Wow! They still sounded great in 2007. I remember hearing this in the early 70's and falling in love with 50's music because of this song. Thank you Fleetwoods!

Okay, Gary Troxell of the original group is here, representin' with style and with gorgeous grace! The ladies who are with him aren't the ones who were with this gentleman in  nineteen-of-fifty nine. I understand that and  I don't mind because they sound great together. Come Softly To Me is a song well calculated to only sound great in a boy/girl vocal trio. This is a song that needs good solid singers to make it work and Gary's song IS A SINGER'S SONG. After that, I have no more to say except this...GOOD JOB!!

As any musician will tell you having a hit record is both a blessing and a curse  You are condemned to sing that damn one song for the rest of your life eg AMERICAN PIE   etc

Always Loved This Song .. Sound just great almost 50 years later

The other Dennis - you just can't get any better grew up with do-wah style and at 68 still singing along love it thank you!

Mason, we got some of the best memories left for sure!

This brings back so many memories.  This song was on one of the first stereo records my father bought.  The male and female voices were completely separated which was very impressive back then.

this may all be in my head but when Gary looks to his left and sings "i want......i love you so" he is singing to Barbra but when he is symbolically singing to Gretchen (his right) he sings that he has waited so long. is there a message there? Love the Fleetwoods, thanx for posting.

GREAT. HOW WILL YOU SOUND WHEN YOUR 70 PLUSS ??????
Report spam or abuse
@kawliga33 Are you sure? According to the Fleetwoods web site: "Female Lead Vocalist, Arranger and BMI Million Airs Songwriter, Gretchen Christopher has remained the one constant performer of the trio." "Of the Originals, Barbara Ellis retired in 1974, Gary Troxel gave his written resignation in 1983 and only Gretchen Christopher is authorized to carry on the name "The Fleetwoods" per their legal Agreement. She has trained Replacements on both coasts" It appears only Gretchen remains.

he sounds great .man i know you people have heard this before but im 47 and yes i was born way to late.i love doowop and so do my kid's

There is simply nothing that can touch this perfect marriage of song and voices. Even the mild distortion on the original recording adds an intensity and importance to the sound. Dump me on a deserted island and give me this one song.

@Mrironsides And Gary's hair left the band after a contract dispute in 72.

Gary's voice is still great; he sings in the same key as 50 years ago. His is true God-given talent. As someone said, no strain, no fuss. He is a good example of someone who is very good at something making it look easy. These girls are as capable of tight harmonies as the original girls were. Very very good.

Gary is now almost 70 and he is still one of the most talented and classiest vocalists around. I agree, keep the music coming Gary.

Truly one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Although Gary's voice cracked a couple of times in this video, overall, he still sounds great.

Wow! When you're a good artist, that's for youre entire life!

I agree with you Sansankudo. Little romance. Check out their earlier version. It was in American Graffitti. The song is from 1959.

Gary sounds as good as he did back in '59. Time goes by too fast. This is such a sweet reminder of the way it was.

Hello Foxolita, quite interesting this was your first purchase since this was also the first record released by the newly formed Dolphin Record Co. (Dolphin No.1). There was a trademark conflict and they changed the name to Dolphin Records starting with No.2. Anyway it's quite something for a record label to make Number 1 with their No.1 release. I passed up buying a copy for 89 cents at Safeway. I hope you kept your copy maybe you should try to have Gary Troxel autograph it.

@rakeuiff now that you have totally misconstruded my statement, they still don'tmakem like this any more. I am 67 years old and happen tp love the doo Wop and true Rock & Roll era from the mid 50's to the mid 60's. Just likepeople much older than me stiil the toe big band era and etc. This crap they make today with the heavy metal and the screaming to a point where you can't even understand what they saysing, just plain stinks, This is my opinion and you should respect it just I will yours.

She would be my aunt too Jonathan :) Aunt Bonnie is amazinggg

@tbcass I don't understand your comment, my point is that without Gary they may be called the Fleetwoods, but Gary was the soul of the group. His trio of Gary plus two girls are better than todays Fleetwoods by Gretchen. What needs to happen is that Gretchen swallow her pride and everyone get back together for their fans.

On this date in 1959 {Mar. 9th} "Come Softly To Me" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; on April 13th it would peaked at #1 {for 4 weeks} & spent 16 weeks in the Top 100. Ranked 8th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1959 chart. Covered charted versions; Ronnie Height {#45 also in 1959} & The New Seekers {#95 in 1973} Had two #1 records in 1959; the other was "Mr. Blue". Trio's original name was 'Two Girls and A Guy'; changed it to the name of their telephone exchange, FLeetwood...

Another one to check out is Ed Ames' "My Cup Runneth Over"..There is a version on here that was recorded a year or 2 ago when he was 80...It'll STILL send chills up 'n' down yer spine !

An old goose-bumps effect classic. Gary Troxel still provides that fluid sentiment, but the back-up band(especially the guitar), & those marvelous silky back-up harmonies deliver that soft warm breeze & touch the heart. Great song. Great post.

Look at this man ,in the sunset of life , still such a gentleman and such a beautiful voice. Us millenials and the latest generation don't produce talent like this upon release ,let alone 40 or 50 years after their prime.THIS is talent

OH WOW...they are still just as amazing. i would love to be there.

All you guys seem to be just beautiful people, all kind and positive comments. My name is Pete'Kiwi'Keegan and I had a band and was on BBCTV in 1957. I am the same age as Gary, a it more hair and I am still performing too. The Fleetwoods were a class act. Music can save our planet! Love to you all! Pete

How very precious! See, one of the perks of getting older is that you just don't have to be self-conscience, you can just be yourself and be happy. Now, compare this one to when they were "just babies." He was so self-conscience and miserable, couldn't even look up at the camera till half-way through the song. Thanks for posting!

Not sure this correct. One of the original girls has continued performing with Gary. I believe the lady on the right in this video is one of the originals.

@rakeuiff And you may be right. It is easy to romanticize an era or an age....but, I still like the music and, mixed with a little nostalgia, it makes me feel good. That is what is important. Take care.

Yes, I know...that is why I said "symbolically" singing to Gretchen, it is referring to the way she goes around taking all the credit for the Fleetwoods success. I should have added Symbolically singing to Barbara. No big deal either way, if I had to choose which group to pay to see, it would be Gary's group.

You can still easily reocgnize him in his eye's as if he never lost that boy-ish look. Looks wonderful and still sounds great

This is just amazingly beatiful :')) If only music of our generation were this good :'l

I was listening to this when I was 15 on my Time Life 1950's cd. AWESOME!!
Report spam or abuse
Another great thing about this exceedingly original song is the way Gary sings the lead vocal WHILE ALSO adding "doobedoos" between phrases It's a feat of breath control, since there's very little time to scoop up a breath! I'm not sure if any other group features something like that. Indeed, they had a magical chemistry, which, as usual, is almost impossible to sustain more than a few years. The profit aspect of the music industry has broken up many a fine group.

Gary Troxel had quit The Fleetwoods, Original Gretchen Christopher owns the rights to the gorups name and has her own group.
