because</text><text start="8.96" dur="4.639">xfce makes some bold choices there in</text><text start="12" dur="4.56">terms of what apps it ships</text><text start="13.599" dur="4.481">and what they can do and i just wanted</text><text start="16.56" dur="2.559">to reflect a little bit on that so we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="18.08" dur="2.88">going to take a look at the various</text><text start="19.119" dur="2.24">applications that xfc ships out of the</text><text start="20.96" dur="2.559">box</text><text start="21.359" dur="3.361">see what&amp;#39;s missing and see why that</text><text start="23.519" dur="3.441">might be an issue</text><text start="24.72" dur="3.6">for some people but there is one app</text><text start="26.96" dur="3.76">that xfc doesn&amp;#39;t ship</text><text start="28.32" dur="4.64">out of the box unfortunately because</text><text start="30.72" dur="4.96">that&amp;#39;s today&amp;#39;s video sponsor</text><text start="32.96" dur="2.72">to a simple</text><text start="68.799" dur="4.401">and legible user interface and you can</text><text start="70.72" dur="4.32">download it as a dab or an arch package</text><text start="73.2" dur="3.44">it&amp;#39;s also available on windows if you</text><text start="75.04" dur="3.759">need it there as well</text><text start="76.64" dur="3.6">saving sport master is still in you</text><text start="105.52" dur="1.84">feel that the computer is not fighting</text><text start="107.04" dur="2.16">you</text><text start="107.36" dur="3.039">everything that you do just opens</text><text start="109.2" dur="3.64">instantaneously</text><text start="110.399" dur="3.68">and that&amp;#39;s amazing now in terms of</text><text start="112.84" dur="2.919">coherence</text><text start="114.079" dur="3.201">it&amp;#39;s not the best desktop i&amp;#39;ve ever used</text><text start="115.759" dur="3.201">let&amp;#39;s be honest some applications have</text><text start="117.28" dur="2.799">title bars some have menu bars some have</text><text start="118.96" dur="3.839">header bars</text><text start="120.079" dur="3.441">it&amp;#39;s a bit mix and match but for speed</text><text start="122.799" dur="3.521">it&amp;#39;s the best</text><text start="123.52" dur="3.84">if like maverick you have a need a need</text><text start="126.32" dur="2.88">for speed then</text><text start="127.36" dur="3.599">xfc is probably gonna be your top gun</text><text start="129.2" dur="4.32">because all the apps are just gonna</text><text start="130.959" dur="3.521">fly right onto the screen and now that</text><text start="133.52" dur="4.24">this horrible</text><text start="134.48" dur="5.2">80s colored metaphor is done let&amp;#39;s begin</text><text start="137.76" dur="3.92">with the applications themselves</text><text start="139.68" dur="4.32">so probably the most important app on a</text><text start="141.68" dur="4.559">desktop is a good file manager</text><text start="144" dur="4.319">xfce ships with thunder which is</text><text start="146.239" dur="2.881">probably some kind of old norse word to</text><text start="148.319" dur="3.2">say thor</text><text start="149.12" dur="3.52">the god of thunder since the app&amp;#39;s icon</text><text start="151.519" dur="3.44">is a hammer</text><text start="152.64" dur="4.4">thunar is simple on the surface kinda</text><text start="154.959" dur="4.801">looking like pantheon&amp;#39;s file manager</text><text start="157.04" dur="4.64">if somebody had grafted a menu bar to it</text><text start="159.76" dur="4">it supports tabs of course</text><text start="161.68" dur="3.76">and lets you edit the location directly</text><text start="163.76" dur="2.96">instead of using a weird keyboard</text><text start="165.44" dur="3.519">shortcut to do so</text><text start="166.72" dur="4.239">i&amp;#39;m looking at you nautilus it also lets</text><text start="168.959" dur="3.201">you use a breadcrumb style path bar if</text><text start="170.959" dur="3.841">you prefer</text><text start="172.16" dur="3.52">the sidebar is your average fare it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="174.8" dur="2.96">listing places</text><text start="175.68" dur="3.199">devices and network but you can switch</text><text start="177.76" dur="4.24">that to a tree view</text><text start="178.879" dur="3.921">if that&amp;#39;s what you prefer view modes are</text><text start="182" dur="3.519">limited</text><text start="182.8" dur="4.4">to an icon view and a list view or a</text><text start="185.519" dur="4.561">more compact list view called</text><text start="187.2" dur="3.759">compact there is no column view here and</text><text start="190.08" dur="3.519">on that note</text><text start="190.959" dur="4.64">why is elementor ios the only desktop</text><text start="193.599" dur="2.961">shipping a file manager