hello everybody and welcome back toanother video now in today's video we'regoing to be taking a look at anotheruser interface modification for Windowsand this one is actually pretty coolit's called a bump top desktop now thiswas actually made aware to me in acouple of comments from some of you guysactually back on my Cairo video whichwas another user interface modificationfor Windows and I think even a videobefore that but what this is is it is a3d UIreplacement for both Windows and Mac OSthere's actually a version of this thatworks on Mac OS which is pretty cool nowthis was initially released the veryfirst version was made publiclyavailable in the year 2009 but theinitial concept and I was actually veryinterested to hear about this itactually was conceived in the Year 2006three years before it was released thatis a year after YouTube was launchedthat is a year before the iPhone wasreleased and it was first shown publiclythat year with a YouTube video which Iwill have down below it's still up onYouTube right now I'll actually probablyput it up in the cards if you guys wantto go ahead and actually check it outbut it's a video of a of the very firstversion of this project beingdemonstrated and what's also pretty coolis there's a point in that video whereit's actually shown running on an XPtablet computer that looks identical toone of the ones that I got from a viewerout there named Mitchell that I'veshowcase in a couple of videos on thischannel it's that toshiba portage alaptop so this was kind of designed andone of the unique things about thisproject it makes it a little bitdifferent than some of these other onesthat we take a look at is not only is it3d but it was also designed for atouch-based interface like I said thatvideo shows it running on a tabletcomputer and later versions supported amulti-touch interaction with it so itactually uses gestures as you can seefrom this image right here you know andif you go to the website this is the themain site where you can download it fromand so yeah you can kind of see here allthese different gestures that he's doinghere to kind of interact with the systemI would actually like to use thisinterface on like a tablet or orsomething like that I just don't have aWindows tabthat is a you know multi-touch tabletthat can run Windows at the moment sowe're going to have to just you knowresort to using this on a standarddesktop computer as you can probablyalso kind of see with the way like thatwhole top-down view it basicallyimitates and one of the the goals of itand one of the things that the authoractually talks about in this TED talkright here this is a TED talk from 2007and he kind of says that one of theinspirations behind the program waswanting to kind of make computers work alittle bit more like your desk just kindof the way that you have things laid outon your desk so that was kind of one ofthe goals of this program so it's kindof designed in some ways to imitate areal computer desk with objects now thisproject was actually kind of short-livedbut that's a good thing actually atleast for the people who actuallycreated it because just one year laterone year after it was initially releasedthe company was actually bought out byGoogle yes Google actually bought themout which is pretty awesome and whenthey were bought out by Google sometimeafter that happened bump technologieswhich is the name of the actual companyactually removed a bump top from thewebsite so you could no longer downloadit anymoreGoogle implemented some of thetechnologies that we know were developedby Boehm technologies into Android sothat is actually pretty cool as well andthey talked a little bit more about thaton this github page right here now therewere two different versions of thisprogram there was a free version and apaid version and the activation serversome time once again after they wereacquired by Google the activationservers were actually shut down so youcould no longer use the paid version nowyou might be wondering okay so then howare we able to actually take a look atit today well that's because back in2012 about eight years ago now Googleactually made this project open-sourceso yes this is completely open-sourcenow and it is free to download onceagain so you can go on here and theyhave the free version like the the lastversion that they made which is version2.5 so that is a very very brief historyof this projectkind of how it came to be and what itaim to do now let's actually let meactually just close out of Firefox herelet's actually take a look at so we arerunning a Windows 7 and the version thatwere gonna be taking a look at today isas I said 2.5 now this is newer than theversion that was demonstrated in boththat original YouTube video from 2006and in the TED talk given by the authorhe was also using I believe the sameversion or maybe a slightly newerversion as what was shown in theoriginal YouTube video this one righthere is completely different there's alot of changes done from that initialrelease so you might be wondering whyI've got all these icons on the desktophere that is just so that we canactually that I can actually show youbump top in action because you need tohave some icons on your desktop toreally use one of the mainfunctionalities of this program and thatis organizing your desktop so let's justgo ahead and launch it right here sothere we go it launches up and you cansee that we still have access to theStart menu and the taskbar so it doesnot completely take over everything sothese are all of our shortcuts here Ijust kind of have them you know thrownaround arranged in various differentways now there's a couple differentsurfaces that