about computers in a dailynewspaper and John Berman called and hesaid we'd like you to introduce thepeople who are going to be doing thedemonstrations for Windows NT and os/2and he likened it to a World WrestlingFederation match so the people down infront you may be splattered with bloodby the end of this but but it should bevery interesting this this is indeed asJohn said your this is history here whenthe next century dawns you may notactually have Windows NT or os/2specifically on your machine but it'sgoing to be something like it because32-bit operating system it exactly to beWindows NT you know as to but but it'sgoing to be it's going to be 32 or 64 or120 i'm een it's only going to getbigger it's only going to get morepowerful and and it's only going to getfriendlier the interesting thing is whathas happened here has changed thesecompanies at Comdex you had Bill Gatesin a suit and you had Jim Cannavino in ared sports shirt and I noticed tonightthe Microsoft guys are in suits and tiesand the guy who's going to demonstrateos/2 isn't a red sports shirtanytime you can get IBM out of thosewhite shirts at any rate this is this isan important night and this is a glimpseinto the future and watch very carefullybecause I know some of you people hereare going to be making decisions as towhat kind of as to which way you'regoing to go and you're going to launchyour company off on a direction that'sthat is toward the 21st century thefirst person right who won the corn tossand who will be going to the mat firstis Doug Davis of Microsoft he'll bedemonstrating Windows NT and we havewith IBM Dave Barnes looking natty andmaroon over here and sit back relax andenjoy it as Clayton Williams said andand I'm sure and I'm sure that this isgoing to be a lot of fun thank youyeah at least I don't have a blue suiton that's that's one thing good about itmy name is Doug Davis I've been withMicrosoft for the last three years now Iused to sell os/2 now I sell windows andWindows NT we're going to talk aboutstart off the presentation I'm going totalk about what's going on with WindowsTNT where it is today hopefully we'llget down in some of the architecturalaspects of Windows NT you'll see why wefeel it's a superior product to otheroperating systems on the market and lastwe'll get into a demo I can't see me athands but I can see a lot of how manypeople are out there running Windows 3 1or Windows today a lot of people ok howmany people got there bill gates weddinginvitation ok but I broken a rulealready I'm sorry uh last Monday the24th Bill Gates announced Windows NTaccom decks I was a very low keyannouncement will simulcast to about 50cities for Microsoft anyway that'spretty big event and the presentation hedid was very low-key it wasn't a lot ofglitz what any dancers any song song oranything like that but he should thepurpose of the presentation would showthe power of NT and show that that themarket has been needing something likethat I know you've probably seen thisarticle in the and some of the traderags recentlyempty fortunately has generated a lot ofinterest even though it was anunannounced product it's a lot of ourcompetitors had started positioningagainst NT before they're released andthis articles been running for quite awhile they're not their only competitorthough that's got an T in mind Sun isalso with their Sun select productfocuses on NT a lot of people aregetting microsoft credit for bringingthe rest of the industry together tocreate some standards I don't knowwhether that's out of fear survival I'mnot sure one person or one company justcan't deliver an operating system makeit successful it has to be a combinationof a lot of things you have to depend onsoftware developers you have to havesolution providers or people who deliversolutions in large corporate customersof course you have to have a companythat has the vision to do it and youalso have to have hardware vendors andthey all have to work together and wekind of feel that Windows NT makes allthe puzzles fit together puzzle piecesfit together from a Microsoftperspective you'll see a lot of thingsin the press about where NT ispositioned but from just a marketingstandpoint and where we feel it's goingessentially we feel it's the mostpowerful client server a desktop orserver on the market today on the marketthat's announced product well it willget to that it's only one piece of afamily though I mean there were a lot ofpeople that are running when there'sthree one today a lot of people stilluse das but but essentially Windows NTit fills out a family of operatingsystems we start off with the low endyou can run Windows today on pin systemslaptop systems as we move up the chainof hardware you see we go to Intel basedworkstations that involves two riskbased workstations and eventuallysymmetric multiprocessing super serversand the intention from Microsoft is tohave an operating system that runs onall of those environments so that from auser perspective from a developmentperspective you have a common interfaceyou have common API set and you have allthe common things that make it easy todevelop and deliver on