that has the</text><text start="195.599" dur="3.201">column view</text><text start="196.56" dur="3.679">the column view is amazing and it should</text><text start="198.8" dur="3.439">be everywhere</text><text start="200.239" dur="4.241">now in terms of options thunder is</text><text start="202.239" dur="3.841">pretty complete you can move to a single</text><text start="204.48" dur="2.56">click behavior instead of the double</text><text start="206.08" dur="3.2">click to open</text><text start="207.04" dur="4.559">you can tweak the icon sizes in the site</text><text start="209.28" dur="3.28">pane you can open new windows in tabs</text><text start="211.599" dur="3.681">instead</text><text start="212.56" dur="4.56">along a lot of other available tweaks</text><text start="215.28" dur="3.84">thundar also comes with a bulk rename</text><text start="217.12" dur="3.679">utility which ships as a separate app</text><text start="219.12" dur="4.08">instead of being directly implemented in</text><text start="220.799" dur="4.641">the file manager and it lets you</text><text start="223.2" dur="3.2">well rename files in bulk what did you</text><text start="225.44" dur="2.32">expect</text><text start="226.4" dur="3.04">it&amp;#39;s still pretty handy to have out of</text><text start="227.76" dur="3.839">the box especially if you work with</text><text start="229.44" dur="3.439">music files that you got in a totally</text><text start="231.599" dur="3.041">legal manner</text><text start="232.879" dur="3.121">but for some reason don&amp;#39;t have the same</text><text start="234.64" dur="3.84">naming convention</text><text start="236" dur="5.04">so thunar is a good file manager it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="238.48" dur="4.24">fast it&amp;#39;s responsive it&amp;#39;s simple out of</text><text start="241.04" dur="3.279">the box but you can really customize how</text><text start="242.72" dur="4.32">it looks and feels which is</text><text start="244.319" dur="4.721">pretty good next is the terminal and</text><text start="247.04" dur="2.479">yeah i know i always say that a terminal</text><text start="249.04" dur="2.64">isn&amp;#39;t an</text><text start="249.519" dur="4">absolute necessity on linux but some</text><text start="251.68" dur="2.32">people just like to do things the old</text><text start="253.519" dur="2.641">way</text><text start="254" dur="3.68">and for them a terminal is a really</text><text start="256.16" dur="4.079">important app</text><text start="257.68" dur="4.88">xfce&amp;#39;s one is named terminal and i can</text><text start="260.239" dur="4.321">only applaud the lack of a custom name</text><text start="262.56" dur="3.76">apps should have descriptive names and a</text><text start="264.56" dur="3.359">terminal should be called</text><text start="266.32" dur="3.439">terminal it shouldn&amp;#39;t be called</text><text start="267.919" dur="4.801">commander line or</text><text start="269.759" dur="4.961">neo&amp;#39;s dream it should be named terminal</text><text start="272.72" dur="4.24">don&amp;#39;t use whatever pop culture reference</text><text start="274.72" dur="5.039">you want to name your app it&amp;#39;s just not</text><text start="276.96" dur="4.88">understandable by regular users so this</text><text start="279.759" dur="3.681">app supports tabs and it lets you change</text><text start="281.84" dur="2.4">the copy paste behavior of the</text><text start="283.44" dur="2.88">application</text><text start="284.24" dur="3.36">with either a direct copy and paste of</text><text start="286.32" dur="3.04">commands or</text><text start="287.6" dur="3.2">it can show you a dialog to inform you</text><text start="289.36" dur="3.68">that pasting whatever command</text><text start="290.8" dur="4.16">any idiot will give you on the internet</text><text start="293.04" dur="3.68">is a pretty bad idea</text><text start="294.96" dur="3.76">not this idiot though you can trust this</text><text start="296.72" dur="3.6">guy so you can change the fonts the</text><text start="298.72" dur="3.199">default number of lines and columns in</text><text start="300.32" dur="3.28">the terminal use a transparent</text><text start="301.919" dur="3.441">background change the colors</text><text start="303.6" dur="3.2">and even select what will be picked up</text><text start="305.36" dur="3.119">when you double click on something so</text><text start="306.8" dur="2.56">you can even tailor what text you&amp;#39;re</text><text start="308.479" dur="3.44">going to select</text><text start="309.36" dur="4.08">that&amp;#39;s pretty cool so once again it&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="311.919" dur="3.12">very simple application</text><text start="313.44" dur="3.44">following in the footsteps of thunar</text><text start="315.039" dur="3.361">it&amp;#39;s