welcome to another glorious episode ofthe LAN Duke hour this episode is allabout reviewing ARCA OSI it is the newversion of os/2 I had the guy the mainguide the dude man from our cano a thecompany behind our coalesce on the showjust a week ago two weeks ago somethinglike that and he was nice enough to giveme a copy of our Co s and being someonewho used oh s - back when os/2 wasactually being developed and sold Ithink it I should really give it a runyou know it's a closed operating systembut I got to give it a run so I'm goingto do a full review of that today afterI do the review because this is a systemthat you can't download a trial versionof for licensing reasons when talk aboutthat at the moment but I feel like inorder to decide whether or not youactually want to buy it you'd have tosee it in action so I'm going to do akind of a hands-on walkthrough of whatit looks like how it works how itresponds what software is in it what itdoes all that sort of thing and we'll dothat after the review here so Paul partof this video so for those of you whoare listening to the audio podcast mypatreon supporters who get the audioversion the first part of the show willbe great the second production work orhardcore gaming I need a hardcore gaminglaptop it's just fantastic for that soI've been continuing to put it throughits paces you guys have given me a lotof suggestions for things you'd like meto try out most of which are try thisvarious distribution on it so I'm tryingto go through as many ascan and on Thursday of this week onLinux Thursday I will go ahead and tellyou basically the results of everythingso far I haven't really thrown a Linuxdistro out of the tech problems so staytuned for thatthis machine though I'll pick it up herebriefly it is is a big but not too bigbut pretty big massive gaming powerhouseof a machine I mean it's got its got agtx 1070 with 8 gigs of ram in it atleast this model does you can get aslightly lesser GPU as an option in itbut man the 1070 in here it just screamsfor a laptop I know I know for a desktopyou can you can do more you can get acouple of 1080s and sli those suckerstogether but for a laptop man man it'sit's hard to it's hard to get much moregaming performance than this anyway youcan pick this up over at system76 commsystem 76 is great because you know theysupport shows like this they they shiptheir systems with Linux right out ofthe gate I love that system 76 calmalright the review arca OS so i guess tostart with i was an os/2 user back inalmost a 1996maybe 1997 maybe 1995 as well and it wasa great system os/2 was originallydeveloped as a joint venture betweenboth IBM and Microsoft and they workedon it together things went badly theythe two companies just did not get alongeventually they split ways IBM took os/2with them and Microsoft went the WindowsNT route now I first started reallyusing less - with os/2 version 3so warp 3.0 is what they called it andit was it was like a revelation for meat that point I you know had seen youknow modern mackintoshes at that pointwhich were still predominantly black andwhite or at least the user interface wasvery grayscale they hadn't introducedcolor to the user interface veryvery dramatically yet this was beforeMac OS 8 even shipped many McIntosh'sthat were in schools and whatnot didn'tmultitask I played around with a coupleof friendsamigas but even though the amigas had alot of capability and they could do alot of multimedia and graphics and theywere really really amazing systems theyinterfaced on them still looked veryvery 1980s and Windows 3.1 was out butwhich I'd used on top of das and exhaust5 I want to say but it's Windows 3.1 Imean it's just not it's not an amazingsystem by itself right I mean it doescertain things well and it was popularfor the time and it was a nice windowingoperating system really graphical shelland but it had a lot of problems I had alot of shortcomings it was crazilyunstable it just really was and so inLinux though Linux and UNIX was greatLinux really didn't come into its ownfor a few years after that a couple ofyears later I got my first box copy ofSUSE Linux and then that sent me downthe Linux track slowly but surely butbut yeah os/2when it came out with warp 3 it lookedutilitarian but modern at least for thetime the the look and feel of itreminded me a lot of the common desktopenvironment of CDE for those of you whoare familiar with that which a lot ofthe old UNIX workstations shipped withand there's variants of for for Linuxand whatnot and it was a very versatilegood-looking system but on top of thatand much more importantly than that itwas crazy fast crazy stable reallyresource efficient and it ran not onlyos/2 command line applications and os/2GUI applications but it ran dosapplications wonderfully well and it ranWindows 3.1 applications and it ranall simultaneously all in a beautifullymultitasking super slick setup it wasreally really choice it was so fast andso amazing at that time the machine Ihad I'm trying to