolder so if I go back to here and we gointo home and public HTML okay yeahthere's nothing in here so we're goingto make a new uh actually can we notmake a new uh file right from here yeahwe can't like make a new text documentor anything so we're going to open up uhlet's go to Applications here we shouldhave a text editor in here of some kinduh styled edit maybe yeah that'll workso let's uh just make a really basic uhHTML page here boom look at that so yeahthat's pretty nice you had the abilityto host a web server with poor man hereweb definitely relates to multimedia andthis was kind of the the rise of the webyou know this was the mid to late 90s uhso that was definitely very useful ifyou wanted to set up a really quick anddirty web server you know right fromyour computer BOS have thatfunctionality build Timuh so let's go back here to Applicationsuh one thing I do want to demo is pulsewhich is another kind of a widget ofsorts this is a CPU usage graph itactually shows that I have an IntelPentium 3 at 600 megahertz uh that is myprocessor speedum I've mentioned this before but thisis a 733 megahertz Pentium 3 but becauseof the motherboard that I'm running ituh down clocks it to 600 megahertz andthe motherboard I do not want to changebecause is the only original part uh ofthis 98 PC well that and the powersupply so I'm trying to keep thoseoriginalum at least for now maybe I'll I'llupdate it at some point but uh yeah soyou kind of have these applications thatare sort of widgets that can just kindof stick on your desktop you can'treally resize this unfortunately but Icould have this here I could open upworkspaces as well this is another goodone to have I could have that maybe uphere yeah so you'll see whenever Ilaunch a program here like I launchednet positive here watch the graph it'llSpike up and then we'll kind of hoveraround you know one to four notches orbars there whatever you want to say anduh yeah oh you know I guess I could havejust gone to the to the uh web serverjust you know right from here just youknow access the files locally butwhateverum so yeah net positive web browser Midiplayer media player we took a look atmagnify is a magnification program uh soyou can easily just you know it makesyour mouse and do a magnifying glass youshould be able to change the size ofthis uh oh you can decrease the windowsize okay so that's nice so it's altminus and ALT comma so if we do altcomma this should decrease yeah like theactual pixel size so that's controlledwith alt uh comma and period and thenthe window size is all plus and minus soif you want this to be kind of small andyou want it to be you know maybe youdon't need it like that much of amagnification but you want it maybe likethat and you have it here and then youcan easily get a you know a nice littlemagnified we gotta up that a little bitand get a good magnified look atwhatever your your cursor is looking atso yeah another sort of widget typeprogram now the installer this here ishow you can actually install BOSpersonal on a dedicated partition onyour drive so if you really liked BOSand you wanted to use it as your primarysystem or if you wanted to dual bootwith Windows but you wanted a largerpartition more than 500 megabytes youcould uh choose whatever partition youwant to install it to here of course itdoesn't show anything else because wehave to go into the partitioning setuphere now I can't format it because it iscurrently mounted so if I go up here touh unmount no nameuh now I should be able to uh yeah Icould format it if I want to which I Idon't want to do because I would ratherkeep my Windows 98 installed and you cansee now it shows up here so yeah if youwanted to install Vos as your primaryoperating system on the computer therewas no stopping you from doing that oneof the cool things too is BOS came witha sort of an app store called softwarevalet and this would allow you to uhbrowse of course none of this is upanymore but you could browse forsoftware so you could go to the shophere it just opens up in net positive Ialmost forgot the name of the browseragain and then you could manage thesoftware you already have installed getupdates if anything's available uh youcould go to download this is yourdownload manager if you can see whatyou're currently downloading uh you caninstall if you have uh like a local copyuh like something on a on a floppy diskor CD you could open the installerthrough here and uh you just you knowopen the package file whatever it mightbe be and configure you can choose whereyou want downloads to be if you want touse a proxy server registration all thatgood stuff so yeah that's definitely aneat addition as well something thatWindows certainly did not have you alsohave a TV program if you had a TV tunerbuilt in which we do not in this case soit says I can't find a video input butyeah you could use a TV tuner we alreadytake a look at the text editor thereexpander this is just a uh it's calledexpand-o-matic