start="442.56" dur="2.96">going to read um</text><text start="445.599" dur="4.801">the problem with this book is that um</text><text start="448.8" dur="3.2">you know but part of the conceit of it</text><text start="450.4" dur="3.359">is that all the different bits are</text><text start="452" dur="3.52">different from each other stylistically</text><text start="453.759" dur="4.56">so you&amp;#39;re experiencing</text><text start="455.52" dur="4.32">stylistic shifts often meaning that if i</text><text start="458.319" dur="2.88">were to read you one bit you would think</text><text start="459.84" dur="3.199">that you know</text><text start="461.199" dur="4.481">that that bit might represent the whole</text><text start="463.039" dur="4.081">and and there&amp;#39;s no bit that is like</text><text start="465.68" dur="2.56">other bits so</text><text start="467.12" dur="2.639">um</text><text start="468.24" dur="3.76">you know what i thought i might read to</text><text start="469.759" dur="4">you um</text><text start="472" dur="3.44">yeah okay i&amp;#39;m going to just do one for</text><text start="473.759" dur="3.201">now and then if we want to</text><text start="475.44" dur="5.12">come back</text><text start="476.96" dur="3.6">i&amp;#39;ll tell you a little bit about this um</text><text start="480.96" dur="4">a lot of the book is is is a true</text><text start="483.68" dur="3.12">account of things that have happened to</text><text start="484.96" dur="2.799">me and some of it is</text><text start="486.8" dur="4.32">very much</text><text start="487.759" dur="5.28">not true some of it is lies</text><text start="491.12" dur="4.24">and some of it is stuff that almost</text><text start="493.039" dur="3.84">happened or or could have happened or</text><text start="495.36" dur="3.6">happened slightly differently to the way</text><text start="496.879" dur="3.44">that i i record it here so</text><text start="498.96" dur="4.48">um</text><text start="500.319" dur="5.521">what i&amp;#39;m about to record to you is uh a</text><text start="503.44" dur="5.36">fictionalized</text><text start="505.84" dur="6.319">um on the first piece of</text><text start="508.8" dur="5.039">hate mail that i ever received um</text><text start="512.159" dur="4.56">and you know</text><text start="513.839" dur="5.44">i will read you the the the letter</text><text start="516.719" dur="4.401">um but of course i just um i want you to</text><text start="519.279" dur="3.521">know that</text><text start="521.12" dur="3.68">i wrote it you know i&amp;#39;m sure that&amp;#39;s</text><text start="522.8" dur="4.159">obvious but i don&amp;#39;t want anyone to think</text><text start="524.8" dur="4.88">anyway</text><text start="526.959" dur="4.721">the following day was monday it was</text><text start="529.68" dur="4.96">and i received an anonymous note in the</text><text start="531.68" dur="4.56">mail it was postmarked new york new york</text><text start="534.64" dur="3.84">and the handwritten address read</text><text start="536.24" dur="5.12">professor grace library the new</text><text start="538.48" dur="6">professor english department uc berkeley</text><text start="541.36" dur="4.64">california united states of america</text><text start="544.48" dur="2.64">on the back of the envelope was the</text><text start="546" dur="2.8">doodle</text><text start="547.12" dur="3.839">the kind of doodle one leaves on the</text><text start="548.8" dur="4">back of an envelope that happens to be</text><text start="550.959" dur="4.56">in front of one when one is caught on</text><text start="552.8" dur="4.88">the phone with a distressed relative</text><text start="555.519" dur="4.961">poking out above the fold was a crude</text><text start="557.68" dur="4.08">rendition of a sinister clown black-eyed</text><text start="560.48" dur="3.28">and gothy</text><text start="561.76" dur="3.92">dankly reminiscent of something that one</text><text start="563.76" dur="4.079">might find on the package of a poultry</text><text start="565.68" dur="3.68">quotation</text><text start="567.839" dur="3.521">this wasn&amp;#39;t the first time i&amp;#39;d received</text><text start="569.36" dur="3.68">an odd letter at work</text><text start="571.36" dur="3.919">my first year on the faculty i had</text><text start="573.04" dur="5.359">received an envelope postmarked san</text><text start="575.279" dur="5.12">diego which contained a a very short</text><text start="578.399" dur="3.921">essay offering a history of the japanese</text><text start="580.399" dur="2.801">navy&amp;#39;s conduct during the first world</text><text start="582.32" dur="1.6">war</text><text start="583.2" dur="2.96">b</text><text start="583.92" dur="4.4">glossy magazine-style photographs of</text><text start="586.16" dur="4.56">american military personnel stationed in</text><text start="588.32" dur="4.079">southeast asia with my faculty profile</text><text start="590.72" dur="4.559">picture cut out and stuck onto the</text><text start="592.399" dur="4.721">background and see the typescript of</text><text start="595.279" dur="4.56">what appeared to have been an old racist</text><text start="597.12" dur="4.8">ballad about japan</text><text start="599.839" dur="4.081">i had taken it to the campus cops i</text><text start="601.92" dur="4.4">wouldn&amp;#39;t do that now and they said</text><text start="603.92" dur="3.76">professor lavry i had some good news and</text><text start="606.32" dur="3.04">some bad news</text><text start="607.68" dur="3.839">the good news is that everyone gets one</text><text start="609.36" dur="4">of these the bad news is that this</text><text start="611.519" dur="4.481">jabroni does seem to have a few less</text><text start="613.36" dur="4.24">spices than the average cut of salami</text><text start="616" dur="3.36">because out photographs are a new</text><text start="617.6" dur="3.76">development</text><text start="619.36" dur="4.32">so anyway i opened the envelope and</text><text start="621.36" dur="4.479">inside was a note written in korea</text><text start="623.68" dur="4.56">unmarked and unsigned that read as</text><text start="625.839" dur="2.401">follows</text><text start="628.64" dur="2.8">so</text><text start="629.839" dur="3.761">i don&amp;#39;t want to sound like a nut ball</text><text start="631.44" dur="5.28">here but it&amp;#39;s time for a real true</text><text start="633.6" dur="5.359">confession i&amp;#39;m frightened of a clown</text><text start="636.72" dur="3.84">i&amp;#39;m wary of his eccentric manner and his</text><text start="638.959" dur="4.241">unusual appearance</text><text start="640.56" dur="5.04">his choices make me feel ill at ease and</text><text start="643.2" dur="3.759">the language he uses well i find it</text><text start="645.6" dur="3.84">unnerving</text><text start="646.959" dur="4.88">no this is not satire friend i really am</text><text start="649.44" dur="4.32">just plain bloody chilled by a clown and</text><text start="651.839" dur="4.161">if it&amp;#39;s all the same to you i&amp;#39;d rather</text><text start="653.76" dur="6.72">not see him when he comes to my town or</text><text start="656" dur="6.56">invites him to my house for any purpose</text><text start="660.48" dur="4.16">i know this sounds crackers what a</text><text start="662.56" dur="4.64">little insane clown man america&amp;#39;s</text><text start="664.64" dur="4.4">sweetheart you&amp;#39;re probably saying</text><text start="667.2" dur="3.52">and it&amp;#39;s true</text><text start="669.04" dur="3.2">suddenly it seems like the clowns are</text><text start="670.72" dur="4">everywhere doesn&amp;#39;t it</text><text start="672.24" dur="4.32">like the sakura blooms at festival</text><text start="674.72" dur="4.88">like tarragon in my uncle buster&amp;#39;s</text><text start="676.56" dur="5.279">imaginative twist on the mint julep</text><text start="679.6" dur="5.679">flowers swell fat with clowns and out</text><text start="681.839" dur="6.481">they burst young and masculine and juicy</text><text start="685.279" dur="5.12">one runs a digit over the pod and inside</text><text start="688.32" dur="4.24">it and finds the merry shards that</text><text start="690.399" dur="4.481">provide so many american children with</text><text start="692.56" dur="4.88">genteel delight</text><text start="694.88" dur="4.399">yet i am a feared of his taste in music</text><text start="697.44" dur="4.88">which i find perverse</text><text start="699.279" dur="5.441">and perhaps i find it worse than that i</text><text start="702.32" dur="4.88">demure from his sexual habits which he</text><text start="704.72" dur="4.72">insists on broadcasting i find his</text><text start="707.2" dur="4.319">pro-style off-putting and though i am</text><text start="709.44" dur="4.16">not among those who will hold him solely</text><text start="711.519" dur="3.841">responsible on this point nor will i</text><text start="713.6" dur="3.12">submit myself to further questioning on</text><text start="715.36" dur="3.12">the matter</text><text start="716.72" dur="4">i will confess that the little clown</text><text start="718.48" dur="4.4">fellow of whom i speak i find to be</text><text start="720.72" dur="4">quite thoroughly overrated on that front</text><text start="722.88" dur="3.68">and many more besides</text><text start="724.72" dur="4.799">i wonder at the judgment of those who</text><text start="726.56" dur="4.88">have supported his career so far</text><text start="729.519" dur="4.481">to me it is as though he has some kind</text><text start="731.44" dur="4.079">of malevolent hold over his benefactors</text><text start="734" dur="3.519">so of course i don&amp;#39;t wish my own</text><text start="735.519" dur="4.56">distaste to slip into outlandish and</text><text start="737.519" dur="6.081">paranoid stereotypes this particular</text><text start="740.079" dur="5.76">clown just isn&amp;#39;t for me that&amp;#39;s all</text><text start="743.6" dur="4.239">i see his face before me as i write and</text><text start="745.839" dur="4.321">to be perfectly candid i find it quite</text><text start="747.839" dur="4.481">unpleasant to contemplate</text><text start="750.16" dur="4.64">i understand that others may find his</text><text start="752.32" dur="4.4">red nose to indicate merriment but to me</text><text start="754.8" dur="4.24">it seems crash</text><text start="756.72" dur="4.48">many would find this clown smile which</text><text start="759.04" dur="4.56">stretches warmly between his ears to be</text><text start="761.2" dur="4.8">welcoming and playful but frankly i</text><text start="763.6" dur="4.72">think it verges on the sinister</text><text start="766" dur="4.32">his playful tusks of hair</text><text start="768.32" dur="4.48">which sprout at irregular intervals</text><text start="770.32" dur="4.319">across his face and neck not to my taste</text><text start="772.8" dur="4.4">at all i&amp;#39;m afraid</text><text start="774.639" dur="4">for example does he commit crimes this</text><text start="777.2" dur="3.6">little clown man</text><text start="778.639" dur="3.681">personally i wouldn&amp;#39;t have bear it</text><text start="780.8" dur="3.76">although now i ponder the matter more</text><text start="782.32" dur="4.079">carefully i wonder whether perhaps he&amp;#39;s</text><text start="784.56" dur="4.24">shotless from time to time</text><text start="786.399" dur="3.841">or texts while he&amp;#39;s driving</text><text start="788.8" dur="3.44">in most people i would consider these</text><text start="790.24" dur="3.76">small infractions to be charming</text><text start="792.24" dur="2.719">evidence of an appealing rebellious</text><text start="794" dur="3.04">streak</text><text start="794.959" dur="3.88">but in the little clown man i find them</text><text start="797.04" dur="4.239">petty fogging and</text><text start="798.839" dur="4.361">dishonest why should he flout rules that</text><text start="801.279" dur="4.24">the mess the rest of us are obliged to</text><text start="803.2" dur="3.6">follow which we mostly do to the best of</text><text start="805.519" dur="3.281">our abilities</text><text start="806.8" dur="4.32">i wonder even whether it isn&amp;#39;t further</text><text start="808.8" dur="4.479">evidence of that willful cast of mine</text><text start="811.12" dur="4.24">that underlies many of the qualities i</text><text start="813.279" dur="5.041">find least tolerable in him his</text><text start="815.36" dur="5.599">insistent being his presence his refusal</text><text start="818.32" dur="4.56">to disappear or die act as i would that</text><text start="820.959" dur="3.761">he would</text><text start="822.88" dur="4">it has taken me a while to realize that</text><text start="824.72" dur="4.4">i&amp;#39;m not made angry by him as i initially</text><text start="826.88" dur="4.72">thought i believed that i wish to</text><text start="829.12" dur="5.2">exterminate him by my own hand to show</text><text start="831.6" dur="4.72">him what it feels like and to say ha now</text><text start="834.32" dur="3.28">you know what it feels like when so that</text><text start="836.32" dur="3.519">he would know what it feels like when</text><text start="837.6" dur="4.16">someone says that to you not nice in</text><text start="839.839" dur="4.721">short</text><text start="841.76" dur="5.439">but no it&amp;#39;s not anger not at