Sliding Cars in Seattle Snow on 11/22/10

by shanrick37 • 4,306,128 views

Cars sliding down John St on Capitol Hill during 11/22/10 winter storm!

I live in Seattle and the sheer number who take the hills during these storms is staggering. Seriously, hunker down and park your car.

Especially Queen Anne. It has earned its reputation for morphing into an evil, spiteful ice rink as soon as even one snowflake hits the ground. I wish I was exaggerating...unfortunately, we get a lot of folks from Southern California who come up and don't do their research, or folks from the Midwest or East Coast who just assume they know everything about driving in snow. Then they discover how "special" the snow we get here is.

Man, people need to learn how to relax that right foot off the brake, enjoy their ride into the spin, then drop the fucking hammer when you're coming around. It's so easy to do. But no.. we gotta break traction by locking the tires, then keep the traction broken by holding the brake through the floor. There should be more classes/training on these types of situations before you can even get your license. Because for some reason, everybody ALWAYS panics and locks 'em up.

Half an inch of slush that melts in less than an hour doesn't count as snow. And that's usually all we get. I've lived here my whole life, and it was definitely weird that we got as much snow as we did almost three years in a row. That is extremely rare for us. When we do get real snow, it's usually just one year and it's back to business as usual. The 2008-2010 period was just plain freaky.

+Chris Wilson. That's Queen Anne Hill in that video. I don't care how good a driver you are, you aren't making it up or down that hill if it ices over. It's just plain evil when it's icy, everyone knows that!

Everybody keep in mind Seattle isn't all hills.. I live in Seattle and about % 25 of Seattle is hills..
Report spam or abuse
There used to be a total of 7 huge hills, but they took almost all of Denny Hill and used it to raise the street level after the Great Fire. And I'm about 90% sure this video is from Queen Anne Hill. Queen Anne is just plain evil when it ices over.

I have a friend that has a great 3rd floor apt. on Queen Anne. Which is even steeper than this, which looks like Capitol Hill. Every year... endless entertainment. Half an inch of snow that melts a bit then freezes is WAY worse than a foot of snow that does the same.

Just looked up Route 43...   goes south from UW through Capitol Hill then west (downhill) to downtown... and vice versa.

Seattle has some of the wettest snow in the country, thus it freezing overnight into a skating rink.  It's not that bone-dry powder you get everywhere else.
Report spam or abuse
You have obviously never been anywhere near the great lakes in winter then

I remember talking to a couple of Swedish tourists who had visited during the winter. They insisted that we had some kind of freaky mutant snow here, because they'd been driving in really deep snow their whole lives and even they couldn't handle the snow here in Seattle! Part of the problem is the mild temps: it stays just barely warm enough during the day for everything to melt, and then it freezes again overnight.

This is totally unacceptable behaviour. The whole lot should be done for dangerous driving as this would not be allowed in the uk. There should be a complete prohibition for all vehicles except emergency vehicles in these death trap conditions A vehicle curfew should be imposed in these conditions.
Report spam or abuse
Under such conditions, the city should have closed this street

Maybe instead of being a spectator with a camera , you should have went out there and stopped people or shoveled your road . WE THE PEOPLE NOT FOR THE PEOPLE, WE ARE LAZY AMERICANS!

isn't it the colder temperatures that produce more slippery ice?

Me and my mom luv doing donuts in the parking lot in MN there is so much snow and ice cold wither but it's fun

Why dont they have chains? Or snow spiked wheels haha

Don't brake when you slide

This is like the 6th video I have seen of vehicles crashing and sliding in ice and snow in Seattle and Spokane.. don't they plow and sand up there??
Report spam or abuse
Bus starts sliding, hits the bus stop sign The bus is here!
Report spam or abuse
I would rather be castrated than drive a bus in the snow.
Report spam or abuse
I would rather try my hand at driving the bus in the snow

This every day in Russia. No big deel yes

I've heard this music in a few pornos......Yea I'm pretty sure.

OMG the first bus should have backed out of there
Report spam or abuse
Omg. This looks so terrifying :( poor people.

Bad crash with VW golf and Camry.
Report spam or abuse
Quite a few vehicles crashed here.
Report spam or abuse
Seattle doesn't use any chemistry on the road to prevent ice? And drivers don't use spike tire? Is that kind of weather rare for Seattle? Just curious.
Report spam or abuse
It is quite uncommon. I don't think we got any snow at all this winter, and I can remember plenty of winters that were snow-free. Usually, when there is snow, it doesn't even stick. The problem with the year this was recorded, was that the snow had melted a little during the day and then froze over at night.
Report spam or abuse
Perfect music for the task.
Report spam or abuse
I live in Seattle Woodinville and it's like rare if it snows here we have a steep driveway so whenever it snows wee sled down our driveway lol
Report spam or abuse
It easy to sit behind a keyboard and tell drivers how to do this and that. Because of the intersection at the bottom of the hill there may not be enough room to "calmly" pump your brakes. Especially going down hill. I guess the snow cough the diligent road crews by surprise.
Report spam or abuse
+HappymanFIN Whoa that is weird.  I honestly don't know what that's about.  I can see how potentially that would happen but the wheels would have to stop turning at exactly the same time, I would think.  What vehicle are you driving? I'm curious now
Report spam or abuse
I was waiting for the fire truck to crash, lol
Report spam or abuse
all the people locking up the brakes. Gently on the brakes, winter tires is the way to go.
Report spam or abuse
There's barely any snow at all any everyone's nearly crashing because they're going way too fast, fucking idiots...
Report spam or abuse
The road is a sheet of ice. You cant expect anyone to drive down that

