by OpenPolitics • 90,533 views

October 1999 - Tory hecklers leave an open goal for Blair during a debate on the European Union.

Norway IS-a part of Europe,But not EU. What a dick

219970 you said: "He is guilty of spin, of "sexing up"....but not even the BBC or other critics accused him of lying." & "that two independent courts" Neither hearing was by an independent Court - not only were they politically appointed but the paramaters were drawn up to ensure a given verdict. Did you read the transcript of the summing up where it was absolutely clear there was guilt but not within the narrowly defined paramaters - as for the BBC every report shows them as biased! Blair LIED

@thehindugod So who do you think will win the Labour leadership?
Report spam or abuse
You mean the Tories that signed the Single European Act and the Maastricht Treaty? I don't think so, somehow.

Tony Blair was a good leader now he has gone Labour is a weak party !

Tories got told. Blair is the best PM since Churchill.

No one shouted Norway.... Commentators have played the tapes back and no one shouted it - this was classic Blair theatrics, ie. he made it seem as if a Tory shouted Norway. Was used to good effect though!

I think both of you present to extremes, particularly you Greg. Blair certainly had his faults and made some serious blunders, but you cannot discount the fact that he was an extremely intelligent and articulate man who did accomplish a good amount of very positive reforms. I know and understand your anger over Iraq, but don't degrade yourself (and your argument) by doing silly things like calling him "B.Liar". That's just childish and dumb.
Report spam or abuse
Didn't change the rules, I was making the point and explaining why Tony didn't get publicity -- British people don't really care about former PMs. As for more damage than Blair/Brown, you ave to specify that. But, I believe the Nazis were amongst the worst.

@EuropeanBrit And the rest of the world rely on similar style monetary and political unions to trade? The EU is just taking advantage of the free market, and milking the prosperous west in order to support Eastern Europe's false economy.

There is no record in Hansard of anyone shouting "Norway"

scarface7uk7 - I presume that you were born after 1997 and await at least some education. Then you may see him based on FACT rather than fantasy. Similarly you may learn how catastrophic was the economic incompetence of his chancellor. Are you entirely sure you have spelt the last word of your contention correctly, alternative spellings come to mind that more accurately indicate the damage he has done to our Country and the long term peace of our planet he is an evil individual without morality!
Report spam or abuse
ManlySlut You said ANY - I responded to your question and NOW you want to invent new rules!!! Please name an Enemy, Terrorrist or PM who has done as much damage to our Country in 500 years as Blair & Brown have done in 10 - please specify with substantive facts, without changing the rules!

elisegrey. I am forced to ask compared with whom! He was in no meaning of the word 'Great' and he lied to embroil Britain in a dishonest, corrupt and false war which he had no part in leading. As a PM he was a catastophy, losing control of our borders & NHS, possibly fatally damaging the Unity of Britain, surrendering control of our law making and permitting the economicly illiterate Brown to virtually bankrupt us during a period of natural growth. The man is an excrescence in our history!

The Labour-loved European Union is spiralling into debt, with mammoth fraud and incompetence trashing the EU inside and out. But that won't stop EU penpushers holding member states to ransom by taking them to court to snatch their multi-million Pound wage claims! Paste title into the bar: EPIDEMIC EU FRAUD AND DEBT NO BARRIER TO EUROCRAT WAGE CLAIMS!

Yes I studied European Union Studies at University but thank you for reiterating what I already know full well with regards to member states. When people use the term "In Europe" in a political context and from a British perspective, they are more often than not referring to the European Union.

listen, 7 years ago uni's like oxford took AAB, now they take AAA. people who think 'standards are dropping' are using absolutely no concrete evidence whatsoever and are only looking at new A levels such as Dance as basis for those accusations. qualificiations like History or physics are still just as hard (if not harder) and the reason your having trouble hiring good people is because your clearly a dope. penury? UK is still No.5. and the Tories didnt exactly 'help industry' did they?

@Maino88 Also, note how your response consists of repetition rhetoric, rhetorical questions, a logical fallacy, an unsubstantiated claim (Reform has not worked), yet more rhetoric, and then two ad hominem attacks. There is no semblence of an arguement in your response, nor of intelligent discourse.

