+FattyCantRun I don't know about guitar world, I only know it's one of my favorite piece of music I've ever heard.

What no, Radiohead, Kinks...........................

+Azarathian MageWhere do you think metal originated ? It didn't just pop out of nowhere. It started off as very heavy rock.............and everything is a sub-genre of Rock 'n Roll.
Report spam or abuse
+Joe B I take your point, but with that logic you could argue that world or latin music are sub genres of classical and that jazz and blues are sub genres of them... I think for a type of music to become its own genre it needs to be significantly different from the music that inspired it; now take a rock song, lets say Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Free Bird' and now take say Pantera's 'Walk' as an example of a metal song, now you really can't say they're that similar.

I want to learn stuff like this, and I'm about 2 years into guitar. I don't really have a teacher and I'm not really interested in getting one. Where can I start learning stuff like this (technique wise?) Is a teacher really the best way?

ONLY one fatal floor. No Radiohead.
Report spam or abuse
+Richie Balanou Fall out boy "covers" while Radiohead churns out unique music. Fall out boy just copies songs talented people make. Example: Centuries copies Tom's diner. So go ram your car into a pole with you in it
Report spam or abuse
Richie radio head is amazing shush and btw fall out boy does not copy they sample from other songs.

What no Skrillex? What no Darude? What no Sex Pistols? What no Baauer? What no Lil Wayne? Lil Wayne is the most underrated guitarist in the history of rap. His chops are sick, dexterity is crazy, precision at its finest, perfekt feel. He even cuts down trees for his own guitars and skateboards. + He ghostproduced thriller. + He organized Woodstock 69 + He gave birth to Elton John + He taught Satriani how to breathe. So the next time you compile such a list take Wayne into consideration please.

Nice try, but the sex pistols would have been nice.

Sex Pistols, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, The Clash, Iron Maiden, Misfits, Minor Threat, MC5 are left out but you put fucking 2 Green Day songs, 2 Guns n' Roses songs and a CAKE song in your montage? You need to get your priorities straight. Anyway, you played what you picked well, good job.

+sylvo330 Oh come on man. It doesn't matter! Everyone has the right to have their own choices! Everyone's different, right? As cheesy as it may seem but give us a break. We're not all the same person. And yes, he certainly did play great!

Can someone define 'Riff'?
Report spam or abuse
All of these are riffs. I'd say it's what defines a song as much as the lyrics, if not more. Think of a popular song like any of these and humm it to yourself, whatever you are humming is most likely a guitar riff.
Report spam or abuse
You played no songs of my boy Bieber. :/

+Rory Sanger why did it give me an option to translate that lol
Report spam or abuse
Aren't some of these in Eb standard though? Like Say it Ain't So?
Report spam or abuse
Report spam or abuse
+Cmac The Great Pride And Joy is also in Eb tuning, although I'm pretty sure he just plays some of the songs in the wrong tuning. It still sounds good.

I'm 13 and proud to say some of my favorite songs are played here

+Leo Dare Liking music from another generation doesn't make you cool, it makes you pretty fucking average. Get over yourself. It's fine to like current music trends.

Shut up, attention whore.

What guitar is that and which cable and amp did you use??
Report spam or abuse
Squier affinity strats are a great starting guitar! I'd definitely go for that (especially with amp included)

Why is everyone going on and on about the song's he DIDN'T do? Can't you just appreciate what this HUMAN DID PLAY? It's not the end of the world! Gosh, people just ask for too much...

2 guns & roses songs but no Elvis? No Little Richard? No Jerry Lee Lewis? the three who actually started the rock n roll genre
Report spam or abuse
+Victor Torres Jr. +M Tordas Allen Freed coined the phrase. He didn't create the genre.

Glad to see Mastodon, not "Mastadon", hit the list.

That's part of the Internet. Most of the time it's a parent that thinks the internet is a waste of time and the kids should do nothing but stay in school and go outside. This list is a sham! Not one Metallica rift, seriously?!
Report spam or abuse
+Analytical Associates I personally would have picked a different riff for Metallica, but being that was the first song to be released for the black album. I can see why it is on the list. The Beatles are simply the best. I love all genres of music.

Cool! Thanks for your thoughts!

C'mon guys don't complain. In this video there are a lot of songs that are fantastic and he can't play all the songs of the rock. So don't complain a lot about this and enjoy this awesome guitarist.
Report spam or abuse
I've seen this video so many times, I know the order of the songs played, great stuff by the way
Report spam or abuse
There's not Anastasia - Slash ? Though it was a quite good Riff , Am I wrong ?
Report spam or abuse
It was a great riff, but this is a brief history, so Slash is less likely to be on here.
Report spam or abuse
If it's a chronological history, then why include covers that were recorded decades after the original riffs became so popular? Pictures of Matchstick Men for example.. and while I appreciate Oh Well being there, Peter Green's Black Magic Woman was so much more memorable than Santana's cover. Riff wise.
Report spam or abuse
That aside, nice list. Hopefully introduces some great classics to those that recognise them but have never known who they were by.
Report spam or abuse
Why is there no Megadeth?
Report spam or abuse
+Wurdox It's thrash. I don't know why he put a Metallica song in there though. It could also be because he couldn't play that fast. ;)
Report spam or abuse
Very good.  A little disappointed there was othing i there by Boston.  I mean, growing up in the 70s and 80s, you could not turn on a rock station without hearing More than a Feeling, Don't Look back, Peace of Mind etc.

More Than a Feeling for sure.

Include some kinks and oasis and you've actually got a class list there.

Strat was a bad choice for this, much too chimy for many of the riffs! Should have used a JACKSON!! Best guitars in the world!!!

They had Crossroads by Cream. Even though he kinda messed it up and it wasn't the Clapton we deserved. He still did a great job though overall.