remember the exactspecs here was a 486 DX 266 so it's a 66megahertz 486 processor I had eightMeg's of RAM something like thatsomething in that ballparkand I was too flew on this it was anamazing machine and the fact that Icould run dos os/2 or Windows at thattime software was just amazing and thatincluded games so like if I wanted toplay doom under DOSno problem if I wanted to playcivilization 2 under Windows 3.1 noproblem they all ran at the same time infact on that old 486 I ran and this wasback when I was in high school right soI was a teenager and I had begged andpleaded my parents all I wanted for mybirthday or for any holiday was to get aphone line in my room that's all Iwanted and I didn't needed to be able tocall long distanceI wanted it to call BBS's and I wantedit so that I could run my own BBS Iwanted that so badly and so I ran my owndial-up BBS I finally got that when Iwas in high school and thanks parentsfor food bringing via phone line and andI ran a dial-up BBS in high school I hada little external u.s. robotics modemoriginally it was just a 2400 baud modemand then I got a newer 14-4 modem and Ihad that hooked up via via the littlecomport serial port and to the 486running os/2 and then inside of that Iran a DOS version of a BBS package in alittle window and so it was a singleline BBS people could call and playgames and legend to the red dragon andtrade Wars and all these sorts of thingsand they could call any timeday or night play these games so mymachine was running 24/7I was people dialing in and I could gosit down this machine and remember thisis a 66 megahertz machine with 8 8megabytes of RAM which is and I thinkthe hard drive was a oh it was not a bighard drive it was it was not a big harddrive I mean we're measuring inmegabytes not gigabytes here and I couldsit down while someone was logged in tomy BBS through my analog modem log intothe BBS locally and play games with themwhile having you know Microsoft Word orwhatever office suite I was running atthe time which usually was word backthen running in Windows 3.1 up off tothe side and behind it a couple of texteditors opened up file browser going onand everything end as just sitting therestagnant version of civilization 2 inthe background for when I want to goback to that all running at the sametime and yeah you get all those thingsrunning and on that old of a machine itstarts to slow down but not much itreally handled the multitasking well itwas an amazing machine so flash forwardIBM has abandoned os/2 essentially theyaren't providing updates to us too os/2is dead there was a effort to revive OSwho called EECOM station which I'm notreally sure how much success that had Inever I reached out to the company thatwas making that a few times it was likea version of os/2 with some some littledrivers but I never really heard muchfrom them it was just kind of just kindof didn't really go in a lot of placesbut then ARCA no way and company that Italked to just a couple of weeks backthey they just released Arco s and whatthey've done is they took os/2 which isa closed source operating system there'sno source available to this and theyhave begun patching it they replaced thebootloader entirely with something newthat they wrote so theI can boot properly on modern hardwarethat's pretty cool all by itself they'vealso included a lot of drivers so thatyou have better driver support on moremodern hardware they've updated thenetworking stack so you have a moremodern networking stack and they'vetaken the time to basically patch thekernelthey literally binary patch the kernelthey have no source code for this andyet they've reverse engineered thekernel with IBM's blessing which isremarkable and you know just to kind ofupdate it fix it enable more featuresthat sort of thing and more support formore amounts of RAM and whatnot and nowthe result is you have this new versionof os/2 that is able to run and supportmuch more modern hardware and they'vealso bundled it with a bunch of opensource software as well including apackage manager that is RPM based whichis very very cool they've got their ownpackage manager thing inside of the OSitself so you can install you knowyou've got Firefox a version of Firefoxit's not the latest version but it's notterribly old and just a bunch of otherstuff in there a lot of a lot of shellutilities so you can have you know SSHand everything else very very cool and Iinstalled it in a virtual machine I'vebeen kicking it around playing with itseeing what I could do with it and Igotta say I'm impressed it's it's areally really very adequate machine itis clearly not a modern operating systemand I should I should clarify that it isnot an operating system that is beingtop-to-bottom worked on in a nowadays bya large team and you can tell that bythe look and feel of it it feels likesomething from the 90s you know it feelslike you know if any of you are UNIXpeople or Linux people and you've usedold UNIX workstationsyou know like an old SGI or an oldSolaris