hello everybody and welcome back toanother video today we're going to betalking all about the wonderful world ofos2 I know I've said this in previousvideos but this operating system remainsa fascinating piece of software to meback in the late 1980s the dynamic duoof Microsoft and IBM had joined theirefforts to create what many in theindustry believed to be the operatingsystem that would define the world ofpersonal Computing for years to comeeven Bill Gates himself was quoted assaying I believe os2 is destined to bethe most important operating system andpossibly program of all time butunfortunately for IBM os2 remains only afootnote in the story of the personalcomputer overshadowed by MicrosoftWindows it never saw the massive successthat big blue had hoped but that's notto say that os2 was a complete flop infact it still finds specialized use tothis day from ATMs to even New YorkCity's subway system at least until 2024when MetroCard is completely phased outand today's video focuses on one of theprojects that attempts to keep os2 aliveand well in the modern day for use onModern Hardware it's called ARCA OS anoperating system based on OS 2 that'sofficially licensed by IBM it was firstannounced in 2015 although you wouldn'tbe able to tell that from this video ofthe presentation that looks and soundslike it was filmed in 1993. the thirdquarter of 2016 is our Target we don'twant to comeHalf Baked and we don't want to haveseven release candidates like some otheroperating system and it was intended tobe a successor of sorts 2 Ecom stationanother project that aimed to make aversion of os2 that was compatible withmodern computers at the time Ecomstation hadn't been updated in fouryears in fact it still hasn't though youcan purchase it to this day if youwanted to Shell out 340 ARCA OS on theother hand is still in activedevelopment it received its latestrelease 5.0.7 at the end of 2021 andthere are plans for a 5.1 release in thefuture so I thought we'd check it outtoday and see what it has to offer soour computer of choice for this video isgoing to be the Dell Latitude d610 and Igot to give a huge thank you to Sean forletting me borrow his copy of ARCA OSwhich I've got in this computer rightnow now if you were to purchase Arcosand download the disk image file fromthem it's going to come in at around 1.3gigabytes so are going to have to have aDVD or a USB drive to install this onanother computer because you can't putthis on a CD that's for sure so yeahwe're going to go ahead and just exitout of the setup here and it's justgoing to start booting off of the CD andwe're going to boot with default valuesnow the reason why I chose this Delllaptop is because you know you can'tnormally put os2 on this thing I meanyou guys probably saw from my twoattempts to install os2 2.1 and os2 warp3. on well I used a couple of computersin those videos all of which weremanufactured after long after theversions of os 2 I was trying to installon them so we of course ran into a bunchof problems and we would experiencethose same problems on this laptop righthere but not with ARCA OS because it isdesigned with newer Hardware in mind sothe installer loads up we get theworkplace shell prompt there which isgoing to minimize and it's going to openup the installer and here it is Welcometo our OS so you got to pick a font sizewe're going to choose large becausethat'll show up better on video andyou've got your input settings keyboardand mouse whether you're right-handed orleft-handed for the mouse there now thesystem management button here will bringup a they call it a utility desktopwhich is just you know you can getaccess to certain utilities like commandprompts and various tools and things ifyou're wanting to troubleshoot yourexisting install if you want to open upDisk Utility right from here you can dothat we're just going to restart theinstaller you've got your licenseagreement which you have to scroll allthe way to the bottom to get the optionto agree to it so we're going to do justthat next up it has you select theinstallation type you do have a fewdifferent options here the easiest wayto get through this is to choose apredefined personality as they're calledwhich are just predefined configurationsas it says up here and we're going to gowith single volume with default optionsbut you do have a few different optionsin here you could also go with custom orscripted we're just going to go with thedefault option there because that's finefor the purposes of this video and nowit's going to ask you where you want toinstall it to now this hard drive inhere I believe has been formatted Idon't think there's anything on it sowe're going to have to click on managevolumes we're going to create a volumeon it we're going to go with a standardbootable volume and we're going to callit drive letter C and we'll just name itARCA OS we're going to use it as theprimary partition we'll use all of thespace