How do you do that thing with the gradient? Have it change into the direction you want? Thanks so much! You're awesome for sharing your knowledge!

Try not to let the pen tool discourage you. I struggled for a long time, but you can find tutorials that give you simple shapes to trace till you start getting the hang of it. I'm not a graphics master, but I can draw, then scan, open in Illustrator, & have fun tracing and coloring cartoon people etc. It's pretty fun. And then your pic can be any size, from postage stamp to poster just by clicking and dragging. Illustrator's pretty cool. Give yourself time.

At the end of the day its the final product that truly counts is what I was trying to say, not that technique is not directly related as it is. But pfltuts does have a valid point.

This is really good! Thank you Pfltuts :D

Named Pixel for life, uses vector graphics! :D

Thanks for this but illustrator truly is a horror if you are used to photoshop, I mean seriously this must be the dumbest program ever.. It's like going from a ferrari to a miyata.

In this case yes but if a company has a bad logo theres no point them saying, yes but it was very complicated to make!

you can work with vector shapes in photoshop it just makes it more difficut and you don't have advanced vector tools you find in illustrator, but you could create just vector art in photoshop if you want to. i hate it, though, i use fireworks for screen graphics icons and bitmap work, illustrator for logos, photoshop only when i nedd to do something for print.
Report spam or abuse
That is not necessarily true. Although I will agree most people use illustrator to create logos for the exact reasons you have stated. However photoshop can create some effects that you simply can't achieve in illustrator, that's why certain logos made in photoshop are made REALLY big to start, as long as the quality is appropriate for the scale of the logos use there's no reason photoshop can't be used for logos.

ive been looking for a while on how to begin a logo design in illustrator. seems like the hardest part is mastering the pen tool. thank you for showing your process from beginning to end. now i know what i need to do. great tutorial. :D

Your concept of stylization is the anti-graphics. At school I have been taught that a logo first of all must have been designed perfectly with compass etc., scanned in a high resolution image, use photoshop to make pure blacks and pure whites, then begin to trace it in Illustrator.

really nice vid. I think you earn a lot from YT partnership!!!

I agree and I think it actually is a good logo.

Also another quick tip for you in CS5 (not sure if in earlier versions) is that if you have a harsh anchor point and want it smoother - go to the options bar and select the smooth anchor point... it really halps smooth the anchor point. Multiple anchor point can be selected like this if you need it.

What is better, Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop?

Can always convert to a vector after photoshop if you started large enough. Illustrator is still better all around for this type of work.

Photoshop also uses vectors, until you rasterize form.

Thanks a lot for this. I'm mostly a photoshop user and I always think of Illustrator as being kind of a daunting tool. You've presented it in a way that's quite easy to understand and I feel a lot more confident about learning how to use it better after watching this. :)

There is never a good reason to design a logo in photoshop. You clearly aren't a designer by trade. I can't even begin to describe how ass backwards it would be to design a logo in photoshop and then live trace it. I feel the noob comment was a bit hypocritical.

@deen4321able the program you use doesn't matter entirely, but make sure that you are creating vector logos. But if you want to become a professional, you definately should get used to using illustrator. (some people use photoshop or indesign, but remember: vector logos!)

@arditmuhaxhiri I was using illustrator CS4
Report spam or abuse
@Saints9R I'm sorry but the purpose of using illustrator is to create vector logos which can resized and placed on anything without compromising the quality. No professional company will take a pixel based logo created in photoshop (unless of course, it's a vector art using the pen tool, but in that case illustrator is by far the better program to use). It's driving an automatic ferrari after a manual, it just sucks. I'm not trying to criticize, but simply share the importance of illustrator.