box it's modern it'smultitasking it's stable it's fast ithas all the features that you reallyneed to do your work but it has that oldlook to it has that old motif look to itand that's really Arco s it isincredibly fast and powerful and youknow as I was using it I decided to putit through its paces I installed somedos games including doom because why nota Master of Orion Master of Magic theoriginal civilization SimCity 2000 abunch of DOS games no problems with anyof it worked greatsame with Windows 3.1 games over three1:1 games I only sold a couple of theminstalled sim tower because someonerequested will run sim tower yes it runssim tower very well and civilization toobecause civilization 2 was my favoriteWindows air Windows 3.1 era game I lovethat game so install that ran great noproblems whatsoever and I was reallyreally blown away by this and it is justso fast and it is so stable and it is sosmooth it just doesn't hiccupit just doesn't and that is reallyimpressiverealistically from a usabilitystandpoint there is very little thatcurrent versions of Mac OS Windows orLinux offers that are Co s does notthere's not really in terms of like yoursystem itself right I mean I cannot canhop on the Internet's I can multitasklike a dream it's it's great the thedownsides you're not going to be able touse more than 32 bits of address spacewhich means you're not gonna be able touse more than your three point somethingsomething something gigabytes of RAMeverything after that I guess can be putinto a ram disk which is kind of cool soif you have PAE you can have a big ramdisk so if you've got 16 gigs of ramyou're only going to be using you know alittle less than four gigs of it isactual ram and then the12 gigs going to become a 12 gigabyteram disk I think is how it works I neverreally fully tested out the RAM diskthing because I didn't really have muchneed for it but that's that's myunderstanding of how it worksand I think gram discs are very coolespecially if you want somethinghigh-performance and you don't want tobe reading and writing from the driveall the time so that's that's very coolwhat really blue blows me away is howgood of a retro gaming system are Co Sis and I know that's probably not whatit was intended for I know a lot ofcompanies rely on Argo as for likemanufacturing or financial institutionsor things like that they like the os/2and they use that and so this is a greattransition to a more modern andsupported system for them that's great Idon't do any of that stuff so for me Iwas really looking at it from the pointof view of a computer enthusiast kind ofguy who just wants to play around withstuff so I like playing old games so dasgame is Windows 3.1 games just perfectit is a great system for dos and windows3.1 retro emulation basically it is justincredibly nice to use and I I stoppedshort of recommending it for someone whowants to use it for that purpose simplybecause there's a price tag associatedwith it I believe it's about I thinkit's 99 bucks or something like that forthe personal Edition which is all youreally need but still popping down $100for an operating system when you'rerunning very old software does seem alittle bit pricy for most people it'sgreat it's totally great but it isn't itisn't the original experience because ifyou were running a Windows 3.1 game onjust Windows 3.1 it's a differentexperience than if you run it under ourcolas or os/2 it looks the game the sameto say the gameplays the same and allthat but you're not running it with justWindows it boots up into os/2 and youhave a different graphical experience sothe whole experience is differentbut it does run great and what I keptthinking about was if it weren't forLinux Linux wasn't here if I didn't havea Linux or FreeBSD or some other opensource or free software operating systemthat already accomplished all of myneeds I would absolutely use our Co sover Windows or Mac for my daily writingand web browsing I absolutely would itif my only choices were clothes orsystems I think I think I would go arcOS at least for like my my putzingsystem like my my carry it around withme and just do some typing and browsinglaptop agro s it's fast its small itslight on its feet it runs a lot ofdifferent kinds of software granted muchof it is very dated software but justthe same I mean you can grab a copy ofPhotoshop for Windows 3.1 I think thelast version was Photoshop version forsomething like that but it's still avery capable version of Photoshop youcan grab Microsoft Word and Excel andyou got you've got an actual arc OSnative versions of Libre Office Firefoxyou've got all the the shell terminalutilities it really is a powerful systemI'm impressed at what this company hasdone i I don't foresee me continuing touse it because I have Linux because Ihave much more powerful open source andfree software systems but if thoseweren't here man our goais would be verytempting it's a very interesting thingI'd be curious I know one or two of youat least have purchased this