on the drive yes we want to saveour changes and now we should yep therewe go so you've got two differentoptions for the file system you can gowith JFS the journaled file system orthe hpfs high performance file systemwe're just going to go with JFS you cancheck for errors while formatting if youwant we're not really going to botherwith that for this video but the optionis there for you next up is yourlocation settings we're just going toleave all of this at the default becauseit's correct for me now this configureHardware screen is very importantbecause you're going to want to gothrough here and make sure everything isset up to your liking first up is basiccompatibility you want to make sure ifyou're running this on Vintage Hardwarethat you select vintage Hardware we'reon Modern Hardware so we're just goingto stick with that we're going todefinitely grab all of the USBcontrollers and for audio we're justgoing to go with the universal audiodriver also worth noting is if you wereinstalling this in a virtual machineyou've got the option to installvirtualbox guest editions right fromhere nothing for VMware though which iswhat I use most of the time but hey it'snice to see virtualbox in here so withall that said we're going to click onnext and it looks like it's found ournetwork adapter which is great becauseit is a broadcom ethernet adapter soit's going to install that you could addadditional adapters if you you know ifit didn't detect anything here there isa wireless adapter in here but I don'treally know if we'd be able to get thatworking with ARCA OS but ethernet willbe fine for us for this video so we'rejust going to go with that and we'll hitnext and now you got to give yourcomputer a name which we will call alljust ARCA why not now you select yourwork group default username we'll doMichael and we'll hit next and finallyyou've got your confirmation screen soit goes through a summary of all theoptions that you selected and it saysplease note the Arcos system volume willbe reformatted and all data on it willbe lost so we're gonna hit next and haveit do that[Music]oh listen to that we get a startup soundthat's pretty nice I wasn't actuallyexpecting that but yeah if you've usedos2 which you can see clearly I have notbecause I keep thinking this is close ifyou've used those two Arcos will be veryfamiliar to you you'll feel right athome because it's designed to you know Imean it is based on os2 so it's kind ofgoing to use the same interface a lot ofthe user interface elements are going tobe in the same places but it does addsome additional programs like forexample a web browser you've got Firefoxinstalled on here by default if we gointo installed software and we go into Ibelieve it's uh well there's Thunderbirdthere's Firefox right there so we canopen this up yay there it is so let'ssee what version this is I believe thisis a Firefox ESR yep Firefox ESR45.9.0 this was released back in 2017 soagain not like the latest browser thoughI don't really know if like there areany updated browsers for Arcos ifthere's anything newer than this but youknow chances are if you're using Arc OSon a computer it's not to browse the webor check your email or anything likethat it's going to be to run os2applications that you just don't have away of running otherwise and we're goingto demonstrate that here with wordperfect for os2 of course the bestversion of Word Perfect I mean Iwouldn't know I've never used it beforebut I'm sure somebody thinks that it isso we're going to uh get this out of thebox here we'll do a quick littleunboxing here and oh yeah by the waythis cost uh 500 let me grab the uh Ithink it's on the top of this here yeah500 bucks you can't really see that letme get the camera to focus in here495 dollars U.S yeah definitely a decentchunk of change to pay for word perfectbut that's what you would have to Forkover back in the day we also have ourtransition guide and our workbook righthere uh we'll go ahead and just setthose aside because what we're mostinterested in is the software which iscontained in this little box here thebox within the Box we do have some morereading material and stuff inside ofhere we've got a certificate of licenselook at that so there's proof that thisis legit got a few other pamphlets andreading material but let's grab thediskettes and oh we've got the littlekeyboard thing as well we'll just setthat aside for now the disc gets we havethe original shrink wrap for thediskettes in here as well let's see howmany there are we have seven we haveseven floppy to sketch and interestinglyenough apparently disc 2 was likemisprinted or something because liketake a look at disk one here you see howyou know the numbers right next to theword disk disk two you got that littleblack out there and then it's got twolike typed onto it like from a typeright writer so I don't know maybe thisis an ultra rare misprint of WordPerfect version 5.2 for os2 but