okay I'm gonna do a presentation on sometips and tricks that I have used withour NGO has to make my life a littleeasier may or may not help you but thisis roughly based on a presentation thatI did Warp stalked the u.s. last yearbecause I put this together unreasonablyshort notice so hopefully not too manyof you have seen it before go ahead nextslide okaypre boot menu a couple of things that Ialways go in and change I don't have aUSB DVD driver so I always go in andchange it so that I don't get thatphantom Drive in my drives folder forUSB and if you are having drivers trapit's real easy to edit the configuresystems and go in and actually just Ramout the driver of course depending onwhat the driver is if it's the harddrive if it's hzi or something like thatit's not going to do you much good butbut oftentimes you can do that and youcan use either verbose boot which issetting in the pre boot menu which takesdown basically it takes down the logo soyou can see everything load huge amountof garbage on the screen mostly and oryou can just use the alt f2 which showseverything that loads after the logocomes down next slide the GPT or Luc'stype drives which a lot of new computersare going to have with windows on themyou don't want to go anywhere near themwith OS to our basic OS to diskutilities because they think that thedrive is empty so guess what they do tothe driveyeah it basically read partitions andreformats everything and you loseeverything that was on that drivenow they DFC and air boot have beenfixed to address this pretty well so ifyou're using those types of tools andhasn't even many many LVM is okay youyou are in theory safe but like I saidif you're using LVM itself be reallycareful because it potentially could bea problem right but but if you start LVMitself it doesn't check in other wordsI'm saying don't use the pure IBMshipped disk because there are peoplewho actually destroyed discshistorically with the tools peernetworking one of the things you want tomake sure and I think this is going intothe installer is that you have toinstall NetBIOS or NetBIOS over tcp/ipfaultright rightand if you don't see it or you just flatmiss it you're going to end up withPierre installed and have no idea why itdoesn't work and that's why it doesn'twork it's because the network protocolsaren't installed you can actually usepeer networking and samba at the sametime but then you have to use peernetworking you have to run it overstraight NetBIOS because NetBIOS sometcp/ip basically uses the sameaddressing as Sam but does so theyinterfere with each other but NetBIOSdoes it next slidesureI had not seen that okay because I mhmI historically did this on EEZs which itwould also work on Arkham OS but Ihaven't actually done it on our go swith P R and Sam but at the same time Irecommend that you remove drivers thatyou don't need they take up space theychange the timing a lot of them don'teven load in reality they just go outand check it speeds up the boot a littlebit maybe not real important there are alot of people that even if you're usingthe fat32 driver that recommend that youdon't use the cache that it actuallyslows it down my USB ports are so slowthat I wouldn't notice the only thingyou want to make sure you don't do isremove duplicate base USB driversbecause each of your controllers has tohave a driver so if you have fourcontrollers of one of those types and ofcourse you be us bx HDD is simplyhopefully going to be out soon it isbeing developed okay go ahead if you'rerunning protect only which means youdon't install das or Windows if youinstall peer and all the networkingstuff all of the virtual drivers for dasget installed it doesn't pay anyattention to this so you need to go inand cut them outdon't take das systems out thoughbecause that when you need to run evenunprotect mode okay go aheadyeahit does it does a lot of things in otherwords it's not directly related to dotsI just mention it because obviously itlooks like it is based on its nameshells but the real difference is theway they do command line expansion so ifsome command lines on for always toexpand is something different than whatthey expand on CMD and that's what whatbasically causes all these problems alot of them have been addressed in theweight is for os/2 but it still has itsproblems and I'll be honest with you Idon't use it as my default shell anymoreI have two CMD wrappers that I use whichI simply run afterwards so if I go backmy environment off of the desktop is CMDmy environment off of everything else isfor os/2 I just changed the shellcommands but this is just a list of someof the things that I've run across thatthere are problems a NPN installed as atwork ARCA mapper has a bunch of problemsbut this is one of them and some of theBMX programs will throw weird errormessages even though a lot of timesthey'll work you'll get a collection oferror message boxes so you're justbetter off probably using CMD as yourdefault next slidecome and feel command-line switches onmost things you probably don't need muchin the way in command-line switches thenew this is the new fat32 the dot tenand as you can see EA's it has