strategy</text><text start="323.16" dur="4.44">to increase B's market share and I think</text><text start="325.68" dur="4.14">if it actually had worked it would have</text><text start="327.6" dur="5.159">certainly made up for the Lost royalties</text><text start="329.82" dur="5.04">that be missed out on but that didn't</text><text start="332.759" dur="4.141">happen and I'm sure you saw that coming</text><text start="334.86" dur="4.86">because even though B was in talks with</text><text start="336.9" dur="5.88">a handful of oems not a single one of</text><text would</text><text start="361.5" dur="4.02">display upon booting up the system where</text><text start="363.72" dur="3.6">the user could use whatever operating</text><text start="365.52" dur="4.019">system they want to boot into and the</text><text start="367.32" dur="4.02">second was an icon placed on the Windows</text><text start="369.539" dur="4.321">desktop that the user could double click</text><text start="371.34" dur="5.04">to easily reboot the system into BOS</text><text start="373.86" dur="5.04">none of which made Microsoft very happy</text><text start="376.38" dur="4.74">and according to a lawsuit that b filed</text><text start="378.9" dur="4.2">against them right after Microsoft flew</text><text start="381.12" dur="4.5">a couple of Representatives to Itachi's</text><text start="383.1" dur="4.74">headquarters in Japan to remind them of</text><text start="385.62" dur="3.9">the windows licensing terms Hitachi told</text><text start="387.84" dur="3.359">B that they weren't able to ship</text><text start="389.52" dur="3.78">machines with a boot manager that</text><text start="391.199" dur="3.84">allowed booting into another OS besides</text><text start="393.3" dur="3.3">windows and this is a story that I'm</text><text start="395.039" dur="3.6">sure you've heard many times before</text><text start="396.6" dur="4.14">because multiple companies accused</text><text start="398.639" dur="3.78">Microsoft of doing the same thing back</text><text start="400.74" dur="3.72">in the 90s which I don't doubt at all</text><text start="402.419" dur="4.681">but what's interesting about this case</text><text start="404.46" dur="4.56">is that Hitachi actually ended up</text><text start="407.1" dur="5.099">shipping these computers with both</text><text start="409.02" dur="6.179">windows and BOS pre-installed they just</text><text start="412.199" dur="5.28">removed the custom bootloader so there</text><text start="415.199" dur="4.921">was a BOS partition on the hard drive</text><text start="417.479" dur="5.28">you just couldn't boot into it unless</text><text start="420.12" dur="5.04">you had a BOS boot floppy so for all</text><text start="422.759" dur="4.56">intents and purposes these things were</text><text start="425.16" dur="4.319">windows boxes and unless the user went</text><text start="427.319" dur="4.32">through its hideous process outlined by</text><text start="429.479" dur="4.681">B on their website to install the boot</text><text start="431.639" dur="5.221">manager yourself they were going to stay</text><text start="434.16" dur="4.62">that way all of this means that b was</text><text start="436.86" dur="4.38">technically able to get their OS</text><text start="438.78" dur="5.34">pre-installed on a single line of Japan</text><text start="441.24" dur="5.04">exclusive computers despite Microsoft's</text><text start="444.12" dur="4.139">best efforts to prevent it which I think</text><text start="446.28" dur="3.84">is worthy of some praise I asked for</text><text start="448.259" dur="3.901">that lawsuit I mentioned Microsoft</text><text start="450.12" dur="4.38">actually settled out of court with b and</text><text start="452.16" dur="4.8">agreed to pay them just over 23 million</text><text start="454.5" dur="5.099">dollars though they admitted to no</text><text start="456.96" dur="4.98">wrongdoing big surprise right but the</text><text start="459.599" dur="3.901">thing was by the time B saw any of that</text><text start="461.94" dur="3.659">money they were already out of business</text><text start="463.5" dur="4.259">though they did pivot to the internet</text><text start="465.599" dur="4.921">Appliance World for a little while with</text><text start="467.759" dur="4.621">their Bia operating system or Bia</text><text start="470.52" dur="3.299">however you want to pronounce it and in</text><text start="472.38" dur="4.02">an interesting turn of events they were</text><text start="473.819" dur="5.16">almost purchased by Apple in the late</text><text start="476.4" dur="4.799">90s but unfortunately for B Apple ended</text><text start="478.979" dur="3.78">up buying next instead and we all know</text><text start="481.199" dur="4.021">where the story goes from there but</text><text start="482.759" dur="4.56">anyways that's the history for you let's</text><text start="485.22" dur="4.68">go and switch over to my Windows 98 PC</text><text start="487.319" dur="6.121">and get this thing installed alright so</text><text start="489.9" dur="6.12">here we are on the lovely 98 PC because</text><text start="493.44" dur="5.4">of course and the version of BOS we're</text><text start="496.02" dur="5.459">going to be exploring today is R5 which</text><text start="498.84" dur="4.919">was the last officially released version</text><text start="501.479" dur="4.741">of the operating system and I say</text><text start="503.759" dur="5.88">officially released because there was a</text><text start="506.22" dur="6.179">leak of a future version of BOS that uh</text><text start="509.639" dur="5.4">that happened in around 2001 which was</text><text start="512.399" dur="5.401">around the time that b was acquired by</text><text start="515.039" dur="5.641">Palm for around 11 million dollars which</text><text start="517.8" dur="5.28">was far less than the 100 million</text><text start="520.68" dur="5.159">dollars plus that they were offered by</text><text start="523.08" dur="5.4">Apple uh but you know hindsight is 2020</text><text start="525.839" dur="3.901">as they say and uh yeah I figured we'd</text><text start="528.48" dur="3.72">take a look at this because this is kind</text><text start="529.74" dur="5.88">of like bos's last hurray if you don't</text><text start="532.2" dur="5.22">count Haiku which is the open source</text><text start="535.62" dur="3.779">modern implementation of the operating</text><text start="537.42" dur="3.419">system that we will probably take a look</text><text start="539.399" dur="3.301">at in a future video and what's</text><text start="540.839" dur="3.841">interesting about R5 is well there's a</text><text start="542.7" dur="3.66">couple of things interesting about it uh</text><text start="544.68" dur="3.779">this was split up into two separate</text><text start="546.36" dur="3.78">releases you had personal and</text><text start="548.459" dur="4.261">professional the professional version</text><text start="550.14" dur="5.28">was kind of like the main version of BOS</text><text start="552.72" dur="4.679">that you had to pay for a license and</text><text start="555.42" dur="4.14">distribution was actually handled by</text><text start="557.399" dur="4.261">independent companies that b had</text><text start="559.56" dur="4.26">partnered with so for here in North</text><text start="561.66" dur="3.66">America that was gobe software and they</text><text start="563.82" dur="4.26">got to put their logo on the box and</text><text start="565.32" dur="5.82">everything so yeah good for them uh but</text><text start="568.08" dur="5.22">the far more popular version of BOS was</text><text start="571.14" dur="4.319">the personal Edition because this was</text><text start="573.3" dur="4.38">completely free to download and I</text><text start="575.459" dur="4.32">suspect this was done to uh kind of try</text><text start="577.68" dur="4.2">and increase B's market share similar to</text><text start="579.779" dur="4.921">what they try to do with oems so just</text><text start="581.88" dur="5.579">like they gave oems free licenses for</text><text start="584.7" dur="5.04">BOS as a consumer you could get a free</text><text start="587.459" dur="4.5">license to the personal edition of BOS</text><text start="589.74" dur="4.56">R5 and when you would download it from</text><text start="591.959" dur="4.5">Bee's website or one of the mirrors that</text><text start="594.3" dur="4.979">uh that was hosting it it wouldn't come</text><text start="596.459" dur="4.761">in an ISO file or another disk image you</text><text start="599.279" dur="6.961">would burn to a CD no no no no no no</text><text start="601.22" dur="7.78">this was a 45 megabytes exe file that</text><text start="606.24" dur="5.279">you would run from