we'regoing to grab a USB floppy Drive we'regoing to see if we can even use that onhere because you know there's no floppydisk drive in this laptop as it is andwe'll see if we can install wordperfectfor os2 alright so slight change ofplans it turns out that the USB floppyDrive the three USB floppy drives that Itried to use on that laptop would notshow up in ARCA OS now Arcos doessupport USB devices and I can plug in aUSB flash drive and it shows up justfine but trying to use any of the USBfloppy drives I had was not working outat all now I did read that it issupported I just decided to install ARCAOS on the 2000s computer that hero rareheart sent me a little while ago thankyou very much once again which has aninternal floppy drive that we can pop inWord Perfect diskette number one into solet's do the that right now the otherthing I realized is during arcos'sinstallation on the Dell Latitude Irealized that I had selected the basicVGA driver which meant that it wasrunning in a lower color mode and wecouldn't change anything so I've goneahead and selected a more appropriatedriver for this computer and you can seethat we've got a a much higher truercolor mode running here which is greatso we can see everything as it was meantto be seen so we're going to go into thedrives folder and we're going to doubleclick on drive aand we've got sound working as well asyou can hear let's try to double clickon drive a again because apparently itdidn't open up there we go and we'regoing to runinstall.exe so we're going to go withthe custom install just to see whatoptions we get and we're going to clickon install Define where WordPress OSDfiles are installed from so you you canchange the source that is nice uh we canchoose where it's going to be installedto I think all the defaults will be justfine for us what files to install nowhere is where we can select kind of whatcomponents we want it looks like it haseverything checked and you know whatwe're just going to grab everythingbecause we've got plenty of space onthis hard drive you can choose betweenthe CUA or you know os2 standardkeyboard or the Dos Word Perfect 5.1keyboard so you know if if you were usedto running Word Perfect under dos youmight want to select uh that keyboardwe're just going to go with the CUAkeyboard that's fine for us here printerwe're not really going to bother withyou know what why not we'll install theprinter driver even though uh we don'treally have a printer on here at all andlet's maybe select uh I don't know let'sget an Epson Apex 80 and we'll startinstallation the big question of the dayis of course do all of these disketteswork I certainly hope they do but we dohave seven of them to go through hereand oh I was just going to say it didn'tlook like it was making much progressbut it just jumped up to six percent now22 percent so that's goodand we're gonna pop in disk at numbertwo I do really like that sound effectby the way oh no oh no disk at numbersixis uh apparently damaged or something ohno it can't read from this file this isthe first time in a long time that I'vehad an install or actually throw up anerror saying that it couldn't read froma disk we're at 99 does it really needto copy that over or can I try againoh no 116 what 133 percent nowso yeah it's definitely oh my gosh 140149 it's definitely screwing up I guessit finished it didn't ask for Discountnumber seven this is uh PostScript typeone font so this might be an optionalthing uh no we don't want to view toread me I hope it installed properly andI hope those are just like optionalfiles that it doesn't need that aren'tlike core files that the program needsto open up but yeah it says it's beensuccessfully installedand okay it has to modify the config.systhat's fineupdating the workplace at this time youmay also install PostScript okay here itis do you want to install the fonts nowlet's say yes and see if this get numberseven works I'm gonna put disk at sixaside so that I can make a mental noteof itand let's see if number seven wants tocooperate with us today all right here'sall the fonts let's get all of them wehave to reboot our computer beforerunning word perfect okay so let's goahead and do that we'll eject thediskette as well now to restart all wegot to do is if I haven't already demoedthis you just go down here to the Arcosmenu go to shutdown and we're going toselect reboot[Music]hooray there we go isn't that lovely nowif you haven't noticed I mean we youprobably have this thing going on hereyou might be wondering what this is thisis multiple desktops which is reallynice so we could open up like a computerwindow here and you can see it draws alittle shape there to represent that wehave that window open and I can click onhere to go to a different desktop Ithink you can move or no you cannot soyou can't move this is not like uh roomsXerox rooms for Windows 3.1 where youcan just drag stuff from this interfaceI did a video on rooms