The Silk Road and Ancient Trade: Crash Course World History #9

by CrashCourse • 1,412,300 views

The Silk Road and Ancient Trade: In which John Green teaches you about the so-called Silk Road, a network of trade routes where goods such as ivory, silver, iron, wine, and yes, silk were exchanged...

I think that the "People who have a test tomorrow" category on your pie chart is a little larger than that

The Black Death is only the worst KNOWN plague in human history. Some theories suggest the Native American population was as large, or even outnumbered the European population, but sometime between Columbus and the majority of white settlers, a plague wiped out 20-80% of the population. And yes I know that is an incredibly large gap, but the point is we just don't know. We can estimate roughly how many Native Americans there likely would have been during the height of European colonization, and we know the population was much larger before then, but we have no idea exactly how much larger.

+xXTheTyRantXx I know when Manifest Destiny took place, that's why I mentioned that Great Sioux War and Louis and Clark which were apart of the Manifest Destiny movement.   Columbus discovered the Bahamas in 1492.  That doesn't mean they started colonizing North America at that time.  The Mayflower and other ships did not land until 1620.  The very first colony was founded in North America was Jamestown and was founded in 1607.   You said earlier that there were 400 years between colonizing North America and Manifest Destiny.  This is clearly NOT 400 years.  You also stated in your first comment that 90% of the Native American population was killed off before America was even a country, which happened in 1776. You still have provided no supporting information that would validate your claim.  In fact, the Louis and Clark expedition and lots of other things refute your claims. I asked you to provide proof of your assertion that 90% of Native Americans were 'exterminated' before America was even a country.  You responded with wild inaccuracies and claims that there were 400 years between colonizing N.A. and Manifest Destiny. Your math is wrong.  Your history is erroneous.  You have stated that I 'don't know when Manifest Destiny took place' yet in my last statement I referenced several events that took place during Manifest Destiny and provided dates.  All of which were in the 1800s.

This comes from the Crash Course channel and is one of many videos that focus primarily on history. I teach 6th grade history, which is all about ancient civilizations. While these videos are too long and the guy often talks too quickly for my students, I could see some benefit from them. This video in particular, along with the other videos that focus on ancient civilizations and people, has some good information, but in its entirety, it's not appropriate for middle school students. I would use this particular video during class so that I could monitor which sections my students watch. I would focus on the elements that connect with the content in my curriculum/textbook. Students would be asked to compare the information in the video to their classroom and see what differences/similarities they find. If they find differences, they would need to find additional resources to validate which one, either the video or textbook, is correct.

Some of the things said about Mahayana Buddhism were pretty inaccurate. It's not simply about praying to have a nice rebirth and worshiping the Buddha. You don't 'worship' the Buddha in that sense of the world and the goal is still to free yourself from samsara, but instead of working to do this only for yourself, you do so with the intention of benefiting all sentient life simultaneously. The largest defining difference is the Bodhisattva path in which you dedicate yourself to a path based upon compassion for others instead of simply freeing yourself from samsara the way the do in Theravada Buddhism. The idea is that by practicing compassion you become more and more selfless which brings out your own Buddha-mind more and more and you acquire much greater amounts of merit and purify your karma much more fully through this practice. But the focus is always more upon helping others and relieving their suffering instead of focusing on freeing yourself alone from suffering.

How is it that Buddhism spread along trade routes when the idea of Buddhism is to get rid of desire, but the whole idea of merchants and trading was fueled by desire? If these merchants were Buddhists then why were they merchants?

