welcome to the next episode of OSfirst-timerour next operating system to try out isnext step 3.3 released in 1995 next stepwas an object orientated multitaskingoperating system developed by a nextcomputer to run on computers such as thenext cube this version was the lastversion release of next step before theyreleased their next operating systemcalled open step on the 4th of February1997 Apple acquired next for 429 milliondollars and used the open step operatingsystem as the basis for Mac OS 10 pointo cheetah to replace Mac OS system 9 oand just beyond formation the initialversion 1.0 of next step which releasedin 1989 anyway now that next step isbooted the next step is to tell me thetimeah easy 12:49 am does that look prettynice no it's not really that yeah yeahI'm like ok how is the time display doesthat look better than most operatingsystems well it catches your eyesstraight away and it's very much like aclock yeah remembering this is 1995 okso this is in comparison to your Windows95 also released in not 1995 had thesame kind of grayish look so all thewindows I had this grey look I don'tknow it must have been the thing for the90s but it actually had a Start menuwhere all your programs were and it haddesktop iconsthis doesn't have desktop icons yeahhere just it has the dock and this isthe next step dock and as you can seeyou can actually grab this and slide itdown to make it go away if you don'twant it and slide it up see up that'sthe next step dock which was built uponin Mac OS 10 and it's the same thingalthough it's just been moved from thetop to the bottom I tell you what thislooks very much like a cartoon and thisme thingI'm assuming that's the equivalent of mycomputer that reminds me of MicrosoftBob with their cold concept of the househouse being a computer and everythingyes that's right and why would you havea methen another me there well what isactually happening is my computer isactually here that's the equivalent ofmy computer any my computer you've gotme next admin next apps next developerand next library okay well before youexplain any more things up yeah you'vegot to do stuff okay but I'm justcomparing the start menu of Windows 95is down here and yet with work spacewhich I'm assuming is the next step menuit's um it's already got everythingthere but like with the menu you have toclick on it before it pops up this isnot what you would call a start menuworkspace with all of that if not aStart menu okay well to me it gives theimpression of it and if I was comparingthis to Windows 95 I would have to sayWindows 95 would probably win although Ido like the format of how the clock isthere yeah and remembering that is adock and you can put whatever programsyou want on it okay anyway the next taskis write safe and create a text documentit's actually write save and open fileopen this folder new folder well theseare talking about folders I want toactually write something text you knownot the folder so that confuses me editmaybe I'm editing something no it's notletting me disk youwindows what's this it's you can openwindows in this no no completely anincompatible edit hope Open Sesame hometo what that doesOh text X viewer I know what that isretexe latex takes plane or maybe thisis it a latex did she said like exit thetop what some of these texts are um soat the bottom there you've got the wordsT X you and this talk okay wellI'm assuming this is it and you justmove it to it so it's in better viewyeah I can't get rid of that thing andI'll way to see let me get rid of thedock thing there we go now we can havethat up there that'll do okay openingtext now to sayI wonder what happens in time okay maybeit saves it automatically what's thisoh my things gone you minimized it tothe dock at the bottom see so that'salmost that's like your taskbar but it'sbig icons it's almost like Windows 7instead of just words yeah and the X haslost its middle bit anyway um file Iwonder if it'll say say where would youlike to say but just in me just in meyeah that'll do just called it doc therewe go almost now Marissa programs can Iget rid of this thing how do you do lookat all the words on that thing here infofile edit format windows print serviceshide quit I'll quit yes I could havedone it okay fair enough we'll click itwell haven't I already quilt quit quitno you haven'tNo Oh what now now let's quit but it'screated all these other known this it'slike okay so you know how at the top ofthe screen usually on word documentstuff you've got you would have likefile edit and all that yeah instead ofthe thing across the top of each windowit's along the side on this thing rightwhere did you save the docking to me soclick double-click me and there's allthere it is that's the obviously waterin thatI've got it I found it me yeah I cantastic so was that easy or hard a littlebit of fiddling around but I dideventually do it yeah the next task iscalculate 129 plus 342 and you've got 20secondsokay I'll assume it would be in apps umnothing in apps no I'll