your existing Windows</text><text start="609" dur="3.779">installation and this was done to kind</text><text start="611.519" dur="3.421">of going back to what I said earlier</text><text start="612.779" dur="4.68">about the oems how they tried to uh you</text><text start="614.94" dur="4.5">know have BOS run alongside windows and</text><text start="617.459" dur="3.541">get it pre-installed that way this was</text><text this does not mess</text><text start="625.68" dur="4.56">with your partition table at all this</text><text start="627.899" dur="4.62">creates a virtual hard drive that it</text><text start="630.24" decide you want</text><text start="636.6" dur="4.02">that disk space back so we're gonna go</text><text start="638.88" dur="4.2">ahead and run this here and this whole</text><text start="640.62" dur="4.62">thing really reminds me of win Linux</text><text start="643.08" dur="5.4">that's an operating system we took a</text><text start="645.24" dur="5.159">look at last year actually and it's kind</text><text start="648.48" dur="3.96">of the same thing going on it installs</text><text start="650.399" dur="4.741">from within windows and it creates a</text><text start="652.44" dur="4.8">shortcut in your start menu where you</text><text start="655.14" dur="3.84">could load into Linux and it would you</text><text start="657.24" dur="3.36">know exit Windows load into Linux and</text><text start="658.98" dur="3">you could try it out and you could</text><text start="660.6" dur="3.06">easily uninstall it if you decide you</text><text start="661.98" dur="3.24">don't want to use it but anyways here's</text><text start="663.66" dur="3.9">the install wizard we're going to go</text><text start="665.22" dur="3.6">through it we're going to hit yes and it</text><text start="667.56" dur="4.08">does mention right here this is very</text><text start="668.82" dur="6.36">important about a boot floppy if you're</text><text start="671.64" dur="5.16">running 95 or 98 it's recommended that</text><text start="675.18" dur="3.36">you make a boot floppy which I actually</text><text start="676.8" dur="4.86">went ahead and did because for whatever</text><text start="678.54" dur="4.739">reason I cannot boot into BOS by</text><text start="681.66" dur="2.82">starting it from within Windows it</text><text start="683.279" dur="3.421">doesn't load the operating system</text><text start="684.48" dur="4.5">entirely so I have to use a boot floppy</text><text start="686.7" dur="4.62">here but you know you could</text><text start="688.98" dur="4.08">theoretically anyways just start BOS</text><text start="691.32" dur="3.72">from within Windows it would exit</text><text start="693.06" dur="5.76">Windows run some dos commands and then</text><text start="695.04" dur="5.94">boot into BOS on NT in 2000 you can do</text><text start="698.82" dur="4.199">that because these are not dos based</text><text start="700.98" dur="4.08">versions of windows they're NT based so</text><text start="703.019" dur="4.741">you have to make a boot floppy if you</text><text start="705.06" dur="4.08">want to use BOS it tells you to restart</text><text start="707.76" dur="2.94">windows before using it for the first</text><text start="709.14" dur="2.699">time so we're going to say next and</text><text start="710.7" dur="3.18">here's where you get to choose your</text><text start="711.839" dur="3.421">destination Drive which is important if</text><text start="713.88" dur="2.94">you don't want this to be on your</text><text start="715.26" dur="4.44">primary drive if you want to kind of set</text><text start="716.82" dur="5.4">aside a separate hard drive like for</text><text start="719.7" dur="5.94">example you see I only have over 2 000</text><text start="722.22" dur="4.859">megabytes of available space so this 501</text><text start="725.64" dur="3.18">megabyte installation is going to take</text><text start="727.079" dur="4.141">up a lot of that and most of this pretty</text><text start="728.82" dur="4.5">much all of this is the virtual hard</text><text start="731.22" dur="4.08">disk file that's 500 megabytes in size</text><text start="733.32" dur="3.84">so if you had a really small hard drive</text><text start="735.3" dur="3.96">or a hard drive that just had a bunch of</text><text start="737.16" dur="4.08">programs and data on it you might not be</text><text start="739.26" dur="3.54">able to install this at all but we're</text><text start="741.24" dur="3.599">going to say next that's fine for me</text><text start="742.8" dur="3.9">here and it tells you you can name it</text><text start="744.839" dur="4.68">whatever you know program group you want</text><text start="746.7" dur="5.16">and we're going to say yes install and</text><text start="749.519" dur="3.781">there we go simple as that so it asks</text><text start="751.86" dur="2.88">you if you want to register which we're</text><text start="753.3" dur="4.26">not going to do it's not like we can</text><text start="754.74" dur="4.8">anyway and sure we'll do the readme file</text><text start="757.56" dur="3.839">so the readme file gives you a brief</text><text start="759.54" dur="4.2">introduction here it tells you about BOS</text><text start="761.399" dur="4.921">and you know how it differs from Windows</text><text start="763.74" dur="4.02">and it also mentions the limitations of</text><text start="766.32" dur="3.959">the personal Edition because there were</text><text start="767.76" dur="4.62">some limitations but honestly not really</text><text start="770.279" dur="4.021">anything significant uh the major thing</text><text start="772.38" dur="4.5">it touches on twice here there's part</text><text start="774.3" dur="4.2">one and part two is the disk space where</text><text start="776.88" dur="3.42">it just says like hey you know this is a</text><text start="778.5" dur="3.42">500 megabyte file if you install this on</text><text start="780.3" dur="3.24">your windows drive or you've got you</text><text start="781.92" dur="3.3">know a bunch of programs going to be</text><text start="783.54" dur="4.5">really Limited in space on that drive</text><text start="785.22" dur="4.14">the other thing is BOS itself you know</text><text start="788.04" dur="3">when you boot into that it's pretty</text><text start="789.36" dur="4.56">limited what you can actually install on</text><text start="791.04" dur="5.4">there and it also cannot create a swap</text><text start="793.92" dur="4.2">file uh in fact it just refuses to do so</text><text start="796.44" dur="4.32">at all because the hard drive is too</text><text start="798.12" dur="4.2">small so if you didn't have an adequate</text><text start="800.76" dur="2.879">amount of ram to run the operating</text><text start="802.32" dur="3.84">system you're going to have a pretty</text><text start="803.639" dur="4.44">poor experience I've got half a gig of</text><text start="806.16" dur="3.359">ram in here which is far overkill for</text><text start="808.079" dur="3.481">this so I mean that's that's totally</text><text start="809.519" dur="3.781">fine it also talks about the fact that</text><text start="811.56" dur="3.6">like this isn't a regular windows</text><text start="813.3" dur="3.06">program this will shut down Windows and</text><text start="815.16" dur="3.6">boot into an entirely different</text><text start="816.36" dur="5.159">operating system uh oh and look at that</text><text start="818.76" dur="4.379">unlike most window applications that's a</text><text start="821.519" dur="5">bit of a typo there we should go ahead</text><text start="823.139" dur="6.061">and correct that uh and um yeah we'll oh</text><text start="826.519" dur="4.361">well thanks notepad for completely</text><text start="829.2" dur="4.379">screwing up the formatting when I hit</text><text start="830.88" dur="7.32">save but um yeah one of the other things</text><text start="833.579" dur="5.76">if if we uh find in here uh can we not I</text><text start="838.2" dur="3.48">don't think we can actually oh search</text><text start="839.339" dur="4.74">here okay there it is multi-processor</text><text start="915.779" dur="5.641">that's not a keyboard shortcut in here</text><text start="918.3" dur="4.8">um there are a few uh programs and</text><text start="921.42" dur="4.2">features that have been removed this is</text><text start="923.1" dur="4.679">basically everything that b would have</text><text start="925.62" dur="4.26">to pay a royalty for to some other</text><text start="927.779" dur="4.461">company like real player to install Real</text><text start="929.88" dur="5.28">Player to have it bundled with their OS</text><text start="932.24" dur="5.02">So to avoid having to pay that fee for</text><text start="935.16" dur="3.84">every free download