sincewatching the interview with the guybehind Arkham and I would be curious toknow what your thoughts are becausethat's been my experience so far as itreally is pretty fantastic now therewere problems specifically with Firefoxthe version of firefox that it shipswith which is really just not terriblystable in my experience i men should getto crash three or four times and iffirefox can be a bit of an unstablebeast to begin with but is reallyunstable in this in this version it'stotally usable if I load up you know onetab and go to a website and go to my webmail over coop now if I if I load up mymy next cloud web interface and all thatstuff all worked perfectly no problemsand it was a very usable thing I wasable to go to youtube and play youtubevideos but it was very slow um my guessis that something to do with thegraphics driver that I was using underVirtualBox my assumption is that itwould be faster if you were running iton native hardware or in a machine whereyou had better than like visa graphicsdrivers right so I think that's theproblem there so web browsing and livingonline in our class is totally doablebut it's a little crash II that wasreally my only complaint was Firefoxbeing crash e otherwise it's more of thefact that it's just a little bit of alearning curve with using OS 2 now allthat said let's do a little hands-onthing where let's talk about OS 2 aswe're using it I'm going to show youos/2 in all of its glory and you can seewhat it's like to use OS 2 are Co s inthe year 2017 like a decade more maybeafter IBM just ditched OS 2 entirelyit's specificprocessor is like you could customizeall of it and it's really fun todaydream because some of those VRdevelopment machines that they have arejust so powerful it's ridiculous andthey're just fun it's fun to imaginehaving them anyway Pogo Linux comthey're fantastic I had had them on theshow a couple of weeks back just to talkabout storage and stuff because I'm nota storage expert and they are so they doa lot of storage consulting for like bigpeople who are who are handling hugeamounts of data so if you need any inputon any of that stuff or you just want tofiddle around and daydream about bigworkstations and vieira workstationsPogo Linux calm there your guys alrightlet's dive into our two OS hands-onwelcome to our co s alright this is thisis the bass workstation this is thedesktop this is what it looks likepretty straightforward is running at 800by 600 right now nothing terribly fancycuz I don't have nice nice video driversetup on this through this virtualmachine but it'll work for the momentfirst thing you'll notice right off thebat virtual desktops that's that's kindof cool so we've got virtual desktopsthat works nicely down here we've gotyour little process meter so you can seehow well your machine is doing what yourCPU load is like we've got theequivalent of like a start button downhere and then up here we've got ourgeneral desktop let's start at the verytop what happens when you double clickcomputer do you get a list of drivesno you don't you get all sorts ofreasonssources so let's look at what we've gothere first start to start with itactually looks kind of nice I mean it'sit looked dated it looks like an oldLinux theme like a GT GT k2 theme or anold KDE theme or something like that butit looks nice it doesn't look doesn'tlook crummy it just looks you know alittle bit dated very 2d which honestlykind of appeals to me so let's pop openthe command prompt section first thingyou're going to notice lots and lots andlots of options for command prompts youcan do os/2 command prompts here we gopop this open right here you've got os/2and we get a version operating system toversion 4.5 all right cooland then let's go das a das sessionwindow herewhat is it report but it still reportsthe same version but this is a daswindow so you can run your dos commandsin here does that mem yep there we go sowe've got a lot of memory associatedwith that and then we can of course gowith the Windows OS to session in awindow and check this out boom noticehow it just popped right open because itwas already running this is full windowsright here so it's we can go like thisthis is the entire Windows desktopbasically running in a window asessentially an os/2 application is kindof what it's what it's a lot like thisis pretty much I left it kind of defaultin stock for this for those purposes sothis is kind of what you get when youinstall our go s so but here's theexperience of running this here so let'sopen up something cool with notepadwhere's notepad at there's classic oldWindows 3.1 notepad boom right here Louand you've got a folder I want to savethose changes no I do notalright let's close this out for aminute yeah I will end my window us tosession that's totally fine double clickit again BAM right up close it outyeah closes right away that's that'sjust kind of neat I mean it's Windows3.1 you don't expect it to be big andbloated and slow cuz it doesn't doesn'tdo a whole heck of a lot but the