hello everybody and welcome back toanother video now in today's episodewe're going to be doing the heavilyrequested follow-up to my BOS videobecause yes this is the Haiku video nowI was going to do this video regardlessbut it was really cool to see the amountof people that commented on my BOS videosaying yeah we'd love to see a video onHaiku so I want to give a huge thank youto everybody who requested this now youmay be asking yourself what on Earth ishaiku well we're not talking about poemstoday no no no this is the open sourcespiritual successor to BOS that is stilldeveloped and maintained to this day infact the latest release came out inDecember of 2022 which is prettybrilliant just like today's videosponsor brilliant.org who I'll betalking more about later on Haiku itselfhas been around since the early 2000spretty much right around the time BIncorporated got bought up by Palm whoeventually discontinued BOS back thenthe project was known as open BOS buteventually they changed the name toavoid any potential trademark disputeswith palm and the name Haiku has a bitof an interesting origin story yes it'sobviously named after the Poetry formbut it's also a bit of a nod to theerror messages of all things that weredisplayed in bos's web browser netpositive because instead of regularmessages or error codes these took theform of haikus yeah it's probably themost creative way to display an errormessage that I've ever seen in anoperating system but this was acommunity effort the open BOS team ran apoll to decide the new name and Haikuwas the winner not Haiku OS as manypeople tend to call it but simply Haikuthe reason why so many people call itHaiku OS is because of the domain nameHaiku os.org which is only used becausethe developers have had trouble gettingtheir hands on the haiku.org domain butanyways just like its adoptive parentlet's say haiku is not a Linux distroand it's not based on Linux at all infact it's not even based on BOS thoughit does use some BOS code as it containsnewer iterations of both the desk barand tracker file manager that beincorporated open sourced shortly beforetheir demise what it is based on is thenew OS kernel which was written by aformer B employee and it often getsgrouped in with BOS and called themodern version of BOS because itbasically is I mean technicalities asidebecause I know some people love thosethis is the OS to use if you have someold POS program that you need to run ona modern system because it's your bestchance at doing that and it's a greatway to try out what BOS was like if youdon't have a way of installing itbecause the user interface is extremelysimilar if not identical and you can usemodern programs as well because a bunchhave been ported over plus the systemrequirements aren't that demanding atall Haiku can run on a pentium-basedsystem with 400 megabytes of RAM butthey do recommend at least a Pentium 4with half a gigabyte of ram so we'regoing to be using a Pentium for thoughthis computer right here has onegigabyte of ram instead of half agigabyte so we are a little bit over therecommended system requirements uh thisis actually the 2000s mystery PC that Idid a video on a while back this was aviewer donation from hero rare heartthank you very much once again and youcan see we've got Haiku installed orwait no we don't because this isactually running off of the CD uh yesbecause Haiku provides a live CD that'sone of the really nice things about itso you can put in this CD on one of yourspare computers or in a virtual machineor whatever you want to use it on andjust try it out before actuallyinstalling it to your hard drive but weare going to install a 2R hard drive sowe're going to double click on theinstaller right here to bring that upand we'll click on continue and thefirst thing it'll do is let us know thatit couldn't find any partitions toinstall haiku on so we're going tocreate one we'll go into drive setuphere and select the empty space on ourDrive because there's nothing on thisand we're going to create a new BFSpartition now the BFS or B file systemthis was the 64-bit capable journalingfile system that BOS uses and Haikumakes use of it as well so we're goingto write changes we'll format it to theB file system and continue and we'lljust go with all the default values hereand select format and write changes andit's been formatted so now we'll closeout a drive setup we go back into hereand we should be able to select Haiku sowe're going to install from Haiku thedisk onto Haiku the hard drive and we'llhit begin and that's all there is to itwe'll let it do its thing and we're doneso we're just going to quit out of theinstaller and we'll go up here to theHaiku menu and go to shutdown we'llrestart the system and here's the Haikuboot screen one of the things I loveabout this is they made it moremodernized looking compared to what BOShad but they kept the like grayscale tofull color fading of the