of their personal</text><text start="937.26" dur="3.9">Edition they just strip all that stuff</text><text start="939" dur="3.48">out so there's a few things that are not</text><text start="941.16" dur="3.96">going to be in here but I mean that's to</text><text start="942.48" dur="4.919">be expected anyways so we'll close out</text><text start="945.12" dur="4.019">of that and uh yeah so here you go it</text><text start="947.399" dur="4.081">creates a shortcut on your desktop this</text><text start="949.139" dur="3.901">is the start menu folder so you've got</text><text start="951.48" dur="4.44">you can create a boot floppy from here</text><text start="953.04" dur="5.039">start bos5 got the installer and it also</text><text start="955.92" dur="4.2">pops a shortcut right in your start menu</text><text start="958.079" dur="3.721">under in this case Sierra utilities</text><text start="960.12" dur="3.24">because I've got a half-life installed</text><text start="961.8" dur="4.5">on here so it pops it right here you can</text><text start="963.36" dur="5.88">start BOS 5 and again it does not work</text><text start="966.3" dur="4.74">in this case for me I'm gonna pop this</text><text start="969.24" dur="5.64">diskette in the drive</text><text start="971.04" dur="5.64">and we'll go ahead and restart and which</text><text start="974.88" dur="4.259">we have to do anyways it does recommend</text><text start="976.68" dur="3.959">doing that uh not just starting BOS from</text><text start="979.139" dur="3.121">here I don't know why it doesn't force</text><text start="980.639" dur="2.64">you to or like come up with a prompt</text><text start="982.26" dur="2.28">that says you should restart your</text><text start="983.279" dur="2.881">computer like after the installer is</text><text start="984.54" dur="3.479">done doesn't do that for whatever reason</text><text start="986.16" dur="4.739">so we're going to restart and we'll let</text><text start="988.019" dur="5.701">it boot off of the floppy so here it is</text><text start="990.899" dur="4.8">uh it actually took me a little while to</text><text start="993.72" dur="5.039">get this working uh one of the issues I</text><text start="995.699" dur="4.801">had is the graphics card you see I had</text><text start="998.759" dur="3.541">to pull the dedicated GPU out of this</text><text start="1000.5" dur="3.899">thing is I'm using the integrated Intel</text><text start="1002.3" dur="4.38">Graphics uh yeah it turns out there's no</text><text start="1004.399" dur="3.541">driver for this card that I have and</text><text start="1006.68" dur="5.099">that's to be expected because this</text><text start="1007.94" dur="7.819">Carter's manufacturing like 0304 which B</text><text start="1011.779" dur="3.98">was you know long gone by then</text><text start="1016.699" dur="5.161">so there's the startup sound uh pretty</text><text start="1019.1" dur="4.62">cool sounding if I do say so myself and</text><text start="1021.86" dur="3.719">you can see that the monitor here cannot</text><text start="1023.72" dur="5.219">actually display the resolution and</text><text start="1025.579" dur="5.041">that's because uh well BOS uh well as I</text><text start="1028.939" dur="3.9">mentioned before I've got this video</text><text start="1030.62" dur="5.459">signal split between this Monitor and my</text><text start="1032.839" dur="5.701">capture device and BOS has uh set it to</text><text start="1036.079" dur="4.62">a refresh rate that this monitor cannot</text><text start="1038.54" dur="4.62">display so if we swap over to my capture</text><text start="1040.699" dur="5.041">feed here you can see that uh you know</text><text start="1043.16" dur="4.019">everything shows up fine and here's that</text><text start="1045.74" dur="3.96">virtual memory pop-up that I mentioned</text><text start="1047.179" dur="4.921">though I do love the Dolton nag button</text><text start="1049.7" dur="3.78">instead of like don't ask again it just</text><text start="1052.1" dur="4.14">says don't nag so we're going to say</text><text start="1053.48" dur="4.74">that and we'll just quickly go into our</text><text start="1056.24" dur="5.819">settings which we have to do by going</text><text start="1058.22" dur="7.5">here preferences we're going to go to uh</text><text start="1062.059" dur="5.281">display which is uh earneston display</text><text start="1065.72" dur="3.959">it's screen</text><text start="1067.34" dur="5.76">and we're going to change this to 60</text><text start="1069.679" dur="5.221">hertz and apply and that should bring</text><text start="1073.1" dur="2.88">the video signal back up here so there</text><text start="1074.9" dur="3.06">we go we're going to keep those settings</text><text start="1075.98" dur="3.54">so this is what you get the first time</text><text start="1077.96" dur="4.02">you you load into it it brings up</text><text start="1079.52" dur="5.58">actually the web browser to load a local</text><text start="1081.98" dur="5.52">HTML document and this is just a little</text><text start="1085.1" dur="5.1">thank you and a readme it tells you to</text><text start="1087.5" dur="4.32">configure some stuff here uh network</text><text start="1090.2" dur="3.12">settings screen settings which we just</text><text start="1091.82" dur="5.219">did networking it actually does</text><text start="1093.32" dur="4.8">recognize uh this card in here and when</text><text start="1097.039" dur="2.76">you click on this by the way it doesn't</text><text start="1098.12" dur="4.74">like open up the program it brings you</text><text start="1099.799" dur="4.5">to a user's guide here we can click on</text><text start="1102.86" dur="3.9">networking to go back to the table of</text><text start="1104.299" dur="5.281">contents and you know it tells you you</text><text start="1106.76" dur="6.06">can read through all this and you got B</text><text start="1109.58" dur="4.979">mail poor man which is actually the web</text><text start="1112.82" dur="4.68">server basically that you can host on</text><text start="1114.559" dur="5.041">here Great Name by the way net positive</text><text start="1117.5" dur="3.539">is the name of the web browser so we can</text><text start="1119.6" dur="4.74">get some info about this if we want to</text><text start="1121.039" dur="4.801">go in here so uh yeah very you know very</text><text start="1124.34" dur="2.94">good guide you would definitely want to</text><text start="1125.84" dur="3.68">read through if you were pretty serious</text><text start="1127.28" dur="4.38">serious about using BOS</text><text start="1129.52" dur="3.82">but we're just going to kind of explore</text><text start="1131.66" dur="2.879">the thing the one thing I do want to</text><text start="1133.34" dur="4.219">mention that I found really interesting</text><text start="1134.539" dur="6">so time preferences let's go into</text><text start="1137.559" dur="4.12">settings here again go to preferences we</text><text start="1140.539" dur="2.941">can actually just click on preferences</text><text start="1141.679" dur="4.38">to open up kind of like how you can in</text><text start="1143.48" dur="5.22">Mac OS how you can view all the</text><text start="1146.059" dur="5.341">preferences from the Apple menu or you</text><text start="1148.7" dur="5.219">can just click on the preferences uh or</text><text start="1151.4" dur="5.04">the settings you know folder sort of to</text><text start="1153.919" dur="4.201">open them up in their own window uh so</text><text start="1156.44" dur="6.239">you can do that here as well and if we</text><text start="1158.12" dur="7.26">go to time uh BOS has a bit of a Y2K or</text><text start="1162.679" dur="4.86">in this case a y2k10 bug going on</text><text start="1165.38" dur="5.28">because we cannot set the date to</text><text start="1167.539" dur="6">anything past 2010 so if I hit this up</text><text start="1170.66" dur="7.44">Arrow here it goes to 1965 so if I try</text><text start="1173.539" dur="6.961">like 2011 2023 it just 2010 that's the</text><text start="1178.1" dur="4.5">maximum year uh yeah but it does</text><text start="1180.5" dur="4.44">recognize if we go to network it will</text><text start="1182.6" dur="3.9">recognize our adapter here and I think</text><text start="1184.94" dur="3.3">it is set up or it says not configured</text><text start="1186.5" dur="3">so let's go to settings</text><text start="1188.24" dur="3.48">um and we're going to obtain settings</text><text start="1189.5" dur="3.96">automatically with DHCP make sure it's</text><text start="1191.72" dur="3.6">enabled we're going to say done and</text><text start="1193.46" dur="4.26">we'll restart networking so we'll close</text><text start="1195.32" dur="4.92">out