roots</text><text start="844.56" dur="5.44">at its base i am afraid of what makes a</text><text start="847.199" dur="4.961">little clown man tick of his quiddity</text><text start="850" start="995.68" dur="4.48">me come bound for whatever reason is a</text><text start="997.92" dur="3.839">common term of abuse among them but of</text><text start="1000.16" dur="3.52">course i couldn&amp;#39;t be sure that having</text><text start="1001.759" dur="3.601">done so my colleagues might not think</text><text start="1003.68" dur="3.76">either that i was inappropriately</text><text start="1005.36" dur="4.719">mocking someone afflicted apparently</text><text start="1007.44" dur="4.639">with a delusional psychosis or which was</text><text start="1010.079" dur="4.081">worse that the scrambled prose of my</text><text start="1012.079" dur="4">correspondent might in some way reflect</text><text start="1014.16" dur="3.919">badly on me and so it was my</text><text start="1016.079" dur="4.481">finding clowns creepy as is intrinsic to</text><text start="1049.28" dur="4.8">americanness as is finding kermit the</text><text start="1051.44" dur="5.52">frog charming and genuflecting before</text><text start="1054.08" dur="4.16">you sub before your suburban sangali mr</text><text start="1056.96" dur="2.959">rogers</text><text start="1058.24" dur="5.84">it&amp;#39;s because you all hate pleasure and</text><text start="1059.919" dur="4.161">are uncomfortable with with ambiguity</text><text start="1064.24" dur="3.04">you think clowns don&amp;#39;t know what you</text><text start="1065.679" dur="4.081">think about them that&amp;#39;s why they&amp;#39;re</text><text start="1067.28" dur="5.2">lasting they get it and you don&amp;#39;t</text><text start="1069.76" your brain</text><text start="1109.2" dur="4.32">feel bigger and it is an experience not</text><text start="1111.6" dur="5.52">to be missed and everyone has to go to</text><text start="1113.52" dur="3.6">that link now and buy</text><text start="1120.4" dur="3.84">the book and it&amp;#39;s gonna just gonna look</text><text start="1122" dur="5.52">it&amp;#39;s just gonna be awesome um so isn&amp;#39;t what i expect from a</text><text start="1150.559" dur="4.24">memoir so then i looked up memoir in the</text><text start="1152.88" dur="5.2">dictionary and then i found all this</text><text start="1154.799" dur="5.441">crazy stuff which is like it&amp;#39;s it&amp;#39;s also</text><text start="1158.08" dur="4.24">one of those books where like you</text><text start="1160.24" dur="3.36">after you you put it down it&amp;#39;s like like</text><text start="1162.32" dur="2.56">a really good movie like everything that</text><text start="1163.6" dur="2.64">you see just feels like it was invented</text><text start="1164.88" dur="2.72">by that person and put there as a joke</text><text start="1166.24" dur="3.2">for you so that&amp;#39;s how i felt about the</text><text start="1167.6" dur="3.28">entry for memoir because it said which</text><text start="1169.44" dur="3.04">i&amp;#39;m sure you know but i didn&amp;#39;t know this</text><text start="1170.88" dur="3.84">that oh they&amp;#39;re like oh it&amp;#39;s from the</text><text start="1172.48" dur="3.68">french memoir which is uh when it means</text><text start="1174.72" dur="3.199">memory it&amp;#39;s feminine but when it&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="1176.16" dur="3.759">book it&amp;#39;s masculine and because and they</text><text start="1177.919" dur="3.76">feel like the theory is that it was like</text><text start="1179.919" dur="3.521">memoir so you&amp;#39;re having like the writing</text><text start="1181.679" dur="5.641">is masculine so you know what the</text><text start="1183.44" dur="3.88"> is already in there</text><text start="1194.88" dur="2.799">your life and what you remember but it</text><text start="1196.64" dur="2.96">meant</text><text start="1197.679" dur="3.041">it meant a lot more things it could be a</text><text start="1199.6" dur="2.8">it&amp;#39;s based in the knowledge of the</text><text start="1200.72" dur="3.76">author but it could be about other</text><text start="1202.4" dur="4.56">things and then i was thinking in in</text><text start="1204.48" dur="4.48">some sense the memoir is</text><text start="1206.96" dur="4.719">the memory and there&amp;#39;s something about</text><text start="1208.96" dur="4.88">this book that is so filled with like</text><text start="1211.679" dur="4.081">um little trivia and</text><text start="1213.84" dur="4">it really feels like all the stuff that</text><text start="1215.76" dur="4.159">like more than any book i can think of</text><text start="1217.84" dur="3.52">it feels like a representation of the</text><text start="1219.919" dur="3.201">stuff that a person carries around in</text><text start="1221.36" dur="3.12">their head and like goes over all day so</text><text start="1223.12" dur="2.64">i was just wondering how you thought of</text><text start="1224.48" dur="4.4">the term memoir and do you think of your</text><text start="1225.76" dur="6.32">book and dialogue with other memoirs and</text><text start="1228.88" dur="5.279">um just memoir please</text><text start="1232.08" dur="3.839">thank you so much yeah it&amp;#39;s a it&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="1234.159" dur="3.201">beautiful question and</text><text start="1235.919" dur="3.441">you know as i</text><text start="1237.36" dur="3.6">talk a little bit about in the first</text><text start="1239.36" dur="3.28">chapter and</text><text start="1240.96" dur="2.959">you know i imagine many people are</text><text start="1242.64" dur="4.399">familiar with but there will be some</text><text start="1243.919" dur="4.961">people who won&amp;#39;t be the term memoirs</text><text start="1247.039" dur="3.361">controversial for for a number of</text><text start="1248.88" dur="3.84">contemporary readers but i think</text><text start="1250.4" dur="3.279">especially for contemporary transgender</text><text start="1252.72" dur="2">readers</text><text start="1253.679" dur="2.721">um</text><text start="1254.72" dur="4.079">you know i think a few years ago there</text><text start="1256.4" dur="3.519">was a</text><text start="1258.799" dur="4.88">kind of</text><text start="1259.919" dur="6.081">a concern that began to circulate</text><text start="1263.679" dur="5.281">around the possibility of on the one</text><text start="1266" dur="4.64">hand predatory online</text><text start="1268.96" dur="4.24">um</text><text start="1270.64" dur="4.56">publishers who were paying</text><text start="1273.2" dur="4">kids straight out of college 50 bucks to</text><text start="1275.2" dur="3.599">talk about their worst ever or</text><text start="1277.2" dur="2.24">whatever it was and there was this kind</text><text start="1278.799" dur="1.76">of</text><text start="1279.44" dur="5.599">um</text><text start="1280.559" dur="6.641">salacious and exploitative trade in um</text><text start="1285.039" dur="4.481">in memoirs that was causing a kind of</text><text start="1287.2" dur="4.8">moral panic among um among roughly</text><text start="1289.52" dur="3.44">people my age and demographic and</text><text start="1292" dur="2.799">um</text><text start="1292.96" dur="2.8">you know the trans version of that or</text><text start="1294.799" dur="2.24">the kind of</text><text start="1295.76" dur="3.6">the the spin</text><text start="1297.039" dur="7.12">among that in the trans community is</text><text start="1299.36" dur="6.88">that so much of transition and and trans</text><text start="1304.159" dur="4">being has to do with problems of</text><text start="1306.24" dur="4">legibility</text><text start="1308.159" dur="3.921">that there is something about</text><text start="1310.24" dur="3.439">uh simply</text><text start="1312.08" dur="3.68">saying who you are and what you have</text><text start="1313.679" dur="4.321">experienced</text><text start="1315.76" dur="5.76">that feels coerced under any</text><text start="1318" dur="6.32">circumstances so you know vivian namaste</text><text start="1321.52" dur="4.32">and jay prosser in the 1990s made this</text><text start="1324.32" dur="3.76">case fairly strongly in the kind of</text><text start="1325.84" dur="3.28">first generation of trans studies</text><text start="1328.08" dur="2.88">um</text><text start="1329.12" dur="3.52">and you know it didn&amp;#39;t it didn&amp;#39;t do</text><text start="1330.96" dur="3.76">anything to stop the</text><text start="1332.64" dur="4.72">the boom of trans memoirs over the last</text><text start="1334.72" dur="4.56">20 years and and nor should it but</text><text start="1337.36" dur="4.16">um but it has been a kind of consistent</text><text start="1339.28" dur="4.24">thing that people are worried about and</text><text start="1341.52" dur="5.519">some of the the writers the trans</text><text start="1343.52" dur="6.159">writers trans um you know uh activists</text><text start="1347.039" dur="4.401">community leaders uh you know people</text><text start="1349.679" dur="3.36">that i look to for guidance are actually</text><text start="1351.44" dur="2.88">fairly awesome fairly skeptical of</text><text start="1353.039" dur="2.801">memoir and i</text><text start="1354.32" dur="4.16">i kind of sympathize with that and the</text><text start="1355.84" dur="4">writers that i i&amp;#39;m i&amp;#39;m kind of really in</text><text start="1358.48" dur="2.64">conversation with in some way translates</text><text start="1359.84" dur="5.44">i&amp;#39;m really in conversation with people</text><text start="1361.12" dur="6.48">like you know morgan page um sybil lamb</text><text start="1365.28" dur="2.32">uh</text><text start="1368.48" dur="4.559">people like that these people who really</text><text start="1370.08" dur="4.32">have assured and complicated memoir so i</text><text start="1373.039" dur="3.361">knew that if i wanted to go back into</text><text start="1374.4" dur="3.68">memoir i needed a specific</text><text start="1376.4" dur="4.08">reason to do so</text><text start="1378.08" dur="4.56">and you know i think i have a couple of</text><text start="1380.48" dur="4.559">reasons to do so one of them is that i</text><text start="1382.64" dur="3.84">simply don&amp;#39;t think that it&amp;#39;s quite</text><text start="1385.039" dur="4.401">possible to</text><text start="1386.48" dur="4.079">expunge autobiography from any kind of</text><text start="1389.44" dur="5.04">critical</text><text start="1390.559" dur="6.161">um or or literary exposure and secondly</text><text start="1394.48" dur="4.16">that that&amp;#39;s dangerous too</text><text start="1396.72" dur="3.76">and it&amp;#39;s dangerous too you know</text><text start="1398.64" dur="4.24">but i totally agree i think that that&amp;#39;s</text><text start="1400.48" dur="5.04">where one it you know becomes this kind</text><text start="1402.88" dur="2.64">of uh</text><text start="1406" dur="6.48">anxious back covering kind of um</text><text start="1410.64" dur="3.519">one has a paranoid relationship to one&amp;#39;s</text><text start="1412.48" dur="3.04">own signification one&amp;#39;s own</text><text start="1414.159" dur="3.52">dissemination that it was really</text><text start="1415.52" dur="4">important to me not to</text><text start="1417.679" dur="3.201">lean into</text><text start="1419.52" dur="3.519">but the other thing for that was that</text><text start="1420.88" dur="5.12">you know if that&amp;#39;s true if one can&amp;#39;t uh</text><text start="1423.039" dur="5.12">expunge the memoiristic tendency from</text><text start="1426" dur="3.76">any other genre and certainly i mean</text><text start="1428.159" dur="3.601">like you know i write literary criticism</text><text start="1429.76" dur="3.36">for a living in my day job and i use the</text><text start="1431.76" dur="3.919">first person quite a lot and i talk</text><text start="1433.12" dur="5.439">about my own phenomenological encounters</text><text start="1435.679" dur="4.161">with texts and movies all the time</text><text start="1438.559" dur="3.441">um</text><text start="1439.84" dur="4.079">and you know but if that&amp;#39;s true then</text><text start="1442" dur="3.919">it&amp;#39;s true in the other direction too</text><text start="1443.919" dur="4.88">which is that one can in fact allow</text><text start="1445.919" dur="6.561">other genres into a process of composing</text><text start="1448.799" dur="5.76">a memoir and so that was why i often in</text><text start="1452.48" dur="3.92">the course of composing this book</text><text start="1454.559" dur="3.521">tried to think about</text><text start="1456.4" dur="3.04">texts that people wouldn&amp;#39;t generally</text><text start="1458.08" dur="3.76">think of as memoir but which in some</text><text start="1459.44" dur="4">ways struck me as as really disclosive</text><text start="1461.84" dur="5.04">or really um</text><text start="1463.44" dur="5.52">intimately in in um in conversation with</text><text start="1466.88" dur="4.72">the author&amp;#39;s um</text><text start="1468.96" dur="5.12">account of herself or himself</text><text start="1471.6" dur="4.559">so you know</text><text start="1474.08" dur="3.839">the books the book is as you if you&amp;#39;ve</text><text start="1476.159" dur="3.12">as you&amp;#39;ve said you know right you know</text><text