on</text><text start="358.12" dur="4.71">software developers you have to have</text><text start="360.31" dur="4.74">solution providers or people who deliver</text><text start="362.83" you</text><text start="368.98" dur="6.24">also have to have hardware vendors and</text><text start="371.02" dur="5.76">they all have to work together and we</text><text start="375.22" dur="3.42">kind of feel that Windows NT makes all</text><text start="376.78" dur="6.96">the puzzles fit together puzzle pieces</text><text start="378.64" dur="8.07">fit together from a Microsoft</text><text start="383.74" dur="4.47">perspective you'll see a lot of things</text><text start="386.71" dur="3.87">in the press about where NT is</text><text start="388.21" dur="3.84">positioned but from just a marketing</text><text start="390.58" dur="3.33">standpoint and where we feel it's going</text><text start="392.05" dur="4.56">essentially we feel it's the most</text><text start="393.91" dur="7.56">powerful client server a desktop or</text><text start="396.61" dur="7.32">server on the market today on the market</text><text start="401.47" dur="6.48">that's announced product well it will</text><text start="403.93" dur="5.64">get to that it's only one piece of a</text><text start="407.95" dur="2.73">family though I mean there were a lot of</text><text start="409.57" dur="3.75">people that are running when there's</text><text start="410.68" dur="5.01">three one today a lot of people still</text><text start="413.32" dur="4.17">use das but but essentially Windows NT</text><text start="415.69" dur="4.68">it fills out a family of operating</text><text start="417.49" dur="5.93">systems we start off with the low end</text><text start="420.37" dur="6.21">you can run Windows today on pin systems</text><text start="423.42" dur="6.25">laptop systems as we move up the chain</text><text start="426.58" dur="5.73">of hardware you see we go to Intel based</text><text start="429.67" dur="4.17">workstations that involves two risk</text><text start="432.31" dur="4.17">based workstations and eventually</text><text start="433.84" dur="4.44">symmetric multiprocessing super servers</text><text start="436.48" dur="3.489">and the intention from Microsoft is to</text><text start="438.28" dur="4.359">have an operating system that runs on</text><text start="439.969" dur="4.77">all of those environments so that from a</text><text start="442.639" dur="4.26">user perspective from a development</text><text start="444.739" dur="5.01">perspective you have a common interface</text><text start="446.899" dur="5.37">you have common API set and you have all</text><text start="449.749" dur="4.35">the common things that make it easy to</text><text start="452.269" dur="6.45">develop and deliver on any of those</text><text start="454.099" dur="7.89">platforms now let's talk about the</text><text start="458.719" dur="5.7">Windows NT 2 architecture it's a it was</text><text start="461.989" dur="5.79">designed by David Cutler essentially a</text><text start="464.419" dur="6.06">David Cutler was the father or chief</text><text start="467.779" dur="4.8">architect for VMs for Dec and when he</text><text start="470.479" dur="4.11">came to Microsoft in 1980 a his mission</text><text start="472.579" dur="5.34">was to build the most powerful PC</text><text start="474.589" dur="5.88">operating system now that was os/2 when</text><text start="477.919" dur="4.14">he came and a lot of people forget that</text><text start="480.469" dur="4.02">when when we first went into this</text><text start="482.059" dur="6.39">project the whole operating system has</text><text start="484.489" dur="5.97">existed today was os/2 3.0 and I can</text><text start="488.449" dur="4.411">pull back slides from way back then and</text><text start="490.459" dur="5.37">see that the same feature set that's in</text><text start="492.86" dur="6.119">Windows NT today was in os/2 3.0 feature</text><text start="495.829" dur="4.71">set but essentially it's a modular and</text><text start="498.979" dur="4.23">layered architecture and we're doing a</text><text start="500.539" dur="5.04">little more detail on that its</text><text start="503.209" dur="4.38">client-server in its implementation and</text><text start="505.579" dur="5.281">you'll see how that applies in a second</text><text start="507.589" dur="6.06">to its portable very important as we</text><text start="510.86" dur="5.669">move through enterprise architectures</text><text start="513.649" dur="5.04">and and get into new advances in chip</text><text start="516.529" dur="5.37">technologies that you able to port your</text><text start="518.689" dur="4.94">operating system easily easy as hardware</text><text start="521.899" dur="4.62">vendors come up with new technologies</text><text start="523.629" dur="5.411">when in doesn't when when in the Windows</text><text start="526.519" dur="6.81">NT will be released it will run on the</text><text start="529.04" dur="7.739">Intel 43 to 646 Pentium architectures it</text><text start="533.329" dur="6.211">will also run on the mips r4000 family</text><text start="536.779" dur="5.16">of processors and the dec alpha family</text><text start="539.54" dur="5.089">of processors so NT will be an operating</text><text start="541.939" dur="6.181">system that spans multiple processors</text><text start="544.629" dur="4.721">and it's also was designed from the</text><text start="548.12" dur="3.87">ground up to be symmetric</text><text start="549.35" dur="4.26">multiprocessing and essentially what</text><text start="551.99" dur="3.24">that is for the user is the ability to</text><text start="553.61" dur="4.169">throw in a new processor into their</text><text start="555.23" dur="4.919">machine and get linear performance</text><text start="557.779" dur="5.131">increases so that if I determine that</text><text start="560.149" dur="4.8">I'm CPU bound if my machine