give you a cluehe bored this is a clue apps doesn'tcontain anything but a folder callednext ups does contain stuff ten secondsokay where's calculator oh no I don'tknow how to fall down on here that's upprint terminal always it good it's nocalculatorit affects graph preference three twoonebina got okay by default this operatingsystem doesn't appear to have acalculator I've searched the web for onehour searching for a calculator butthere is a way to do calculations andyou can actually do this same thing thissame method to do calculations have beencarried out in Mac OS 10 yes so this iswhat you can do you can go to terminaldot app and this is where you dotext-based commands and from in hereit's almost like the Linux terminal orthe UM Windows command prompt yeah andwhat you do from there is you type in BCso you can do the same thing on Mac PCPC press ENTER now I'll just be sixteenDC I don't know what it stands for butit allows you to do calculations okay sowith that time typing BC you can't docalculations so the calculation I wantyou to do is it means bloody calculationbloody bloody calculator okay okaybloody calculate one hundred and twentynine plus three hundred and forty-twoplus I'm assuming the plus is the normalplus yeah yep three hundred forty-twoyears something like that yepum and the equal sign and their enterclue you don't press equals ah there itdid it okay good 471 okay what do youthink about that knowing that you canjust download a calculator get oneoffered warmI'd rather download a calculator but ifit's yeah it is so long yeah anyway yeahit can't be okay or you can make yourown calculator using the next step atbuilder or whatever you call it okayokay so the next step is to customizethe look of your computer you I've triedsearch the web for another hour I'mlooking how to do this you can't changethe desktop background okay from thesources that I've found so that purplecolor has to stay or whatever color itis but you can change the icon spacingso see this like spacing between I thinkthat's quite big you can actually makethat smaller or you can make the wordsbit small stuff like that preferences OhNoso how would you do that okay here's aquick clue for you you simply go up overhere to info then to preferences can youguess from here what you'll do you wantto change the icon spacingmy family temple on earth is that that'sa different thing you have to go backagain um I wouldn't have a clue so thisis all the preferences for the darkshelf browser icon view okay maybe it'sthat tile whitso that's the current tile with how doyou want to change it so how would youmake it smaller I wouldn't have a clueno idea no grub the edge put togetherand then if you look now they're muchcloser together oh I see look I wouldnever have guessed that ok now I'll giveyou something easier okay so give youthe task of adding a program to the dockso let's just say you thought okay I useconfigure a lot not that you really dobut let's say you wanted to use this alot yeah how would you add that to thedock well I'm assuming you left you goon it you left-click it you go to thespace there and drop it yeahit is there okay now you remove aprogram but let me just see it looksfull up at the moment so just oh oh welloh you remove it I'm guessing but what Iwant to do is try and I'm wondering howyou can add more to what why does it letme just add something else to it um thisthingalthough the apple dock would actuallyopen up so if you were to grab this andput it there these apps we go up here wego here some brick okay so if I movethat one there wait I can't even movethat one there naturally doesn't want tomovethere we go okay that one went there andthen I could put it you can move theones that have see these three littledots those ones can move but that onescan't move it doesn't have those threelittle dots all I see in that onecountless I try it actually no yeah yeahokay I understandso you've got limited but this is a verylow screen resolution you can actuallyhave a higher screen resolution I'll andthat's been by the way yeah at thebottom but you can actually have a muchhigher screen resolution which meansthis dock would be a bit small on thescreen and you'd have a lot more spaceyeah okay this is actually theresolution you're looking at is 640 by480 just out of interest she couldpossibly make these smaller and then youcould add more on the channel whichwould which is the equivalent ofchanging the screen resolution okay yeahso if you have a higher screenresolution there's more pixels on thescreen with more pixels there's morespace but everything's slightly smallerokay okay the last task is to explorethe operating system yourself but whatI'm going to give you is I'm just goingto show you what's up here demo and youcan explore some of those apps okay theycome with it by the next time look forwhat that isplease use bogus to report softwareproblems oh okay that's that yeah do youwant to see Microsoft yeah yeah I seeokay quit billiard app okay I got alittle bit