beenintermittently broken across versionsmay be broken in every one of theversions except that I can't identifythat it is so probably unless you have areal specific reason for needing it youprobably don't want to use it the slashfat gives you the fat support which arewhich is just fat only with longfilenameswhich is kind of a nice feature that oneis included in the arc OS version the Xfat which is an experimental in this andis Microsoft's patented fat version it'snot available in Argos and it's becauseof the Microsoft patents and licensingyou can try adding to the HCI driver the/n / f it does speed up disk access forsome people in some systems and no onehas reported a problem with using itthat doesn't mean there isn't a problembut it's something you might want to trya virtual address limit I've heard a lotof different things that range from whatI've got up there from 10 to 10 24 to 3072 1536 I think is the default in our gowest it's probably if you're running alot of things a lot of big programs likeOpen Office and the Mozilla apps andstuff like that you probably need tokick it up at least a 2048next slide okayone of the interesting things that Idiscovered I often shine I would changedaus from low no um be too high you andbe I use dots for a decompilers a lot ofpeople obviously this has no effect onbecause you're probably not going to beusing daus but I found out that it trapsif that device driver has the slash umbe switch on it and I have no idea whybecause if you've got it set both placesif I take the switch off and put highyou and B it works if I use low no um Band put the slap and put the switch onit works but both of them it traps so ifyou make some change to your dodgesettings and have an odd trap that'sprobably it's probably related to that Ilike using V compat it's one of thethings that allows dots to see drivesthat are bigger than the two gigabytesthat's one of the things that does itactually does some timing stuff for someall at old dos games and a few otherthings that are nicethere is another driver which nameescapes me if all you're interested inis the two gigabyte larger than twogigabyte Drive support and I use fourdots and as far as I can tell it doesn'thave any of the problems that for os/2does with things not working next slidethe dots video issues where your dustwindow comes up and says that this videois not supported I don't remember theexact error message there's a lot ofthings you can try the vs VGA a dot siswith the interrupt n whatever thatwhatever the rest of the stuff is endingand safe is the one that most reliablyworks you have to put that intoconfigures config dotsystem and then you need to add modeCoad and then on a separate line cos tothe auto execute that and that on mysystem for example works it does not fixit on every system there are some otherthings you can try as you can seethere's a huge number of command lineswitches that actually exists for thesethings I think it was you Roderick ittold me that basically people have triedmost of them without much success whenyou were working on ECS other than theone that works but they representsomething you could try that's about thebest there are a few reports the V V GASIS or the VX g ASIS actually fixes itthis right this is this is a fix forWindows it's not for full screen fullscreen works any computer that you canfix the window with this full screenworks at least as far as I know so andthe other trick is sometimes you canopen the full screen and then justswitch it to a window and that will workin other words you don't get the errormessage when you take the full screendown to a window I don't know that itworks hundred percent of the time but italso works on some computers where thisswitch doesn't so there are severaldifferent approaches to try to workaround this next slide the other thingis is there have been reports thatwindow is - some of them where das worksand winnow is - doesn't work if you goin there are four dots video setsettings and there have been reports ofvarious ones of those being toggledeither on or off depending on if they'reon you toggle them off and if they'reoff you toggle them on which actuallyfixes the window as to problem nextslide some people like to sort theirconfigure systems I personally do Ithink Doug's logical config sort is anice tool obviously other people don't Ihaven't had any problems with his toolbreaking anything obviously there aresome order things within config dot sishe understoodmost of them were not in them right Iassume there is probably some odd driverout there that he knows nothing aboutthat could become a problem I do knowone thing that if you're adding a newcomm driver Network driver and you tryto add it into the additional yourpersonal drivers it gets added in thewrong order because they either all getadded first or last I think it's lastand that's not where that driver needsto be because then there is no carddriver as the rest of the networkdrivers try to add but that's that's theonly one I'm aware of and of coursethat's kind of an odd one I also useconfig tool which obviously some of itssuggestions are pretty outdated but someof the