Doesn't matter. He said, "Name one other country in EUROPE" Norway IS in Europe, yet they have had the good sense to stay out of the disgusting monster that is the corrupt and debauched EU. To swap terms around in mid sentence is dishonest of Blair; but hey, he's adept at that .. need I mention Iraq and that lying debacle? Enough said.

to be honest mate your mincing his words. he meant the eu, everyone knew he meant the eu the tories got decked. blair was dishonest but so is every other politician, the truthful ones get slated and sidelined because the public doesn;t want to hear the truth. also, the EU is an overall possitive force. you can bleat out dailymail bullshit about beurocracy and corruption all you want but the media is just as bad if not worse than politicians and party's

Yes indeed. As an Englishman, I am proud to be a staunch Atlantacist. I despise the self appointed left wing intellectuals who believe it is hip and trendy to criticise the United States. However, it is America that rebuilt Europe after WW2, for which we should be eternally grateful. America isn't perfect, but what country is? America should be extremely proud of its role in establishing the 2nd democracy in the Middle East after Israel... Iraq.

ManlySlut: how about Gladstone, Lloyd George, W.S. Churchill, Lord Salisbury, Pitt, Wellington even the revolting and treacherous liar Edward Heap. There will of course, in the fullness of time be much publicity by historians of the lies, treachery, economic illitaracy and irrefutable fact that the Blair/Brown era did these United Kingdoms more damage than ANY enemy in over 10 Centuries. Bankrupting our treasury, embroilling us in corrupt wars based on their lies and surrendering to alien rule.

@erestun No, they started selling off the gold reserves in 1999 and Blair was fist lord of the treasury as well as PM so ultimately he was responsable for it even though Brown was chancellor.

ManlySlut To name but a few - the utterly corrupt slaughter of peoples in Iraq. The failure to address Zimbabwe, Darfur or the threat of China in Africa. Failure to control our borders, failure to defend the NHS, surrender to destruction of our postal services. Sale of £Billions of gold at a deliberately suppressed price, crass incompetence/dishonesty in costing the Olympics, signing the utterly dishonest Constitution without the referendum they promised - tell me what they got right!

@sketchydc The collapse of the £? Joblessness? How many jobs do you think the British have in Brussels? Because surely those are the jobs to which you are intimating. And of COURSE the dole queue's in Switzerland and Norway are positively snaking round corners. Breadlines everywhere! Reforming it from within has not worked. Because we have created a monster of a bureaucracy that has more competencies today than ever. Your economic illiteracy is only outdone by your political naivety. Congrats.

Blair spent years trying to get us out of the E.U. labour even put him in charge of a committee to organise for our withdrawal from the E.U. and he would like us all to forget about that and pretend he was always a "proud european citizen" as he calls himself. 219970 Not for a moment was the speech in Parliament in the September spin, it was irrefutably lies regarding WMDs and 45m. delivery predicted in written form in the July as the lie to come and provable and a lie. The lies of The Drowning St. dossier stolen and plagiarised from an old document at Berkley UCL as proven. I stand by my word: Tony Blair LIED deliberately as predicted & embroiled Britain in war crimes against Iraq aided by Brown, Straw and others in his cabinet. Blair Lied, NOT spin.

Iggy3d Yes it must have been pleasant to have no long term responsibility or outcome from his dishonesty, political ineptitude, crass mismanagement, lies, wars, economic illiteracy. Any fool can look clever by blewing other people's assets and long term security, squandering their rights of self determination and investing their money in his own personal self agrandisement. How very fortunate for you to have been able to enjoy the short term benefits and walk away from the long term consequences

Or is your need for ill manners a product of too tight a nappy in the 1990s?