any of thoseplatforms now let's talk about theWindows NT 2 architecture it's a it wasdesigned by David Cutler essentially aDavid Cutler was the father or chiefarchitect for VMs for Dec and when hecame to Microsoft in 1980 a his missionwas to build the most powerful PCoperating system now that was os/2 whenhe came and a lot of people forget thatwhen when we first went into thisproject the whole operating system hasexisted today was os/2 3.0 and I canpull back slides from way back then andsee that the same feature set that's inWindows NT today was in os/2 3.0 featureset but essentially it's a modular andlayered architecture and we're doing alittle more detail on that itsclient-server in its implementation andyou'll see how that applies in a secondto its portable very important as wemove through enterprise architecturesand and get into new advances in chiptechnologies that you able to port youroperating system easily easy as hardwarevendors come up with new technologieswhen in doesn't when when in the WindowsNT will be released it will run on theIntel 43 to 646 Pentium architectures itwill also run on the mips r4000 familyof processors and the dec alpha familyof processors so NT will be an operatingsystem that spans multiple processorsand it's also was designed from theground up to be symmetricmultiprocessing and essentially whatthat is for the user is the ability tothrow in a new processor into theirmachine and get linear performanceincreases so that if I determine thatI'm CPU bound if my machine supports itI put another processor in that machineand lo and behold my machine gets fasternow this is real important when we'retalking about large computing andenterprise environments where I needscalabilityto where I can deliver a solution andthen as I outgrow that solution I don'tnecessarily my system is not outgrown Iadd processors and memory to it now as abase component of the entityarchitecture are protected subsystemsnow there's two different types ofprotected subsystems in NT one of thoseis environmental subsystems and that'swhere we have the windows 32 programmingenvironment we have the DOS programmingenvironment where you can run dossedapplications you can also run Windows16-bit applications you can run POSIXone based applications you can also runcharacter based iOS to character basedapplications and those are the os/216-bit applications now the purpose ofthe os/2 subsystem is essentially togive users the ability to our time sothat they can take their OS to serverbased applications and move those to NTover time what we found in a lot of os/2development was server based and therewere a lot of client-server applicationsdeveloped under os/2 so we needed asubsystem that would allow the users tomove and migrate to a high-end operatingsystem and the last one is a integralsecurity security is very important tothe base product and is essentially notsomething that was bolted in orarchitected in it was architected fromthe ground up to be C to secure and whatthat is is a government specification itsets a security level now here's agraphical view of the NT architectureand let me just take it from across thetop you have your os/2 16-bitapplications very positive Kate it's aPOSIX applications the windows 32 ms-dosand windows 16 and these all run andwhat's referred to as user mode thereare two modes and NT used I know a lotof people have ever heard of six bringzero vs. ring three for example thatarchitecture doesn't exist in risk basedprocessors everything is divided intotwo pieces either youare are the colonel or privilege modeall subsystems and applications run andwhat's referred to as the user mode andas we move down the colonel side ofthings we can see that the hardware isat the very bottom we have this littlepiece of code here called how it's agood choice I know it really wasn'tmeant to do that but it's referred to asthe hardware abstraction layer and whatthat does is isolates NT from anyhardware specific components for examplethere's no standard today in the PCindustry on delivering multi processingmachines if you talk to ast compact DellWyse all these people they're deliveringmulti processing systems they're notdesigning them exactly the same it's nota golden age of PC compatibility that weonce realized so we needed a softwareisolation layer that we could isolatethose machines from the operating systemand run NT on those very seamlessly andthat's where the hardware abstractionlayer came from the kernel the big piecedown here the kernel in int only 40kbelieve it or not the the use of memoryNT is mainly to run a protected modesubsystems and some of the other cachingmechanisms but the kernel is very smallfor chisholm microkernel you havedifferent subsystems on top differentobject layers on top of that I'm notgoing to detail on each one of them butwe have caches in a process manager andessentially the i/o systems and thenetwork device drivers about that thesystem itself contains about 4 millionlines of code the kernel itself I saidis 40k a 95 percent of it is written inC and only 5% of it's written inassembler that makes it extremely easyto port