things that suggest and some ofthe things that we'll show you areactually still valuable next slide micea mouse versus s Mouse I think s Mousethe only thing that you really need touse it on is ThinkPadsand I run a mouse on my think pad and itworks just fine but some people have hadproblems with it on think pads withtrack point and stuff and if you doobviously the thing the thing I wouldrecommend is install with a mouse andthen if you do encounter Mouse errorsswitch back to IBM single Mouse drivermulti-point Exe it's loaded by WP configDLL which is part of the single Mousedriver as far as I can tell with a mouseloaded it does nothing but take up lowmemory and eat CPU cycles because it'sit's a it poles you can see that if youlook at it in top or something like thatit's a polling driver I always justsimply rename it I be M and it'sinfinite wisdom did not provide any wayto prevent it from being loadother than renaming it or something ofthat equivalent if you're going to dothat and switch to the single mousedriver they'll remember you did thatbecause you're gonna have to rename itback otherwise the single mouse driverwon't work well and what I'm saying ismulti pointed scroll is is pulling forsomething or throwing interrupts I can'ttell you what it's eating CPU cycles iswhat I can tell you and right but if Itake multi-point out I don't see it inother words it's not like something elsedoes it next slideI think a trap most reported once thecrash I think it was a t60 there are Cos as a new loader and it has a couple ofnice features one you can create a ramdisk which uses any memory you haveabove the four gigabyte limit and forexample my desktop has four gigabytes ofmemory in it I can still create a 500megabyte drive that is using memory thatotherwise would never be used becausethere's that much that is taken out ofthat four gigabytes by roms and otherthings that are getting loaded so eveneven with 4 gigabytes is it this isvaluable I put my temp file on it andthose commands the run this and the 2sec commands is simply what I put in myconfig dot sis and that way it createsthe the temp directory on my drive Zwhich is obviously the RAM disk I'musing and then set sever then pointseverything to it you can put the printspooler on it and there's a there's abox that you can check where on a warmreboot it will try to preserve what's onthat disk so that you can use itfollowing a warm reboot obviously a coldreboot ain't gonna help but I not triedthat so I don't know how well it does itobviously that becomes important for thespooler if you know you crash in themiddle of a print job you really don'twant to lose what's in this boiler aspart of that the other thing you couldactually put on it is the swap file andI've done that and it works the problemyou the only problem you have is theswap file has to be put in the rootbecause this trick of making a directoryfor whatever reason doesn't work and Ithink it's just because the swap filegets initialized too early in the bootprocess for this to work but you can putthe swap file up there so you could usethe memory for that also of course Idon't think I've gotten to swap evenrunning OpenOffice and Mozilla apps andstuff like that I don't think I've goneto my swap file in years so may not helpmuch it also has the ability to you canput a mem limit in and the advantage tothat is if you're if you're trying toget a trap dump obviously creating a 4gigabyte fat drive is a little toughthere is a tool a dump FS which isreally not ready for primetime it wasreleased as a beta by Scott Garfield isone of the last things that he put outbut this allows you this allows you touse a 2 gigabyte or even smaller fatdrive as your dump partition because allthe memory you have is 512 now you don'twant to obviously run like this becausethat's literally all the memory you haveit just makes it so so that the systemcannot see the rest of the memory itjust sees the 512 or you can limit it to1024 to 2048 depending on this is also alot easier for whoever's gonna have toanalyze that dump because they'vegot a lot less stuff to go through thenthey would have if you've got your 4gigabytes of memorynext slide the note on both the what Iput up there is what you would put in tothe os/2 loaderwell it's ldillard dot config is thoselines there are twoGUI tools in Arco s one of them calledmem limit and you can just type menwomen and command blind because it's inthe path and in actually in the setupfolder is the one to create it's calledramdisk and it's the one to create theramdisk and basically all they arefront-ends that create that loaderconfiguration file X Center just a fewthings I always switch to else Witcherimmediately I just get rid of the winlist you could theoretically run thestandalone version of L switcher andleave the win list in I've neveractually tried it but there would be noreason to prevent it you can't run bothstandalone L switch or and L switch oran X Center at the same time becausethey're gonna leave you one version of Lswitch or Ronnie I always removed in useplugins the consideration here is thatall of those all of X all of x workplaceruns as part of the