simple by default but if you really</text><text start="316.88" dur="4.64">want to make the experience your own</text><text start="318.4" dur="4.32">it&amp;#39;s very easy to do so xfc uses an</text><text start="321.52" dur="3.84">image viewer called</text><text start="322.72" dur="4.64">restretto because of course a name based</text><text start="325.36" dur="3.679">on a subpar beverage will tell users</text><text start="327.36" dur="4.72">that it&amp;#39;s used to view images</text><text start="329.039" dur="4.241">or not okay now on that note xfc is</text><text start="332.08" dur="3.36">smart enough to call this</text><text start="333.28" dur="4.24">image viewer in the title bar and add</text><text start="335.44" dur="3.759">that information in the menu as well so</text><text start="337.52" dur="3.6">it was basically just an opportunity for</text><text start="339.199" dur="5.121">me to be mean to coffee again</text><text start="341.12" dur="5.04">i&amp;#39;m sorry ristretto is competent it&amp;#39;s no</text><text start="344.32" dur="3.439">photo library manager so it doesn&amp;#39;t have</text><text start="346.16" dur="3.52">a detained capabilities</text><text start="347.759" dur="3.121">but it will let you open any image</text><text start="349.68" dur="3.6">blazingly fast</text><text start="350.88" dur="3.44">set it as your default wallpaper or set</text><text start="353.28" dur="2.8">a slideshow</text><text start="354.32" dur="3.84">you also get a sidebar if you opened</text><text start="356.08" dur="3.52">multiple images and you can switch from</text><text start="358.16" dur="3.52">one to the next easily</text><text start="359.6" dur="4.4">in short it&amp;#39;s a simple image viewer</text><text start="361.68" dur="5.04">nothing bad nothing great here it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="364" dur="4.56">it&amp;#39;s good xfc also ships a bunch of</text><text start="366.72" dur="4.16">utilities although some of these might</text><text start="368.56" dur="4">have been added by fedora instead</text><text start="370.88" dur="3.039">i mentioned previously that there was no</text><text start="372.56" dur="3.12">file search in the menu</text><text start="373.919" dur="3.28">and that&amp;#39;s because you have a dedicated</text><text start="375.68" dur="3.68">utility for that called</text><text start="377.199" dur="4.161">catfish it doesn&amp;#39;t seem to have a</text><text start="379.36" dur="2.64">specific keyboard shortcut attributed to</text><text start="381.36" dur="2.88">it though</text><text start="382" dur="4.24">but it is lightning fast although its</text><text start="384.24" dur="3.92">gdk3 nature doesn&amp;#39;t seem to record</text><text start="386.24" dur="3.84">itself too well with the default theme</text><text start="388.16" dur="3.28">with menus not responding like they</text><text start="390.08" dur="3.76">should on hover</text><text start="391.44" dur="5.28">yeah i know it&amp;#39;s a nitpick you also get</text><text start="393.84" dur="3.919">a basic task manager with graphs for cpu</text><text start="396.72" dur="2.96">and ram usage</text><text start="397.759" dur="3.28">and a list of processors that you can</text><text start="399.68" dur="5.6">kill without mercy</text><text start="401.039" dur="4.241">just like desktop icons did to my father</text><text start="405.6" dur="4.08">now there&amp;#39;s also a really weird thing</text><text start="407.44" dur="4.72">called xf dashboard and i don&amp;#39;t know if</text><text start="409.68" dur="4.72">that&amp;#39;s something xfc ships by default</text><text start="412.16" dur="4.159">or if that&amp;#39;s something fedora added but</text><text start="414.4" dur="3.84">it seems to be aiming to copy the gnome</text><text start="416.319" dur="4.16">3 activities view</text><text start="418.24" dur="3.12">it feels like it&amp;#39;s not ready yet and i</text><text start="420.479" dur="3.201">don&amp;#39;t really know why</text><text start="421.36" dur="4">xfc would add that by default as they</text><text start="423.68" dur="5.2">have their own desktop metaphor</text><text start="425.36" dur="5.6">that isn&amp;#39;t gnome but who am i to judge</text><text start="428.88" dur="3.2">you also get the usual screenshot tool</text><text start="430.96" dur="3.679">really simple</text><text start="432.08" dur="4.239">a very basic notepad that looks like</text><text start="434.639" dur="3.601">well microsoft&amp;#39;s notepad</text><text start="436.319" dur="3.72">and a calculator whose name will make</text><text start="438.24" dur="4.64">you sound like you have the flu</text><text start="440.039" dur="5.72">calculator with a g</text><text start="442.88" dur="4.96">there&amp;#39;s also a dictionary and xf burn</text><text start="445.759" dur="3.84">which is a cd dvd burner</text><text