applicationsthat are on the boot screen in there tokind of you know show the food processyou know how far you've gotten along sothat's a nice touch and here we are onthe desktop so if you used BOS back inthe day this will look very familiar toyou you'll feel right at home and thatis by Design because Haiku is meant tobe easily switchable to from somebodywho was using BOS so you've got the sameUI elements you got the desk bar up herethough they have applied a modern coatof paint to all this stuff so comparedto the BOS desk bar the Haiku one looksmore modern more Sleek which I think isdefinitely a nice touch so we'll go tothe about menu here so you can see theexact version number that we're runningthis is a Pentium 4 with hyper threadingso it shows up as having two processorsa 2.79 gigahertz and we've got aroundone gigabyte of memory it even shows thesystem uptime as well down here nowlet's get into some of the things thatmakes Haiku different from bos one ofthose things is replicants now thesewere a thing in BOS but I just didn'treally touch on them in my BIOS videobut replicants you can think of them asWidgets or gadgets they were basicallylittle applets that can run on yourdesktop uh even when the applicationthat it pertains to is closed so forexample here this about dialogue has areplicant and that's indicated by thislittle hand icon down here so what I cando if I want to sort of pin thisapplication to my desktop and have it asa running widget of sorts I can justdrag this little hand icon and you seeit makes a nice outline here and I justdrag it wherever I want on the desktopand let go and now this information willbe displayed on the desktop at all timesso I can close out of the about systemdialog and it's still here I can move itaround if I want to I think it's reallyneat now BOS uh had the clockapplication and this was one of theapplications in BOS that had the abilityto make a replicant of it so you seewe've got this hand icon down here wecan just drag that maybe we want theclock to be over here and I can click onthis to uh change the skin here there'seven this nice uh BOS one or the BIncorporated logo and again thisfunctionality was in BOS but Haiku justexpands it to more applications andspeaking of applications if we go intothe applications folder here you'll seethat Haiku has way more applicationsthan BOS did it adds some newapplications it adds some ModernReplacements to some of the applicationsthat were in BOS for example the webpositive web browser is the replacementto bos's net positive web browser butthis is a modern web browser so you seeit displays this Haiku page totally fineI can go to google.com it'll displaythis page completely normally and yeahit displays the page and you know itperforms pretty well especially on thissuper old Hardware that we've got theoperating system installed on so yeahyou've got a modern web browser anapplication we have that was not in BOSis the activity monitor so this givesyou a live graph view of your RAM andCPU usage and you can see both of thesewe can make replicants of so if I wantto add the CPU usage graph to my desktopI can just drag here and drop it theremaybe we'll do the same with the memoryand we'll drop that like right on top ofthat one and there we go I can drag inthese two you know if I want it to belike really zoomed out or super zoomedin and of course we can do that in theactual application here too you can alsoright click on this to add additionalthings so if I want to show CPU speed ifI want to show CPU usage combinedNetwork receiving just really load thisup with all kinds of stuff and just makethe make the graph like super small andjust have all this stuff on the bottomum page faults and yeah now you can likebarely see the see the graph at all butyou see if we expand the window therethen it shows up just fine so but yeahthat's the activity monitor and just togive you a rundown here of theapplications that are in Haiku that arenot in BOS so we've got activity monitorB PDF character map desk calc which isdown here devices you've got disk usageDrive setup you've got Haiku Depot whichis kind of the modern replacement forthe software valet applications it'skind of like the App Store where you canview and download a ton of applicationsactually we'll get into this in a momenticonomatic is an icon creation toolYou've Got Mail which replaces bmailthat was in BOS you've got a mediaconverter you've got T which is a texteditor let's open up here and brieflyshow you that so there you go you've gotsoftware updater pretty self-explanatoryuh let's see here Vision this is an IRCclient web positive we already took alook at and wonder brush this is like apaint uh Slash you know Arts creationtool you know you got brushes here soyeah you've got quite the variety ofapplications in here though there aresome things that were in BOS that arenot here in haiku the most notable thingI think is the 3D mix