PM process it's partof the system so it's it's increasingthe memory in the complexity of what isalready the most complex part when XCenter opens rather the plug-in isinstalled or not if it is in thedirectory that plug-in gets loaded so itis taking up memory if nothing else X Wland is kind of worst because when youclose X Center supposedly all of theseget unloaded for whatever reason itdoesn't unload so that's one of the onesunless you need it for Wi-Fi that youprobably want to go in and rename theeasiest thing to do is just go in thedirectory and all the ones you're notusing just rename them because as soonas you there knowlonger DLL extension it doesn't try toload them and so that saves the memoryand then if you decide later you want touse it you just have to go in and renameit back and install it I always add itto the screen border so that you canjust go down to the screen border and itopens X Center that can be done two waysthe X Center settings itself has acheckbox that says add 2 to this greenborder and then you can actually go intothe page or a screen page where you canthrow it in as going to that border nextslide the full X workplace has a coupleof features that the our Kanoa one doesnot the reboot two choices in otherwords you can read when you've just gotthe Arcanum when you have your choice ofreboot or of shutdown with the fullversion you have reboot reboot - whichis you can actually tell it okay I wantto reboot to whichever partition youwant to work on with err boot at leastthe last that I looked the nice littlemenu where it tells you what to put into set the reboot isn't there but it'sreal simple to do all you do is put setboot slash IBA and then the colon andthen in parentheses is whatever the nameof the partition is and even if itdidn't show on the list it works justfineturbo folders is not included in turbofolders is kind of problematic in thatit changes the way that the associationswork it associates the the way that theynatively work is they're associated byfilter this changes it so that areassociated by type but in order for thatto work the filters have to be under thetypeso you have to actually go in andassociate the filters with all the typeit doesäôt a page where you can do thatassociate editor edit which i think is avery nice little tool is what I actuallyuse to do that if I'm playing with thatI'm not sure that Turbo folders bringsyou any advantage that it's worth thehassle that it with the associationchanges the other thing that you get isthe settings object so you can turnvarious things within X workplace on andoff if that's something that you wish todo that settings is not available in theArcanum one next slideArkham a / Arkham mapper has some issuesone of the ones that is really kind ofconfusing is is auto start there areactually two ways to automaticallyrestart the shares you can either usenet drives persistent setting which isthe one I recommend Auto Start is crapas far as I'm concerned auto start hasthe following problems one most of thetime you will get an error that one ormore your shares is not available whichI find very interesting because if I usedrive persistence what I will get fromauto start if I had it installed at thesame time is the error telling me theshare is already installed which meansdrive persistence goes first and managesto find them allit doesn't uninstall gracefully all itdoes is throw an error message that saysI couldn't uninstall myself it's prettyeasy to uninstall because you can simplypull it out of the startup folder andthat fixes it but it's still one ofthose things where you'd like to seethat it does that the auto persistencewhat you do is you need to do it beforeyou do anything with Mountie volumes youwant to change persist volumeconfiguration to volconfigure or whatever name you are usingfor your volumes because you canactually set that to something else thisis the default name and then to do thatyou just unruhe market or you add it tothe NB c-- LT configure file which is inwherever and the FS is in it's underthat it's under your boot drive programsnd FS if it's an R if it's a default orCano install the other annoying thingabout out of start is minimized meansthat you have a throbber that coversabout half your screen that runs untilall of the drives have been restored oruntil it's thrown the twelve errormessages that it's going to throw aboutthe fact that can't find them next ifyou try to install shares from serverswhere all you have are NetBIOS names itwon't find them what you have to do isyou have to put in your host file thatNetBIOS name and then the IP address nowif you have a local dynamic named serverthat fixes it you would have to use thehost names though for any of the IPaddresses obviously if you're using DHCPand there's a reason to believe yourservers IP address might change you haveto do one of a couple of things well youcould set up a name server you canactually almost all of the DHCP serverscan be told that always give this IPaddress to this MAC address or you canset up your server as a static address Ithink most of the DHCP servers thehighest address they will give is theone just