I am from Ukraine, from Soviet Union..once my grandma had told me that she saw something black and shaped like an arrow very high travelling really fast and leaving white string of steam..about 40 years ago..i believe that it was sr 71

Thanks for the Music. I don't think you have any idea why airplane lovers like airplanes. It's not for the music. It's about information. You should have left the original voice over. Where was the flight from and to? What's going on here.

My uncle flew one and still has it

My Dad worked on the computer system for this plan and as a child I when with my Dad the Farnborough trade day and had my photo taken with it. Beautiful plane

Travelled all the way fromMelbourne Australia to view this stunning aeronautical masterpiece at Hill Air force base in Ogden Utah. . . . worth every minute of the 16 hour flight  . . worth every cent to get there . . . .Has ever a greater designer of aircraft existed than Kelly Johnson. A true genius. . . .and a truly great museum

i saw the one in mcminville oregon, and felt the same way!

A virtually perfectly designed aircraft. Fastest operational manned aircraft on record highest operating manned aircraft on record. sleek and beautiful. Stealth? Countermeasures? Oh you mean those massive Pratt & Whittney ramjets?
Report spam or abuse
keep in mind though, this plane was designed as a stealth reconnaissance plane. but, like you said, with those awesome ramjets who needs stealth when you can simply shove the throttle open and disappear over the horizon

Actually it was retired because the cost to maintain it was too much. Paying for the fuel alone was too much.

What a gorgeous and awesome aircraft. It's too bad they still can't use it for something today.

no other jet could match the sr-71's eternal greatness

they have a real SR71 (Black Bird) in the Utah Air Force Museum.

The USAF had a SR-71" emergency recovery base" located at Bodo Norway..the Habu number #964 was named the Bodonian Express, which is now displayed at the SAC Museum..Thank You Norway for hosting the SR-71,during emergencies, while operating near the USSR border....

One of my favorite Planes ever. F the f22 the f35 and so on. This is the premier plane they could not perfect.

There should be a worldwide fund to keep this bird out of museums and in the air. It is the inspiration to multiple generations of pilots, engineers, scientists, designers, artists and dreamers. Many thanks to Lockheed and the men and women of the USAF who kept this bird in the air and kept our dreams alive.

I just found more info about IFR and the Black Bird. It took 500 nautical miles or about an hour to fill the tanks with JP7 according to one of the pilots... I stand corrected...

The perfect music for the perfect plane :)

this planes maximum speed has never been recorded. it has gone up to mach 6 but if it went any faster, which it can, they think it would just deteriorate as it flies

Quote "Mig Pilot"by Lt.Viktor Belenko..(We had a master plan to intercept the SR-71 by positioning a Mig25 in front of it and one below it,,but Soviet computers were very primitive and there was no way that mission can be accomplished)(first of all, the SR-71 flies too high and too fast, but if we could reach it,,our missiles lack the velocity to overtake it)(a head on shot was impossible for our guidance system could not adjust to the high closing speed.) end quotes

I still can't believe they made this amazing plane in 60's
Report spam or abuse
I didnt know that. Thank you. I just wonder why its taking so long to perfect, (i've also heard it called Darkstar). But then the conspirator in me stands in and says, what makes me think its not already in service. Eitherway, i just want to see the final design and what they release to media, of what it can do.

Al the really fast aircraft were made in the 60's and 70's. In the 80's and 90's there was so much electronics "stuff" in them and fighter became bombers there was little need to go really fast. Have you ever seen a CF104 do a high speed pass - thats fast ....... and beautiful.......And loud.

More then a few of the early Roadrunners, were recruited from the ranks of B-58 crewmen..THX

the last images of the blackbird accelerating past the chase plane just reminded me of how i would run past slow new yorkers and leave them in my exhaust (fart) trail..NYC does not move fast....theyre a bunch of slow morons if you ask me

Actually the replacement for the SR71 was satellites. They didn't have drones back then.

Well few have seen them in person but the B-58 Hustler taking off was something to behold. Four J79's in full afterburner with black smoke blown everywhere and that shape - just as nice as the SR-71 and the B-58 was an operational bomber. There are few if any GOOD video's of a B-58, I saw three take off for Platesburg NY many, many years ago and it was something I will always remember.

The last flight of one of the planes least flown in action by Pilots. Only the Adepts were allowed to fly this wonderous flying machine.

Aircraft designs are so far ahead of people. i seen this plane at the air show in beleville ill. back in the mid seventies. For this top secret plane to be shown at that time, there must have been a new plane and that probably was the stealth bomber being kept from the public. Now we are seeing the stealth bomber and no telling what the new plane is, but it is not the hypersonic jet that came apart last week 4/23/2012

you know b-2 sr-71 all those were top-secret one time, but today they are publishing all there weapons (it`s to bad:S) but some must stay secret, but they are publishing there weapons!

Interesting !! thanks. I always found it neat that the Concorde if flying at max speed 1350 mph at max altitude 50+ feet could not be intercepted as well and it was a passenger plane.

The accident was not the reason it was grounded, it was because it was a money loser despite they had raised the fares. Economic downturn and the collapse of exclusive business class travel caused it as well as the sale of many trans ocean business jets.

It flew exactly the same route as the AWACS take when they approach the landing strip. The shape of the SR-71 is very typical, and can't be mistaken for another plane. Couldn't believe my eyes I must say.

Hello! How many airshows in the US, plus sporting events. Thousands chum! Some 14 year old kid gets a touch down at the local Yahoo school and there is a military parade (because they want him to enlist so they will have enough stupid kids to fight in the next war the president is going to declare next week). When he comes home missing legs and arms he's called a hero to make him feel good but really he was a cook that never fired a gun. We have seen it all before, nobody learns anything.