to different architectures nowwe talked about symmetricmultiprocessing and what that means wellI'm going to look at this is a sampleapplication you could have pulled thisout of any UNIX vendors symmetricmultiprocessing that's really where yousymmetric multiprocessing started butyou have a process that is essentiallybound to each CPU in the machineand that's and that can be veryhigh-performance but it there are someproblems with it first of all everybodycommunicates to the shared memory whichis not the most efficient way to do itthe application essentially has to playoperating system it has to understandwhen things are coming into focus comingout of focus there's a lot of overheadthat people have to build into theirapplications to make them multiprocessing aware well within the WindowsNT we can take a different approach andlet's just talk about one of theproducts from Microsoft that sequelserver for NT in that thing we have inthat program we only have essentiallyone process and we break them intomultiple threads or are smallerprocesses and we let the operatingsystem handle the scheduling of thoseprocesses across the different CPUsthat's a lot more efficient we let theoperating system handle it there's not alot of complexity that we have to buildinto our code it's essentially allhandled by the operating system now wefeel that NT is a powerful platform forbuilding solutions now there's a it's areliable architecture a poorly behavedapplication cannot crash the system andwe talked about how the application andtheir subsystems run the user mode at notime does an application in Windows NTlink into any system memory somethingthat other operating systems will letyou do that can't happen any Windows NTso an application cannot crash thesystem we have D synchronized inputqueues this is very important it soundsvery technical but what essentially itmeans is that I'm not limited by whatwhatever tasks I'm doing to go doanother operation right now in os/2 andwindows if I clicked on the file managerto do a drive search I wait to do adrive search because essentially thesystem is processing input Windows andos/2 today share what's referred to as asingle message queue and what that meansis that all the messages that are passedthrough the system pass through oneplace an NT every applicationhas her own unique queue so that cannothappen we talked about security a littlebit it's integrated into the system itwas architected in and we have upssupport that's built into the productand last we have we support asynchronousi/o which is a really high speed way ofwriting code the file system at NT isnew we had to develop a new system forone reason that being that to be secureand to be a government level securitythe so file systems that are out theretoday don't support the kind of accesscontrol the structures that you need fora high in operating system will supportvery large Diskin filesI think they've calculated that NT willsupport volumes up to 184 terabytesnow that's a volume size and you canhave multiple volumes in the system so Idon't think we're going to be runningout of file size limitations for a longtimewe have long filenames and we also oughtto generate 8.3 names which is very veryuseful if you have users that areaccessing NT as a server if they're on adas machine they see their old 8.3 nameyou can still use a long file name andthe file names are are linked togetherwe have Unicode support which is veryimportant for international market we dotransaction logging for quick recoverywhat this does is if the file systemever goes down you have to reboot todayyou you essentially wait on check diskto check your file system see if it'sokay well imagine running check disk on184 terabyte volume size we would behere for a very very long time waitingLynette to complete so with transactionrecording of the processes that takeplace in the file system we can recoververy large volumes in seconds instead ofhours and lasts the file system itselfis built for 64-bit access all fileoffsets are 64-bit so that's why we getsuch a large size out of the file systemand now preserves your existinginvestment in ms-dos applications youcan run your ms-dos applications as itexists today you can run multiple ms-dosapplications we'll show you that duringthe demo anything this ms-dos 5compatible will operate in thisenvironment you can do full screen orwindow taxes up to you just like inWindows and you can also copy and pasteto the clipboard very seamless you canpreserve your investment in Windowsapplications by running your existing16-bit applications essentially you cancopy/paste dde olá between 16-bit and32-bit applications the windows 3-1 appsrun as they're designed to and that's torun in in the same memory addressWindows NT applications are 32-bitapplications running they're a separatememory address when the 16-bitapplications run in a single addressspace performance is comparable orcomparable to Windows 3.1 user will notnotice the difference between running aWindows application under NT are runningit under Windows 31 and last it's binarycompatible you can run your Windows16-bit applications