factthat it's there is really handy despitedespite its age and despite itsantiquity and its relative lack of powerwhen those 3.1 had a lot of software forit so it's cool that you can be able tograb all of that right nowall right and then of course we got thedrives so we've got all of our driveshere this is what it looks like tobrowse the drives using the file managerinside of OS 2 or in this case our go spretty straightforward you know it'sjust kind of this big hierarchical stylepretty pretty simple really and you canchange the views a little bit to twodifferent kinds of views and whatnot butthe the hierarchical little treestructure is pretty much the commoninstall and remove so this is just forinstalling and removing various thingswhich includes the Arkana a packagemanager which you notice has a yum iconwhich is kind of cool so it'sdownloading all the packages right nowbecause I have a full internetconnection so let's see what packagesare available using the arc I know apackage manager updating repository dataGoogle cool coolthinking about it crunching on it andthen we just got a list here's the onesI've got installed currently and here'sjust available ones if you go down thelist you can find a lot of stuff thatare close clamavi you know ffmpeg a GCCand you're going to find the the commonthings that you'd expect on a modernLinux desktop a lot of them here andthat's really really neat that you canjust go grab those things especiallyfunny that it's got a little like onthis is um on it so that's just kind ofgrooving all right let's see soselective and stuff and that for you soyou can do selective install stuff toinstall some device drivers there's nota whole lot of unified softwareinstallation drills - like there's nolike software store there's just a bunchof different ways to install things andgo look at our printers nothing terriblyfancy there cuz I don't have anyprinters hooked up it's like I don'teven think I have any printers here thatare currently but you know I do I have aKodak upstairs as not worth itI'm not going to try it out right nowhere's a start-up folder you want thingsto start up when you start your thingput it in here and it'll start up whenwhen arca startsand then system setup this is basicallyexactly what you would think it is solike this is where you set all yourdifferent Mouse properties you'll noticethe colored tabs along the top I waspretty common for us two applications tohave their settings panels broken outinto colored tabs which is kind of neatone thing os/2 is a lot like old KDE ifyou remember like KDE 3 5 and whatnotthe options that you have availablewe're just seemingly unlimited like itjust seemed like you open a preferencepanel and oh my gosh there's justpreferences everywhere and os/2 is a lotlike that you open up things and you'rejust going to find settings uponsettings upon settings and it just getsabsolutely crazyOh see what we can do with appearancehere so we can do we can check ourscheme palettes and we can set differentschemes and styles you know it's it'spretty straightforward really I mean allthis is is not too unusual but it doeslook fairly nice considering its agesame with icon themes ooh hybrid allright well that maybe we won't do thatat the moment but that's kind of cool sowe can do different ones different iconthemes ooh yes this right heretoes connect I apply that can I applythat apply the theme warp 3 yesapply those themes selected themes havebeen applied you'll need to reboot and Idon't want to reboot let's go back andlook at that for a second but this iswhat it looked like when I was when Iwas a young and this is what OS 2 lookedlike this is what they all were like anInternet folder they look at that andthen they got a little bit fancier alittle bit more isometric II and thenand then this is the current arcane noway style very very cool really allrightand then the RAM disk is for setting andcreating your own ram disk whichhonestly i think is a cool featureold Macintosh has had that a lot if youhad say you know32 Meg's of RAM and you wanted to run aversion of like door something like that off of a ramdiskto try and increase your performance youcould say create a 12 mega RAM disk andmove your entire game via drag-and-dropinto the RAM disk and run it straightfrom RAM as if it were on a drive whichjust crazy fast so OS who's got that inhere as well or arcing away I kind ofcop stop calling it os/2 hardwaremanager exactly what you'd think it wasexcept very nerdy looking just yourstraight-up hardware manager you look atall the different pieces of hardwareyou've got on start calling around andmanaging some of your your variousdevice drivers or what all right let'sclose this out I'll to actually closeout this as well include a commandprompts let's go look at some softwarenow now we go over here programs comeswith some games Klondike Solitaire nodevice driver found that's neatmy guess is it's probably a video thingyeah it still runs cool cool cool sothis is a old old Klondike