below the last the first staticso you want the static address to be wayhigh up if you're setting it with astatic and everything else is on DHCP wetalked a littleabout four LS to some of the sampleprocesses end up essentially runningamok and the only way to take care ofthat is to just go out and kill themright now the advanced mount optionswhich are curve O's 5 which encryptionsystem you're using and a couple ofother things they're all selected bydefaultand of course interestingly they'remutually exclusiveso not real helpful basically you justin their location is unintuitive ifyou're going through the front pagewhich is the shares page it's on thesecond page of that tab if you're goingthrough the neighborhood network pageit's actually on a dialog box that youpull up so they're not in the same placefortunately with that well next slideokayone of the strange things about it isArkham app or doesn't load the settingsfrom Samba configure in other wordswhat's there is its defaults not what'sin your Samba configures doc doc configso if I go in and fix those advancedsettings to whatever I really need andthen save it that's in my sambuca fikconfig but the next time I open thisthey will still all be checked so itlooks like it hasn't been fixed when infact it really actually has been fixedthat's true for basically all thesettings in there so you really don'tyou want to set it up once and then youdon't want to write to the settingsagain unless you are intentionallychanging those settings because it willblithely overwrite whatever you hadalready had in there and change it towhatever happens to be checked or notchecked in these various boxes okaynetwork printing isn't supported throughArkham a per you can do Network prettya couple of ways obviously cups isprobably the obvious one for anybodythat has a cups burner that works prettysmoothly I happen to have an old HPLaserJet that I can't get working withcups and I've found that there's an SMBprinter port which is shipped with ourCo s you just need to install thatprinter port it's easy to install withthe print manager and then justessentially print to that port one ofthe odd things about it is the FMP theSMB print exe doesn't work with parallelports in other words it's great ifyou're if the printer is attached theUSB port probably works great if it'sactually a network attached but I didfind that I can actually change thatconfiguration and substitute print expand it'll print it just fine to aparallel port the only problem with thatis it doesn't get rid of the spool filesand unfortunately that fills up unlessyou have a huge drive fills up a drivepretty quickly but I did finally justwrite a command file it don't goes inand deletes all those spool files in themiddle of the night so that that allworks alright yeah I can I couldprobably do that okay high memory youknow it'd be nice to be able to use allthat extra memory above 512 forapplications and stuff like that whichis the original limit in os/2 themozilla apps open office and clamavi atminimum you should probably use highmemory at least try using high mem theydo cause there are reports of somestability problems and some otherstrange hangs and stuff like that onsome systems with this but I thinkyou're better off trying it becausethere are a lot of reports when youdon't useof memory just getting completely eatenup you can either do it with high mamexe which is actually included with withOpenOffice or Exe header exe which isinstalled on our Co s and you can justtype it at the command line because it'sin the path and just you know type itwith a slash question mark and it willtell you what you need to do again awarnings about the stability and theanswer of why not everything the problemis that there are 20 some-oddlowest of the interface commands likeyou know das open I don't think das openis actually one of them but that are nothigh memory compatible so all of the oldprograms that were written from thisstraight from the tool kit withoutwrapper II knows they won't workthey won't even run in high memory youjust get error messages if you getanything so that's why you really can'tload things that haven't beenspecifically designed to be loaded highwe even tried to get FM 2 to work loadedhigh and wrapper to all the problems andeverything like thatwe never did succeed in getting it toreliably stable state be stable and workhigh we could get it to load high andwork but it would crash and do otherthings that it didn't do when it wasloaded low so that's that's why youdon't want to just go out and blithelystart setting everything all yourexecutables to run high next slide ifyou want to hide your floppy drive iconsthis is how you do it you just go to theinclude tab of the drives folder and youjust exclude them and it will take themout of the drives folder so you don'thave those two on moet what on mostsystems at least are just meaninglessicons you can do it in FM 2 with byadding this to the commandthe /a b space % star and just somethingto beautify your system next one of thethings that's in our TOS that probablyhas missed is clock sync you can sync itto the national time standards it's gota