@tdp1909 Most economic commentators suggest that the first "true" tax haven was Switzerland, followed closely by Liechtenstein. However i was referring to swiss past it has changed but its past lay'd those foundations for it to be where it is today. As for isolation Britain of any nation is not isolated with the commonwealth and now the EU commonwealth it never really was alone.
Report spam or abuse
@EuropeanBrit Actually, Qatar is wealthiest :-p. GDP per head should be the central focus as it is primarily an economic union. What else is it? It certainly took the wrong lesson from the war in being so anti-democratic. And going back to Norway, you say "a poll", but Norway rejected EU membership in 1994 & most polls since then show they still do, some by as much as 2/3. Why would this be if the EU were such a boon?
Report spam or abuse
how do you know? have you taken an A level examination recently? and when my generation is nursing yours in your homes you'll have brilliant schemes like EMA keeping kids in schools and learning to thank. and if i'm wrong, why did he get voted in THREE TIMES with a MASSIVE MAJORITY each time? i suppose evil mr Blair tricked the tories into putting forth morons like William Hauge?

Even this clip shows Blair to be dishonest on camera at Westminster - he says 'name one other country in Europe' - the riposte is Norway, upon which Blair distorts the argument by changing the question. He repeatedly misreprents the EU as Europe and can not honestly relay his own corrupt argument set to surrender these United Kingdoms to centralised, alien and foreign corrupt and undemocratic law making. The man brings nothing but shame and dishonour to Britain & damage to our economy & jobs.
Report spam or abuse
bigman25plus25 No I did not take exams recently thus I can compare - I am in the generation that is finding it hard to find qualified employees in a generation with no hard qualifications & the highest drop out rate from Uni. In educational terms Labour have been catastrophic. A mud slide in each election I agree & look at the economy & reserves that have been squandered to achieve it. From international status as the 4th. largest economy to near pennuary with no industry - well done Labour!!
Report spam or abuse
@sketchydc Oh and by the way, don't insult my intelligence and then spell argument "arguement". And reform clearly has not worked, as the EU continues to become this illiberal, undemocratic monster. When was the last time the EU's own auditors signed off on the EU budget? 14 years ago. That reform you're on about is clearly working like a charm.

Norway has the sort of relationship with the EU that we should have. Membership of the European Free Trade Association. We should be offering the EU an ultimatum - either scale down and abolish the top-down, micromanaged, bureaucratic, socialist, undemocratic nonsense, or we, the UK, the 2nd biggest funder of this godforsaken mess, will withdraw.

@Maino88 The european union provides most of our trade. We would lose jobs from leaving it. The european union holds the largest holdings of the pound, if they sold it it would result in the collapse of the pound. Switzerland and Norway have never been in the EU, and as such their economies are not geared toward trade within it. It is as if you were comparing a dairy farmer complaining about a cheese company, then bemoaning how the tobacco farmers do just fine without the cheese company.

America should be extremely proud of protecting the State of Israel from the fundamentalist Arab Muslims who have committed themselves to ''driving the Jews into the ocean.'' The Jewish people, who were driven out of Israel 2000 years ago by a fascistic Roman dictator finally returned home in 2008 and America has rightly protected them. The world should be grateful to America for being a beacon of individual and economic freedom and conservatism (though I don't know your ideology).

Weird to think that both Blair and Thatcher, convincing winners of 3 elections each, were ousted by their own party, not the electorate... Thatcher would most probably have beaten that fool Kinnock in 1992 (even John Major got 14 million votes against him), and Blair would probably beat David 'the-other-leaders-are-so-crap-that-he's-the-best-option' Cameron. Without their own parties chucking them out, the weak opposition meant that Blair and Thatch could have had 20 years each, what a thought!

Don't know what you mean by destroy, you probably mean change, because we still have all of what you listed (excpet the constitution -- we don't have one). Also, you've neglected to mention how Blair/Brown did any of that. Well, the Nazis did change the religious balance and ethnicity -- immigration changed after WW2, the nazis forced us to wage war, not too good for our independence and liberties -- or even democracy ( for eg. we sided with our political enemy -- Russia).
Report spam or abuse
ManlySlut You propose I provide all the facts so that you understand history in 500 characters!! I think not. The actions of the Nazis strengthened the values of britain and our understanding of OUR Constitution. Blair/Brown have so damaged OUR Country that the less literate even fail to understand we have a clear and established Constitution. War strengthened OUR understanding of independence, liberty & democracy even whilst colluding with our established enemies we maintained our independence