I feel I belong in the Grammar Nazi category of CrashCourse viewer demographics, but to play devil's advocate for the billionaire demographic: I'd like to say that one can certainly begrudge those accrue personal wealth to dizzying heights via corruption, public endangerment, are fueled by zealous greed, etc. However, so long as the wealth is gained though legitimate practices, those who reach ridiculous heights for supplying sub-par materials are not to blame, but the consumers who buy them. Likewise, those who create great things have no obligation to contribute to charity organizations, so while their contributions can make huge differences & are certainly in a better position to do so, we should not lump them together with those who prey upon people's wallets by facilitating broken systems or the ignorance of impressionable or just plain stupid people.
Report spam or abuse
+Bryan McCormick The only real way to fight back is to hit them where they hurt, their wallets. Without the consumer being conscious of underhanded marketing tactics & exercising restraint, corporate greed over innovation & quality will always prevail.
Report spam or abuse
+TheTaintedWisdom i'm right there with you, but ultimately i think it's so much more random than that... popularity does buy a certain amount of consumer confidence but advertising doesn't work... it just has enough psychobabble to compete with the self-help genre that makes a lot of sense as you go chapter to chapter but ultimately it's just firms convincing companies to hire on a popularity consultant... there should be rules against large enough companies advertising at all, if only to redirect money to the employees of those companies instead of sharing profits with the popularity mill

CrashCourse 's definition of mahayana being different from what buddha taught is very wrong. mahayana just as other buddhist school is based on buddha's sutras, especially Prajna-paramita Sutras taught at Vulture Peak in India. different schools of buddhism is not fundamentally different but just the focus is on different aspect of path. Buddha taught different teachings based on different focuses. its bit like buddha saying to those who had anger issues, that controlling anger is most important and while who are lazy, buddha telling them diligence is most important for enlightenment. While not fundamentally different as both teachings are designed to make a better person, are still bit different as the focus is different.. while the eight fold path is taught by buddha during the first turning the wheel of dharma, Prajna-paramita Sutras that gave birth to Mahayana was taught during the second turning the wheel of dharma.

Just a thought here, the swastika's original meaning was one of a positive connotation, used by Ancient Egyptians, Buddhists, Chinese alike... all until Hitler came along and used it as his symbol... now if you wear that on your sleeve and go walkin down the street you're gonna have some problems... even if you're like the most devout Buddhist ever, most people don't know about the swastika's history. However, my 7th grade history teacher is awesome :D

Hey people I have a question who needs a bit of reflection. When the Xiongnu defeated the Yyezhi and subsequently made a cup from the leaders skull, do you know if they believed in a mistic power as" the force" in SW ,however in this case called "orenda". I am asking this ,because of my  search for the most plausible theory about the origin of prabulgarians who also believed in the mistic power of orenda.

why does history abandon the term A.D. I understand the aversion to religion in historic fact but the calender we use today is by fact centered around Jesus of Nazareth regardless of whether he existed or not. Is this not hypocritical?
Report spam or abuse
Well many non-Christians find the idea offensive. When people don't believe in the same saviors then they tend to dislike things like that. Also Jesus may not have been the son of god or even lived. I find that B.C.E and C.E. More useful
Report spam or abuse
I understand that viewpoint but history isn't a viewpoint its a truth. and the truth is the BC AD system was created by the catholic church centered on their  belief to be the date of Jesus. to change it to BC CE but keep the exact same year is sorta like cheating history wouldnt you think
Report spam or abuse
did john seriously just say grammar nazi?????? he has to know that that term is so highly offensive. to pretend that people who are asses about grammar are the same as people who committed genocide(s) and murdered 11 million people and tortured and enslaved millions more is obviously a slap in the face to anyone whose group was targeted during the holocaust (esp. romani and jewish people)

Its the Internet. Its a Video on some research of the silk road. The Internet is a medium for Media and Ideas. If you don't like this Video on the Silk Road as told by This author, find another. Sorry your knee jerk, IM OFFENDED by a non abusive and/or frequently used term. Obviously John Green isn't glorifying or Reminiscing on Jewish or any other Religion holocaust. He was using as termed from wiki 1:(slang, idiomatic) A person who habitually corrects or criticizes the language usage of others. But you knew that already. You need attention, You need to make the internet about you. You need to voice an Idea that is so widespread common and annoying it has to be just like....a grammar Nazi. But that's all it is slightly annoying, but I digress maybe you should just watch the video and keep such petty debates for the real issues like, Mental Health, Religious oppression or Womens rights.