start="1477.919" dur="2.961">people will like it or they won&amp;#39;t but</text><text start="1479.279" dur="3.601">it&amp;#39;s a book with a kind of fairly</text><text start="1480.88" dur="4.96">encyclopedic um</text><text start="1482.88" dur="5.279">energy sometimes it has this kind of</text><text start="1485.84" dur="3.12">rattling through citations and there are</text><text start="1488.159" dur="3.12">you know</text><text start="1488.96" dur="4.319">um there are a lot of parts that involve</text><text start="1491.279" dur="4.721">readings and references and fairly dense</text><text start="1493.279" dur="4.721">kind but one of the touchstones i think</text><text start="1496" dur="3.36">i think the two touchstones of this book</text><text start="1498" dur="2.48">um</text><text start="1499.36" dur="2.72">actually</text><text start="1500.48" dur="4">uh and i don&amp;#39;t know if i&amp;#39;ve really said</text><text start="1502.08" dur="5.28">this before but they&amp;#39;re both authors who</text><text start="1504.48" dur="5.84">um were both profoundly committed to</text><text start="1507.36" dur="5.199">memoir and also never wrote a memoir</text><text start="1510.32" dur="3.76">and they were also authors who</text><text start="1512.559" dur="3.12">were not alive at the same time but the</text><text start="1514.08" dur="3.28">later one was obsessed with the earlier</text><text start="1515.679" dur="4.801">one and the earlier one is charles</text><text start="1517.36" dur="5.28">dickens and the later one is fran kasker</text><text start="1520.48" dur="4.24">and these are two authors that</text><text start="1522.64" dur="4.399">um</text><text start="1524.72" dur="4.16">you know there&amp;#39;s something about</text><text start="1527.039" dur="3.601">the way in which these two authors think</text><text start="1528.88" dur="2.56">about style and perhaps especially think</text><text start="1530.64" dur="3.68">about</text><text start="1531.44" dur="3.839">wit as a verbal performance of</text><text start="1534.32" dur="3.44">um</text><text start="1535.279" dur="5.601">a comic charisma or something</text><text start="1537.76" dur="5.2">that is profoundly motivated by</text><text start="1540.88" dur="4.399">um intimate and even sort of</text><text start="1542.96" dur="4.88">uncontrollable disclosures of the cell</text><text start="1545.279" dur="3.76">so you know um</text><text start="1547.84" dur="2.959">d.a mill has written a lot about the</text><text start="1549.039" dur="4">autobiographical signature in for</text><text start="1550.799" dur="4.081">instance um you know david copperfield</text><text start="1553.039" dur="4.081">is the obvious one but but i think it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="1554.88" dur="3.84">all over the place and this this my</text><text start="1557.12" dur="5.28">memoir contains as you know it&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="1558.72" dur="6.4">fairly lengthy and unexpected reading of</text><text start="1562.4" dur="4.32">um the old curiosity shop</text><text start="1565.12" dur="3.28">i hope unexpected i don&amp;#39;t imagine there</text><text start="1566.72" dur="3.28">are too many people thinking that the</text><text start="1568.4" dur="4.24">final chapter is going to begin with a</text><text start="1570" dur="5.279">sort of 20-page account of like kind of</text><text start="1572.64" dur="5.2">narrative conceits of the curiosity</text><text start="1575.279" dur="4.241">shock but um and the casket stuff is</text><text start="1577.84" dur="4.24">everywhere and in that in that clown</text><text start="1579.52" dur="4.639">letter that i was just reading um you</text><text start="1582.08" dur="4.64">know i was really tuned in this time to</text><text start="1584.159" dur="4.561">thinking about um</text><text start="1586.72" dur="4.4">the</text><text start="1588.72" dur="4.319">the short stories in which kafka writes</text><text start="1591.12" dur="4.559">in the first person clearly isn&amp;#39;t</text><text start="1593.039" dur="3.76">talking about himself so for example</text><text start="1595.679" dur="2.801">um</text><text start="1596.799" dur="3.841">he has a story which you know it&amp;#39;s just</text><text start="1598.48" dur="5.199">one of the funniest and weirdest things</text><text start="1600.64" dur="5.6">that there is and i think um is is among</text><text start="1603.679" dur="4.641">the kind of central text for this book</text><text start="1606.24" dur="4">of mine which is called in german el</text><text start="1608.32" dur="3.359">cerna or um</text><text start="1610.24" dur="4.16">in uh</text><text start="1611.679" dur="5.12">in english 11 sons and it&amp;#39;s an 11</text><text start="1614.4" dur="5.04">paragraph story um each paragraph</text><text start="1616.799" dur="4.081">describes um each one of this person&amp;#39;s</text><text start="1619.44" dur="3.68">son first person to raise it i have 11</text><text start="1620.88" dur="3.6">sons my first son&amp;#39;s like this and each</text><text start="1623.12" dur="2.72">paragraph begins with what seems to be</text><text start="1624.48" dur="2.799">kind of vaguely</text><text start="1625.84" dur="2.64">affirmative statement of the time effect he&amp;#39;s having on people</text><text start="1637.039" dur="4.721">around him um he&amp;#39;s never going to</text><text start="1639.279" dur="3.52">come to anything but he&amp;#39;s you know</text><text start="1641.76" dur="2.72">um</text><text start="1642.799" dur="3.521">he&amp;#39;s not the worst person you can</text><text start="1644.48" dur="4.4">imagine i mean it&amp;#39;s like you know</text><text start="1646.32" dur="4.56">i don&amp;#39;t enjoy talking with him but uh</text><text start="1648.88" dur="3.44">and then so that&amp;#39;s the end of the phone</text><text start="1650.88" dur="4.32">my second son&amp;#39;s totally different my</text><text start="1652.32" dur="4.88">second said witty and precise and wise</text><text start="1655.2" dur="4">um and you know since since he was young</text><text start="1657.2" dur="3.839">he had this incredible facility to sort</text><text start="1659.2" dur="4.479">of really intuit what other people were</text><text start="1661.039" dur="4.64">experiencing and you know yeah</text><text start="1663.679" dur="4.161">sure like he&amp;#39;s kind of shy i guess you</text><text start="1665.679" dur="3.921">know he kind of like runs away something</text><text start="1667.84" dur="3.92">he doesn&amp;#39;t like you know he can&amp;#39;t he</text><text start="1669.6" dur="4.4">can&amp;#39;t like speak um technically or</text><text start="1671.76" dur="4.159">whatever but you know you sense you</text><text start="1674" dur="3.36">sense and so anyway my point is like is</text><text start="1675.919" dur="4.161">this guy just trying to convince himself</text><text start="1677.36" dur="4.319">constantly that uh he can defend each</text><text start="1680.08" dur="3.04">one of his sons and being unable to do</text><text start="1681.679" dur="2.801">it and i think that&amp;#39;s that&amp;#39;s what i kind</text><text start="1683.12" dur="3.439">of think of his memoir because of course</text><text start="1684.48" dur="3.6">what casper&amp;#39;s doing there</text><text start="1686.559" dur="3.12">is imagining</text><text start="1688.08" dur="3.199">the way in which his father might talk</text><text start="1689.679" dur="3.36">about him everything in kafka is about</text><text start="1691.279" dur="4.721">his relationship with his father&amp;#39;s</text><text start="1693.039" dur="4.64">relationship with him and um he&amp;#39;s sort</text><text start="1696" dur="3.52">of rehearsing various different</text><text start="1697.679" dur="3.201">possibilities so that&amp;#39;s the last thing</text><text start="1699.52" dur="2.96">i&amp;#39;ll say about memoir i realized like</text><text start="1700.88" dur="4.399">you know taking this question around the</text><text start="1702.48" dur="5.36">houses is that if one thinks through and</text><text start="1705.279" dur="4.971">with psychoanalysis which i always do</text><text start="1707.84" dur="4.24">and probably always will um</text><text start="1710.25" dur="2.95">[Music]</text><text start="1712.08" dur="3.28">you know one of the things that&amp;#39;s kind</text><text start="1713.2" dur="4.479">of amazing about language from the cycle</text><text start="1715.36" dur="4">analytics perspective is that um even</text><text start="1717.679" dur="3.441">the language that one puts out into the</text><text start="1719.36" dur="3.76">world that one emits one transmits in</text><text start="1721.12" dur="3.919">the analytics session or in the text or</text><text start="1723.12" dur="3.279">whatever has been given to one from</text><text start="1725.039" dur="3.921">somewhere else</text><text start="1726.399" dur="4">so in fact it&amp;#39;s possible to</text><text start="1728.96" dur="5.839">um</text><text start="1730.399" dur="6.961">play with addressee and uh and speaker</text><text start="1734.799" dur="3.921">um in the most complicated ways even</text><text start="1737.36" dur="3.52">when one is simply thinking about</text><text start="1738.72" dur="4.079">oneself once an experience so that the</text><text start="1740.88" dur="3.519">experience of memoir has at least as</text><text start="1742.799" dur="3.681">much on the one hand it has to do with</text><text start="1744.399" dur="4.88">like telling your experience but even</text><text start="1746.48" dur="5.36">more than that i think it has to do with</text><text start="1749.279" dur="4.64">um interpreting the signs that one is</text><text start="1751.84" dur="4.88">given in the world</text><text start="1753.919" dur="5.36">and again you know i meant i&amp;#39;m a scholar</text><text start="1756.72" dur="4.64">of literature and culture so i&amp;#39;m i&amp;#39;m i</text><text start="1759.279" dur="4">mean i interpret things and i think if</text><text start="1761.36" dur="3.52">the book is a memoir</text><text start="1763.279" dur="4.161">it&amp;#39;s lesser memoir because it tells the</text><text start="1764.88" dur="5.2">story of what happened to me</text><text start="1767.44" dur="4.64">um and it&amp;#39;s more it&amp;#39;s more memoir in the</text><text start="1770.08" dur="4.24">sense that it is a it&amp;#39;s a set of</text><text start="1772.08" dur="3.599">attempts to interpret things that are</text><text start="1774.32" dur="3.04">happening to me</text><text start="1775.679" dur="3.281">and um</text><text start="1777.36" dur="2.799">and so this is just sort of an example</text><text start="1778.96" dur="3.36">in this moment that i read it&amp;#39;s like i</text><text start="1780.159" dur="4.721">receive a letter it&amp;#39;s bizarre</text><text start="1782.32" dur="4.079">um obviously i actually wrote it but at</text><text start="1784.88" dur="3.039">the same time there&amp;#39;s this question in</text><text start="1786.399" dur="3.041">the text of like how do i take</text><text start="1787.919" dur="4.081">responsibility</text><text start="1789.44" dur="5.359">um for this tax that i&amp;#39;ve been given and</text><text start="1792" dur="4.159">that i have to now encounter anyway you</text><text start="1794.799" dur="2.561">know so many different possible answers</text><text start="1796.159" dur="3.601">to that question but there&amp;#39;s the other</text><text start="1797.36" dur="4.4">part okay last class last thing is that</text><text start="1799.76" dur="4.24">um</text><text start="1801.76" dur="4.32">for so long</text><text start="1804" dur="4.08">and and i haven&amp;#39;t answered this question</text><text start="1806.08" dur="3.599">yet you know i haven&amp;#39;t solved this</text><text start="1808.08" dur="2.88">problem to my own satisfaction but for</text><text start="1809.679" dur="2.961">so long</text><text start="1810.96" dur="3.04">part of the struggle of finding a</text><text start="1812.64" dur="3.84">transition and finding a way to</text><text start="1814" dur="6.159">transition has been about finding a</text><text start="1816.48" dur="3.679">a style to write in</text><text start="1820.84" dur="5.4">and part of the problem of transition</text><text start="1824.399" dur="3.76">was that there was a style i used to</text><text start="1826.24" dur="3.2">feel pretty comfortable in i used to</text><text start="1828.159" dur="2.64">love and i still love it and i&amp;#39;ve been</text><text start="1829.44" dur="4.08">teaching it this week</text><text start="1830.799" dur="5.6">um which is the style of like</text><text start="1833.52" dur="4.72">gay cultural criticism in that like d.a</text><text start="1836.399" dur="3.841">miller&amp;#39;s you know i i went to grad</text><text start="1838.24" dur="3.439">school because i wanted to be d.a miller</text><text start="1840.24" dur="3.84">um i</text><text start="1841.679" dur="3.201">uh i&amp;#39;ve always wanted to</text><text start="1844.08" dur="2.479">write</text><text start="1844.88" dur="3.2">like dear miller who wants to write like</text><text start="1846.559" dur="3.84">crawl and bath he wants to write like</text><text start="1848.08" dur="4.4">myself please um who wants to write like</text><text start="1850.399" dur="4.4">19th century like his understanding of</text><text start="1852.48" dur="3.679">what 