Myth: GOP Better On National Security

by The Young Turks • 14,762 views

MSNBC host Cenk Uygur debunks the myth that Republicans are stronger than Democrats on issues of national security and fighting terrorism. He speaks with Peter Beinart of The Daily Beast.

There is a difference between the framework call realism and uber-realism. Realism is a framework that say that if you want to be taken seriously in an alliance, get ready for a war and don't allied with anyone. Uber-realism assert that state are rational (not always - plural form of powers mean state look irrational when taken as a unit) and are getting in war to improve their power&security (what about soft-power like improve economy?). The GOP is uber-realist, the pentagon is realist.

@genie0390 I always find it funny when a Right Winger who's totally brainwashed by years on lies comes onto YouTube and tries to "teach".
Report spam or abuse
@genie0390 How about Bush dismantling the team who was specifically assigned to hunting down Bin Laden. Or Bush saying on multiple occasions that he's not really concerned about Bin Laden? The notion that Obama hasn't captured any terrorists for interrogation is false. A cursory google search clarified that. Also the "Obowma" thing is the name calling I was specifically referring to. How about "George 'Walks hand in hand with leaders of countries that fund terrorism' Bush"?

@lestliness Indeed. I was quite disgusted by Cenk's "defence" of the democrats.

one thing that should be remembered is how they found saddam,he was found hiding in a hole in the ground in iraq but bush could never find bin laden. the thing here is bush never wanted to find bin laden.bush and his father are great friends with bin ladens family, but bush really wanted saddamwhich is why we were lied into iraq. and of course since bush wanted saddam they found him. obama wanted to find bin laden and he found him. bush=failure obama=success on this one

@Bennybombomable your statement in many ways is true, but one can not deny the fact Obama did bend over and concede to the opposition a little more than he should've if he just was firm on his views. Yes, he passed healthcare (a bad healthcare bill), start the economy (without actually changing the system...). But compared to the Republican possible candidates in 2012, Obama will beat them with no problems.

@ubermisogynist What the the hell are you talking about? He didn't call for anyones deaths like glenn beck or hannity, he didn't accuse people of bogus crimes Its easier to kill people if you dehumanize them...are you talking about killing bin laden? I mean I'd like to see him in prisonand it would have been a better choice, but I won't cry at his funeral either... Or are you crazy enoughto believe that he was calling for the deaths of teapublicunts?

@lilpoindexter the same can be said for democrats. they serve the same corporatists. both parties subsidize and bail out the corporations that run this country. Both parties continue the wars and in fact start new ones.

@chaumont20 Well, I'm not TOO accurate, but the discrepancy should be enough to justify my comment. > The number of barrels (per thousand a day) dropped more than 200 within the past year, yet skyrocketed that high (even higher during some months) following the invasion of Iraq a couple of years earlier.* * Source: Energy Administration Information In other words, we were importing more crude oil from the Persian Gulf following the invasion of Iraq... but I'm sure it was coincidence. @XGP15A3 ... Oh really now? So, when Al Quada bombed 2 US Embasies in 1998 and Bin Laden declared war on us infidels in that year there was no pressure to get him? Then why did the CIA track his movements from Sudan to Afghanistan? Why waste those resources for the CIA to do all this so when they found him that your hero Clintan said no, there is no legal authority to take him out. Hey Clinton, I got you legal authority right here! If Clinton took him out 9/11 never would of happenned. Period!
Report spam or abuse
@pandasftuw .... LOL, Yes Obama did give the order. But you know as well as I that the key information that led to getting Usama started in 2005 from CIA interrogations. If liberals had their way since 9/11 captured terrorists would of been given US rights and have lawyers and be able to refuse to speak. Thus, what happenned to Usama last Sunday would of never ocurred. So, you are a complete hypocrite to congradulate your hero while ignoring the hard work of many Americans that led to this.
Report spam or abuse
@tiberianfiend I can't agree that the Dems would have gone into Iraq. That was a war the Bush/Cheney team wanted even before they were elected. They used 9/11 as the excuse to do it, even though there was no connection between the two. Since the Democrats had no preconceived plans to take over Iraq, why would they have used 9/11 to start a war there? Better to concentrate on Al-Queda, which is located in Afghanistan/Pakistan, which is exactly what Obama has done.

@DashCat9 where's the record that Bush was not concentrating on getting Usama? 4 yrs ago the CIA finally determined who the courier for Usama was and began to concentrate on his movements which finally led us to the hideout. That's on record! worth noting that the CIA under Obowma has not captured any other terrorists for interrogations and they're busy going after the CIA interrogators themselves. what a great move!! in Yogi bear' words, it's not over till it's over,..fun stuff still 2 come

@theclawism Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was the one who masterminded 9/11 and Bush caught him in 2003. Capturing or killing KSM years before 9/11 might have stopped it but certainly not 2 months before - an operation like 9/11 takes years to implement and I seriously doubt any details were left undecided by July 2001.

@theclawism By pro-war I mean people who think military interventionism is generally a good thing and that American interests should be looked after overseas with force. There are varying degrees of pro-war, ranging from Bill Kristol to Chris Matthews, but they all agree that the US military should conduct operations overseas - they just disagree when, where and how. Obviously there are legitimate wars (defensive and revolutionary), but the US has no good reasons for military action right now.

as bad as this whole situation is for the GOP, sadly i don't think they'll ever become as obsolete as i once thought. there are just too many racists, homophobes, religious nuts and plain old idiots who will always vote in every election rain or shine for republicans. until people realize that republicans represent a constituency that is made up of literally a few hundred people, not even the top 2%, the GOP will still have great influence, sigh. how sad.

Republicans always spend more money unnecessarily on the defense and pick fights with little countries. The illusion is not that America is safer, it's the opposite. Republicans push the military to be policemen of the world to open markets for the wealthy industrialist. The US fights and bullies the little guys while getting too connected with henchmen and dictators such as Hussein and Khadaffi. Like in Iran, this causes a backlash of resentment in the people.

After an eight-year charade, the Democrats reveal their true nature. If Gore had won the presidency, we would've definitely ended up in Afghanistan anyways, and there's a good chance Iraq would've also followed. The only reason the Dems took an anti-war stance for so long was that it was politically advantageous due to the Iraq War being hugely unpopular.

I know there's an old adage that the worst peace is better than the most just war, but this isn't war that Cenk is advocating. Al Qaida is a small enemy and small actions are what's required, not taking over countries. Anyone who says that this means that democrats are as war mongering as the republicans is stupid. Recent republicans enter mass wars with shock and awe tactics, Democrats use small operations with minimal collateral damage and actual clear objectives.
Report spam or abuse
@theclawism You're right, but Cenk certainly seems more pro-Dem when he's on MSNBC. He seems to think that in order to point out just how horrible a party GOP is, he needs to prop up Dems - and if you believe two-party representative democracy is the way to go, obviously that's true to an extent. Strategically that's a terrible plan, though. If pro-war folks turn to Democrats, you'll only get more pro-war Democrats. Why not promote liberal values so that there are less pro-war people around?

A real problem is that the GOP has spread this bullshit amoungst our men and women in uniform. So much so that a lot of people in uniform thought Bill Clinton was some sort of traitor. This is unacceptable because it was untrue, and the our democracy requires the military to respect the commander in chief.

This kind of reminds me of how in Canada, the Conservative Party has this reputation for being "tough on crime" and they use this to justify building new jails and put "tougher" sentencing, despite crime already having been dropping for like three (3) decades, and their policies having no evidence of actually reducing crime.