supports it</text><text start="562.91" dur="4.77">I put another processor in that machine</text><text start="564.949" dur="4.681">and lo and behold my machine gets faster</text><text start="567.68" dur="3.389">now this is real important when we're</text><text start="569.63" dur="3.42">talking about large computing and</text><text start="571.069" dur="2.761">enterprise environments where I need</text><text start="573.05" dur="2.91">scalability</text><text start="573.83" dur="4.47">to where I can deliver a solution and</text><text start="575.96" dur="4.53">then as I outgrow that solution I don't</text><text start="578.3" dur="8.73">necessarily my system is not outgrown I</text><text start="580.49" dur="8.46">add processors and memory to it now as a</text><text start="587.03" dur="4.85">base component of the entity</text><text start="588.95" dur="5.04">architecture are protected subsystems</text><text start="591.88" dur="4.6">now there's two different types of</text><text start="593.99" dur="4.92">protected subsystems in NT one of those</text><text start="596.48" dur="4.38">is environmental subsystems and that's</text><text start="598.91" dur="4.32">where we have the windows 32 programming</text><text start="600.86" dur="4.11">environment we have the DOS programming</text><text start="603.23" dur="4.14">environment where you can run dossed</text><text start="604.97" dur="5.73">applications you can also run Windows</text><text start="607.37" dur="5.97">16-bit applications you can run POSIX</text><text start="610.7" dur="4.53">one based applications you can also run</text><text start="613.34" dur="3.57">character based iOS to character based</text><text start="615.23" dur="4.38">applications and those are the os/2</text><text start="616.91" dur="4.86">16-bit applications now the purpose of</text><text start="619.61" dur="6">the os/2 subsystem is essentially to</text><text start="621.77" dur="6.3">give users the ability to our time so</text><text start="625.61" dur="4.62">that they can take their OS to server</text><text start="628.07" dur="5.31">based applications and move those to NT</text><text start="630.23" dur="5.82">over time what we found in a lot of os/2</text><text start="633.38" dur="4.56">development was server based and there</text><text start="636.05" dur="4.62">were a lot of client-server applications</text><text start="637.94" dur="4.8">developed under os/2 so we needed a</text><text start="640.67" dur="4.26">subsystem that would allow the users to</text><text start="642.74" dur="6">move and migrate to a high-end operating</text><text start="644.93" dur="6.63">system and the last one is a integral</text><text start="648.74" dur="5.31">security security is very important to</text><text start="651.56" dur="4.08">the base product and is essentially not</text><text start="654.05" dur="3.78">something that was bolted in or</text><text start="655.64" dur="5.49">architected in it was architected from</text><text start="657.83" dur="5.64">the ground up to be C to secure and what</text><text start="661.13" dur="7.82">that is is a government specification it</text><text start="663.47" dur="8.01">sets a security level now here's a</text><text start="668.95" dur="4.45">graphical view of the NT architecture</text><text start="671.48" dur="5.07">and let me just take it from across the</text><text start="673.4" dur="6.66">top you have your os/2 16-bit</text><text start="676.55" dur="6.39">applications very positive Kate it's a</text><text start="680.06" dur="5.88">POSIX applications the windows 32 ms-dos</text><text start="682.94" dur="5.73">and windows 16 and these all run and</text><text start="685.94" dur="5.22">what's referred to as user mode there</text><text start="688.67" dur="4.77">are two modes and NT used I know a lot</text><text start="691.16" dur="4.95">of people have ever heard of six bring</text><text start="693.44" dur="4.44">zero vs. ring three for example that</text><text start="696.11" dur="3.9">architecture doesn't exist in risk based</text><text start="697.88" dur="3.64">processors everything is divided into</text><text start="700.01" dur="4.03">two pieces either you</text><text start="701.52" dur="6.21">are are the colonel or privilege mode</text><text start="704.04" dur="6.03">all subsystems and applications run and</text><text start="707.73" dur="4.2">what's referred to as the user mode and</text><text start="710.07" dur="3.959">as we move down the colonel side of</text><text start="711.93" dur="4.26">things we can see that the hardware is</text><text start="714.029" dur="5.691">at the very bottom we have this little</text><text start="716.19" dur="6.209">piece of code here called how it's a</text><text start="719.72" dur="5.02">good choice I know it really wasn't</text><text start="722.399" dur="4.741">meant to do that but it's referred to as</text><text start="724.74" dur="4.8">the hardware abstraction layer and what</text><text start="727.14" dur="4.949">that does is isolates NT from any</text><text start="729.54" dur="4.62">hardware specific components for example</text><text start="732.089" dur="4.531">there's no standard today in the PC</text><text start="734.16" dur="6.23">industry on delivering multi processing</text><text start="736.62" dur="6.39">machines if you talk to ast compact Dell</text><text start="740.39" dur="4.69">Wyse all these people they're delivering</text><text start="743.01" dur="3.96">multi processing systems they're not</text><text start="745.08" dur="4.5">designing them exactly the same it's not</text><text start="746.97" dur="7.11">a golden age of PC compatibility that we</text><text start="749.58" dur="6.78">once realized so we needed a software</text><text start="754.08" dur="4.23">isolation layer that we could isolate</text><text start="756.36" dur="4.86">those machines from the operating system</text><text start="758.31" dur="3.899">and run NT on those very