19th century japanese would sound</text><text start="1854.799" dur="2.24">like in french</text><text start="1856.159" dur="3.441">um</text><text start="1857.039" dur="4">and that&amp;#39;s the kind of</text><text start="1859.6" dur="2.48">you know and it&amp;#39;s amazing and the answer</text><text start="1861.039" dur="2.721">is like you end up with something that&amp;#39;s</text><text start="1862.08" dur="4.24">like kajo shiguru and we&amp;#39;re both</text><text start="1863.76" dur="5.039">compared to literature phds</text><text start="1866.32" dur="3.52">but you know that essayistic tradition</text><text start="1868.799" dur="2.641">of</text><text start="1869.84" dur="3.6">like brilliant</text><text start="1871.44" dur="3.04">baroque gay</text><text start="1873.44" dur="2.719">um</text><text start="1874.48" dur="4.72">precision</text><text start="1876.159" dur="4.4">is both a a tradition in which</text><text start="1879.2" dur="3.199">and it&amp;#39;s a tradition in which this</text><text start="1880.559" dur="3.441">question of like what is disclosed and</text><text start="1882.399" dur="3.52">what&amp;#39;s withholding</text><text start="1884" dur="3.6">is really present you know if you read a</text><text start="1885.919" dur="3.76">text like</text><text start="1887.6" dur="3.28">uh d.a miller&amp;#39;s book bringing out roland</text><text start="1889.679" dur="2.72">buff</text><text start="1890.88" dur="2.72">it&amp;#39;s very much concerned with this</text><text start="1892.399" dur="4.241">question of like</text><text start="1893.6" dur="5.199">what is um</text><text start="1896.64" dur="3.84">what am i giving away when i when i when</text><text start="1898.799" dur="3.521">i write</text><text start="1900.48" dur="3.6">but at a certain point i i just realized</text><text start="1902.32" dur="4.16">like i can&amp;#39;t write in the style this</text><text start="1904.08" dur="3.839">isn&amp;#39;t my style this isn&amp;#39;t who i want to</text><text start="1906.48" dur="2.4">write like and i</text><text start="1907.919" dur="2.561">um</text><text start="1908.88" dur="2.88">and they think that</text><text start="1910.48" dur="2.48">memoir is</text><text start="1911.76" dur="2.96">you know</text><text start="1912.96" dur="3.12">let me put it this way i think if d.a</text><text start="1914.72" dur="2.72">miller had written the exact same book</text><text start="1916.08" dur="3.439">people wouldn&amp;#39;t be calling it memoir</text><text start="1917.44" dur="4.16">people would call it criticism</text><text start="1919.519" dur="5.52">or maybe they&amp;#39;d call it a kind of like</text><text start="1921.6" dur="4.4">um auto theory or something i don&amp;#39;t know</text><text start="1925.039" dur="3.041">um</text><text start="1926" dur="3.6">but the memoir is i think a kind of</text><text start="1928.08" dur="4.079">feminized</text><text start="1929.6" dur="5.04">response to</text><text start="1932.159" dur="4.321">the kind of spectacular</text><text start="1934.64" dur="3.68">of the closet in a tradition of 20th</text><text start="1936.48" dur="2.799">century gay male writing</text><text start="1938.32" dur="2.8">um</text><text start="1939.279" dur="3.28">and when i think about like who are the</text><text start="1941.12" dur="2.72">queer women</text><text start="1942.559" dur="3.281">writing in this kind of like</text><text start="1943.84" dur="3.92">post-partisan tradition</text><text start="1945.84" dur="4.4">that um</text><text start="1947.76" dur="4.08">you know it&amp;#39;s so valuable to me</text><text start="1950.24" dur="3.279">one of the one of the figures that&amp;#39;s</text><text start="1951.84" dur="3.36">just been so indispensable and continues</text><text start="1953.519" dur="3.841">to be as terry castle</text><text start="1955.2" dur="3.359">um and if you think about like the</text><text start="1957.36" dur="3.039">professor or the essays and the</text><text start="1958.559" dur="4.881">professor and especially</text><text start="1960.399" dur="6.321">kerry castle um</text><text start="1963.44" dur="4.64">essay on susan sun tag which remains my</text><text start="1966.72" dur="3.36">you know favorite piece of writing of</text><text start="1968.08" dur="3.52">the 21st century to date</text><text start="1970.08" dur="2.959">um</text><text start="1971.6" dur="3.679">you know that&amp;#39;s a text as well that has</text><text start="1973.039" dur="4.401">to do with like how do we think about</text><text start="1975.279" dur="3.441">the fact of a living</text><text start="1977.44" dur="2.719">body</text><text start="1978.72" dur="2.88">in relation to</text><text start="1980.159" dur="3.041">the</text><text start="1981.6" dur="3.199">phenomenal</text><text start="1983.2" dur="3.68">effects in</text><text start="1984.799" dur="4.401">divergations he used barbara johnson&amp;#39;s</text><text start="1986.88" dur="4.56">word by stefan melanie</text><text start="1989.2" dur="4.24">you know how do we how do we</text><text start="1991.44" dur="3.92">deal with the fact of a body as a</text><text start="1993.44" dur="4.64">different kind of phenomenon</text><text start="1995.36" dur="4.72">uh to the phenomenon of like this</text><text start="1998.08" dur="4.479">textual dissemination</text><text start="2000.08" dur="4.4">i&amp;#39;ve definitely stopped there</text><text start="2002.559" dur="3.12">oh thank you that&amp;#39;s so much</text><text start="2004.48" dur="4.64">um</text><text start="2005.679" dur="5.441">yeah i don&amp;#39;t think i never thought about</text><text start="2009.12" dur="3.12">i mean listening to you talk about it i</text><text start="2011.12" dur="2.96">i was</text><text start="2012.24" dur="3.36">i couldn&amp;#39;t see the relationship between</text><text start="2014.08" dur="3.52">pastiche and memoir and now that seems</text><text start="2015.6" dur="4.559">so it just seems like the clearest</text><text start="2017.6" dur="5.04">possible thing that of course and also</text><text start="2020.159" dur="4.64">so what you were saying about um</text><text start="2022.64" dur="3.44">dickens and kafka and because i was</text><text start="2024.799" dur="3.041">thinking like</text><text start="2026.08" dur="5.04">so one of the questions that i wanted to</text><text start="2027.84" dur="3.28">ask you was um</text><text start="2031.6" dur="4.4">you you kind of already answered but</text><text start="2033.84" dur="2.16">uh</text><text start="2036.96" dur="3.28">so reading this book i had this the</text><text start="2038.72" dur="3.12">feeling that i&amp;#39;m reading something that</text><text start="2040.24" dur="4">was unlike</text><text start="2041.84" dur="5.04">all other books but it was so</text><text start="2044.24" dur="4.96">funny and i was thinking is that it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="2046.88" dur="4.08">often a characteristic of books that are</text><text start="2049.2" dur="3.36">not like other books is that they&amp;#39;re not</text><text start="2050.96" dur="2.959">funny and i was wondering if that is</text><text start="2052.56" dur="2.4">related to</text><text start="2053.919" dur="3.281">humor</text><text start="2054.96" dur="4.08">is drawing on some kind of community and</text><text start="2057.2" dur="3.199">if you&amp;#39;re you know consciously trying to</text><text start="2059.04" dur="2.799">go outside of that it&amp;#39;s very hard to</text><text start="2060.399" dur="3.361">sort of bring the apparatus of humor</text><text start="2061.839" dur="3.681">with you but what you just said is the</text><text start="2063.76" dur="3.359">exact opposite and it made me realize</text><text start="2065.52" dur="3.68">that like the reason it feels like a</text><text start="2067.119" dur="3.76">book and it&amp;#39;s which everyone should buy</text><text start="2069.2" dur="3.52">uh is that</text><text start="2070.879" dur="4.321">the thing that you feel cushioned by and</text><text start="2072.72" dur="3.6">the lack of any of the apparatuses that</text><text start="2075.2" dur="3.36">you&amp;#39;re used to is the thing that you</text><text start="2076.32" dur="5.12">just said the wit the thing from the</text><text start="2078.56" dur="5.92">kafka and the and the dick is this humor</text><text start="2081.44" dur="5.52">that you feel cared for as a reader just</text><text start="2084.48" dur="4.399">there&amp;#39;s like always a delightful joke</text><text start="2086.96" dur="4.159">put there to delight you</text><text start="2088.879" dur="2.24">um</text><text start="2091.2" dur="2.479">i guess</text><text start="2095.28" dur="4.16">how do you do that how do you how do you</text><text start="2097.119" dur="4.561">create that um that feeling of</text><text start="2099.44" dur="4.48">unchartedness and that feeling of like</text><text start="2101.68" dur="3.52">we we all know what this joke in a very</text><text start="2103.92" dur="3.52">i mean i hadn&amp;#39;t actually thought of</text><text start="2105.2" dur="4.32">dickens but it does i mean he it does</text><text start="2107.44" dur="4.56">feel like a very kind of like inclusive</text><text start="2109.52" dur="5.2">dickensian kind of move</text><text start="2112" dur="5.119">yeah which feels like the</text><text start="2114.72" dur="4.24">dickens really is the encyclopedian um</text><text start="2117.119" dur="3.361">par excellent you know dickenson&amp;#39;s whole</text><text start="2118.96" dur="3.36">way of thinking about</text><text start="2120.48" dur="4.08">uh the world is to stuff as many</text><text start="2122.32" dur="3.92">different bits into</text><text start="2124.56" dur="3.2">a text as possible and then to start</text><text start="2126.24" dur="3.2">thinking about the connections between</text><text start="2127.76" dur="3.599">them and</text><text start="2129.44" dur="3.2">allows the connections to develop in odd</text><text start="2131.359" dur="2.561">ways and obviously you know there&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="2132.64" dur="2.88">lot to be said and if i was wearing a</text><text start="2133.92" dur="3.28">scholarly hat there would be a set of</text><text start="2135.52" dur="3.92">questions about like various different</text><text start="2137.2" dur="5.04">moments where dickens is exerting</text><text start="2139.44" dur="5.12">a strong form of control over the</text><text start="2142.24" dur="4.56">diversity of elements in his tags as we</text><text start="2144.56" dur="3.6">know you know like he did when he sat</text><text start="2146.8" dur="3.12">down to write</text><text start="2148.16" dur="3.52">zombie and son that was the first one</text><text start="2149.92" dur="4.32">that he he supposedly kind of really</text><text start="2151.68" dur="4.64">rigorously worked out but um</text><text start="2154.24" dur="4.8">you know at the same time even in those</text><text start="2156.32" dur="4.64">late dickens texts which are really so</text><text start="2159.04" dur="5.28">rigorously plotted</text><text start="2160.96" dur="4.8">there are still misflight birds you know</text><text start="2164.32" dur="2.72">and um</text><text start="2165.76" dur="3.359">when</text><text start="2167.04" dur="6">when we as readers encounter that list</text><text start="2169.119" dur="5.921">of misfit birds um something happens</text><text start="2173.04" dur="3.84">which is not rigorously controlled or</text><text start="2175.04" dur="2.799">controllable and you know andrew miller</text><text start="2176.88" dur="3.199">who&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="2177.839" dur="3.601">dickens scholar that i admire very much</text><text start="2180.079" dur="2.881">uh has this</text><text start="2181.44" dur="4.159">really wonderful</text><text start="2182.96" dur="4.56">uh line where he says that um</text><text start="2185.599" dur="3.681">the the the capacity of the dickensian</text><text start="2187.52" dur="3.04">the distinctively dimensional the thing</text><text start="2189.28" dur="2.799">to think of their measure of mckenzie</text><text start="2190.56" dur="3.6">and style is the capacity for</text><text start="2192.079" dur="3.121">self-surprise</text><text start="2194.16" dur="2.4">um</text><text start="2195.2" dur="3.12">that you know there are moments in</text><text start="2196.56" dur="2.88">distance and i think this slice birds is</text><text start="2198.32" dur="3.519">one of them i think there are moments</text><text start="2199.44" dur="4.56">with skimpole as well and the same novel</text><text start="2201.839" dur="3.921">um that are like this where</text><text start="2204" dur="3.76">um</text><text start="2205.76" dur="3.359">you know you catch him really surprising</text><text start="2207.76" dur="4.079">himself with what&amp;#39;s happening and</text><text start="2209.119" dur="5.521">there&amp;#39;s a kind of unexpected delight</text><text start="2211.839" dur="3.841">so um but but</text><text start="2214.64" dur="3.52">you know</text><text start="2215.68" dur="4.08">the answer to this question in a kind of</text><text start="2218.16" dur="2.88">again literally historical term would be</text><text start="2219.76" dur="2.319">like the reason why this is possible and</text><text start="2221.04" dur="3.039">the reason why the dickensian</text><text