on either the Intelplatforms are any of the risk basedplatforms yes yes enhance mode 32-bitapplications for Windows NT and windows3.1 as part of the Developers Conferencelast July we released a specificationknown as Windows 32 S which is a subsetthe subset of the windows 32 bit API settoday you can under windows NT you canrun a Windows 32 bit S application underin Windows NT as a native 32-bitapplication or run it as a 16-bit our32-bit application under Windows 16 theway this is accomplished is throughrunning virtual device drivers on top ofWindows 3-1 that's something that always- cannot do todayWindows NT has built-in 3.1 has built-innetworking essentially in a base NT boxyou have an unlimited file and printserver illness port an unlimited numberof user connections however meaning youfeel that you will let on your machinein a networked environment it's protocolindependent you can run IP x tcp/ip netblue OSI any protocol you select thethree protocols in the product will be anet booyah or a net BioSpace protocolTCP IP and DLC on the data link controlprotocol used to do 3270 accessit's a superset of workgroup for WindowsI know a lot of you were here probablyin February I guess it was when we didthe demo of Windows workgroup it has thesame features net dde chat all that'sbuilt into it final print easy file andprinter sharing for the user and themail and schedule plus are asapplications is all are also built intothe system we have an OS FDC ecompatible RPC now that's a lot ofletters let me tell you what that meansos F is a is a stand as a as a bodyworking on delivering of an operatingsystem they have a remote procedure callmechanism which allows two machines totalk to each other and it's referred toas a remote procedure call all of theremote procedure calls and NT are DCEcompliant what that really means is thatfrom another DCE environment whateverthat might be to an NT environment wecan share information our connecteddatabases are write distributedapplications its network independent andit's protocol independent and reallysimplifies your development now as faras connectivity to UNIX environments wesupport POSIX dot one which is aprogramming it's a governmentprogramming standard we do X Windowsemulation this was demonstrated atWindows worldlast month we also support Windowssockets and RPC mechanisms as far asnetwork integration I stated alreadythat tcp/ip is included in the boxhave an svr for compatible streamsenvironment and NFS our network filesystem as it's referred to is alsoavailable from NT from a third party nowWindows NT was built more for just inusers it was built friend manageabilityvery important in large computingenvironments will support both net viewand SNMP which are mainframe or UNIXbased consoles to do network managementright out of the boxwill we have utilities and NT that arealready meant for remote management forexample as a remote administrator I canchange the configuration of an NTmachine I can limit a user's options onan empty machine to where they can't canchange this configuration I can monitorits performance I can do remote backupseverything that I would think of doingat the desktop as a land administratoror network operator I can do remotelynow using Windows NT I already said wesupport net view and SNMP as far as netwith you reporting you can map any NTgenerated event which is anything thathappens in the system can generate a netview alert so that from a host basedsystem you can submit commands to NTsystems or take alerts to NT systems asfar as SNMP will support the standardarchitectures for Lib 1 and mid 2 andit's all extensible now there's aseparate product from the base productfor NT and it's referred to as NTadvanced services we have centralizedadministration so that you have one yearuser and count and logon throughout yourenterprise we have a remote accessserver that's included in the productthis gives you the ability to dial-upasynchronously and connects an NTmachine as if you were connected to thenetworkwe support McIntosh's as clients forthis environment and we've also added infor hands fault tolerance in thisproduct will support file replicationdis marrying dis duplexing and raid 5 insoftware sono need to buy specialized hardware todo things like dis striping and disstriping with parity that can all bedone in software now in NT as far aspricing goes on NT the NT full packageproduct is for 95 upgrade from das orWindows or os/2 is to 95 the AdvancedServer product not there's some thingsto consider here like having the anunlimited file and print server rolewindows and Novell into one box andessentially try to figure out what thatwould costWindows NT advanced server product is -9 29.95 and an introductory price rightnow is 14.95 and of course the upgradefrom the land manager is 595 now I putthis little chart together when itinitially they asked me to do thispresentation I said great I get to goshow Windows NT 2 how a PC and they saidwell IBM's gonna be there with os/2 andI'm like why I didn't understand thatquestion you know I didn't say one thingI forgot I forgot to bring it up to meyou might see the Borg