application thiswas that 3D audio mixing tool that webriefly talked about in my BOS videothat is not in here and there's no likemodern replacement for it we also don'thave things like the CD burner and theCD player not that you'd really needthose uh if you're using this on like amodern system that probably wouldn'teven have a CD drive anyway one of theother things that IQ does is it moves uhsome of the applications that were inthe applications folder to other areasuh you know on the system so the demosfolder here this is now where the clockand pulse applications live both ofthese were in BOS we were taking a lookat the clock application the pulseapplication is the CPU like usage graphmonitoring tool you can see this timethough since this is a dual core or atleast a single core with hyper threadingprocessor it shows up as having twographs here and it shows the name of theprocessor as well though it is a littlebit off of the image here um but yeah sothat's pulse it is still in here and wedo have a bunch of other stuff in demosas well so we've got things like Haiku3D we do have things like the GLT potthis was in BOS and we've got a versionof it here too I think this is myfavorite one out of all the things thatwere in the demos folder uh notablymissing from the demos folder though isthe Minesweeper application that is notin here and it hasn't been moved intoapplications or anything like that alsospeaking of things that they rearrangedthe workspaces application that was inpreferences is now in desktop appletsand this uh this desktop apples folderis an entirely new category in here butthis really makes sense I think havingthe workspaces application inpreferences was kind of a bizarreplacement because you know this isn'treally a preference it's just like anapplication that lets you switch betweenmultiple desktops so we can do that hereand you can see all of our replicantsremain on each of our desktops andspeaking of replicants haiku gives youthe ability to make a replicant out ofthe workspace his application which issuper nice so I can drag this down hereand let go of the mouse and now we'vegot a nice permanent widget forswitching between our multiple desktopsone of the things I really want to showyou in here is the launch boxapplication because this creates a sortof taskbar quick launch dock thing thatyou can have here you can move it aroundwherever you want and you can pinapplications to it to make them reallyeasily accessible to you so we've got abunch of default ones here but if I wantto maybe let's uh you know right clickhere we can add a button and then all Igotta do is go into applications or youknow wherever I want let's say I wantthe mail program well that's already onhere let's get uh let's get the webpositive web browser I can drag thatright to here but now I've got a reallyeasy way just to launch that whenever Iwant to this honestly gives me a NextStep doc Vibes I don't know why that isI think it's just because of the waythat Haiku is laid out here it doesremind me of next step and open stuff incertain ways and just having this dockhere like on the side of the screen onthe right side that's where the nextstep dock was uh so that just kind ofyou know makes me think of it but oh yeswe can have this here you can you knowpin a bunch of applications to it like Ican just add like a bunch of buttons andI think as you add buttons uh no itactually does not create like a scrollbar or anything but let's see let's justkeep trying to add more buttons and seeif there's like a maximum hereadd add yeah it'll just go off thescreen so it doesn't like condenseeverything into having like a scroll barso you definitely would not want to havelike a bunch of stuff on here if you'rerunning the system at like a resolutionlike we're running this 800 by 600 sohaving all this stuff on here doesn'treally make sense because we can't getaccess to a lot of it so uh althoughlet's see here settings oh you canchange the icon size look at that that'ssuper useful so there we go I just fiteverything on this uh you know on thisone monitor here uh we can also I saw inthere there was if I right click herehorizontal layout now this is giving meMac OS 9 Vibes you know the littletoolbar you can pull out from the leftside of the screen this is reminding meof that so um yeah so you can have it inhorizontal or vertical configuration andlet's just pin a bunch of like randomstuff to it just to fill this up uh andyes you can have multiple shortcuts ofthe same thing it wouldn't really makesense to do that but I can make likethese three here the same applicationlet's get maybe magnet five soundrecorder style that it there we go soand you see some of the stuff we alreadyhad on here but yeah and let's maybe uhyou know right click here again justmake the icon size maybe a little bitlarger and have that down here and thereyou go just a quick side note here youcan see with all this stuff