of that and now when we open up our</text><text start="1197.72" dur="5.699">web browser here which is again net</text><text start="1200.24" dur="4.5">positive I love that Icon by the way and</text><text start="1203.419" dur="4.14">uh yeah we could go to you know</text><text start="1204.74" dur="4.679">theoldnet.com because that's pretty much</text><text start="1207.559" dur="4.5">a requirement when we do this sort of</text><text start="1209.419" dur="5.041">thing and it displays totally fine so</text><text start="1212.059" dur="3.841">yeah there it is of course with this</text><text start="1214.46" dur="2.7">browser being super old it's not going</text><text start="1215.9" dur="4.279">to be able to display like even</text><text start="1217.16" dur="6.54">google.com does not display properly</text><text start="1220.179" dur="4.781">whatsoever uh so yeah you know you're</text><text start="1223.7" dur="2.82">not going to be able to really do any uh</text><text start="1224.96" dur="3.839">I mean you could browse you know through</text><text start="1226.52" dur="4.08">the old net totally fine but any modern</text><text start="1228.799" dur="3.661">websites you're not really going to be</text><text start="1230.6" dur="3.42">able to uh to browse through them at all</text><text start="1232.46" dur="3.3">but I mean what would you expect this</text><text start="1234.02" dur="3.72">operating systems from the mid to late</text><text start="1235.76" dur="3.9">90s but talking about the interface here</text><text start="1237.74" dur="3.96">you can kind of see as I've been opening</text><text start="1239.66" dur="3.24">stuff up this looks uh radically</text><text start="1241.7" dur="3.599">different from anything you've probably</text><text start="1242.9" dur="3.6">seen in Windows Mac OS or even Linux the</text><text start="1245.299" dur="2.88">way that the title bars work because</text><text start="1246.5" dur="4.98">there's not really a title bar at all</text><text start="1248.179" dur="4.801">you have more of a title tab so you know</text><text start="1251.48" dur="3.66">I've got this preferences window here</text><text start="1252.98" dur="4.559">here's the applications I can open up</text><text start="1255.14" dur="3.779">the home folder I can open up the</text><text start="1257.539" dur="3.781">personal Edition which is kind of like</text><text start="1258.919" dur="4.801">the hard drive the the root folder of</text><text start="1261.32" dur="4.5">sorts where you've got apps demos POS</text><text start="1263.72" dur="4.38">develop home preferences uh some of the</text><text start="1265.82" dur="4.38">stuff we already have open and the way</text><text start="1268.1" dur="4.26">this is designed to work is it's where</text><text start="1270.2" dur="3.9">you can basically layer windows on top</text><text start="1272.36" dur="3.12">of each other so I could layer the</text><text start="1274.1" dur="3.24">applications window right on top of</text><text start="1275.48" dur="4.62">personal Edition and then what I could</text><text start="1277.34" dur="5.16">do is hold down the shift key and I can</text><text start="1280.1" dur="3.84">drag this tab to wherever I want on the</text><text start="1282.5" dur="4.14">window so I could drag it like right</text><text start="1283.94" dur="4.619">here next to personal Edition and now I</text><text start="1286.64" dur="3.6">could easily swap between these windows</text><text start="1288.559" dur="3.721">but you know these are still separate</text><text start="1290.24" dur="4.2">Windows one of the things where I feel</text><text start="1292.28" dur="4.139">BOS kind of dropped the ball with is it</text><text start="1294.44" dur="3.119">would have been cool if they had you</text><text start="1296.419" dur="3.481">know made it to where you could have</text><text start="1297.559" dur="4.62">tabs like I could drag this window into</text><text start="1299.9" dur="3.96">this here and have it be two separate</text><text start="1302.179" dur="3.48">tabs in the same window to where when I</text><text start="1303.86" dur="4.08">move this around everything moves around</text><text start="1305.659" dur="4.441">that's in this window and it turns out</text><text start="1307.94" dur="4.56">that Haiku which is again the modern</text><text start="1310.1" dur="5.22">implementation of BOS actually does this</text><text start="1312.5" dur="6.36">so you can drag like a window here into</text><text start="1315.32" dur="5.099">this and it would just add that as a tab</text><text start="1318.86" dur="2.76">to this existing window whatever the</text><text start="1320.419" dur="3.12">application is whether it's the web</text><text start="1321.62" dur="3.419">browser the file browser anything you</text><text start="1323.539" dur="3.961">can all just make it into a single</text><text start="1325.039" dur="3.781">window which is super cool and yeah</text><text start="1327.5" dur="3.419">funnily enough this video actually</text><text start="1328.82" dur="3.18">started out as a haiku video then I was</text><text start="1330.919" dur="4.38">like you know what I should probably do</text><text start="1332" dur="4.74">a BOS video first before I do Haiku but</text><text start="1335.299" dur="3.061">yeah that's the way that this works so</text><text start="1336.74" dur="3.299">we can just you know hold shift and drag</text><text start="1338.36" dur="3.24">this back to the far left you can drag</text><text start="1340.039" dur="4.38">it to the far right if you want and</text><text start="1341.6" dur="5.04">there's also no minimize button on this</text><text start="1344.419" dur="3.721">title tab here so you've got a close</text><text start="1346.64" dur="4.019">button over here and this right here</text><text start="1348.14" dur="3.659">will resize the window to like the sign</text><text start="1350.659" dur="3.961">so basically where it will display</text><text start="1351.799" dur="4.74">everything uh in one go so like if this</text><text start="1354.62" dur="3.78">one was resized like this I could easily</text><text start="1356.539" dur="3.661">just click this to resize it to where I</text><text start="1358.4" dur="4.139">can see everything you can minimize</text><text start="1360.2" dur="4.26">stuff by just double clicking on the tab</text><text start="1362.539" dur="4.38">and that actually minimizes it to what's</text><text start="1364.46" dur="5.339">known as the desk bar which is basically</text><text start="1366.919" dur="4.26">boss is taskbar sort of thing going on</text><text start="1369.799" dur="4.021">over here so this is its default</text><text start="1371.179" dur="4.261">position so I can click tracker here and</text><text start="1373.82" dur="3.599">I can open up preferences and there it</text><text start="1375.44" dur="3.479">is I can close out of it and tracker</text><text start="1377.419" dur="3.181">will still stay here this is kind of the</text><text start="1378.919" dur="3.661">file browser so like if I open a</text><text start="1380.6" dur="5.4">personal edition if I were to go into</text><text start="1382.58" dur="5.82">the applications listing and open up</text><text start="1386" dur="4.14">let's say the web browser again net</text><text start="1388.4" dur="3.779">positive will show up I can double click</text><text start="1390.14" dur="4.2">on that double click on that to minimize</text><text start="1392.179" dur="5.101">it and there it is this really gives me</text><text start="1394.34" dur="4.98">a Next Step feel just the way that uh</text><text start="1397.28" dur="3.54">you know this sidebar over here works</text><text start="1399.32" dur="5.04">there's no dock or anything like you</text><text start="1400.82" dur="6.54">have in Next Step but what you can do is</text><text start="1404.36" dur="4.5">move the desk bar around so if you were</text><text start="1407.36" dur="3.66">used to Windows and the way that the</text><text start="1408.86" dur="3.66">start menu and taskbar functioned well</text><text start="1411.02" dur="3.18">you could just drag this down here at</text><text start="1412.52" dur="2.94">the bottom and now you've got kind of</text><text start="1414.2" dur="2.52">like a start menu because you click the</text><text start="1415.46" dur="3.719">BOS menu you can get to your</text><text start="1416.72" dur="4.5">applications your preferences and all of</text><text start="1419.179" dur="3.48">that if you're a Mac OS user and use to</text><text start="1421.22" dur="3">the menu bar you can just drag them to</text><text start="1422.659" dur="3.541">the top and now you've got kind of an</text><text start="1424.22" dur="4.26">apple menu over here and again you do</text><text start="1426.2" dur="3.959">have