that's coming off achallenging past few weeks withhurricanes Harvey Irma and Maria andother events around theworld it's been hard to see thesuffering but I've been moved andinspired by everydayheroism people opening up their homesand to First Responders literallyrisking their lives to save otherpeople our hearts and prayers are withthe victims and families impacted bythese terribleevents we are working closely with manyrelief agencies in affected areas and weare committed to doing ourpart It's a true privilege to be at thesfjcenter it's a great American Institutionfor jazz performance andeducation and it's really good to seefamiliar faces in the audience as alwaysI want to give a shout out to peoplejoining us on the live stream globallyfrom around theworld uh since last year and sinceGoogle IO we've been working hardcontinuing our shift from a mobile firstto an AI first world we are rethinkingall our core products and working hardto solve user problems by applyingmachine learning andAI let me give you an example recently II visited Legos inNigeria it's a city of 21 million peopleit's an incredibly Dynamic vibrant andever growing city many people are comingonline for the firsttime so it's very exciting unless youhappen to be in the Google Maps team andyou have to map thecityand it is so it is changing so fast andnormally we map a place by using streetview and doing a lot of stuffautomatically but it's difficult to dothat in a place like Legos because thecity is changing you can't always seethe signage clearly and there arevariable address conventions things areinsequential so for example take thathouse there if you squint hard you cansee the street number there it is numberthree to the left of the gate that waswas relatively easy onto a harderproblem now that house you know that'swhat we see from street view I think ashumans it's probably pretty hard maybeone or two of you can spot it out butour computer vision systems thanks tomachine learning can pick it outidentify the street number and startmapping mapping the house so weapproached Legos completely differentlywe deployed machine learning from theground up and just in 5 months the teamwas was able to map 5,000 km of NewRoads 50,000 new addresses and 100,000businesses and it's something whichmakes a real difference for millions ofusers there as Google Maps ispopular and we think this approach isbroadly applicable let's come closer tohome you know parking in San Francisco Idon't even try it anymore but for forthose of you who try it we again usemachine learning we understand locationdata we try to understand patterns ourcars circling around and the color showsthe density of parking and we cananalyze it throughout the day andpredict parking difficulty and in GoogleMaps give you options a simple examplebut it's the kind of Everyday Use casefor which we are using machine learningto make a difference the best example Ican think of what we've talked before isGoogleTranslation I literally remember manyyears ago adding translation in Chromeand making it automatic so that if youland in a page different from yourlanguage we do that for you fast forwardto today with the power of machinelearning on our neural machinetranslation we serve over two billiontranslations in many many languagesevery single day to me shows the powerof staying at a problem constantly usingcomputer science to make it better andseeing users respond to it atscale this is why we are excited aboutthe shift from a mobile first to a AIfirstworld it is not just about applyingmachine learning in in our products butit's radically rethinking how Computingshouldwork at a higher level in an AI firstworld I believe computers should adaptto how people live their lives ratherthan people having to adapt tocomputers and so we think about fourcore attributes as part of thisexperiencefirst people should be able to interactwith Computing in a natural and seamlessway mobile took us a step in thisDirection withmulti-touch but increasingly it needs tobe conversational sensory we need to beable to use our voice gestures andvision to make the experience much moreseamless second it is going to beambient Computing is going to evolvebeyond the phonebe there in many screens around you whenyou need it working foryou third we think it needs to bethoughtfully contextual mobile gave uslimited context you know with identityyour location we were able to improvethe experiencesignificantly in an AI first world wecan have a lot more context and apply itthoughtfully for example if you're intofitness and you land in a new city wecan suggest running routes maybe gymsnearby and healthy eating options and inmy case being a vegetarian and having aweakness for deserts maybe suggest theright restaurants forme finally and probably the mostimportant of it all you know Computingneeds to learn and adapt constantly overtime it just doesn't work that way todayin Mobile you know developers writesoftware and constantly ship updates butyou know let me give a a small example Iuse Google Calendar all the time onSundays I try to get a weekly view ofhow my week looks like but once the workweek starts say on a Monday or a TuesdayI'm trying to get a view into what thenext few hours looks like I have toconstantly Tagle toggle back and forthGoogle Calendar should automaticallyunderstand my context and show me theRight View it's a very simple examplebut software needs to fundamentallychange how it works it needs to learnand adapt and that applies to importantthings like security and privacy as welltoday a lot of us deal with security andprivacy by putting the owners back onusers we give them many settings andtoggles to improve those but in know AIfirst world we can learn and adapt anddo it thoughtfully for our users forexample if it's a notification for yourdoctor's appointment we need to treat itsensitively and differently than justtelling you when you need to startdriving towork so so we really excited by theshift and that's why we are heretoday we've been working on software andHardware together because that's thebest way to drive the shifts inComputing forward but we think we at aunique moment in time where we can bringa combination of AI and software andHardware to bring a differentperspective to solving problems forusers and we very confident about ourapproach here because we are theForefront of driving the shifts withAI 3 months ago at Google IO our GoogleAI teams announced a new approach calledautoml automl is just our machinesautomatically generating machinelearning models today these arehandcrafted by Machine learningscientists and literally only a fewthousands of scientists around the worldcan do this this design the number oflayers weight and connect the neuronsappropriately it's very hard to do wewant to democratize this we want tobring this to more people we want toenable hundreds of thousands ofdevelopers to be able to do it so we'vebeen working on this technology calledautoml and just in the past month for astandard task like image classificationunderstanding images our automl modelsare now not only more accurate than thebest human generated models but they aremore resource efficient so it's prettyamazing to see we are now taking it astep further let me talk about anotheruse case object deduction when we sayobject deduction just a fancy name forcomputers trying to delineate andunderstand images being able to drawbounding boxes and distinguish betweenall the ve Vehicles there scootersmopets motorcycles and even pick out thebike in front it has a lot of practicaluse cases the street view example forLegos Works based on object deductionGoogle lens which you'll hear aboutlater as well as our Photography inpixel uses object Direction this isreally hard to do the best humangenerated models we have only have a 39%accuracy but our autl models as of thepast couple of weeks have have reachedaround 43% accuracy and they'reconstantly getting better so the rate atwhich we are seeing progress with AI isamazing which is why we are reallyexcited about combining it with oursoftware and Hardware to bring ittogether for ourusers let me give you a concreteexample I was recently very inspired bythis tweet from a journalist who wasattending the Little League WorldSeries as you can see there are twolittle Leos here one from Dominican reppublic and the other from South Dakotaand they talking to each other usingGoogle translate it's a great examplebut I looked at it and I feel like wecould do a whole lot better Computingneeds to evolve where this happens in amore natural seamless and aconversational way and later todayyou'll get an early glimpse of how wecan push this experience further bythinking about AI software and Hardwaretogether I couldn't be more excited bythe direction our Hardware team istaking and approaching their work hereso to give you a lot more