start="2222.079" dur="3.52">charismatic voice is able to sustain</text><text start="2224.079" dur="4">this kind of difference</text><text start="2225.599" dur="4.881">is um you know you do the police in</text><text start="2228.079" dur="5.04">different voices or um you know because</text><text start="2230.48" dur="4.48">it&amp;#39;s a performance because uh</text><text start="2233.119" dur="3.601">it is a uh</text><text start="2234.96" dur="2.72">a virtuosic</text><text start="2236.72" dur="4.56">um</text><text start="2237.68" dur="5.52">theatrical uh experience is what the the</text><text start="2241.28" dur="3.68">the the scholar david koenig has written</text><text start="2243.2" dur="3.52">a great deal about that dickens like</text><text start="2244.96" dur="4">many 19th century novelists wanted to</text><text start="2246.72" dur="5.119">have been a playwright and in fact you</text><text start="2248.96" dur="4.72">know made a great deal of money and and</text><text start="2251.839" dur="4.081">spent a great deal of time touring</text><text start="2253.68" dur="3.679">around the country reading his novels</text><text start="2255.92" dur="3.36">and doing the different voices of the</text><text start="2257.359" dur="3.841">different characters and and that&amp;#39;s</text><text start="2259.28" dur="4.48">the sort of charismatic</text><text start="2261.2" dur="4.32">centripetal energy that he produces and</text><text start="2263.76" dur="3.76">it&amp;#39;s not true in kafka like dude so it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="2265.52" dur="3.04">sort of opposite of kafka but</text><text start="2267.52" dur="3.12">um</text><text start="2268.56" dur="3.6">but the part that is similar i think or</text><text start="2270.64" dur="2.479">the part where i would want to draw a</text><text start="2272.16" dur="3.04">through line</text><text start="2273.119" dur="3.601">is through this you know</text><text start="2275.2" dur="3.2">i realize i&amp;#39;m sounding so much more like</text><text start="2276.72" dur="2.8">an english professor than i wanted to i</text><text start="2278.4" dur="2.56">just want to say</text><text start="2279.52" dur="2.8">you know the book has a lot of dick</text><text start="2280.96" dur="4">jokes so if you&amp;#39;re reading this</text><text start="2282.32" dur="2.64">like i just don&amp;#39;t</text><text start="2289.119" dur="4.161">i mean literally there is a list of like</text><text start="2290.88" dur="4.959">pornographic um</text><text start="2293.28" dur="4.72">titles for all of the dickens uh novels</text><text start="2295.839" dur="4.481">hard slimes being the one i&amp;#39;m proudest</text><text start="2298" dur="3.68">of but um</text><text start="2300.32" dur="2.96">but uh</text><text start="2301.68" dur="4.399">anyway you know so but the the thing</text><text start="2303.28" dur="5.12">that is similar is this genre of comic</text><text start="2306.079" dur="4.161">writing was broadly comic racing that</text><text start="2308.4" dur="5.6">northrop frye talks about in the anatomy</text><text start="2310.24" dur="6.64">of criticism which he called um</text><text start="2314" dur="4.48">which he calls the manipian satire um</text><text start="2316.88" dur="3.84">and you know i don&amp;#39;t know enough about</text><text start="2318.48" dur="3.92">manipus or manipheus to tell you how</text><text start="2320.72" dur="4">accurate the</text><text start="2322.4" dur="4.16">designation is but um</text><text start="2324.72" dur="4.8">but what what he specifically has in</text><text start="2326.56" dur="5.92">mind is a classical genre that exists</text><text start="2329.52" dur="4.16">through the 18th 19th 20th 20th 21st</text><text start="2332.48" dur="2.96">century obviously he&amp;#39;s writing in the</text><text start="2333.68" dur="3.2">50s so he&amp;#39;s not talking about the 21st</text><text start="2335.44" dur="3.44">century but it continues to exist and i</text><text start="2336.88" dur="4.32">think this book is one in some ways um</text><text start="2344.72" dur="2.96">um</text><text start="2345.76" dur="3.76">so you know some of the examples would</text><text start="2347.68" dur="4.64">include robert burton&amp;#39;s the anatomy of</text><text start="2349.52" dur="5.839">melancholy which is a big big fat book</text><text start="2352.32" dur="5.519">um that is a sort of</text><text start="2355.359" dur="5.201">early modern treatise on melancholy that</text><text start="2357.839" dur="4.801">is also this kind of deeply melancholic</text><text start="2360.56" dur="5.279">and paranoid text in itself that refuses</text><text start="2362.64" dur="5.199">to articulate any straightforward claims</text><text start="2365.839" dur="3.441">um and you know uh northrop pride also</text><text start="2367.839" dur="3.201">argues about the essay form in the</text><text start="2369.28" dur="3.36">montana setting it&amp;#39;s kind of a</text><text start="2371.04" dur="3.36">manipulative satire in the traditional</text><text start="2372.64" dur="4.32">sense in the modern setting in the 18th</text><text start="2374.4" dur="4.32">century we have um twist from shandy by</text><text start="2376.96" dur="4.56">lawrence stern which is everyone knows</text><text start="2378.72" dur="5.119">it&amp;#39;s a totally bizarre book that has</text><text start="2381.52" dur="4.72">more um</text><text start="2383.839" dur="4.641">more digression than text</text><text start="2386.24" dur="3.839">um and because it has more digression</text><text start="2388.48" dur="4.879">than text then it raises the question of</text><text start="2390.079" dur="4.961">what a digression actually is um</text><text start="2393.359" dur="3.201">and uh</text><text start="2395.04" dur="2.96">you know then another one that&amp;#39;s</text><text start="2396.56" dur="2.88">important to me is thomas carlyle</text><text start="2398" dur="3.28">sartorius</text><text start="2399.44" dur="3.919">and but i think in any case this way of</text><text start="2401.28" dur="4.4">like joking about</text><text start="2403.359" dur="4.561">the philosopher&amp;#39;s claim to know</text><text start="2405.68" dur="3.84">everything becomes part of the</text><text start="2407.92" dur="3.04">dickensian way of thinking about the</text><text start="2409.52" dur="3.52">world in general in the way of thinking</text><text start="2410.96" dur="3.92">about the comic in general so you know</text><text start="2413.04" dur="3.76">it often it often seems like slightly</text><text start="2414.88" dur="4.4">tourist and even slightly conservative</text><text start="2416.8" dur="4.319">in dickens which has this sort of um</text><text start="2419.28" dur="5.6">you know</text><text start="2421.119" dur="6.48">a kind of skepticism about uh</text><text start="2424.88" dur="5.12">about world making that you know is</text><text start="2427.599" dur="4.161">clearly in his case motivated by the one</text><text start="2430" dur="2.48">thing that isn&amp;#39;t funny in dickens which</text><text start="2431.76" dur="4.079">is</text><text start="2432.48" dur="5.28">his absolute loathing of black people um</text><text start="2435.839" dur="4.321">is</text><text start="2437.76" dur="4.8">vicious inability to imagine a world in</text><text start="2440.16" dur="5.52">which uh there is black freedom or black</text><text start="2442.56" dur="4.88">pleasure um i mean it and it it&amp;#39;s you</text><text start="2445.68" dur="3.439">know in in bleak house in fact the mrs</text><text start="2447.44" dur="3.919">jellybean stuff it&amp;#39;s really really</text><text start="2449.119" dur="5.361">intense um and it&amp;#39;s a moment where this</text><text start="2451.359" dur="5.521">kind of satirical treatment of the</text><text start="2454.48" dur="6">liberal do-gooder actually becomes</text><text start="2456.88" dur="3.6">indistinguishable from kind of like</text><text start="2460.56" dur="4.64">as it was for carlisle absolutely kind</text><text start="2462.56" dur="4.64">of intense intense racism</text><text start="2465.2" dur="4">um but</text><text start="2467.2" dur="3.919">uh it&amp;#39;s not merely this kind of like</text><text start="2469.2" dur="3.2">conservative or reactionary dimension</text><text start="2471.119" dur="2.881">and i think it actually becomes this</text><text start="2472.4" dur="3.919">other way of holding</text><text start="2474" dur="4.079">um</text><text start="2476.319" dur="4">holding something</text><text start="2478.079" dur="4.401">about world making something about</text><text start="2480.319" dur="3.601">totalitarianism at bay and that&amp;#39;s what</text><text start="2482.48" dur="2.8">happens in kafka</text><text start="2483.92" dur="3.28">um where</text><text start="2485.28" dur="3.039">you know every whenever anyone reads</text><text start="2487.2" dur="2.399">kafka for the first time they&amp;#39;re always</text><text start="2488.319" dur="2.161">like oh my god it&amp;#39;s so pressing and when</text><text start="2489.599" dur="2.161">you&amp;#39;re really catholic for the second</text><text start="2490.48" dur="3.28">time your response is always like oh my</text><text start="2491.76" dur="4.079">god it&amp;#39;s so funny um and those things</text><text start="2493.76" dur="3.2">are kind of both true</text><text start="2495.839" dur="2.401">and</text><text start="2496.96" dur="2.72">it&amp;#39;s that</text><text start="2498.24" dur="3.68">flipping between those two things that</text><text start="2499.68" dur="3.84">you think comes from the manipulation</text><text start="2501.92" dur="2.96">dimension that kafka is picking up from</text><text start="2503.52" dur="2.799">dickens and just like you know he says</text><text start="2504.88" dur="2.8">their thing because i don&amp;#39;t say it in</text><text start="2506.319" dur="2.721">the book because casket doesn&amp;#39;t even get</text><text start="2507.68" dur="3.919">mentioned by name in the book but it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="2509.04" dur="4.48">like if you know kafka you will i think</text><text start="2511.599" dur="2.881">find a lot to recognize in the book</text><text start="2513.52" dur="3.12">um</text><text start="2514.48" dur="2.16">but</text><text start="2517.359" dur="4.161">you know we we know from kafka&amp;#39;s diaries</text><text start="2519.44" dur="5.04">that he read dickens consistently and</text><text start="2521.52" dur="5.04">and was kind of worried that</text><text start="2524.48" dur="4.24">um dickens had already said everything</text><text start="2526.56" dur="4.4">that he wanted to say which is bizarre</text><text start="2528.72" dur="3.28">because no one reads tasker and thinks</text><text start="2530.96" dur="5.72">you know this is the kind of like</text><text start="2532" dur="4.68">capacious jawlity of like this is</text><text start="2537.839" dur="3.52">yeah no i mean it&amp;#39;s so weird but of</text><text start="2539.52" dur="3.2">course like you know</text><text start="2541.359" dur="3.76">on the one hand it has something to do</text><text start="2542.72" dur="4.639">with the position of the law and the</text><text start="2545.119" dur="3.2">um the way in which</text><text start="2547.359" dur="2.801">yeah</text><text start="2548.319" dur="3.601">the way that dickens thinks about law</text><text start="2550.16" dur="4.56">but it actually also has something to do</text><text start="2551.92" dur="4.96">with i think the way in which dickens um</text><text start="2554.72" dur="4.08">treats knowledge and the the idea of the</text><text start="2556.88" dur="3.6">knowable and the ways in which we build</text><text start="2558.8" dur="3.36">the social through these kinds of like</text><text start="2560.48" dur="4.48">comic networks</text><text start="2562.16" dur="4.64">this really i i was i didn&amp;#39;t notice this</text><text start="2564.96" dur="4.8">the first time but your copyright your</text><text start="2566.8" dur="4.72">note on the copyright page oh also um we</text><text start="2569.76" dur="3.28">already have one question which is very</text><text start="2571.52" dur="3.04">related to what we&amp;#39;ve been talking about</text><text start="2573.04" dur="3.36">and that&amp;#39;s going to be fantastic and</text><text start="2574.56" dur="5.2">people should be preparing their other</text><text start="2576.4" dur="4.64">questions but yeah um i just have one</text><text start="2579.76" dur="3.28">question</text><text start="2581.04" dur="3.76">which is um yeah how did you get to</text><text start="2583.04" dur="3.039">write the like how did you think of what</text><text start="2584.8" dur="3.6">did they want you to write could you</text><text start="2586.079" dur="3.921">read that does it exist yeah totally</text><text start="2588.4" dur="4">yeah so i have like this kind of</text><text start="2590" dur="4.48">slightly pretentious um</text><text start="2592.4" dur="3.52">note on the copyright page right which</text><text start="2594.48" dur="3.52">is just like here</text><text start="2595.92" dur="4.399">where i&amp;#39;ve written um</text><text start="2598" dur="4.72">in on truth and lies in an extra moral</text><text start="2600.319" dur="3.681">sense nature defines truth as a sum of</text><text start="2602.72" dur="3.84">human relations which have been</text><text start="2604" dur="5.359">poetically