your applications that the display</text><text start="1428.48" dur="4.02">here so I'm going to actually leave this</text><text start="1430.159" dur="3.961">down here because I'm definitely used to</text><text start="1432.5" dur="3.6">Windows I'm used to always going down to</text><text start="1434.12" dur="4.38">the bottom left to you know get my list</text><text start="1436.1" dur="5">of programs uh so we'll view the about</text><text start="1438.5" dur="6.36">info so you know version</text><text start="1441.1" dur="5.5">r.5.0.1 uh from May 26 of 2000 is when</text><text start="1444.86" dur="3.24">the kernel version was compiled it gives</text><text start="1446.6" dur="4.02">you a running time or here how much</text><text start="1448.1" dur="4.68">memory you've got available to you and</text><text start="1450.62" dur="4.5">the CPU and platform and copper info and</text><text start="1452.78" dur="4.5">all of that one thing that BOS had that</text><text start="1455.12" dur="4.86">both Mac OS and windows did not have at</text><text start="1457.28" dur="4.56">this time is multiple desktops or</text><text start="1459.98" dur="3.42">workspaces as they're called in here</text><text start="1461.84" dur="4.02">which is a pretty common name for them</text><text start="1463.4" dur="4.8">so if we go into preferences here and we</text><text start="1465.86" dur="4.62">open up workspaces it brings up a little</text><text start="1468.2" dur="4.74">window where we can easily swap between</text><text start="1470.48" dur="4.5">workspaces what's also kind of neat is</text><text start="1472.94" dur="4.56">each workspace can have a different</text><text start="1474.98" dur="4.98">resolution and refresh rate so if you</text><text start="1477.5" dur="3.9">see now uh this monitors is saying that</text><text start="1479.96" dur="3">the video signal is out of range again</text><text start="1481.4" dur="6.36">let's say that I want to set this</text><text start="1482.96" dur="7.38">workspace to uh 1024 by 768 at uh 60</text><text start="1487.76" dur="4.68">hertz so we'll apply that and now it</text><text start="1490.34" dur="4.079">will display on this monitor of course</text><text start="1492.44" dur="4.32">we'll say keep and now if I go to</text><text start="1494.419" dur="5.401">workspaces and I swap back to my first</text><text start="1496.76" dur="4.98">one it will resize back to the 640 by</text><text start="1499.82" dur="4.26">480 resolution that we were running</text><text start="1501.74" dur="4.38">under that workspace so that is pretty</text><text start="1504.08" dur="3.78">neat so if you had like an application</text><text start="1506.12" dur="4.679">that needed to run at a specific</text><text start="1507.86" dur="4.62">resolution or a specific refresh rate</text><text start="1510.799" dur="3.301">you could easily just have a separate</text><text start="1512.48" dur="3">workspace dedicated for just running</text><text start="1514.1" dur="2.76">that application and you can run</text><text start="1515.48" dur="3.54">everything else under another workspace</text><text start="1516.86" dur="4.319">so yeah there's a little run through of</text><text start="1519.02" dur="4.56">the way that the interface is designed</text><text start="1521.179" dur="3.781">let's go ahead and take a look at some</text><text start="1523.58" dur="4.8">of the programs you already explored</text><text start="1524.96" dur="6.06">some of them but with BOS being a really</text><text start="1528.38" dur="5.1">media Centric OS you're going to find</text><text start="1531.02" dur="4.5">there's a ton of well media Centric</text><text start="1533.48" dur="3.72">programs in here we're going to start</text><text start="1535.52" dur="3.659">with 3D mix and that's something I can't</text><text start="1537.2" dur="3.66">really demo because I don't have any</text><text start="1539.179" dur="6.12">like interface that can hook up to this</text><text start="1540.86" dur="7.199">but this is a mixing utility that</text><text start="1545.299" dur="5.88">actually displays each track as as if we</text><text start="1548.059" dur="6.181">go to show hide mixer here it displays</text><text start="1551.179" dur="4.74">each track in like a 3D graph that we</text><text start="1554.24" dur="4.98">got going on here which is super cool so</text><text start="1555.919" dur="5.821">like if I add a new track there it is I</text><text start="1559.22" dur="3.9">can move it around I can rename it uh</text><text start="1561.74" dur="3.84">though I think we have to do that from</text><text start="1563.12" dur="4.32">the uh you know actual track listing</text><text start="1565.58" dur="5.28">here so I can rename this like you know</text><text start="1567.44" dur="4.979">track one and there we go now if I go</text><text start="1570.86" dur="3.84">back to the mixer it'll be named track</text><text start="1572.419" dur="4.981">one and yeah so it's like a 3D</text><text start="1574.7" dur="4.32">representation of each track I was</text><text start="1577.4" dur="3.6">searching around for some sample media</text><text start="1579.02" dur="5.82">that I could use in this just to demo it</text><text start="1581" dur="6.179">and uh I did come across one site that</text><text start="1584.84" dur="4.5">linked to another site that had some of</text><text start="1587.179" dur="3.901">these files unfortunately the site that</text><text start="1589.34" dur="3.42">it linked to is no longer up and even</text><text start="1591.08" dur="4.44">though there is an archive of it in the</text><text start="1592.76" dur="5.7">way back machine uh the actual download</text><text start="1595.52" dur="4.38">link to the file itself that has not</text><text start="1598.46" dur="3.3">been archived there were like five of</text><text start="1599.9" dur="3.48">them and none of them have have been</text><text start="1601.76" dur="3.96">archived so they've just been lost the</text><text start="1603.38" dur="5.22">time unfortunately but what we can do is</text><text start="1605.72" dur="5.939">just make a bunch of tracks here new</text><text start="1608.6" dur="5.22">track new track new track new track new</text><text start="1611.659" dur="6.301">track new track new track new track new</text><text start="1613.82" dur="7.5">track and then we can go to our uh a 3D</text><text start="1617.96" dur="6.18">view here and yeah it just it just kind</text><text start="1621.32" dur="5.52">of looks like uh you know like a bar</text><text start="1624.14" dur="4.74">like a 3D bar graph</text><text start="1626.84" dur="3.839">um but I just like the way that it you</text><text start="1628.88" dur="3.06">know represents everything and you can</text><text start="1630.679" dur="3.781">you know move it around you can change</text><text start="1631.94" dur="4.739">your view I have never really messed</text><text start="1634.46" dur="4.319">around in a program like this I mean</text><text start="1636.679" dur="4.921">I've messed around in GarageBand that's</text><text start="1638.779" dur="4.981">about it and um but yeah I just I mean I</text><text start="1641.6" dur="4.86">think this is kind of neat so um yeah</text><text start="1643.76" dur="5.159">that's a little like non-demo of a 3D</text><text start="1646.46" dur="5.04">mix there uh we've got B mail this is</text><text start="1648.919" dur="5.521">the email program uh we've got a camera</text><text start="1651.5" dur="5.4">program for importing uh files from a</text><text start="1654.44" dur="4.24">camera you've got a CD burner a CD</text><text start="1656.9" dur="5.46">player as well</text><text start="1658.68" dur="5.359">[Music]</text><text start="1662.36" dur="3.24">so there it is</text><text start="1664.039" dur="3.841">and turn this volume down a little bit</text><text start="1665.6" dur="4.86">now</text><text start="1667.88" dur="5.039">POS you can see when I when I double</text><text start="1670.46" dur="4.02">click on another audio file it doesn't</text><text start="1672.919" dur="3.541">just open it up in the existing player</text><text start="1674.48" dur="3.84">it opens up another instance of it BOS</text><text start="1676.46" dur="4.68">was designed to to pretty much have</text><text start="1678.32" dur="5.94">multiple multimedia streams going at the</text><text start="1681.14" dur="5.639">same time so like I can be playing both</text><text start="1684.26" dur="5.419">of these like I'll play this and then</text><text start="1686.779" dur="2.9">I'll play this one</text><text start="1690.32" dur="4.2">and like that's totally possible it</text><text start="1692.419" dur="5.301">plays them both at the same time which</text><text start="1694.52" dur="3.2">of course is gonna sound great</text><text