is it good for 1995 ah wellthis particular one looks alrightanything is heavier some less scratchmaybe um what what we could do is thisdoc looks like it's in the way so we'lljust move this doc down oh there's thething yeah okay Oh way to say do youhave toyou can't get it with but it was gas arethere we go yeah there we go worked itout ah look at that that's awfulit doesn't actually draw the movement itjust it just processes it thinks okaythis forward here and then it's likeokay that's me I'm gonna quit it thatwasn't very good I don't want to exploreany more of these things I just want tohave a look at the actual operatingsystem but I can't get out of it there'sno way cuz I'm so used to a nextjust don't know how to get out okay soto close this info workspace this muststay openoh so that or you can minimize it but itmust be an open program all the time atthe bottom there okay so what are yougonna do now ahyou kind of need workspace to doanything okay well I've just bought thedock back again you can do emails toohow do you think you do emails look atthe dock that thing yeah yeah aninteresting feature on the email whatinternet system it useswhat happens is how do all your emailsyou that's an email there and then theemail appears down here so all youremails will appear in that little thingand then you click it and it appearshere so that's how the emails workwhat's the actual internet browser onthis scene um well you can try and findit you don't even know if you're sayingthat well I wasn't really going to getyou to use the Internetokay well let's see out of you and mewho can find the internet first fineInternet no that's the situating me welllook it's in the email Oh does it have abit like a search bar anyway serviceswell I wouldn't know that looks likethat's nicethis one looks like it's trying to fixthe internet we want to actually launchit local are that's connecting to likefax machines and all that okay but yeahI don't know where the internet browseris in this but I do know that next stepdevelop world wide web which is actuallywhat WWN for and it was the world'sfirst web browser you had funny thing Inever knew what www okay anyway turn offthe computeryeah given up looking for the internetlike I originally thought it withWebster so I thought all that web theinternet but Webster is just adictionaryoh it's stuff I used to have an oldWebster oh is that what Western Force ofWebster was brand of a dictionary yeahokay well I didn't know that because I'mnot really in the dictionary here am iI'm in the Google era yeah okay look Ido I give up on the Internet let's havea look logout power off yeahthere we gothere we go what do you think of nextstep I don't like next step okay inParis until Windows 95 I think windows95 is better this is quite confusing inmy opinion it's got more things on itthan what you actually need and but itis really even have a calculator no Iknow but what I'm just saying it had awhole step of stuff that you didn't usehow button I don't know seeing watch itwas there to confuse you so you justthink it had a messy interface yeah itwas definitely cluttered because youcouldn't even get rid of that thing thatwas in the middle and you could minimizeit but you said you could never close itI denied it I didn't like it I can'treally put words to it but I didn'treally like it being actually life wasthe clock format there we go okay umwhat about the doctor that looked niceI think the Mac Doc's are better thanthat and shouldn't have fit and morepractical as well but of course this wasthe variety neither Mac built upon sowell Mac obviously thought it was a goodoperating system since they bought itout and then built upon the dock and allthat sort of stuff that in fact SteveJobs had multiple demonstrations of itand looked at it quite a few times asvideos of Steve Jobs trying this onYouTube just like you trying it but hehas a more professional approach but hereally loved this because it had in facthe isn't quote from Steve Jobs heactually said I want to show you whatit's like to work in the next computer'sproductivity environment an environmentthat has much much better networking inPCs and Macs and much much betterproductivity apps that let people worktogether as groups and really increasestheir group productivity andcollaboration all right he said it wasbetter than he's only system I can't Ijust can't understandbecause as far as I'm concerned windowswas uncluttered it had an actual menuwhich was logical it had little icons onthe and the rest the desktop was all I'mcluttered where is this there's bits allover there's a dock over there there's athing here which you say isn't a menubut to me looks like a menu then youhave a me a picture of a house whichreminds me of Microsoft Bob andlivestock bob was 1995 - yeah there wego now I'm I don't like this is one thatI can honestly say I don't like well ifit was 1995 and I just tried this nextstep 3.3 my next step would be to justinstall windows 95 isn't that bad yeah Ididn't like it