and rhetorically intensified</text><text start="2606.56" dur="4.4">transferred and embellished accordingly</text><text start="2609.359" dur="3.121">readers should not expect any active</text><text start="2610.96" dur="4.08">writing</text><text start="2612.48" dur="4.879">to depict the non-fictional world</text><text start="2615.04" dur="3.76">with anything like unmediated accuracy</text><text start="2617.359" dur="3.041">and certainly not one authored by</text><text start="2618.8" dur="3.6">someone pretentious enough to remind</text><text start="2620.4" dur="3.439">them of the facts on the copyright page</text><text start="2622.4" dur="3.84">what they mean is certain names and</text><text start="2623.839" dur="3.52">identifying details have been changed</text><text start="2626.24" dur="2.32">um</text><text start="2627.359" dur="2.96">so</text><text start="2628.56" dur="2.72">you know i have to say the idea for this</text><text start="2630.319" dur="1.681">was</text><text start="2631.28" dur="2.4">my</text><text start="2632" dur="3.119">came from my wonderful wonderful</text><text start="2633.68" dur="4.399">wonderful editor</text><text start="2635.119" dur="5.521">at uh at seal claire potter</text><text start="2638.079" dur="4.641">um and claire just said you know we need</text><text start="2640.64" dur="4.88">to write something about</text><text start="2642.72" dur="4.32">the relationship between um</text><text start="2645.52" dur="2.799">the text and</text><text start="2647.04" dur="3.12">you know we need to write something</text><text start="2648.319" dur="2.721">legally indemnifying</text><text start="2650.16" dur="2.56">for the</text><text start="2651.04" dur="3.44">for the for the for the book because you</text><text start="2652.72" dur="4">know everyone has to do this and</text><text start="2654.48" dur="4.24">you know as you can probably imagine</text><text start="2656.72" dur="3.84">having read it there were some</text><text start="2658.72" dur="4.56">fairly tricky legal questions that were</text><text start="2660.56" dur="4.96">raised around like you know for example</text><text start="2663.28" dur="4.48">imputing um</text><text start="2665.52" dur="3.44">describing a story in which like my</text><text start="2667.76" dur="3.04">uncle</text><text start="2668.96" dur="3.44">beat up my mother in front of me and</text><text start="2670.8" dur="3.6">that was that&amp;#39;s a story that i tell</text><text start="2672.4" dur="3.28">pretty directly and like you know we</text><text start="2674.4" dur="3.199">need to talk to lawyers about that but</text><text start="2675.68" dur="4">there&amp;#39;s also like you know a set of</text><text start="2677.599" dur="3.601">really cruel jokes about conrad black</text><text start="2679.68" dur="2.96">and robert webb</text><text start="2681.2" dur="3.04">and the lawyers were kind of nervous</text><text start="2682.64" dur="2.959">about that and like the kind of</text><text start="2684.24" dur="3.52">different intellectual property stuff</text><text start="2685.599" dur="4.401">with the past issues that are coming up</text><text start="2687.76" dur="3.92">so you know it was like just we just</text><text start="2690" dur="3.76">need something simple but claire&amp;#39;s idea</text><text start="2691.68" dur="3.36">was that i could write something that</text><text start="2693.76" dur="3.52">might actually</text><text start="2695.04" dur="5.039">say something worth saying</text><text start="2697.28" dur="4.4">about uh the connection between</text><text start="2700.079" dur="3.121">the book and the world that it was</text><text start="2701.68" dur="2.96">describing and i don&amp;#39;t know i didn&amp;#39;t</text><text start="2703.2" dur="3.2">want to write an essay and i didn&amp;#39;t want</text><text start="2704.64" dur="3.76">to write anything that was going to be</text><text start="2706.4" dur="4.56">so awfully pretentious as to totally</text><text start="2708.4" dur="4.719">scotch the um you know ideally people</text><text start="2710.96" dur="3.76">would i want people to buy the book so</text><text start="2713.119" dur="3.521">you know a little reference to the</text><text start="2714.72" dur="4.24">famous nietzsche essay nietzsche as well</text><text start="2716.64" dur="4.16">i think is a great thinker of the um</text><text start="2718.96" dur="4.24">femininity and satire especially the</text><text start="2720.8" dur="4.319">late uh the late nature it&amp;#39;s very much</text><text start="2723.2" dur="3.44">about like i&amp;#39;m not really interested in</text><text start="2725.119" dur="3.281">saying anything but what i&amp;#39;m interested</text><text start="2726.64" dur="3.12">in is having fun with the impossibility</text><text start="2728.4" dur="2.8">of saying</text><text start="2729.76" dur="3.92">um</text><text start="2731.2" dur="4.159">and you know i think it&amp;#39;s no surprise</text><text start="2733.68" dur="4.399">that nietzsche actually himself was like</text><text start="2735.359" dur="6">weirdly interested in thomas carlyle</text><text start="2738.079" dur="4.961">um as was jill deluz strangely enough</text><text start="2741.359" dur="3.121">and delirious is like again a figure</text><text start="2743.04" dur="2.64">like maybe a kind of manipulation</text><text start="2744.48" dur="2.48">saturated</text><text start="2745.68" dur="4.88">so you know i think that&amp;#39;s what i&amp;#39;m</text><text start="2746.96" dur="5.119">doing there just trying to say like um</text><text start="2750.56" dur="3.519">this is a book that really actually</text><text start="2752.079" dur="3.04">wants to play with the law</text><text start="2754.079" dur="3.76">um</text><text start="2755.119" dur="4.24">and i guess uh i love that</text><text start="2757.839" dur="3.201">you know it&amp;#39;s a book that wants to play</text><text start="2759.359" dur="4.321">blue in a few different ways one with</text><text start="2761.04" dur="4.079">copyright right so like for example</text><text start="2763.68" dur="2.96">you know</text><text start="2765.119" dur="2.72">there&amp;#39;s this one sequence towards the</text><text start="2766.64" dur="2.24">end and i&amp;#39;m going to see if i can find</text><text start="2767.839" dur="4.721">it just so i can show you what it looks</text><text start="2768.88" dur="6.479">like on the page where i am um</text><text start="2772.56" dur="4.64">quoting a buddy holly lyric</text><text start="2775.359" dur="3.921">and we simply could not get the</text><text start="2777.2" dur="4.159">permission for the buddy holly lyric so</text><text start="2779.28" dur="5.28">my suggestion was that we</text><text start="2781.359" dur="5.041">black out every word except for a couple</text><text start="2784.56" dur="2.799">to make a little statement so it now</text><text start="2786.4" dur="4">says</text><text start="2787.359" dur="5.281">why you care psy</text><text start="2790.4" dur="3.76">um and then there&amp;#39;s another moment which</text><text start="2792.64" dur="4.16">is like over the over the way there&amp;#39;s</text><text start="2794.16" dur="3.84">like a pastiche of hamilton</text><text start="2796.8" dur="3.76">um</text><text start="2798" dur="4.24">and you know it was like the pastiche of</text><text start="2800.56" dur="3.84">hamilton so i mean i can read it out</text><text start="2802.24" dur="3.359">it&amp;#39;s like moved in with this cousin but</text><text start="2804.4" dur="2.959">the thing is i&amp;#39;m what i&amp;#39;m saying is i&amp;#39;m</text><text start="2805.599" dur="3.041">going to read this out now but when i</text><text start="2807.359" dur="3.201">when i did the audio book i wasn&amp;#39;t</text><text start="2808.64" dur="2.959">allowed to sing it because although the</text><text start="2810.56" dur="3.84">words</text><text start="2811.599" dur="5.201">were parody if i sang it to the tune</text><text start="2814.4" dur="4.56">then it wouldn&amp;#39;t town and they would be</text><text start="2816.8" dur="3.84">in violation of the laws like because</text><text start="2818.96" dur="4.32">moved him with his cousin his cousin</text><text start="2820.64" dur="4.8">committed suicide a suicidal cousin was</text><text start="2823.28" dur="3.76">a wound to the family pride a friend of</text><text start="2825.44" dur="3.04">his cousin said you gotta mind your</text><text start="2827.04" dur="3.92">health alex you&amp;#39;ve been treated so the</text><text start="2828.48" dur="3.44">urban said</text><text start="2830.96" dur="2.72">um</text><text start="2831.92" dur="4.32">and i can like i can do it in this</text><text start="2833.68" dur="4.639">setting because you know we&amp;#39;re not</text><text start="2836.24" dur="3.68">this isn&amp;#39;t uh the same kind of thing i</text><text start="2838.319" dur="3.601">hope i can maybe someone&amp;#39;s gonna like</text><text start="2839.92" dur="3.52">maybe lin-manuel miranda is about to</text><text start="2841.92" dur="4.159">batten down the door and tell me that</text><text start="2843.44" dur="4.639">you know i i owe him money but i i&amp;#39;d be</text><text start="2846.079" dur="3.921">surprised um</text><text start="2848.079" dur="3.441">anyway my point being that this is the</text><text start="2850" dur="3.04">book that wants to with the law and</text><text start="2851.52" dur="3.76">and it wants to with libel and it</text><text start="2853.04" dur="5.36">wants to with um intellectual</text><text start="2855.28" dur="5.12">property and he wants to with um</text><text start="2858.4" dur="3.679">you know various different</text><text start="2860.4" dur="3.52">questions in which you know a book</text><text start="2862.079" dur="3.601">situation with which a book situates</text><text start="2863.92" dur="3.36">itself in relation to the law and you</text><text start="2865.68" dur="2.639">know this actually gets me a beautiful</text><text start="2867.28" dur="2.64">place to end because it gets me right</text><text start="2868.319" dur="2.8">back to that question at the start about</text><text start="2869.92" dur="2.96">like</text><text start="2871.119" dur="4">are the genres</text><text start="2872.88" dur="4.239">outside of this kind of like baroque gay</text><text start="2875.119" dur="5.281">male critical tradition in which a trans</text><text start="2877.119" dur="4.72">woman can begin to write herself</text><text start="2880.4" dur="3.04">um</text><text start="2881.839" dur="3.201">and you know i mentioned terry castle</text><text start="2883.44" dur="3.28">but the other big one and the person who</text><text start="2885.04" dur="3.44"> with the law better than any other</text><text start="2886.72" dur="2.72">writer that i can think of is janet</text><text start="2888.48" dur="3.2">malcolm</text><text start="2889.44" dur="4">um your ears while colleague</text><text start="2891.68" dur="3.6">and um</text><text start="2893.44" dur="3.36">you know when janet malcolm writes about</text><text start="2895.28" dur="3.279">the law especially in relation to</text><text start="2896.8" dur="3.6">psychoanalysis</text><text start="2898.559" dur="5.681">you know she makes it feel</text><text start="2900.4" dur="6.56">so vital and so fun and so sexy and you</text><text start="2904.24" dur="4.48">know the idea of going to war against</text><text start="2906.96" dur="4.08">one and going to the law against someone</text><text start="2908.72" dur="4.32">is kind of incredible um</text><text start="2911.04" dur="4.4">incredibly dynamic thing so anyway you</text><text start="2913.04" dur="3.519">know as you know ellis i&amp;#39;ve suffered for</text><text start="2915.44" dur="2.8">that yeah</text><text start="2916.559" dur="4">sorry yeah no she did i mean absolutely</text><text start="2918.24" dur="4.079">she did yeah no and i mean</text><text start="2920.559" dur="3.441">i really hope conrad black doesn&amp;#39;t shoot</text><text start="2922.319" dur="3.841">to me but it&amp;#39;s something that i really</text><text start="2924" dur="4.079">admire about her work in in you know</text><text start="2926.16" dur="4.64">it&amp;#39;s it&amp;#39;s kind of eros in its relation</text><text start="2928.079" dur="4.321">to the writing subject as a</text><text start="2930.8" dur="2.96">as a body and the writing subject as a</text><text start="2932.4" dur="3.199">legal person is something that she</text><text start="2933.76" dur="3.44">really helps me think about but</text><text start="2935.599" dur="3.121">um you know as you know i&amp;#39;ve already</text><text start="2937.2" dur="2.8">written this um</text><text start="2938.72" dur="2.399">novel which is kind of a follow-up to</text><text start="2940" dur="2.8">please miss but the next thing i&amp;#39;m going</text><text start="2941.119" dur="3.841">to write the next kind of creative thing</text><text start="2942.8" dur="5.12">next crazy project i&amp;#39;m engaged in</text><text start="2944.96" dur="4.8">is um a legal rom-com</text><text start="2947.92" dur="4.32">and uh</text><text start="2949.76" dur="4.079">trying trying to write about</text><text start="2952.24" dur="4.48">lawyers falling in love and it&amp;#39;s also a</text><text start="2953.839" dur="6.161">serial killer narrative but you know um</text><text start="2956.72" dur="4.72">but a legal rom-com because you know</text><text