Solitairegame pretty straightforward all rightlet's move past that because that's notwhat we're here fori installed software here we go allright so let's see we've got Thunderbirdand yeah that's a full version ofMozilla Thunderbird so you can use youremail that way which is pretty rad likeyou know it looks a little Firefoxbecause this is kind of an important onedouble-click on that Firefox is probablythe slowest application on hereeverything else just launches the secondyou start double-clicking on itand Mozilla Firefox is a little bitpokey well this is embarrassing itcrashed no kidding it crash it just doesthat sometimes let's go to London calmall right so pretty straightforwardworksnothing nothing too crazy let's seewhat's what's a good place to go tolet's go to reddit.com slash are slashLinux so you get a Linux subreddit it'sgoing to render fine you notice I meanthe resolution is kind of low so itagainst it but realistically it's itactually works just fine I really wassurprised at how well it worked overalland specifically it ships with whichversion of Firefox is this here 38.8 soyou know not the newest but honestly inmy opinion web browsers update toofrequently so I don't mind having a youknow year whatever old version ofFirefox that doesn't really bother meall right let's close these out becausenone of the rest of this stuff interestsme lot of utilities and here's somethingis kind of cool you can scan all yourutilities so it's what it's showing youhere is not just your dos utilities inyour OS 2 utility but your windowsutilities too so like in this case DOSeditor double click oh that didn't workout I just booked it let's let's exitthat all right well when I click tostart the DOS editor it actually resizedand ran ran my home machine as if itwere a DOS prompt which is very fancybut however I was running on VirtualBoxand it started moving the windows aroundand it screwed up the video editing sowe're back now let's just just assumeyou know what dust editor looks likelet's go over here the Windows 3.1control panel and then boom and noticethat it's a Windows 3.1 app the controlpanel running exactly alongside ls2applications the presentation managerapplications that's what they call theapplications in os/2 that are GUI the PMpresentation managerokay well I kind of blew everything upwhen I launched the DOS editor theoperating system handled it fine butwhat it did is it actually resized myscreen and went full screen in a dashsession and then VirtualBox moved to aseparate spot on my screen and got allwiggity whack 'ti so let's just come onback here and not double click on theone that says da sided because it wasgrow a video up but let's see what wecan do here have some of these otherones if you load up the control panelfor instance this control panel here isthe Windows 3.1 control panel so you canlaunch that directly from you know therest of your os/2 sessions it reallytreats Windows 3 one apps dos apps andos/2 apps is off they're all equalcitizens and you can just use theminteroperable and that's really reallykind of neat I mean here's the oldcharacter map that old friggin charactermap a stupid old character map and itworks just fine and then here's an os/2text editor and if you really want to gocrazy you can find like the version anotepad for Windows 3.1 to run at thesame time they offer basically the samefunctionality but there you have it thisis this is pretty much what it is oh youknow what before we're done here let'sgo down here and look at this all rightthe little arca no way Arco LS buttondown at the bottom the launcher stylebutton it literally is a mirror to whatis on the desktop so at the top it justthis is your desktop and then all thoseicons we were clicking on up there wecan click on the basically menu-drivenversion of it so whatever's in those iswhat we got right here pretty prettystraightforward and then we can you knowlock the system run run commandswhatever we want to do and when we saywe want to run commands we can tell ithow to run it for instance if it's aWindows command we can run it inenhanced mode we can run it as aseparate windows session that's kind ofcoolthink about that for a second so you canlaunch a separate windows session to runit just in case of you know issues youcan start at minimize you can make itfullscreen by default you can close thewindow and you just you can change yourworking directories let's dowas really all about customizability inthat way and Arco s is really nodifferent than that let's pull up theseup yeah so by default it gives you youknow TFTP telnet that sort of thing allright in here it's missing ssh bydefault but you can grab that from thepackage manager so that's pretty much itthis is this is our coalesce this iswhat it looks like this is what it feelslike it's it's a really prettystraightforward system I I really dokind of like it it's it's quality it'sit's not bad I I have no I have nothingbad to say about it other than the factthat it's closed source but that's