running inthe background we've our CPU usage isdefinitely getting up there and I canhear the system fan is starting toreally spin up uh so maybe we want toclose out of some of this to uh let itrelax a little bit so there we go I'mjust dropping down now let's get back touser interface changes for a second hereone of the really cool things that Haikuadds is the ability to have multipleapplications in Windows combined into asingle window with separate tabs andwhat I mean by that is like for exampleI've got the applications window openedup here in the tracker file browser soif I want to open up let's say activitymonitor here I can open this up if Iwere to then drag this tab here and holddown the option key and I drag drag iton top of this applications tab you cansee how the outline of it changes thereif I let go it will then combine thesetwo separate applications into onewindow with separate tabs that I canthen move around now I mentioned this inthe BOS video that I thought this was afeature in BOS and some people in thecomments did too I got a couple peoplesaying that they thought this wasintroduced in BOS this was not in BOS atall this was introduced in Haiku in BOSwhat you would have to do if you wantedto kind of mimic this ability is let'sgo ahead and drag this out here what youhave to do is drag the window on top ofthe other window and hold down the shiftkey and then you can move the tabwherever you want on this window so youcan have it over here and then just kindof layer the windows on top of eachother and sort of switch between themlike as if they're a single window eventhough they're not but Haiku makes itmuch easier you can actually make itinto a single window and drag the entirething around now just a quick note theoption key when you're using a Windowskeyboard anyway is mapped by default tothe Windows key but in this case becauseI'm using the model M which does nothave a Windows key I had to open up thekey map preference panel here to modifythat so you can see here's where theWindows key normally is and that's theoption key so I actually map the optionkey to the caps lock key so I can let'ssay we want to drag the key map intohere I mean you can do this with like somany applications here like I can openup you know the TV application I candrag that in here I mean it's so coolit's one of the coolest things aboutHaiku one of my other favorite thingsabout Haiku is the Haiku Depot which islike I mentioned earlier the App Storeof sorts so this gives you a listing ofa bunch of packages that you candownload and install on your system andthere's a lot of stuff in here you'llsee as it reads the repository data herethere's like over 4 000 things there itis4263 items so I can scroll down hereyou've got separate category gorylistings as well but I'm just going todownload a LibreOffice because I figurethat's a good demo program so I'llsearch for LibreOffice here and here wego LibreOffice x86 a full officeproductivity Suite we'll go ahead andinstall it now whenever you install apackage it will let you know the changesthat it has to make so sometimes that'sdownload you know dependencies for thepackage you want to actually functionproperly so you see it's got a bunch ofthose here it has to uninstall somestuff as well so we'll hit apply changesand let it do its thing all right so theinstallation is completed we're going toclose out of that and it asks us torestart so we'll do that in a momenthere but yeah there's just a ton ofstuff in here and there's also you cango in here to uh preferences and go torepositories and you can add additionalrepositories for haiku Depot to pullfrom if you would like but let's goahead and restart so we'll go toshutdown restart system so now we can gointo applications here we've got a newLibreOffice folder and let's open upLibreOffice writer so I can write youknow hello world I am writing thisdocument on Haiku it's pretty awesomeuh yeah I mean it's just really cool tosee a mainstream application likeLibreOffice though I don't know if youconsider LibreOffice to be mainstreambut it's the first thing that I think ofwhen I think of free alternatives toMicrosoft Office it's the first thingthat comes to mind and again there's aton of applications over 4 000 that youcan install from the Haiku uh packagemanager Haiku Depot I forgot the name ofit for a second there but yeah that is alittle demonstration of what Haiku hasto offer I've honestly been reallyimpressed as I've been going throughusing this OS and I really think thatwith these system requirements being aslow as they are for this thing thatHaiku could be a great candidate toinstall on Old Hardware of courseapplication support is a major factorbut again if all you want to do is havea machine to browse the web and do someemail other lightweight office stuff itdefinitely might be worth checking outHaiku to install on an old system orjust mess around in a virtual machinebecause
