The Empress of Soul & The Pips y'all!

If you're lucky enough to have beauty and talent like Gladys knight, you don't need to flash your tits and arse. Brilliant performance, back when black folks made fantastic music. A truly emotional and uplifting song . So much better than today's "music" which has descended into cynicism, insults and filth. Almost forgot to mention, the pips were cool as hell.

+Jim Hope True, but don't forget Cher who was still showing her twat way back then.

It's truly hard to believe there was ever a time where music was so fun and happy and wholesome. No purposefully inserted controversy, no simulated sexual acts, no dressing up in meat suits, just entertainment.

There you go, my friend, as my man Jack Riordan wrote, Thank you for being normal. There's not many of us, y'know?
Report spam or abuse
+Stuart Perry +Stuart Perry sure it was controversial during the 50s and 60s. But the thing there were only few acts that crossed the line in the conservative 50s america. Elvis presley, james brown, little richard etc. Elvis shakimg his hips was considered sexual. But it was differnt times then. When you look at the music nowadays, girls shaking their ass, wearing bikinis in like every video it has become the norm now. I do wish this kind of music would be more mainstream but it is not due to music industry being so controled and surveyed. They make people famous now by just looking at surveys and analysis of what preteen girls and boys like. Its really sad. However im not saying there arent any good musicians out there. You just have to go look for it harder.

I'm guessing Mariah Carey fancies herself comparable to Gladys Knight. If only... there never will be another GK, yall.

+Stuart perry You're probably right about selective memory. Its just that I remember the 70's with such nostalgia and affection.

It's funny how Gladys was placed on the backbuner at Motown for a group she helped to discover, The Jackson 5. She left and this song won her a Grammy and the group that presented her the award was (drum roll)...you guessed it, The Jackson 5.

They had such great music back then... what happened? Look at the crap that passes as music today...

Music is still awesome. There's so much variety. The internet is the best thing to happen to music. Stop looking at the past with rose colored glasses.

You rarely become a famous singer unless you are good looking like Gladys Knight or Elvis. Many background singers are better singers than the artist they are singing background for, but unattractive, such as Diana Ross's background singer in the 80s. She was a heavy, unattractive woman, but what a voice! Unfortunately, ugly and/or fat singers rarely get a chance to shine. Yet, I understand it. We don't want be entertained by someone who is hard on the eyes. :-)

Takes me back to when people who could actually sing made the best music that was great and was able to stand the test of time.  These were people who could blow you away with their voices, even without musical instruments.

heres some trivia for you, The song “Midnight Train to Georgia” was inspired by Lee Majors and Farrah Fawcett. Songwriter Jim Weatherly phoned his friend Lee Majors one day, and the call was answered by Fawcett. Weatherly and Fawcett chatted briefly and she told him she was going to visit her mother and was taking “the midnight plane to Houston.” Although Majors and Fawcett were both successful by that time, Weatherly used them as “characters” in his song about a failed actress who leaves Los Angeles, and is followed by her boyfriend who can’t live without her. Eventually the genders were swapped, the plane turned into a train, and Houston was changed to Georgia. The recording by Gladys Knight & The Pips went to Number One in 1973.

what a voice she has, she sings loud, and always on key.  I love how she has a break in her voice, a snap now and then.  she never lip syncs.  No computerized enhancements  for vocals back then like they do today to fix bad voices.  gladys was always letter perfect.  I adore her style.