bunch of choices as to which one soyou can pick the one closest to you ituses a program called daytime as itsback end and if you go in here and setyour time zone in other words if firstwhatever reason your time zone didn'tget set properly you can just hit changeand it'll actually write it config dotsisyeah well but it could be a problem forother people on next slide ifx is alittle any cleaner that is included inArco s it gets rid of dead file handlesbasically it does have the ability tobackup and restore and it does backupeach time that it cleans it it alsobacks up the old ones so in case it didbreak something you can actually restorethat file obviously it's not areplacement for any cleaners or checkersnext slide these are some of the onesthat are out there check any clean anyunis me and Rick Walsh's remote workplace shell commands it has things likeicon edit where you can add where youcan remove bogus icons and stuff likethat so it's not an any cleaner orchecker in the classic sense but itgives you the ability to go in yourselfand remove stuff that you in other wordssome programs will do strange thingslike they will load their icon into theany file when in truth that's their iconanyways so it's just taking up space andany file for no particularly good reasonso you can remove some of those and youknow what the biggest offender forputting icons and nos to any is itsunimate all of its CMD files put puttheir icons into the in the OS toany so that's that's the one problemthat I have with unimate it's actuallyyou can actually now just download itand use it without a license and cleanany and check any the first two were thetwo that I actually use to any greatextentI do have uni mate but I don't use itthat much next some other usefulutilities at least in my view clip viewI think is really a must-have utility itjust gives you a list of of clips youcan have up to 21 and you can actuallyrun multiple ones of these which givesyou the ability on the other ones you'rerunning to actually lock the differentthings into it for things that you usevery regularly you know if you will yourname for example so you can just go inand pick it and and go ahead and justpaste it inthe other thing you can do is there is acommand-line switch which is I think -capital a which tells it to save aftereach clip being added it was somethingthat was important to me because I wouldget a bunch of stuff set up in it forsomething I was doing as for developmentand then I do something with thedevelopment I crashed the system and I'dhave to go back in because becauseoriginally it only saved when you closedit but so that's a nice featureparticularly if you like me do somethingthat crashes the system regularlyprobably said something about my codebut screen-capture utility is somethingthat's missing gotcha I don't know howmany of you are familiar with that butI've actually startedI've redeveloped it to to be a fullreplacement for the print screen forwhen you hit print screen so that it'llsimply save this instead of printing toa printer which I think very few peoplein this day and age are reallyinterested in from print screen it savesit to a file it will do it quietly or itwill give you the option of picking afile name it will give you all kinds ofoptions in other words anybody who'sused gotchait has the potential to give you all thechoices with god sure which includepicking a window picking a windowinterior just simply roping off asection of the screen or picking thewhole screen it will default to fullscreen if you just want it to do itsilently you can save the clipboardprint screen and shift print screenactually print to a file cantrol print screen will print it to theclipboard and alt printscreen pulls upits settings so you can change any ofthose things that you might like tochange and this gotcha screen that yousee here which is is how you do it thisis the old one obviously because I wastoo lazy to rebuild it and didn't have acopy of the new one the that screen isactually the front of the settingsscreen so that you can actually thenmanually do a print screen capture ifthat's what you want to do out of thesettings notebook it doesn'tyou into a printer no yeah you can youcan close it and then you get IBM'sprint screen back so so yes you can justnot whip it then other things is I thinkelse switcher should be installed bydefault but of course I develop Lswitchers so I'm probably biased inother words I think you should replacethe windows tray with itnc FTP is a very nice replacement forthe command lineIBM gives you large file support otherthings it's little easier to use andthen I would like to see a simplecalendar and by that I mean you know theone like the one you would hang on awall I don't want it to save myappointments I don't want anything Ijust want to be able to find out whatthe date is next Tuesday and therereally aren't any that I've been able tofind there's there's yeah it's not ait's not just a calendar thoughyeah and of course you have to have IBMworks but but the also there's a coupleof Java calendars out there that areactually basically that also which iswhat I actually use is J calendar