start="1698.059" dur="4.321">this one's like overpowering the other</text><text start="1699.559" dur="5.22">one here but yeah that is one thing like</text><text start="1702.38" dur="4.5">if you look at you know demo videos of</text><text start="1704.779" dur="3.421">BOS they always have like a bunch of</text><text start="1706.88" dur="2.94">stuff going on they've got like a video</text><text start="1708.2" dur="3.18">playing and audio they got like a bunch</text><text start="1709.82" dur="3.54">of stuff uh and that's just to</text><text start="1711.38" dur="4.679">illustrate that like yeah that's what</text><text start="1713.36" dur="4.14">this OS was capable of of course A lot</text><text start="1716.059" dur="4.021">of it would also depend on what Hardware</text><text start="1717.5" dur="4.32">you have but the point that BOS was</text><text start="1720.08" dur="4.38">trying to make is that uh you know with</text><text start="1721.82" dur="4.26">their operating system it was more able</text><text start="1724.46" dur="5.219">to take advantage of newer Hardware</text><text start="1726.08" dur="5.16">features than Windows was at the time to</text><text start="1729.679" dur="3.181">where it could actually accomplish this</text><text start="1731.24" dur="4.08">whereas Windows would struggle with it</text><text start="1732.86" dur="4.559">but I do have some more sample files if</text><text start="1735.32" dur="5.88">we close out of all this and we Mount</text><text start="1737.419" dur="6.181">the windows hard drive so if you right</text><text start="1741.2" dur="4.56">click on the desktop you go to mount and</text><text the drive that the</text><text start="1749.659" dur="5.581">virtual disk file is stored on so I can</text><text start="1752" dur="5.279">go in here and in the desktop folder or</text><text start="1755.24" dur="6.72">on my desktop rather so if we go to see</text><text start="1757.279" dur="6.661">windows and we go to desktop luckily you</text><text start="1761.96" dur="3.78">can also click on a file and type a name</text><text start="1763.94" dur="3.66">just like you can in Windows to easily</text><text start="1765.74" dur="4.02">find what you're looking for I've got a</text><text start="1767.6" dur="4.98">filter called BOS stuff now in here I've</text><text start="1769.76" dur="6">just copied a bunch of random things I</text><text start="1772.58" dur="5.099">do have a few like WMV files in here</text><text start="1775.76" dur="4.799">um once I copied them over I realized</text><text start="1777.679" dur="5.521">that BOS actually predates the wmv file</text><text start="1780.559" dur="4.62">format so you these I mean I could try</text><text start="1783.2" dur="3.78">to open this up in media player and it's</text><text start="1785.179" dur="4.74">not going to open up so you know it says</text><text start="1786.98" dur="4.74">unable to play but I've got a midi in</text><text start="1789.919" dur="5.221">here I've got a couple images I've got</text><text start="1791.72" dur="6.319">two mp3s and we could just open these up</text><text start="1795.14" dur="5.1">you know get party.png we can get</text><text start="1798.039" dur="5.62">chess.png this is these are both</text><text start="1800.24" dur="5.819">wallpapers from Windows 3.0 actually we</text><text start="1803.659" dur="5.101">can open up let's see Acid Jazz this is</text><text start="1806.059" dur="5.1">a track that I use as background music</text><text start="1808.76" dur="4.38">in a lot of my videos so we can have</text><text start="1811.159" dur="4.38">that going we could open up a passport</text><text start="1813.14" dur="4.68">on Mid as well have that start going</text><text start="1815.539" dur="5.221">lower the volume maybe a little bit</text><text start="1817.82" dur="5.16">and uh we can open up this other audio</text><text start="1820.76" dur="3.48">track here</text><text start="1822.98" dur="2.46">and you can see I can have all this</text><text start="1824.24" dur="2.939">going of course it sounds super</text><text start="1825.44" dur="4.02">obnoxious and one of the cool things too</text><text start="1827.179" dur="3.661">like with this uh Midi player here if I</text><text start="1829.46" dur="2.339">close out of it Watch What Happens I'm</text><text start="1830.84" dur="3.98">gonna turn the volume up a little bit</text><text start="1831.799" dur="3.021">then I'm going to close out of it</text><text start="1835.039" dur="3.781">it doesn't just stop abruptly it does</text><text start="1837.62" dur="3.96">that nice fade out and I think it's the</text><text start="1838.82" dur="4.2">same with the media player here</text><text start="1841.58" dur="3.3">no it's not the same with the media</text><text start="1843.02" dur="4.32">player okay but yeah let's go back into</text><text start="1844.88" dur="4.26">our applications here and take a look at</text><text start="1847.34" dur="3.959">some other stuff a couple other things</text><text start="1849.14" dur="4.32">that I want to highlight uh we already</text><text start="1851.299" dur="4.86">took a look at the Midi player uh poor</text><text start="1853.46" dur="6.54">man this is uh an interestingly named</text><text start="1856.159" dur="5.821">web server program basically so I can</text><text start="1860" dur="4.86">select uh organized hit default to</text><text start="1861.98" dur="6.6">create a public HTML in my home folder I</text><text start="1864.86" dur="5.819">can do that and uh now I should be able</text><text start="1868.58" dur="4.199">to so it's starting up if I were to hop</text><text start="1870.679" dur="3.72">over to my capture PC and type that IP</text><text start="1872.779" dur="3.601">in my web browser</text><text start="1874.399" dur="3.541">I can go to it it's on the web server</text><text start="1876.38" dur="3.24">just says that it can't be found because</text><text start="1877.94" dur="3.2">I don't think there's an Intel an</text><text start="1879.62" dur="4.799">in-text an</text><text start="1881.14" dur="5.259">index.html file in the public HTML</text><text start="1884.419" dur="5.461">folder so if I go back to here and we go</text><text start="1886.399" dur="4.621">into home and public HTML okay yeah</text><text start="1889.88" dur="3.179">there's nothing in here so we're going</text><text start="1891.02" dur="5.34">to make a new uh actually can we not</text><text start="1893.059" dur="5.041">make a new uh file right from here yeah</text><text start="1896.36" dur="5.16">we can't like make a new text document</text><text start="1898.1" dur="5.1">or anything so we're going to open up uh</text><text start="1901.52" dur="4.86">let's go to Applications here we should</text><text start="1903.2" dur="5.82">have a text editor in here of some kind</text><text start="1906.38" dur="6.179">uh styled edit maybe yeah that'll work</text><text start="1909.02" dur="6.84">so let's uh just make a really basic uh</text><text start="1912.559" dur="4.5">HTML page here boom look at that so yeah</text><text start="1915.86" dur="3.539">that's pretty nice you had the ability</text><text start="1917.059" dur="4.5">to host a web server with poor man here</text><text start="1919.399" dur="4.441">web definitely relates to multimedia and</text><text start="1921.559" dur="5.041">this was kind of the the rise of the web</text><text start="1923.84" dur="4.319">you know this was the mid to late 90s uh</text><text start="1926.6" dur="3.42">so that was definitely very useful if</text><text start="1928.159" dur="3.721">you wanted to set up a really quick and</text><text start="1930.02" dur="3.48">dirty web server you know right from</text><text start="1931.88" dur="2.94">your computer BOS have that</text><text start="1933.5" dur="3.36">functionality build Tim</text><text start="1934.82" dur="4.26">uh so let's go back here to Applications</text><text start="1936.86" dur="4.439">uh one thing I do want to demo is pulse</text><text start="1939.08" dur="6.719">which is another kind of a widget of</text><text start="1941.299" dur="5.76">sorts this is a CPU usage graph it</text><text start="1945.799" dur="3.961">actually shows that I have an Intel</text><text start="1947.059" dur="4.5">Pentium 3 at 600 megahertz uh that is my</text><text start="1949.76" dur="3.12">processor speed</text><text start="1951.559" dur="4.201">um I've mentioned this before but this</text><text start="1952.88" dur="5.039">is a 733 megahertz Pentium 3 but because</text><text start="1955.76" dur="4.919">of the motherboard that I'm running it</text><text start="1957.919" dur="4.14">uh down clocks it to 600 megahertz and</text><text start="1960.679" dur="4.561">the motherboard I do not want to change</text><text start="1962.059" dur="4.98">because