the Borg is herecover on the IBM magazine who's the Borgin this instance I couldn't figure thatout for some reason anyway I kind ofbreak this down a little bit have alittle fun here between Windows NT andos/2 2.1 now Microsoft feels it to be avery advanced desktop operating systemthere's certain requirements that youhave to fill of course IBM and os/2 andwindows NT satisfy the majority of thesethose being run dos applications runWindows 16-bit applications run 32-bitGUI applications you can also run POSIXapplications in Windows NT you cannot dothat today in os/2 as far as pre-emptivemultitasking yes multi-threading for32-bit applications us separate addressbase for applications yesseparate message queues for applicationsthat's what I talked about earlier aboutdecentdo synchronous asynchronous act inputqueues we do it they don'twe're portable to risk that they're notrunning on risks right now they may demoit up here I hope I'd like to see it youhave symmetric multiprocessing supportc2 level security built-in file andprinter sharing yes there no built-inemail and scheduling yet has to know dotbuilt-in remote administration tools youhas to know they do do good SNA supportso do we and tcp/ip is a protocolincluded yes and no again now let's talkabout some of the other things going onwith Windows NT Microsoft just announcedthat we're in the middle of a researchproject with several leading computeruniversities and giving them the WindowsNT source code those being brownCarnegie MIT California BerkeleyUniversity of Washington some of thestandard research institutes the purposehere is to open up in T to theseenvironments and let people add value toit without necessarily creating newoperating systems something thathappened to UNIX to hope that we canavoid now where do we go from herewell for those of you running Windowsthat don't upgrade to Windows NT I doubtthat probably a few of you out there butanyway there'll be a version of Windowsin the future and it's referred to asChicago in the press anyway that's thecode name internally in Microsoft and ofcourse Windows NT users will move to aproduct referred to as Cairo and I wantto concentrate on that product for asecond now what do we get to in thisenvironment well we're a long way fromthere right now we're probably at 2years I'm seeing this product in themarket we'll probably go into betasometime late this year but essentiallythe things that we add are our thingsour services on top of a good foundationwe have a good Multi multi sorrymicrokernel architecture are already inplace we have the symmetricmultiprocessing and security already inplace so what do we add on to that wellwe add things like an object-orientedfile system to where file namesessentially become irrelevant in thisenvironment you store data and youretrieve data you do context instantinstances and rich indexing so that Ican search for all documents on my harddrive that had the the word view in itor at or the whatever it's all indexedin context index we also add things likeremote activation and replication theseare really get into a high-endobject-oriented type of system we haddistributed management and security thisbeing based on a lot of the work done byMIT having did with Kerberos and lastwere based on Ola 2.0 and Windows 32well that pretty much wraps up my partof the presentation now we're gonna getto a little bit of the demo this isgiving an example of what I'm runninghere I have a compact 46 C it's a 66 46processor the first thing you'll noticethat windows prompts me for a logonevery user in the system has to have anaccount can you not hear mebaby well anyway the first thing you'llnotice that the user has to log onwhenever I've gone away from the systemit will ask me to reinitiate the logonsequence which is ultra can control thelead every time you go to the systemyou'll see it all controlled deletepiece to it and I have to enter apassword and Joe left me the password isgee I think it istryokay third time's a charmit's that case-sensitive pastoral linefirst thing I kind of open up firstthing you'll notice is the cursor if youlook real close with the person we'veadded something 2nt it's referred to asanimated cursors and what I'd like to dois change it to my favorite animatedcursor will do brows oops and we havethe horse as the cursor Ithe other big thing that's blurring andNT is it it looks just like windows 3one I did a demo did the demo at theConvention Center last February's to meit's very hard to demo NT because I meana majority of people out there arerunning Windows today and I can tell youthat it has a GUI interface and it hasdrag-and-drop and lets you setup programgroups but you know all thatit's just windows 3-1 some of the thingsthat are unique about NT talk about forexample of the file system the filesystem will support long filenames andas you can notice in the bottom dialoguehere I have long directory names andlong file names I can do things thanempty that in the background that Iprobably couldn't have done beforespeaking for example I'll do a search ofdirectory I'll do it whoopsthe horse kind of gets away from yousometimes