by the way reallycool piece of softwareum that I think definitely deserves moreattention so check that out if you wantto I guess but yeah so you got multipledesktops you know you can do multipledesktop things with them so we're gonnago you see we got this new um icon onthe desktop for word perfect for os2we're just going to open that up andlet's open up plain old word perfect andsee if it works now it asks us for thelicense number okay I'm gonna have tograb the software here because I don'tthink we can oh we can just all right Iguess we don't have to enter a licensenumber in that's great can we actuallyuse the programI guess we canso that's nice I wonder if there'scertain functions of the program thatare disabled until you activate it orenter a license key yeah license numberedit license number okay what does itsay Word Perfect Rose 2 will run even ifyou don't enter a license number howeveryou'll need your license number laterwhen you upgrade your software okay soit'll still run so yeah we're just gonnaI mean I think you could enter inanything right yeah you could enter inwhatever you want we could put mjd asthe license number uh program releaseJuly 20th 1993 share dll release on thesame day so there you go and yeah so wecan type let me move the floppy tosketch out of the way so I can actuallyuse the keyboard properly we can typeout you know hello worldall right whoops uh I did not what did Ido did I just infer I think I justinverted uh I just tried to press Ctrl aand it says file control a DOT wcm notfound search for that was probably oneof the files I was trying to copy over Idon't know exactly what I did tolike invert the colors herebut it's actually kind of coolso you can't select all can we like copylet's see if I can like Ctrl Cuhyeah so you can copy and paste that'sgood I still don't know exactly what Idid to invert the Colors Let's justclose out of it and not save changes andopen it back up and let's just try Okayuh hello worldI just got okay so I just got to the endof the line and I hit enter and thenthat apparently inverts the colors forsomereason hello world I am typing thisdocument if I can spell right on a mid2000s computerthat was donated to me by Herorare heart who I want to thank againvery much this is ARCA OS wordperfect5.2 for os2 isn't that fitting now canwe control suh that apparently opens up the fontsize menu okay file oh shift F3 okay soit's just a different keyboard shortcuthere shift F3 and we're gonna save as uhjust mjd we'll save this to uh let's seehere let's save it to the root of the Cdrive so that's Word Perfect of courseyou got all your other word perfectrelated things in here thesaurus spellerquick finder all that good stuff you gotyour file manager here this is not avideo about Word Perfect though so I'mnot gonna really dive into all of thisbut it goes to show you that it you knowit works totally fine this is a versionof Word Perfect for os2 Works totallyfine here on Arcos and it would workcompletely if uh disk at number six herewas not corrupted or screwed up inwhatever way that it screwed up but atleast we can launch the program and typea document that's fine with me I do findit funny how you can't use the control akeyboard shortcut although I I wonder ifthat would even select everythingbecause I wonder if that's a differentlike can you do file or probably underthe edit menu editis there a select all oh here selectsentence okay is there there's not aselect all yeah it has to be because I'mhitting Ctrl a here and it's selectingall so it just oh no I did not want to Idid not want to execute everything oh noum okay we gotta well I said I wasn'tgonna open everything up I guess I justtechnically did so uh yeah hopefullythat will oh my gosh no no no no nolet's take a look at some of the otherthings ARCA OS has to offer because ifwe go into programs here we've got youknow some games here you've got MahjongSolitaire chess and Klondike Solitaireso I believe this is yeah just os2 chesslet's go to proct information here sothis is an original os2 program heredeveloped by IBM which appears to beunchanged so yeahthere you go it's os2 chess we've gotKlondike Solitairewhich I think is another os2standard program yep there it is version3.0and we've got Mahjong Solitaire which ohthat's a directory okay let's open upand let's see product information yepit's an IBM programcopyright 93 95 version 2.2 oh my goshthat's rather obnoxious so it just playsthat sound effectwhile you're here in the about menu soyeah but there it is soyou got Mahjong we'll go ahead and closeout of that and not save so yeah gotsome games in here to pass the time whenwhen you have down time or whatever ifwe go into your installed software thisis the folder we took a look at on thelaptop because this is where Firefox iswhere Thunderbird is you've got a fewother things you've got uh it looks likea VNC server and I assume a client herethat's a nice pmvnc you've