you have in this programhere so this one that you're lookingdown on right now is kind of going to beyour main view this is where you'regonna probably launch most of yourprograms from then you also have thesewalls up here which you can double clickon to actually you know change your aviewpoint and actually look directly atthe wall so you can also like if Iwanted to drag this icon right here upto the wall and have it be on the wallinstead you could definitely do that sobasically everything on this bottomportion right here and also on the wallscan be moved around wherever you want sothere's a lot of customizability therenow I can even if I want to zoom in alittle bit closer I can double click onthe bottom surface and now it willactually this is probably the closestthe bum top is ever going to lookcompared to their regular Windowsdesktop because right now aside from theway these icons are arranged itdefinitely looks like a standard Windowsdesktop with a background but obviouslywhen you double click on that it willkind of reset to the to the main view soyou can launch programsjust as you would from the Windowsdesktop like if I want to launch Firefoxhere I can double click on Firefox andit'll do that nice kind of animation asits launching the program so your iconscan be kind of moved around even kind oflike throwing around and just kind ofplace wherever you want them to be onthe desktop but what's cool is is howyou actually organize everything wellwhat you can do with this is like groupthese icons into they're called stacksin this program and they basicallyreplace folders now folders also I'llget into this in a minute do functionvery similarly to stacks because I havethis folder right here created beforethat I actually launch the program butlet's say that I want to take all ofthese shortcuts right here my picturesdocuments music let's take this helpdocument right here or this helpshortcut let's take the recycle bin andmaybe the default programs what I can dois I can draw a circle around this andthen once this icon comes up right hereI can drag my mouse straight up and nowit has created a pile sorry they're notcalled sacks are called piles now if youdouble click on this pile right here itwill open up on what's called the gridview and that just gives you basicallylike a folder it actually kind ofreminds me of fences which is a startupprogram that I used to use a lot whichbasically let you group icons togetherin there are called fences obviously sothis kind of interface right here kindof reminds me of that but if youright-click on this you can see righthere you've got a ton of different viewoptions so I can hit fan out and all ofthese do have keyboard shortcuts by theway as well so right now I'm kind offanning it out and if I click I can youknow open up any one of these so if Iwant to open up documents there you goand then I can click on this red X onceI'm doneand it'll kind of go right back to thepile right there if I want to move theseinto a regular windows folder I couldright click on it and click on foldereyes it's obviously not going to be ableto work since I've got the recycle binin there so we're just gonna say nobecause it was gonna have me break thepile no breaking the pile just separateseverything and it takes it out of thepile once again to remake I just got adrawing a circle around them drag up andthen it creates city pile right there soit's just kind of designed to give you adifferent way to kind of manage all youricons so like I said all of these dohave akeyboard shortcuts and also like withdouble-clicking and using the scrollwheel they do have mouse shortcuts aswell so what I can do is if I don't wantto double click on this to see what's inhereI can mouse over and then start usingthe scroll wheel and I can get access toall of the various icons in there so ifI wanted to launch a default programwhich is at the bottom I can just mouseover it scroll and then launch defaultprograms right there and there you go sothis is probably like your your quickestway to launch these programs using theleast amount of clicks possible becauseyou're just going up here using thescroll wheel to get to whatever item youwant and then just double click on itand then you actually launch it now oneof the other cool things that you can dois and this is kind of going back to thedesk analogy is you know you youprobably have some things on your deskthat are larger than other things sowhat you can do is actually change thesize of every single thing here towhatever size that you want and thatkind of is going to be a way to signifywhat's most important or what is mostused so for example I use my browser alot so for Firefox here let's say that Iwant to make this larger but what I cando is right-click on it and click ongrow or I can press ctrl G because onceagain everything has a keyboard shortcutso I can press grow I can press ctrl Gto make it super large if I want to eatto the point where it just is likeobnoxiously large and you know you canhave this wherever you want I wouldprobably not want to have it this largeso ctrl s is going to shrink it there soI mean this right here this is muchlarger than all these other icons so itkind of signifies to the user thatthat's a more important item so youwould probably want to have like yourbrowser you might want to have likelet's go ahead and set the browser uphere you might want to have maybe mycomputer we can kind of you know growthis a little bit maybe not have it aslarge as Firefox but maybe larger thanall these other icons here and let's sayyou may want to have them in like thecenter of the screen you can maybe haveFirefox right here have the computerhere