start="2960" dur="3.04">yeah exactly i think i mean it&amp;#39;s gonna</text><text start="2961.44" dur="4.879">be like ali mcbeal meets like the</text><text start="2963.04" dur="6.64">buffalo bill plot in um</text><text start="2966.319" dur="6.161">in silence of the lambs is the idea</text><text start="2969.68" dur="5.04">it&amp;#39;s good it sounds itself um okay so</text><text start="2972.48" dur="4.4">let&amp;#39;s i&amp;#39;m gonna uh so related to the</text><text start="2974.72" dur="4">thing that to what you were just saying</text><text start="2976.88" dur="4.719">is this reader first reader question</text><text start="2978.72" dur="5.359">from katie clapp uh could you speak to</text><text start="2981.599" dur="4.081">why you chose</text><text start="2984.079" dur="2.881">just to include fiction in your book and</text><text start="2985.68" dur="2.8">how is the reader we&amp;#39;re supposed to</text><text start="2986.96" dur="3.359">accommodate the blend as someone who</text><text start="2988.48" dur="3.2">values truth and honesty i find myself</text><text start="2990.319" dur="3.121">not trusting anything if something in</text><text start="2991.68" dur="3.28">there could be false</text><text start="2993.44" dur="2.399">yeah do you want to with the law</text><text start="2994.96" dur="2.24">but you don&amp;#39;t want to with the</text><text start="2995.839" dur="2.641">reader</text><text start="2997.2" dur="3.119">yeah i definitely that&amp;#39;s definitely</text><text start="2998.48" dur="3.92">right i don&amp;#39;t want you to not trust me</text><text start="3000.319" dur="4.081">um and i definitely think that the book</text><text start="3002.4" dur="4.64">is an attempt to</text><text start="3004.4" dur="5.28">earn your trust um and</text><text start="3007.04" dur="4.079">it it it is an attempt to make myself</text><text start="3009.68" dur="2.879">worthy of that trust in a few different</text><text start="3011.119" dur="4">ways um</text><text start="3012.559" dur="5.04">one of them is to get really really</text><text start="3015.119" dur="5.841">honest with uh myself and with you as a</text><text start="3017.599" dur="4.401">reader about the ways in which i</text><text start="3020.96" dur="3.52">um</text><text start="3022" dur="4.16">necessarily fictionalize just by the act</text><text start="3024.48" dur="3.359">of making land straight the moment that</text><text start="3026.16" dur="3.84">we we speak in</text><text start="3027.839" dur="3.76">the moment we speak we speak in a speech</text><text start="3030" dur="2.48">genre the moment we&amp;#39;re using a speech</text><text start="3031.599" dur="3.201">genre</text><text start="3032.48" dur="4">we&amp;#39;re abiding by certain kinds of rules</text><text start="3034.8" dur="4.039">and therefore you know we can feel the</text><text start="3036.48" dur="5.76">contours of</text><text start="3038.839" dur="5.881">um genre pulling against us so what i&amp;#39;m</text><text start="3042.24" dur="3.599">really trying to do is use genre to sort</text><text start="3044.72" dur="2.32">of pull</text><text start="3045.839" dur="3.921">um</text><text start="3047.04" dur="5.68">pretension away a fantasy</text><text start="3104.72" dur="6.8">um that that was one you know there are</text><text start="3107.599" dur="5.76">moments that are um</text><text start="3111.52" dur="3.12">that are sort of lightly edited or</text><text start="3113.359" dur="4.161">whatever but they&amp;#39;re remote so actually</text><text start="3114.64" dur="4.32">you know just before i came uh here</text><text start="3117.52" dur="2.319">where i was out with</text><text start="3118.96" dur="3.84">uh</text><text start="3119.839" dur="4.321">my my friends my collaborator my um</text><text start="3122.8" dur="4.16">someone i&amp;#39;ve known and loved for a very</text><text start="3124.16" dur="4.159">long time his name is cecilia who is you</text><text start="3126.96" dur="3.2">know an inspiration to me in a lot of</text><text start="3128.319" dur="3.921">different ways and it&amp;#39;s also kind of</text><text start="3130.16" dur="6.48">massive uh intellectual</text><text start="3132.24" dur="5.839">uh influence on me as well um and she</text><text start="3136.64" dur="4.24">she and i were talking about the scene</text><text start="3138.079" dur="4.801">in the fourth chapter which um in which</text><text start="3140.88" dur="4.64">she appears the first half of the fourth</text><text start="3142.88" dur="5.439">chapter is a kind of attempt to relay</text><text start="3145.52" dur="3.76">a conversation that she and i have</text><text start="3148.319" dur="2.321">um</text><text start="3149.28" dur="3.36">the first time we met after i had</text><text start="3150.64" dur="4.56">transitioned and</text><text start="3152.64" dur="4.479">you know she was saying uh today when we</text><text start="3155.2" dur="4.24">were just about to start she was just</text><text start="3157.119" dur="4.401">saying she remembers like word for work</text><text start="3159.44" dur="4.159">these things being said</text><text start="3161.52" dur="4.16">and you know i was contacted again by a</text><text start="3163.599" dur="3.921">friend in the uk last week</text><text start="3165.68" dur="3.04">you know his copy of the book arrived on</text><text start="3167.52" dur="2.16">friday and started reading it she was</text><text start="3168.72" dur="2.32">like oh my god i remember when that</text><text start="3169.68" dur="3.2">happened and</text><text start="3171.04" dur="4.079">again it&amp;#39;s like there&amp;#39;s a real attempt</text><text start="3172.88" dur="6.16">to be extremely precise about the</text><text start="3175.119" dur="5.121">details um if there&amp;#39;s any attempts to</text><text start="3179.04" dur="2.799">persuade you that something really</text><text start="3180.24" dur="3.119">happens but there&amp;#39;s also some attempt to</text><text start="3181.839" dur="3.681">really get honest with</text><text start="3183.359" dur="5.281">um and refuse</text><text start="3185.52" dur="4.48">uh in fact polemically to refuse the</text><text start="3188.64" dur="3.76">um</text><text start="3190" dur="5.119">the the comfortable logics by which we</text><text start="3192.4" dur="6">um acclimate ourselves to generic</text><text start="3195.119" dur="6">conventions of life writing</text><text start="3198.4" dur="4.88">i i was just thinking about</text><text start="3201.119" dur="4.24">what uh</text><text start="3203.28" dur="6.559">what a bold move it is for to do a</text><text start="3205.359" dur="4.48">fantasia on your own hate mail and doing</text><text start="3212.96" dur="2.879">doing that as a reading there&amp;#39;s</text><text start="3214" dur="3.92">something so an incredible rhetorical</text><text start="3215.839" dur="4.321">move and the kinds of</text><text start="3217.92" dur="4.48">um</text><text start="3220.16" dur="3.36">i mean you make your hater quite smart i</text><text start="3222.4" dur="2.88">i don&amp;#39;t know</text><text start="3223.52" dur="4.16">it was just something that i was yeah</text><text start="3225.28" dur="3.44">uh there there&amp;#39;s there&amp;#39;s reader</text><text start="3227.68" dur="4.08">questions</text><text start="3228.72" dur="4.56">too wait um that are more important than</text><text start="3231.76" dur="3.28">my</text><text start="3233.28" dur="4.16">ill-formed thoughts</text><text start="3235.04" dur="4.88">oh uh</text><text start="3237.44" dur="4">anyone is asking me what&amp;#39;s the word uh</text><text start="3239.92" dur="3.199">it&amp;#39;s not made out by by barbara</text><text start="3241.44" dur="2.48">johnson&amp;#39;s reference</text><text start="3243.119" dur="2.96">yeah</text><text start="3243.92" dur="4.48">um it&amp;#39;s not made up it&amp;#39;s taken from the</text><text start="3246.079" dur="4.561">melamed it&amp;#39;s diva guestion divergation</text><text start="3248.4" dur="3.919">um splitting like that a lot of</text><text start="3250.64" dur="3.52">post-structural critics were super</text><text start="3252.319" dur="4.961">interested in various different vaginal</text><text start="3254.16" dur="6.32">images or spatial arrangement um</text><text start="3257.28" dur="5.36">and you know this was</text><text start="3260.48" dur="3.599">splitting of a single meaning into two</text><text start="3262.64" dur="3.36">which is different to the daridian</text><text start="3264.079" dur="4.081">motion of imagination which is when two</text><text start="3266" dur="3.2">things curl back and make an enclosure</text><text start="3268.16" dur="3.6">like that</text><text start="3269.2" dur="6.32">um you know</text><text start="3271.76" dur="3.76">so we all learned a new word</text><text start="3276.24" dur="2.4">but the important one is the one that</text><text start="3277.52" dur="4.16">they didn&amp;#39;t actually talk about is</text><text start="3278.64" dur="5.52">seclusion which is a text that um</text><text start="3281.68" dur="4.399">a word that is like conspicuously not in</text><text start="3284.16" dur="4.24">this book but soclesian is another text</text><text start="3286.079" dur="4.641">to thinking about the vaginal enclosure</text><text start="3288.4" dur="4.959">um but it&amp;#39;s a way of referring the way</text><text start="3290.72" dur="3.76">referring to um</text><text start="3293.359" dur="3.76">the</text><text start="3294.48" dur="6.8">grasping and pulling in of an object</text><text start="3297.119" dur="4.161">like this right with the pen</text><text start="3301.359" dur="6.081">as an active move so it&amp;#39;s a transitive</text><text start="3304.64" dur="4.32">act of clenching in which the object is</text><text start="3307.44" dur="4.639">the thing pulled in</text><text start="3308.96" dur="4.72">rather than um penetration so you know</text><text start="3312.079" dur="3.201">just sort of like attempt and feminist</text><text start="3313.68" dur="3.6">sort of sexuality studies to think about</text><text start="3315.28" dur="2.96">penetration in such a way as to</text><text start="3317.28" dur="3.039">privilege</text><text start="3318.24" dur="4.079">um</text><text start="3320.319" dur="3.921">the the seclusive rather than the</text><text start="3322.319" dur="4">penetrating and to think of the</text><text start="3324.24" dur="4.079">seclusive as the active rather than the</text><text start="3326.319" dur="2.961">penetrated to the active</text><text start="3328.319" dur="2.401">um</text><text start="3329.28" dur="2.799">and you know that&amp;#39;s something that the</text><text start="3330.72" dur="3.599">book thinks about in various different</text><text start="3332.079" dur="3.441">ways and it&amp;#39;s you know the word penis is</text><text start="3334.319" dur="2.561">in the title and as they say there are</text><text start="3335.52" dur="3.12">dick jokes everywhere but there is this</text><text start="3336.88" dur="3.199">kind of question of like</text><text start="3338.64" dur="3.6">what does it mean to stop thinking about</text><text start="3340.079" dur="7.641">the penis as a kind of um</text><text start="3342.24" dur="5.48">active or penetrating uh object</text><text start="3348.16" dur="2.32">um</text><text start="3358.079" dur="5.561">thank you for that oh we gotta thank you</text><text start="3360.64" dur="3">um</text><text start="3364.88" dur="4.88">are there any more audience questions</text><text start="3370.96" dur="4.08">or or should we</text><text start="3373.28" dur="3.279">i mean now i&amp;#39;m thinking about i can read</text><text start="3375.04" dur="3.84">a little more because the thing is you</text><text start="3376.559" dur="4.161">know just going to read a part</text><text start="3405.68" dur="3.84">that describes uh</text><text start="3408.64" dur="3.84">you know</text><text start="3409.52" dur="5.68">that moment of of of coming into class</text><text start="3412.48" dur="2.72">and um</text><text start="3415.28" dur="2.96">anyway</text><text start="3416.319" dur="5.361">thomas carlyle at green light it sounds</text><text start="3418.24" dur="3.44">like he was there signing books</text><text start="3421.76" dur="4.559">a penis is not a dick a penis is</text><text start="3424.16" dur="4.639">definitively not a dick a dick is the</text><text start="3426.319" dur="4.961">thing that a penis is not insofar as the</text><text start="3428.799" dur="5.04">given object is a a penis it is there to</text><text start="3431.28" dur="4.64">also be not a dick</text><text start="3433.839" dur="3.601">the day i came out at work i spent some</text><text start="3435.92" dur="3.84">time trying to work out whether the</text><text start="3437.44" dur="4.08">characteristic part of a barrow pig that</text><text start="3439.76" dur="3.68">hits the title character in the face of</text><text start="3441.52" dur="3.52">an early chapter of judy obscure with a</text><text start="3443.44" dur="3.44">penis or a dick</text><text start="3445.04" dur="3.12">and there&amp;#39;s a quote from judy obscure in</text><text start="3446.88" dur="3.199">his deep concentration on these</text><text start="3448.16" dur="3.919">transactions of the future jude&amp;#39;s walk</text><text start="3450.079" dur="3.52">had flattened and he was now standing</text><text start="3452.079" dur="3.04">quite