coming after watching okaywe'll do a search and we'll search allfiles and all directories and that'sgoing on of course I can now switch backand do something else if I want to justgive you an idea now I can open up thecommand pot or on a command works fine Ican go back to my search but I'm nowsearch on all directories so that wasonly really meant to demonstrate some ofthe multi processing aspects of Amentiand the fact that you can switch awayfrom tasks you're no longer io bound byanything that you do in the system someof the other things in this file systemfor example on the NTFS volume which isthe volume there's a new button acrossthe top on the toolbar it's where thehorse is galloping right now and that'dbe being a key or security aspect thisgives you the ability you know directorokay let me select a file here click onthe key and now I can set securityprivileges down to the file level I canchange that to where I can get accessfor full control I can give people somespecial accesses that I've set up whichmay be some multiple of these changeaccess or just read access if I neededtoanother thing you'll notice aboutWindows NT as far as the the interfaceinterface goes to dos boxes we talkedabout that already we shrink this downget that horse with them in shapethere's a there's a whole list ofperformance monitoring tools here that'swhere I can monitor CPU performance I'mdoing that already in one of those rightnow I'm measuring the the processorutilization on this machine NT is verywhen I talked about remote admin toolsfor example you can see the dialoguethat has slash slash Joeunderscore 46 well that's extensible ifI was on a network I can monitor someoneelse's machine our monitor my boss'smachine if I want see if you really getany work done or not I will do done theprint manager it's the same in same asin Windows workgroup some of the uniquethings about Windows NT printing you donot have to have local printer driversloaded locally for example the onlyperson on your network that has to havethe printer driver is the machine that'sconnected to that network printerwhether it be over the networkwhatever the machine is the spooling thejobs essentially that's the only machinethat has to have the printer devicedriver now this is very very nice we dowe use remote procedure calls andsending meta files to the servermachines so that if you ever update theprinter driver you only have to updateit in one place people can connect theprinters using long filenames and nothave to worry about what my printerdriver is I can throw a new printer inthere throw a new memory in it throw anew type of cartridge in it and thesystem can automatically take advantageof that by just upgrading the printerdriver in one placedas command prompt is about the samethere's built-in sound support and whatis NT if we were to go back to controlpanel here's where I changed the cursorsif you'll notice when the just controlpanel aspects all configuration optionsare changed through control panelthere's no such thing as that can fixthis on auto exact an NT everything isstored in a binary database if you evermess your configuration up which I knowthat some people do and I always had tocarry around a das boot disk in case I'dmucked with my system well NT willremember your last known goodconfiguration and will boot to thatconfiguration so that if I go in andmuck with them machines configuration Iblow it away it won't boot it'll come upand says say that I've detected a badconfiguration I'mgoing back to your last known good oneand loading that one which is veryconvenient in magical sound works greatI it I'm not going to blow you away onthe sound here but the whole thing isthat for those people that are familiarwith windows 3-1 you'll be barelyfamiliar with Windows NT you'll be ableto take advantage of the power of thesystem from day one there's no learningcurve on user interface everything thatyou want to do is right there in frontof you it's just an extension of thewindows family and with that I'd like toreally thank you for your timeso this was a good one hopefullyokay test one two three four thing a couple of years agothe very first PC users group I everpresented to was y'all I can say thatcuz I'm in Texas right since that time Ihave made it a habit that's pretty muchwhat I do I will tell you the onlyreason that OS 22.1 is alive today isbecause of users groups team os/2 andgrassroots people it is certainly notbecause of IBM's incredible marketingskills okayyeahthe users wouldn't let the product dieand that's what it comes down to andI'll tell you that I am like you I am auser I'm not an architect I spent a fewyears in the field with an oscilloscopeI finished sort of spent a few years asa Nessy as a PSR I used to spend I wesome people say in the trenches theyhaven't been there it's in the cubiclesokay I've been in the cubicles in theranks that's where I want to approachthe use of this product from now OS 22.1I'm going to show you right now this isthe real shrink-wrap level code and thatis the workplace shell in front of OS 2now if you say the workplace shelldidn't IBM used to have the