have your stack of let's say thiswas your most commonly used items hereand then maybe have Microsoft Word ofcourse is like a super old version of itbut so yeah so these are kind of yourlet's say your your mouse programs and if you use word Allahyou can maybe make this a little bitlarger maybe as large as a firefox sothere's a lot of ways to actuallycustomize this now one of the otherthings that you can do is even withthese different sized items is you canmake piles with them as well so if Iwant to make a pile with all these itemshere I can do that and you can see thatthe size of the icons still takes effectso you can see that Firefox and Word arethese two gigantic icons and then you'vegot my computer and the music folderright thereas much smaller items in there but I canagain go over to it I can scroll on itand I can get access to all of theseitems now another cool thing that youcan do is as I was saying before you candrag anything in this interface aroundto wherever you want so if I wantedInternet Explorer maybe to be on thisside wall I could drag it up there andthen Internet Explorer will be pinnedright there and you can also do thiswith widgets as well so bump top comeswith a couple of different widgetsthere's a note widget over here there isa Facebook widget right here whichunfortunately does not work anymorebecause you can click on login here andthat attempts to load the facebook loginpage but it is not not successful atthat you also have over here you've gota Twitter widget and an email widget aswell so with the note widget if I wantto drag this down to my center area hereI can double click on it to create a newnote and it's got this default text herewhich actually changes depending on eachnote that you make so right now it saysread a book I could create a new one itsays clean on my desktop but let's sayfor this one here I want to double clickon this to modify it and let's say thatI want to remind myself to edits thisvideo so I can do that and then clickout of that and now the actual widgetright here itself will change so now itsays edit this video and just like withthese other items I can change the sizeof this so if I want this to be superimportant I could kind of have it be agigantic up here and you can also putthis into a pile as well so if I want tomove this note into this pile right hereyou could do that let's go ahead and fanthis out because I want to go ahead andpull this note out of here so I'm gonnaremove from pile and nowthe note is going to be out of the pileyou also have this nice widget righthere called send to printer and this isbasically if you have something that youwant to print you can literally justdrag it up to the printer icon and thenwe'll say do you want to print thesefiles on your default printer we'regonna say no because I don't have thatproperly set up but if you had like atext document for example I could dragthis up to the printer and then I couldsay yes I want to print that so that'sjust a way to kind of easily drag anddrop something and then after youperform a pretty useful action with ityou also have if I double-click on thewall right here this right here isactually a frame which you can put apicture or a slideshow in so you canagain make this super large if you wantto so what I could do is go to more hereand then click on change photo frame andI can actually specify a location Icould also choose a Flickr tag thisdoesn't appear to work I assume this isgoing to basically take randomizedphotos from Flickr depending on what tagthat you put here so for example I putsunset in here and it should if it wasworking properly an attempt to pull youknow sunset images or images that aretagged sunset on Flickr but I don'tthink that's really working here yourthe last option if we go to change photoframe is to get a photo RSS feed fromFlickr or Picasa Web Yin's kind ofshowing its age right there now there'salso another widget which unfortunatelydoesn't work anymore and that is thesharing widget so if you right-clickanywhere on the desktop and go to thiswidgets menu you're going to actuallyget a list of all of the widgets thatare currently enabled so you could alsodisable some of these so it's safe foremail maybe you don't use that oneyou could uncheck that you see it's kindof fall off the wall right there but wecan enable the sharing one and this isactually pretty cool because what it didit doesn't work anymore because onceagain the actual server that hosted thisis not up anymore but you could drag anyfile onto this and upload it it willthen upload it to their servers and thenit would give you a link to directlyshare that file with somebody else PC itdoesn't actually work so if you werecomfortable with uploading whatever fileit was to their server this gives you avery easy way to literally justdrag and drop something get the link andthen share it with whoever you weregonna share it with but of course youwould have to be comfortable with havingthis be on their server but you can alsoactually create piles based on a coupledifferent parameter so you could pile bytype or pile by time so if I had pile bytypeit'll first come up with a warning andsay this will sort and move all icons onthe desktop but you want to continue andif I say yes now we're gonna do is pileeverything up by the type that it is soyou've got your shortcuts here you'vegot miscellaneous items here you've gotyour sticky notes here and then you haveyour system icons over here you see therecycle bin is obviously separatebecause there's something that you canyou know drag stuff to and yeah by theway if I want to get rid of one of theseshortcuts say this one right here justlike on the