still looking at the ground as</text><text start="3453.599" dur="4.321">though the future was thrown there on by</text><text start="3455.119" dur="4.561">a magic lantern on a sudden something</text><text start="3457.92" dur="4.08">smacked him sharply in the ear and he</text><text start="3459.68" dur="4">became aware that a soft cold substance</text><text start="3462" dur="4.24">had been flung at him and had fallen at</text><text start="3463.68" dur="4.96">his feet a glance told him what it was a</text><text start="3466.24" dur="4.559">piece of flesh the characteristic part</text><text start="3468.64" dur="4.24">of a barrow pig which the countrymen</text><text start="3470.799" dur="4.401">used to greasing their boots as it was</text><text start="3472.88" dur="4.16">useless for any other purpose pigs were</text><text start="3475.2" dur="3.76">rather plentiful hereabouts is</text><text start="3486.319" dur="4">indistinguishable from other parts and</text><text start="3487.839" dur="4.321">therefore not exactly a part at all or</text><text start="3490.319" dur="3.52">whose particular qualities determine the</text><text start="3492.16" dur="3.36">identity of the whole under some</text><text start="3493.839" dur="3.921">taxonomic scheme</text><text start="3495.52" dur="2.24">blah</text><text start="3500.839" dur="3.641">blah wasn&amp;#39;t sure that the students were</text><text start="3503.28" dur="3.039">especially interested in this</text><text start="3504.48" dur="3.44">distinction but the difference between a</text><text start="3506.319" dur="4.161">material body and the body as it is</text><text start="3507.92" dur="5.12">fantasized into existence formalized and</text><text start="3510.48" dur="5.28">mythologized was all that was on my mind</text><text start="3513.04" dur="4.16">and i&amp;#39;ll end there and just because</text><text start="3515.76" dur="3.039">saying this and recounting this will</text><text start="3517.2" dur="3.44">hopefully at least prove to someone in</text><text start="3518.799" dur="4">the room uh who was in the room when</text><text start="3520.64" dur="4.24">that when that very thing happened that</text><text start="3522.799" dur="2.961">um i&amp;#39;m pretty serious about being honest</text><text start="3524.88" dur="3.76">about</text><text start="3525.76" dur="2.88">things that i up</text><text start="3528.96" dur="4.879">thank you so much this is fabulous</text><text read</text><text start="3545.599" dur="2.641">it&amp;#39;s written by a non-black queer</text><text start="3547.28" dur="2.16">teacher</text><text start="3548.24" dur="3.28">who&amp;#39;s thinking about moving through</text><text start="3549.44" dur="4.24">spaces as a trans teacher and how</text><text start="3551.52" dur="4.64">students demand legibility in their own</text><text start="3553.68" dur="4.32">way as a non-black trans teacher working</text><text start="3556.16" dur="3.04">with predominantly black students i</text><text start="3558" dur="2.799">wonder how</text><text start="3559.2" dur="3.599">you navigate different spaces and</text><text start="3560.799" dur="3.921">demands for legibility from those whose</text><text start="3562.799" dur="3.921">experiences of oppression are different</text><text start="3564.72" dur="3.68">but are also experiencing problems of</text><text start="3566.72" dur="2.8">legibility that&amp;#39;s an interesting thing</text><text start="3568.4" dur="3.439">yeah</text><text start="3569.52" dur="4.559">it&amp;#39;s a big and big big big interesting</text><text start="3571.839" dur="4.161">question um you know just to be clear</text><text start="3574.079" dur="2.961">about their syntax because it may not</text><text start="3576" dur="3.2">have been obvious people who are just</text><text start="3577.04" dur="3.68">hearing that rather reading it but um</text><text start="3579.2" dur="3.84">vin&amp;#39;s friend was saying that they are a</text><text start="3580.72" dur="3.76">person who um works primarily with black</text><text start="3583.04" dur="4.16">students i don&amp;#39;t work primarily with</text><text start="3584.48" dur="4.16">black students um right</text><text start="3587.2" dur="2.56">yeah yeah i don&amp;#39;t know i mean that was</text><text start="3588.64" dur="2.32">all very clear and you&amp;#39;re reading it in</text><text start="3589.76" dur="4">the comment but it was just you know i</text><text start="3590.96" dur="5.92">wanted to be clear about that myself um</text><text start="3593.76" dur="3.12">you know i uh</text><text start="3596.96" dur="3.52">it&amp;#39;s so hard you know i remember the</text><text start="3599.04" dur="3.68">week that i came out at work literally</text><text start="3600.48" dur="4.72">the week after that it was um</text><text start="3602.72" dur="4.72">prospective grad student recruitment</text><text start="3605.2" dur="4.399">week at berkeley and i had someone come</text><text start="3607.44" dur="3.6">to me on my office and and</text><text start="3609.599" dur="3.121">just asked me what it was like to be</text><text start="3611.04" dur="3.68">trans at berkeley and i was like i&amp;#39;ve</text><text start="3612.72" dur="3.92">got no idea like i&amp;#39;ve been doing</text><text start="3614.72" dur="3.28">this for less than a week</text><text start="3616.64" dur="3.199">um</text><text start="3618" dur="5.43">ask me in in five years and even then</text><text start="3619.839" dur="4.72">i&amp;#39;ll give you a very good partial answer</text><text start="3623.43" dur="2.81">[Music]</text><text start="3624.559" dur="3.76">that&amp;#39;s higher yeah exactly i&amp;#39;ll give you</text><text start="3626.24" dur="4.16">a manipulator about how like five years</text><text start="3628.319" dur="3.921">kind of like impossible and maybe you</text><text start="3630.4" dur="4.24">know and and the thing is like there&amp;#39;s</text><text start="3632.24" dur="4.4">so so so much especially in like trans</text><text start="3634.64" dur="3.199">of color studies about the limitations</text><text start="3636.64" dur="3.12">of</text><text start="3637.839" dur="4">visibility and legibility as rubric to</text><text start="3639.76" dur="4.559">transition and you know i i&amp;#39;m very</text><text start="3641.839" dur="4.081">familiar with reading um you know</text><text start="3644.319" dur="3.76">important work in this subject by</text><text start="3645.92" dur="5.439">tourmaline by che gossip by eric stanley</text><text start="3648.079" dur="5.52">who&amp;#39;s a colleague of mine at berkeley um</text><text start="3651.359" dur="4">you know it&amp;#39;s it&amp;#39;s it&amp;#39;s a topic that is</text><text start="3653.599" dur="4.881">easy to theorize but in terms of the</text><text start="3655.359" dur="5.361">pedagogy of um what does it mean to be</text><text start="3658.48" dur="3.599">out and how does outness work for white</text><text start="3660.72" dur="3.92">trans people</text><text start="3662.079" dur="6.081">um it is a complicated question because</text><text start="3664.64" dur="7.199">the thing is that a significant</text><text start="3668.16" dur="4.959">majority of queer and trans out students</text><text start="3671.839" dur="2.801">at berkeley and community members of</text><text start="3673.119" dur="2.561">berkeley are not white</text><text start="3674.64" dur="3.199">um</text><text start="3675.68" dur="4.879">and you know i&amp;#39;m not sure that i know</text><text start="3677.839" dur="4.881">exactly why that is um but i&amp;#39;ve been</text><text start="3680.559" dur="3.361">part of the uh you know i currently</text><text start="3682.72" dur="3.119">chair the chancellor&amp;#39;s advisory</text><text start="3683.92" dur="4.24">committee on lgbt communities so i know</text><text start="3685.839" dur="3.441">that there&amp;#39;s statistics</text><text start="3688.16" dur="2.72">and</text><text start="3689.28" dur="2.96">uh sorry there&amp;#39;s a clarification from</text><text start="3690.88" dur="2.8">the question</text><text start="3692.24" dur="3.2">that&amp;#39;s saying that they&amp;#39;re not white but</text><text start="3693.68" dur="5.399">they&amp;#39;re not they&amp;#39;re not black so it&amp;#39;s no</text><text start="3695.44" dur="3.639">no no no i realized</text><text start="3705.44" dur="4.08">because that&amp;#39;s what i bring into the</text><text start="3707.04" dur="3.279">room um and</text><text start="3709.52" dur="6.079">uh</text><text start="3710.319" dur="5.28">you know again it&amp;#39;s not um</text><text start="3715.76" dur="3.279">it&amp;#39;s not a question that i know how to</text><text start="3717.599" dur="2.321">answer uh</text><text start="3719.039" dur="3.841">you know</text><text start="3719.92" dur="5.439">well all i can say is that um</text><text start="3722.88" dur="4.719">i find that queer and queer and trans</text><text start="3725.359" dur="3.76">community is a place where it is</text><text start="3727.599" dur="5.2">possible to get</text><text start="3729.119" dur="6.641">honest and open about the racial logics</text><text start="3732.799" dur="4.881">of visibility um and</text><text start="3735.76" dur="3.599">that&amp;#39;s rare in this world because this</text><text start="3737.68" dur="3.04">is a world that tries to stop us from</text><text start="3739.359" dur="3.76">talking about the racial logics of</text><text start="3740.72" dur="4.96">disability that tells us that the only</text><text start="3743.119" dur="5.44">um dignified response to</text><text start="3745.68" dur="5.04">um racial hierarchies of existence is to</text><text start="3748.559" dur="4.081">pretend not to see them which is you</text><text start="3750.72" dur="4.96">know a horrifying</text><text start="3752.64" dur="4.479">abnegation of social relations so</text><text start="3755.68" dur="5.439">i find that</text><text start="3757.119" dur="6.561">yeah totally um and so i i find that</text><text start="3761.119" dur="4.561">it is um</text><text start="3763.68" dur="4.48">it is useful and important to be able to</text><text start="3765.68" dur="4.879">avow and acknowledge um differences and</text><text start="3768.16" dur="6">at the same time to know that</text><text start="3770.559" dur="5.201">uh i&amp;#39;m sometimes positioned</text><text start="3774.16" dur="3.439">you know as i say i&amp;#39;m chairing this</text><text start="3775.76" dur="3.92">committee and committee&amp;#39;s largely white</text><text start="3777.599" dur="4.401">my co-chair isn&amp;#39;t white thank god but</text><text start="3779.68" dur="5.119">you know i&amp;#39;m sometimes positioned as a</text><text start="3782" dur="5.44">kind of uh visible figure and i&amp;#39;m very</text><text start="3784.799" dur="4.8">aware that in fact my visibility is</text><text start="3787.44" dur="3.679">um troubling in certain ways you know</text><text start="3789.599" dur="4">the argument that morgan paige makes in</text><text start="3791.119" dur="4.881">her essay in uh in trapdoor which is a</text><text start="3793.599" dur="4.321">great collection on what you know the</text><text start="3796" dur="3.2">the paradox of visibility for trans</text><text start="3797.92" dur="3.36">people the only morgan page makes</text><text start="3799.2" dur="3.44">straight admire and struggle with</text><text start="3801.28" dur="3.2">because it you know it&amp;#39;s one of these</text><text start="3802.64" dur="3.52">things where if it&amp;#39;s true like i&amp;#39;m i&amp;#39;m</text><text start="3804.48" dur="4.4">not doing the right thing but i struggle</text><text start="3806.16" dur="4.32">with it but morgan page says you know</text><text start="3808.88" dur="3.04">throughout the history of trans people</text><text start="3810.48" dur="3.28">that have been trans celebrities who</text><text start="3811.92" dur="4.08">have been mostly white mostly privileged</text><text start="3813.76" dur="4.16">mostly kind of like not exactly cis</text><text start="3816" dur="3.44">passing but mostly kind of passing and</text><text start="3817.92" dur="3.76">legibly trans feminine they&amp;#39;re kind of</text><text start="3819.44" dur="4.24">like caitlyn start="3843.68" dur="4.32">trans feminine heroine</text><text start="3845.92" dur="3.76">is this it&amp;#39;s a way of actually</text><text start="3848" dur="4.079">increasing and escalating and</text><text start="3849.68" dur="4.08">intensifying oppression of especially</text><text start="3852.079" dur="4">trans people of color who do not have</text><text start="3853.76" dur="3.839">the same institutional protection it&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="3856.079" dur="4.48">very very powerful argument and they</text><text start="3857.599" dur="4.72">think about it all the time um and my</text><text start="3860.559" dur="3.52">visibility is not your visibility and</text><text start="3862.319" dur="3.921">our visibility is not their visibility</text><text start="3864.079" dur="4.161">and that you know these are these are</text><text start="3866.24" dur="4.48">important distinctions to to abound to</text><text start="3868.24" dur="4.4">acknowledge and at the same time i am</text><text start="3870.72" dur="3.52">aware that when i have been in</text><text start="3872.64" dur="4.24">conversation with community around some</text><text start="3874.24" dur="4">of these