presentationmanager this is the presentation managernothing has changed as far as that ifyou're right programs - os/2 you'restill right using the PM api is none ofthat's changed the workplace shell isthe way I interact with it it is anobject-oriented user interfaceobject-oriented in a couple of thingsone everything on the screen is anobject all objects are acted upon thesame way for example if I click with theleft mouse button I select an object ifI click with the right mouse button Iget a pop-up menu that is true for everyobject without exception down here is myprinter let right mouse button pop-upmenu even my desktop is an object it hasa pop-up menu you can create your ownmenu items for those things you want toget to quickly and it's very quick andeasy to create those menu items as I goalong in the workplace shell look forthat you'll see the pop-up menus all thetime one of the things that's alwaysthere is help the online help is good inos/2 2.1 is significantly better than2.0 as far as its online help it isreally good as I go along also I reallyhave to point this out this is importantthe workplace show is a job in os/2 wecall them a process it runs in its ownaddress space but as a job it is wellthreaded threads are real important tounderstand now when I say it's a job itmeans I don't if you want to start upos/2 and what I call ugly mode C colonbackslash you can go in seriously yougoing to you can fix this change theline where it says p.m. she'll just saycmd.exe that's always 2's commandprocessor and you come up C colonbackslash and when you want to launchthe workplace shell type in PM shell andit launches it it's a very tighteninga job but it's just a job as a jobthough it is threaded and you have doneit we've been talking about microchannel bus I'll tell you that if you goout on CompuServe there are drivers outthere for the sound blaster cd-rom foros/2 the one that hooks on the externalsound blaster the Mitsumi I think it'spronounced oom it's about a hundred andsome dollars cd-rom device there's adriver DAC the stereo liquidator there'sa cd-rom driver right hey this is goodfor us it really is the idea is is thatyes we sell hardware is the IBMcorporation but my objective is to getos/2 to run on as many machines aspossible and that's what we plan ondoing other things that are in here thatare new PCMCIA support for the PCMCIAand the portable machines as well asadvanced power management okaynow the biggest thing out of all of thisis that now I can have my os/2 devicesand they can be non IBM devices and andthat's terrific oh by the way I let youknow I got a 4633 here I've got 16megabyte of memory because I get it freeandI'll tell you that I could do this demoin eight and you would be duly impressedyou really would it is very impressivein 8 OS two's minimum on the side of thebox that says for David Barnes says 6 isthe minimum I like 8 it's a nice sweetspot and everybody's pretty happy to amegabyte okay now can stop it in OS 2those two virtual dos machines wepreemptively multitasked them so I canrun one in the background doingcommunications that one that had thevideo for Windows I can go ahead and dopixors type of tree I love it I run inthe background but it takes hours tocreate three dimensional rendering Ileave it in the background and go workI just hotkey out of there and go backover and orif that's the way it's going to be whenthe final product comes out yeah that'sa good question a lot of the initialofferings and testing that have beendone on NT smartphone up a lot of theevaluations that have gone on in NT werebased on the April and March builds ofNT the we've been code complete nowsince the end of the year we've allwe've done are all we've concentrated onsince the end of the year hisperformance testing and performancetuning and dos applications the Aprilbuild is about twice as fast as theMarch build the goal is to runapplications as five dots applicationsas fast as taking the information toa file and then access it with myWindows program right can that be doneit is it tricky to do in either NT oros/2 it's it's you can do it in NT or inos/2 there what I would ableto use 3270 though in this case okay letme add also in OS to each of those dosboxes although they're shielded they'renot totally you can use named pipes outof a DOSBox call an os/2 program call sound and I also usethe modem but I can't do it currentconcurrently with Windows I would liketo know if I can both listen to musicand do modem transfers of the same withyour software but what I just areasynchronous and they're all not linkedtogether so that you can do multiplethings about locking another applicationif you'll notice it was uh there was anhourglass sometimes on the OS - what wedo instead when we launch an applicationwe refer to what we have a new cursorit's referred to as a start cursor soyou still have your little cursor andyou have a little hourglass drop on thebottom of it what that makes what that'stelling you is that the application isstarting so we're giving you some inputand some feedback on the fact thatapplication is starting and then you cango do something else
