hey guys this is nick and it's time weforge aheadin our exploration of the xfc desktopand this time we're going to talk aboutits default applications becausexfce makes some bold choices there interms of what apps it shipsand what they can do and i just wantedto reflect a little bit on that so we'regoing to take a look at the variousapplications that xfc ships out of theboxsee what's missing and see why thatmight be an issuefor some people but there is one appthat xfc doesn't shipout of the box unfortunately becausethat's today's video sponsorthis video is sponsored by safing theyare an open you click on anicon it opens instantly you do an actionit does itinstantly this is really nice to use youfeel that the computer is not fightingyoueverything that you do just opensinstantaneouslyand that's amazing now in terms ofcoherenceit's not the best desktop i've ever usedlet's be honest some applications havetitle bars some have menu bars some haveheader barsit's a bit mix and match but for speedit's the bestif like maverick you have a need a needfor speed thenxfc is probably gonna be your top gunbecause all the apps are just gonnafly right onto the screen and now thatthis horrible80s colored metaphor is done let's beginwith the applications themselvesso probably the most important app on adesktop is a good file managerxfce ships with thunder which isprobably some kind of old norse word tosay thorthe god of thunder since the app's iconis a hammerthunar is simple on the surface kindalooking like pantheon's file managerif somebody had grafted a menu bar to itit supports tabs of courseand lets you edit the location directlyinstead of using a weird keyboardshortcut to do soi'm looking at you nautilus it also letsyou use a breadcrumb style path bar ifyou preferthe sidebar is your average fare it'slisting placesdevices and network but you can switchthat to a tree viewif that's what you prefer view modes arelimitedto an icon view and a list view or amore compact list view calledcompact there is no column view here andon that notewhy is elementor ios the only desktopshipping a file manager that has thecolumn viewthe column view is amazing and it shouldbe everywherenow in terms of options thunder ispretty complete you can move to a singleclick behavior instead of the doubleclick to openyou can tweak the icon sizes in the sitepane you can open new windows in tabsinsteadalong a lot of other available tweaksthundar also comes with a bulk renameutility which ships as a separate appinstead of being directly implemented inthe file manager and it lets youwell rename files in bulk what did youexpectit's still pretty handy to have out ofthe box especially if you work withmusic files that you got in a totallylegal mannerbut for some reason don't have the samenaming conventionso thunar is a good file manager it'sfast it's responsive it's simple out ofthe box but you can really customize howit looks and feels which ispretty good next is the terminal andyeah i know i always say that a terminalisn't anabsolute necessity on linux but somepeople just like to do things the oldwayand for them a terminal is a reallyimportant appxfce's one is named terminal and i canonly applaud the lack of a custom nameapps should have descriptive names and aterminal should be calledterminal it shouldn't be calledcommander line orneo's dream it should be named terminaldon't use whatever pop culture referenceyou want to name your app it's just notunderstandable by regular users so thisapp supports tabs and it lets you changethe copy paste behavior of theapplicationwith either a direct copy and paste ofcommands orit can show you a dialog to inform youthat pasting whatever commandany idiot will give you on the internetis a pretty bad ideanot this idiot though you can trust thisguy so you can change the fonts thedefault number of lines and columns inthe terminal use a transparentbackground change the colorsand even select what will be picked upwhen you double click on something soyou can even tailor what text you'regoing to selectthat's pretty cool so once again it's avery simple applicationfollowing in the footsteps of thunarit's simple by default but if you reallywant to make the experience your ownit's very easy to do so xfc uses animage viewer calledrestretto because of course a name basedon a subpar beverage will tell usersthat it's used to view imagesor not okay now on that note xfc issmart enough to call thisimage viewer in the title bar and addthat information in the menu as well soit was basically just an opportunity forme to be mean to coffee againi'm sorry ristretto is competent it's nophoto library manager so it doesn't havea detained capabilitiesbut it will let you open any imageblazingly fastset it as your default wallpaper or seta slideshowyou also get a sidebar if you openedmultiple images and you can switch fromone to the next easilyin short it's a simple image viewernothing bad nothing great here it'sit's good xfc also ships a bunch ofutilities although some of these mighthave been added by fedora insteadi mentioned previously that there was nofile search in the menuand that's because you have a dedicatedutility for that calledcatfish it doesn't seem to have aspecific keyboard shortcut attributed toit thoughbut it is lightning fast although itsgdk3 nature doesn't seem to recorditself too well with the default themewith menus not responding like theyshould on hoveryeah i know it's a nitpick you also geta basic task manager with graphs for cpuand ram usageand a list of processors that you cankill without mercyjust like desktop icons did to my fathernow there's also a really weird thingcalled xf dashboard and i don't know ifthat's something xfc ships by defaultor if that's something fedora added butit seems to be aiming to copy the gnome3 activities viewit feels like it's not ready yet and idon't really know whyxfc would add that by default as theyhave their own desktop metaphorthat isn't gnome but who am i to judgeyou also get the usual screenshot toolreally simplea very basic notepad that looks likewell microsoft's notepadand a calculator whose name will makeyou sound like you have the flucalculator with a gthere's also a dictionary and xf burnwhich is a cd dvd burnerwhich i won't spend too much time onbecause i don't have any cd or dvddrives that i could use to try that outand that leaves us with a lot of missingparts according to the official xfcprojects pagexfc doesn't have an official defaultemail clientcalendar photo library managermedia player music player it lacks a lotof stuffand that's okay because it's kind of thephilosophy of xfce herethey don't want to reinvent the wheeland create their own set of applicationsthey want to havea lightweight and fast modular desktopthat you can replace each and everycomponentby something that you'd prefer so theydon't feel the need to recreateapplications that already exist and willwork well within their desktopenvironmentnow that still comes with a few problemsthough becausethis means that xfce will never feellike a coherent cohesive whole becauseby default all of its apps or most ofits apps use menu bars some of them useheader bars but most of them usemenu bars if you import gnome orelementor os apps inside of xfce thenyou're going to get header bars not menubars so it's not going to lookright if you import kde applicationsthey're made with cute not gdk so theyare never gonna look native eitherwhich means that there is no way forxfce without having default applicationsto have a nice and coherent look andfeelacross all applications now some peoplewill not care about that in theslightestand that's okay if you want to have areally fast really modular desktopand you can pick and choose every singleapp or module that you want to useeven if they don't act or feel the samethenxfc is a fantastic choice but if you'relike meand you want a cohesive vision acoherent interface with apps that lookand feel the same that look and feellike they were made by the same teamthen xfc is not really going to work foryou but that's not going to stop me fromkeeping my exploration of xfce the nextvideowill be about customization becausehaving that ability to removeevery single module that you want andreplace it by something that you preferusingis something that is really reallypowerful and i think we can achieve somepretty good results so we're gonna takea tourprobably at the beginning of june ofmost customizations that we could doand some really really good results thati could find so