is the only original part uh of</text><text start="1965.24" dur="3.24">this 98 PC well that and the power</text><text start="1967.039" dur="3.181">supply so I'm trying to keep those</text><text start="1968.48" dur="3.179">original</text><text start="1970.22" dur="3.78">um at least for now maybe I'll I'll</text><text start="1971.659" dur="4.02">update it at some point but uh yeah so</text><text start="1974" dur="3.059">you kind of have these applications that</text><text start="1975.679" dur="3.6">are sort of widgets that can just kind</text><text start="1977.059" dur="4.561">of stick on your desktop you can't</text><text start="1979.279" dur="4.321">really resize this unfortunately but I</text><text start="1981.62" dur="4.2">could have this here I could open up</text><text start="1983.6" dur="3.84">workspaces as well this is another good</text><text start="1985.82" dur="3.359">one to have I could have that maybe up</text><text start="1987.44" dur="4.08">here yeah so you'll see whenever I</text><text start="1989.179" dur="4.681">launch a program here like I launched</text><text start="1991.52" dur="4.92">net positive here watch the graph it'll</text><text start="1993.86" dur="6.36">Spike up and then we'll kind of hover</text><text start="1996.44" dur="6.18">around you know one to four notches or</text><text start="2000.22" dur="4.02">bars there whatever you want to say and</text><text start="2002.62" dur="4.439">uh yeah oh you know I guess I could have</text><text start="2004.24" dur="4.5">just gone to the to the uh web server</text><text start="2007.059" dur="2.881">just you know right from here just you</text><text start="2008.74" dur="2.52">know access the files locally but</text><text start="2009.94" dur="3.42">whatever</text><text start="2011.26" dur="3.48">um so yeah net positive web browser Midi</text><text start="2013.36" dur="5.58">player media player we took a look at</text><text start="2014.74" dur="6">magnify is a magnification program uh so</text><text start="2018.94" dur="4.2">you can easily just you know it makes</text><text start="2020.74" dur="4.86">your mouse and do a magnifying glass you</text><text start="2023.14" dur="4.8">should be able to change the size of</text><text start="2025.6" dur="4.319">this uh oh you can decrease the window</text><text start="2027.94" dur="5.219">size okay so that's nice so it's alt</text><text start="2029.919" dur="5.581">minus and ALT comma so if we do alt</text><text start="2033.159" dur="5.161">comma this should decrease yeah like the</text><text start="2035.5" dur="5.82">actual pixel size so that's controlled</text><text start="2038.32" dur="5.82">with alt uh comma and period and then</text><text start="2041.32" dur="4.5">the window size is all plus and minus so</text><text start="2044.14" dur="3.48">if you want this to be kind of small and</text><text start="2045.82" dur="3.539">you want it to be you know maybe you</text><text start="2047.62" dur="3.18">don't need it like that much of a</text><text start="2049.359" dur="3.3">magnification but you want it maybe like</text><text start="2050.8" dur="3.48">that and you have it here and then you</text><text start="2052.659" dur="3.601">can easily get a you know a nice little</text><text start="2054.28" dur="4.139">magnified we gotta up that a little bit</text><text start="2056.26" dur="4.5">and get a good magnified look at</text><text start="2058.419" dur="4.861">whatever your your cursor is looking at</text><text start="2060.76" dur="6.06">so yeah another sort of widget type</text><text start="2063.28" dur="5.579">program now the installer this here is</text><text start="2066.82" dur="5.88">how you can actually install BOS</text><text start="2068.859" dur="5.82">personal on a dedicated partition on</text><text start="2072.7" dur="3.479">your drive so if you really liked BOS</text><text start="2074.679" dur="3">and you wanted to use it as your primary</text><text start="2076.179" dur="3.24">system or if you wanted to dual boot</text><text start="2077.679" dur="4.621">with Windows but you wanted a larger</text><text start="2079.419" dur="4.74">partition more than 500 megabytes you</text><text start="2082.3" dur="3.24">could uh choose whatever partition you</text><text start="2084.159" dur="2.7">want to install it to here of course it</text><text start="2085.54" dur="4.26">doesn't show anything else because we</text><text start="2086.859" dur="5.461">have to go into the partitioning setup</text><text start="2089.8" dur="4.98">here now I can't format it because it is</text><text start="2092.32" dur="4.92">currently mounted so if I go up here to</text><text start="2094.78" dur="5.4">uh unmount no name</text><text start="2097.24" dur="5.7">uh now I should be able to uh yeah I</text><text start="2100.18" dur="4.02">could format it if I want to which I I</text><text start="2102.94" dur="3.3">don't want to do because I would rather</text><text start="2104.2" dur="3.72">keep my Windows 98 installed and you can</text><text start="2106.24" dur="3.9">see now it shows up here so yeah if you</text><text start="2107.92" dur="4.02">wanted to install Vos as your primary</text><text start="2110.14" dur="4.14">operating system on the computer there</text><text start="2111.94" dur="4.56">was no stopping you from doing that one</text><text start="2114.28" dur="4.86">of the cool things too is BOS came with</text><text start="2116.5" dur="6.24">a sort of an app store called software</text><text start="2119.14" dur="5.52">valet and this would allow you to uh</text><text start="2122.74" dur="4.5">browse of course none of this is up</text><text start="2124.66" dur="4.32">anymore but you could browse for</text><text start="2127.24" dur="5.28">software so you could go to the shop</text><text start="2128.98" dur="4.68">here it just opens up in net positive I</text><text start="2132.52" dur="2.52">almost forgot the name of the browser</text><text start="2133.66" dur="3.12">again and then you could manage the</text><text start="2135.04" dur="4.5">software you already have installed get</text><text start="2136.78" dur="3.9">updates if anything's available uh you</text><text start="2139.54" dur="2.88">could go to download this is your</text><text start="2140.68" dur="3.899">download manager if you can see what</text><text start="2142.42" dur="5.46">you're currently downloading uh you can</text><text start="2144.579" dur="5.881">install if you have uh like a local copy</text><text start="2147.88" dur="5.459">uh like something on a on a floppy disk</text><text start="2150.46" dur="5.04">or CD you could open the installer</text><text start="2153.339" dur="3.78">through here and uh you just you know</text><text start="2155.5" dur="4.92">open the package file whatever it might</text><text start="2157.119" dur="5.161">be be and configure you can choose where</text><text start="2160.42" dur="5.04">you want downloads to be if you want to</text><text start="2162.28" dur="4.5">use a proxy server registration all that</text><text start="2165.46" dur="2.76">good stuff so yeah that's definitely a</text><text start="2166.78" dur="3.78">neat addition as well something that</text><text start="2168.22" dur="4.379">Windows certainly did not have you also</text><text start="2170.56" dur="4.38">have a TV program if you had a TV tuner</text><text start="2172.599" dur="4.081">built in which we do not in this case so</text><text start="2174.94" dur="3.36">it says I can't find a video input but</text><text start="2176.68" dur="3.8">yeah you could use a TV tuner we already</text><text start="2178.3" dur="5.24">take a look at the text editor there</text><text start="2180.48" dur="5.8">expander this is just a uh it's called</text><text start="2183.54" dur="6.039">expand-o-matic you can decompress</text><text start="2186.28" dur="5.28">archives basically BOS also offered a</text><text start="2189.579" dur="6">good amount of customizability if we go</text><text start="2191.56" dur="5.519">into preferences here so you can first</text><text start="2195.579" dur="2.881">of all change the background which I</text><text start="2197.079" dur="3.181">mean you you would definitely expect</text><text start="2198.46" dur="3.659">that right from really any operating</text><text start="2200.26" dur="4.74">system you can also change the fonts</text><text start="2202.119" dur="6.661">around if you want you know let's see</text><text start="2205" dur="5.339">here this font oh that looks lovely and</text><text start="2208.78" dur="2.76">there's no like apply button if you've</text><text start="2210.339" dur="3.721">noticed that everything just kind of</text><text start="2211.54" dur="3.96">takes effect uh instantly now I assume</text><text start="2214.06" dur="3.12">that's the default font