desktop I can drag it to therecycle bin it'll come up with the samestandard windows dialog and I can sayyes I wanted to delete that shortcut andthere you go now let me actually showyou some of these settings that you canmodify by right-clicking on the desktopclicking on more and then going to bombtop settings so this is the mainconfiguration window for palmtop now oneof the things that you guys if you watchthe original video of the very firstversion of bum Tom one of the thingsyou're probably going to see is thatwhen you drag the icons around they cankind of bump into each other and thenkind of basically interact with eachother and larger items will not be ableto really be bumped as easily by smalleritems and you guys have probably noticedthat none of that has been happening inthis version right here I've been tryingto go through this settings menu offcamera to kind of figure out how toenable that and I'm wondering if it'shonestly a version or a feature that wasavailable only in the pro versionI can't tell because if you try to go tothis comparison chart and we'll just goahead and not update Firefox it justspits out a 404 error because it triesto go to bomb top comm slash Pro andthen you know this whole string of texthere so basically every link in thisprogram is either going to redirect youto the main bomb top web site or it'sgoing to say that it couldn't navigateto this page but I mean I've gone undericons and physics I've enabled both ofthese items right here they don't reallytalk about you know bumping anything allthese settings in here don't reallypertain- you know the actual bumping you canobviously still kind of throw up iconsaround and you know kind of mess withthem that way but you just can't likebump this into another icon to kind ofmake them both move around so I don'tknow if that was in the demo kind ofjust a proof of concept type thing or ifthat was an original feature in thefirst version under visuals here youhave a decent amount of visualmodifications that you can do you canalso go to themes here and there are acouple of different themes that areincluded so you can go to the bump topclassic theme for example hit apply andyou can see that it kind of changes theinterface of the program a little bit sowe go to bumped next is another themehere hit apply and there you go you canalso change what wallpapers are used onthe floor and all of the walls here soif I wanted to change the floorwallpaper to something else if I hadlike an image file that I wanted to useyou could select that or you could justsay use my windows background as thefloor hit apply and now it will justtake my desktop background which in thiscase is the default Windows 7 backgroundand make that the floor now obviouslysince the bum top is kind of taken overyour desktop here when you right-clickto get to the context menu like youwould normally do you obviously don'thave that anymore you because it's beenreplaced with this new interface so whenyou go to more here you also have someother options that have been moved overhere kind of from the regularright-click context menu so things likechanging your screen resolution gettingaccess to your gadgets or opening up thepersonalized properties have been moveddown here so you can still get access tothem like if I wanted to click onpersonalize change the theme for Windowsthere you go you also have someshortcuts to open a command promptwindow or open an explorer window nowone thing that I also want to touch onis how folders behave because foldersbehave very similarly to piles and bummtop right here and that's basicallybecause when I open up this folder righthere you can see it gives me the exactsame interface as if I were to go intothis pile and click on the grid viewit's going to give me the exact sameinterface it's also treated as a pilein the sense that if I right-click on itand click on break pile it will breakthe items out of the folder and thencompletely get rid of the folder so thatis how that you know folders actuallyfunctions so you can create piles bydoing this gesture right here if youwant to create a folder you canright-click on the desktop go to moreand then you can click on new folderright here and then create a brand newfolder I could rename this if I want toso you can go to more click on rename solet's say I want to name this new folder3 there you goand then you could also if I had likethese items right here I'm selecting aninside of the folder and since this isactually changing the location of theseitems on the system because keep in mindthat when you're moving things into apile you're not changing the physicallocation of them on your hard drivesince we are doing that in this case itwill ask you are you sure you want tomove these files to new folder 3 we'llclick on yes and now it will actuallyyou know physically move those items orshortcuts or whatever into the folderwhich is a new location which is exactlyhow our folder normally functions inWindows but what you can do is rightclick on it and click on expand to pileand this will it does not get rid of thefolder but it will kind of give you thepile interface where you can kind ofscroll through the items and all of thatbut it still functions like a folder andthat is indicated by if we go to thegrid here this icon up here which thisone does not have you see if we go intothis one here you see we do not have thelittle folder icon up here so this stillif I right-click on it and go to a breakpile it will ask me are you sure youwant to move the items from the folderonto the desktop it will click breakpile and now they will be back on thedesktop but there you have it guys thatis an in-depth look at