got uh PMDcalc okay so you got like a calculatorprogram here one of the other neatthings Arc OS offers is if we go intocomputer here and go into system setupthis is where we've got all of your yoursystem settings essentially so you canmodify Mouse settings the the keyboardsettings you've got the registry editorin here and you've also got the packagemanager right here now we're on thenetwork so we'll be able to connect tothe server it has to connect to but yeahyou can just uh browse through here andand select various packages to installso here's all of our installed packagesI could also go to available over hereand this should give us a list ofeverything that we can install so we gotsome Adobe fonts here so let's say Iwanted to grab I don't know ffmpeg so Icould right click on this hit installand so it's got a few dependencies thatit needs so we'll just get everythingbut yeah I mean it's it's nice thatthere's a package manager on here I meanthat just gives you access to as you sawan absolute ton of uh packages in herethat you could install on ARCA OS andwhile it's doing this we could also justdrag this over here and I actually kindof like how the uh like progress barmoves around you can see it's not likeall the way contained in the window sowe can kind of like mess with the windowmanager a little bit here which is kindof funny so yeah we'll just kind of dragthis down here we'll let it um oractually here's what we're gonna do wejust move to another desktop boom thereyou go so let's let everything do itsthing on here it looks like it's abouthalfway done with the packages here it'sgot to update and let's take a look atwin os2 which was obviously a whoops ohI guess when you open up computer onethat's already open it just brings youthe desktop that it's open on so we'llget out of all this and we'll go backhere and open up computer and let's gointo actually it's underum yeah it's under command prompts herethat's right so we could start a win os2session of course it was one of the bigselling points of os2 is that it was abetter dos than dos and a better Windowsand windows because you could run os2Windows and dos applications all underone system so we could start a Windows 2session in a window here you could alsodo it full screen and yeah it's it's theWindows 3.1 program manager that you'veprobably seen many times before on thischannel and also you know if you've usedWindows 3.1 in the past it does identifyitself as win OS 2 though if you go intoabout program manager it'll say IBMWindows 2 program manager and you've gotIBM and Microsoft written in here but itis version 3.1 so you know you could runWindows 3.1 programs and uh you know Idon't have any on hand but I mean youguys you guys all know how that workslet's be honest we could even go in hereand go to control panel and we couldmess around with the color a little bitwe could change this to like the Arizonacolor scheme so there you go and yeahit's Windows 3.1 or Windows 2 if youwant to be proper here which I alwayslove this about os2 I found it reallyfascinating and os2 itself and I knowthat I keep saying this and I said it atthe beginning of this video too but Ireally want to do like a full in-depthvideo on it someday it's going to bequite the undertaking I think because Iwould want to put together a really nicelike long-form documentary type thingand I've got a few video projects likethat just really long form kind ofdocumentary-ish stuff that you know I'vesome I've started to work on uh they'rethey're just they just take a lot oftime man I mean I I know I've mentionedthe like Bliss video time and time againis a prime example of that but that wasa massive undertaking and it took monthsand months and months to get finishedwhile also working on other videoprojects like this uh so that you guyswill still have you know like consistentuh content to watch on this channel inthe meantime so I definitely want to domore of the long-form documentary stuffthis year I definitely hope I can get atleast like one really well craftedlong-form documentary out on the channelbefore 2023 is over but we'll see howthings go because you know things canchange pretty rapidly here in YouTubelandum but yeah so it looks like the packagemanager has finished installing all ofits stuff there so we'll close out ofthat and yeah I mean that is pretty muchARCA OS just a brief overview of itanyway this is certainly not foreverybody I should highly emphasize thatthis operating system to get a licenseit costs over a hundred bucks and you'llpay like around 200 bucks if you get theprofessional license for like commercialuseum so you know it's not for everybodyit's really just for those people thathave os2 applications that they need torun on Modern Hardware or just want amore easy convenient way to run os2programs without having to like buy anold os2 system or use virtualizationtoolsum but yeah it's an option it's outthere and I want to