for like if we</text><text start="2215.5" dur="4.079">open up this and start typing yeah you</text><text start="2217.18" dur="3.679">you can see that the oh yeah the tab and</text><text start="2219.579" dur="3.54">stuff</text><text start="2220.859" dur="4.661">changes there you do have a few screen</text><text start="2223.119" dur="4.5">savers in here you can enable them you</text><text start="2225.52" dur="3.66">can choose when you want it to run and</text><text start="2227.619" dur="3.841">we do have a couple modules I really</text><text start="2229.18" dur="6.6">love this buy now one check this out it</text><text start="2231.46" dur="7.619">just is it's just a flashing buy now</text><text start="2235.78" dur="5.04">uh so they really wanted you to buy this</text><text start="2239.079" dur="2.941">um but you do have some cool ones I mean</text><text start="2240.82" dur="3.12">you have this one that turns the screen</text><text start="2242.02" dur="3.66">black I mean Super basic not that</text><text start="2243.94" dur="5.22">exciting but you've got like super</text><text start="2245.68" dur="5.82">string here which you know definitely</text><text start="2249.16" dur="5.16">gives me a Windows XP Vibe I feel like I</text><text start="2251.5" dur="6.839">I've seen like you know this whole uh</text><text start="2254.32" dur="6.12">line bar graph not bar graph just the</text><text start="2258.339" dur="3.061">series of lines moving around I've</text><text start="2260.44" dur="4.5">definitely seen something like this in</text><text start="2261.4" dur="5.939">Windows XP you've got lens</text><text start="2264.94" dur="6.899">which is one that just kind of goes over</text><text start="2267.339" dur="7.321">your desktop so yeah there you go icons</text><text start="2271.839" dur="5.041">just random like BOS icons just appear</text><text start="2274.66" dur="4.08">you see it'll change every time so there</text><text start="2276.88" dur="4.26">you go this definitely gives me an after</text><text start="2278.74" dur="4.14">dark Vibe no doubt you got your virtual</text><text start="2281.14" dur="3.6">memory settings if we were actually able</text><text start="2282.88" dur="3.42">to create a swap file which again we</text><text start="2284.74" dur="3.599">cannot because the hard drive is too</text><text start="2286.3" dur="3.48">small and there's also if you've noticed</text><text start="2288.339" dur="3">in here under demos we do have a couple</text><text start="2289.78" dur="3.9">of demo applications one of them is</text><text start="2291.339" dur="4.681">Minesweeper which just looks like</text><text start="2293.68" dur="3.72">Windows Minesweeper</text><text start="2296.02" dur="4.68">um so you know I'm just gonna click</text><text start="2297.4" dur="4.56">around like randomly here oh my gosh I'm</text><text start="2300.7" dur="3.3">literally just dur="4.62">know move it all around oh look at that</text><text start="2331.599" dur="5.701">you can change the spacing the kerning</text><text start="2334.54" dur="6.059">um oh yeah we want that start="2343.359" dur="4.021">it's oh that's awesome so yeah you can</text><text start="2346" dur="4.38">have this just going in the background</text><text start="2347.38" dur="5.34">maybe can we actually type out yeah we</text><text start="2350.38" dur="4.26">can look at that as it's still changing</text><text start="2352.72" dur="4.98">fonts we can have that running why don't</text><text start="2354.64" dur="4.86">we open up a GLT pot so we can have this</text><text start="2357.7" dur="3.899">going you can see we got a frame counter</text><text start="2359.5" dur="5.22">here so that's going in the background</text><text start="2361.599" dur="6.361">and we also have chart in here which is</text><text start="2364.72" dur="4.92">a demo in the form of like a space</text><text start="2367.96" dur="3.78">travel</text><text start="2369.64" dur="3.66">simulator maybe is the best word I don't</text><text start="2371.74" dur="3.48">know it kind of reminds me of like the</text><text start="2373.3" dur="4.02">flying Windows screen saver just with</text><text start="2375.22" dur="4.92">stars instead of flying windows so I can</text><text start="2377.32" dur="6.18">set this to like fast motion draw bitmap</text><text start="2380.14" dur="5.52">and there you go and we can you know add</text><text start="2383.5" dur="7.02">some colors here we can add all these we</text><text start="2385.66" dur="6.959">can uh add some comments novas so there</text><text start="2390.52" dur="4.26">you go and you're gonna set it to Auto</text><text start="2392.619" dur="4.321">demo as well which is kind of like moves</text><text start="2394.78" dur="5.46">around which yeah this could definitely</text><text start="2396.94" dur="4.8">function as a screen saver as well if</text><text start="2400.24" dur="3.06">you really wanted to but they just have</text><text start="2401.74" dur="4.32">it in here as a demo so if we hit Escape</text><text start="2403.3" dur="4.74">it should uh or click yeah we clicked it</text><text start="2406.06" dur="3.779">out of it and yeah again all this is</text><text start="2408.04" dur="3.36">running at the same time you see we're</text><text start="2409.839" dur="3.361">not really we're not losing any frames</text><text start="2411.4" dur="3.84">here versus had a solid 60 frames per</text><text start="2413.2" dur="4.26">second and you can see our CPU is like</text><text start="2415.24" dur="3.839">maxed out but you know it can handle all</text><text start="2417.46" dur="2.639">of this and again of course because I</text><text start="2419.079" dur="3.661">know people will say well that's because</text><text start="2420.099" dur="4.681">of your Hardware yes obviously</text><text start="2422.74" dur="3.66">um but you know this is something that</text><text start="2424.78" dur="3.48">BOS was designed to do it was designed</text><text start="2426.4" dur="4.439">to be able to handle multiple uh video</text><text start="2428.26" dur="4.68">and audio streams and just have all this</text><text start="2430.839" dur="4.321">stuff running at the same time with uh</text><text start="2432.94" dur="3.84">you know pretty pretty decent</text><text start="2435.16" dur="3.78">performance especially if you're running</text><text start="2436.78" dur="4.559">this on like bbox Hardware or a machine</text><text start="2438.94" dur="3.659">with dual processors like you'd be able</text><text start="2441.339" dur="3.301">to do pretty well you'd be able to</text><text start="2442.599" dur="3.661">handle a lot this operating system was</text><text start="2444.64" dur="3.6">definitely ahead of its time and it</text><text start="2446.26" dur="4.319">honestly sucks that it had the Fate that</text><text start="2448.24" dur="4.619">it did but the good news is thanks to</text><text start="2450.579" dur="4.741">the Haiku project the spirit of BOS</text><text start="2452.859" dur="5.281">lives on in the modern day and honestly</text><text start="2455.32" dur="5.4">if you want to try out BOS just get</text><text start="2458.14" dur="4.56">Haiku it's much easier to work with it</text><text start="2460.72" dur="3.3">can be installed on a Modern Hardware so</text><text start="2462.7" dur="3.54">you're gonna have a much easier time</text><text start="2464.02" dur="3.48">getting that up and running so uh yeah</text><text start="2466.24" dur="3">and as I mentioned earlier this video</text><text start="2467.5" dur="3.359">was originally going to be a video on</text><text start="2469.24" dur="3.96">Haiku and then like halfway through</text><text start="2470.859" dur="3.601">writing the intro script I was like you</text><text start="2473.2" dur="3">know it would make sense for me to</text><text start="2474.46" dur="2.879">actually talk about BOS because I was</text><text start="2476.2" dur="3.84">already going into a bunch of like</text><text start="2477.339" dur="4.5">history about it so yeah I definitely</text><text start="2480.04" dur="3.299">still want to do a video on Haiku and if</text><text start="2481.839" dur="4.081">you guys want to see that be sure to let</text><text start="2483.339" dur="3.901">me know but uh yeah that's gonna do it</text><text start="2485.92" dur="3.36">for me I hope you guys enjoyed this</text><text start="2487.24" dur="4.14">video if you did be sure to give it a</text><text start="2489.28" dur="3.9">thumbs up get subscribed all that good</text><text start="2491.38" dur="3">stuff and if you really enjoyed this</text><text start="2493.18" dur="3.72">video and if you want to get early</text><text start="2494.38" dur="4.32">access to my future episodes I do have a</text><text start="2496.9" dur="3.54">patreon down below