you can decompressarchives basically BOS also offered agood amount of customizability if we gointo preferences here so you can firstof all change the background which Imean you you would definitely expectthat right from really any operatingsystem you can also change the fontsaround if you want you know let's seehere this font oh that looks lovely andthere's no like apply button if you'venoticed that everything just kind oftakes effect uh instantly now I assumethat's the default font for like if weopen up this and start typing yeah youyou can see that the oh yeah the tab andstuffchanges there you do have a few screensavers in here you can enable them youcan choose when you want it to run andwe do have a couple modules I reallylove this buy now one check this out itjust is it's just a flashing buy nowuh so they really wanted you to buy thisum but you do have some cool ones I meanyou have this one that turns the screenblack I mean Super basic not thatexciting but you've got like superstring here which you know definitelygives me a Windows XP Vibe I feel like II've seen like you know this whole uhline bar graph not bar graph just theseries of lines moving around I'vedefinitely seen something like this inWindows XP you've got lenswhich is one that just kind of goes overyour desktop so yeah there you go iconsjust random like BOS icons just appearyou see it'll change every time so thereyou go this definitely gives me an afterdark Vibe no doubt you got your virtualmemory settings if we were actually ableto create a swap file which again wecannot because the hard drive is toosmall and there's also if you've noticedin here under demos we do have a coupleof demo applications one of them isMinesweeper which just looks likeWindows Minesweeperum so you know I'm just gonna clickaround like randomly here oh my gosh I'mliterally just clicking around okaythere we go that was I was just clickingaround randomly with no Rhyme or Reasonof that I should not have gotten thatmany things cleared uh but yeah you gotMinesweeper I think if you go to abouthere it just says by Robert Pollock likebig deal I love thisthis is like yeah big deal guy you madea Minesweeper who the heck caresum you got a font demo uh which isbasically it's like a real time like youcan type stuff in change the font youknow move it all around oh look at thatyou can change the spacing the kerningum oh yeah we want that outline oh yeahcheck that out dude that's incredible soyeah and you can cycle fonts too whereit's oh that's awesome so yeah you canhave this just going in the backgroundmaybe can we actually type out yeah wecan look at that as it's still changingfonts we can have that running why don'twe open up a GLT pot so we can have thisgoing you can see we got a frame counterhere so that's going in the backgroundand we also have chart in here which isa demo in the form of like a spacetravelsimulator maybe is the best word I don'tknow it kind of reminds me of like theflying Windows screen saver just withstars instead of flying windows so I canset this to like fast motion draw bitmapand there you go and we can you know addsome colors here we can add all these wecan uh add some comments novas so thereyou go and you're gonna set it to Autodemo as well which is kind of like movesaround which yeah this could definitelyfunction as a screen saver as well ifyou really wanted to but they just haveit in here as a demo so if we hit Escapeit should uh or click yeah we clicked itout of it and yeah again all this isrunning at the same time you see we'renot really we're not losing any frameshere versus had a solid 60 frames persecond and you can see our CPU is likemaxed out but you know it can handle allof this and again of course because Iknow people will say well that's becauseof your Hardware yes obviouslyum but you know this is something thatBOS was designed to do it was designedto be able to handle multiple uh videoand audio streams and just have all thisstuff running at the same time with uhyou know pretty pretty decentperformance especially if you're runningthis on like bbox Hardware or a machinewith dual processors like you'd be ableto do pretty well you'd be able tohandle a lot this operating system wasdefinitely ahead of its time and ithonestly sucks that it had the Fate thatit did but the good news is thanks tothe Haiku project the spirit of BOSlives on in the modern day and honestlyif you want to try out BOS just getHaiku it's much easier to work with itcan be installed on a Modern Hardware soyou're gonna have a much easier timegetting that up and running so uh yeahand as I mentioned earlier this videowas originally going to be a video onHaiku and then like halfway throughwriting the intro script I was like youknow it would make sense for me toactually talk about BOS because I wasalready going into a bunch of likehistory about it so yeah I definitelystill want to do a video on Haiku and ifyou guys want to see that be sure to