start="447.84" dur="3.68">which i won&amp;#39;t spend too much time on</text><text start="449.599" dur="3.841">because i don&amp;#39;t have any cd or dvd</text><text start="451.52" dur="4.079">drives that i could use to try that out</text><text start="453.44" dur="4.479">and that leaves us with a lot of missing</text><text start="455.599" dur="3.44">parts according to the official xfc</text><text start="457.919" dur="3.441">projects page</text><text start="459.039" dur="3.361">xfc doesn&amp;#39;t have an official default</text><text start="461.36" dur="4.16">email client</text><text start="462.4" dur="6.079">calendar photo library manager</text><text start="465.52" dur="3.92">media player music player it lacks a lot</text><text start="468.479" dur="3.44">of stuff</text><text start="469.44" dur="4.72">and that&amp;#39;s okay because it&amp;#39;s kind of the</text><text start="471.919" dur="3.84">philosophy of xfce here</text><text start="474.16" dur="3.36">they don&amp;#39;t want to reinvent the wheel</text><text start="475.759" dur="2.56">and create their own set of applications</text><text start="477.52" dur="3.359">they want to have</text><text start="478.319" dur="4.16">a lightweight and fast modular desktop</text><text start="480.879" dur="2.32">that you can replace each and every</text><text start="482.479" dur="2.881">component</text><text start="483.199" dur="4">by something that you&amp;#39;d prefer so they</text><text start="485.36" dur="3.92">don&amp;#39;t feel the need to recreate</text><text start="487.199" dur="3.521">applications that already exist and will</text><text start="489.28" dur="2.479">work well within their desktop</text><text start="490.72" dur="3.68">environment</text><text start="491.759" dur="3.921">now that still comes with a few problems</text><text start="494.4" dur="4.4">though because</text><text start="495.68" dur="6.16">this means that xfce will never feel</text><text start="498.8" dur="4.959">like a coherent cohesive whole because</text><text start="501.84" dur="4.079">by default all of its apps or most of</text><text start="503.759" dur="3.84">its apps use menu bars some of them use</text><text start="505.919" dur="4">header bars but most of them use</text><text start="507.599" dur="4.481">menu bars if you import gnome or</text><text start="509.919" dur="3.68">elementor os apps inside of xfce then</text><text start="512.08" dur="2.959">you&amp;#39;re going to get header bars not menu</text><text start="513.599" dur="4">bars so it&amp;#39;s not going to look</text><text start="515.039" dur="4.321">right if you import kde applications</text><text start="517.599" dur="4.081">they&amp;#39;re made with cute not gdk so they</text><text start="519.36" dur="4.08">are never gonna look native either</text><text start="521.68" dur="4.48">which means that there is no way for</text><text start="523.44" dur="5.28">xfce without having default applications</text><text start="526.16" dur="3.04">to have a nice and coherent look and</text><text start="528.72" dur="2.96">feel</text><text start="529.2" dur="4.24">across all applications now some people</text><text start="531.68" dur="2.4">will not care about that in the</text><text start="533.44" dur="3.04">slightest</text><text start="534.08" dur="4.24">and that&amp;#39;s okay if you want to have a</text><text start="536.48" dur="3.68">really fast really modular desktop</text><text start="538.32" dur="3.76">and you can pick and choose every single</text><text start="540.16" dur="4.72">app or module that you want to use</text><text start="542.08" dur="3.12">even if they don&amp;#39;t act or feel the same</text><text start="544.88" dur="2.72">then</text><text start="545.2" dur="3.52">xfc is a fantastic choice but if you&amp;#39;re</text><text start="547.6" dur="3.04">like me</text><text start="548.72" dur="4">and you want a cohesive vision a</text><text start="550.64" dur="3.28">coherent interface with apps that look</text><text start="552.72" dur="3.04">and feel the same that look and feel</text><text start="553.92" dur="4.4">like they were made by the same team</text><text start="555.76" dur="4.72">then xfc is not really going to work for</text><text start="558.32" dur="4.56">you but that&amp;#39;s not going to stop me from</text><text start="560.48" dur="2.88">keeping my exploration of xfce the next</text><text start="562.88" dur="2.639">video</text><text start="563.36" dur="4.159">will be about customization because</text><text start="565.519" dur="3.921">having that ability to remove</text><text start="567.519" dur="3.44">every single module that you want and</text><text start="569.44" dur="2.56">replace it by something that you prefer</text><text start="570.959" dur="2.801">using</text><text start="572" dur="3.76">is something that is really really</text><text start="573.76"