Report spam or abuse
That's exactly what I was thinking. I had to mute the video just watch it. I would rather watch the video without music anyway. The unfortunate sound of the cars crashing is sufficient enough.

never happen with studded tires.

get salt and put down, get salt and plow trucks, learn from Chicago and Minneapolis and Indianapolis and St Louis, we never have that problem here in the windy city, have garbage trucks fitted with big plows ready for plowing thru the alleys and streets, have the streets salted before the snow gets worse, have plow and salt trucks assigned to downtown first and the hilly areas too then when those streets are salted, do the rest of the main streets
Report spam or abuse
It snows so seldom that the city does not have enough equipment. We've not had a major snow/ice event in 3 years. They errantly put down a "brine" and the weather forecast changed and it turned to ice. They now do use salt, but Seattle has a great snow plan: Stay Home! With 500' steep hills like this, it's the best way to go. https://www.google.com/maps/@47.6199412,-122.3156769,3a,75y,99.29h,70.63t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1syanu5YE4DXhq6NbgBcTX_Q!2e0

Going out on the sidewalk when it snows in Seattle isn't much better than a death wish. They were smart to wait for the fire department.

Continuing my comment from below: The snow that hit that year also came out of nowhere. Not one person was prepared. Even the weather guys were like oh crap! Well everybody, it's snowing now. So combine a bunch of people who spend a day or two around snow per year, the hilly landscape, and the coffee induced ego of manly men who think that driving in real snow is the same as driving in the usual slushy mess, you have a recipe for lulz.

I was in that storm,it was not pleasant,it actually stretched all the way from Everett Washington to Dunsmuir California!

+Matthew Valadez Its really a matter of geography. Seattle is a city built on hills, if you go 4 blocks over to get home you are still going up the same hill. Regardless I have no clue why youre talking about black ice when the video shown obviously has completely different conditions. Thats compacted snow with ice, not black ice. I would have thought that the white color would have been a dead giveaway...  You say "people say you cant see black, I actually can" but its pretty obvious you havent a clue what youre looking at. Hell you cant even tell white from black so you sure as hell cant see black ice.

That Corolla slid in the first part so fast as hell.

snow tires, low gear, tap brakes rapidly if all else failing.
Report spam or abuse
Lol at the non Seattlites who are making comments. That year was the only snow we had. Often, there is only one snow to cause this kind of mayhem per year. It hasn't snowed more than a slushy inch in 3 years at least. It's a waste to buy chains or snow tires, and exceptionally destructive to the roads in the case of snow tires. The Seattle area is also extremely hilly, everywhere in the surrounding area. You can't get anywhere without encountering a hill this grade or steeper.

When your tires start to spin, you're screwed. Be GENTLE on snow & ice. Shift to 2nd gear (especially if you're driving a Ford), and ease on the gas. When your tires are spinning, you have NO traction. There are so many drivers out there that have no idea how to drive on snow or ice.

I didn't hear any honking to alert people
Report spam or abuse
lol lets just stay on the brakes... women drivers lol
Report spam or abuse
They should just closed this street down once it start to get icey. WOW!!!!!
Report spam or abuse
Well the problem is, most of the streets in Seattle are hills, so if they close them down, there is no way to get to another place.
Report spam or abuse
This is really stupid, the local police department should have done something about the road put some signs, regulate traffic, or close the road. Clearly it is not a safe road to drive on. I guess the SUV drivers don't know anything about 4x4!!!
Report spam or abuse
This is a 500'+ hill. The other main street up the hill, Madison, was worse. Seattle rarely gets snow that sticks - it was a freak storm and they did not have equipment to handle it. When they advise NO TRAVEL, people do not listen in a city. Also, just above, to the right is a major hospital, 2 blocks away. Along with all that, people in Seattle do not know how to drive on ice and snow. Check some of the Queen Anne Hill sledding videos to see what happens when it snows... watch?v=2dUpZ_O9Fqc  &   watch?v=4MSpiuK44Uo

C'mon, couldn't we donate some tires to those poor people? Obviously they just cannot afford adequate tires for winter. Which is very dangerous, since they are stupid too. At least bus drivers should know that pushing brakes hard does not improve the grip at all.
Report spam or abuse
If you insist on driving in the snow, it might be a good idea to have studded tires on your car. It doesn't matter whether your car is 4wd, rear-wheel drive, AWD, or front-wheel drive. It might give you some degree of safety in the snow and ice.

To the author of this video. Great video. Did you post the link to the local news. You're doing a public service making people aware. This could of been Pittsburgh, San Fransisco or even Calgary. West coast town are just not using salt.

The real stupid ones are the people walking oblivious of the cars
Report spam or abuse
i can't stop laughing at the bus!

I don't know why people lock up their brakes.  You're supposed to pump the brake pedal, gear down and then steer towards the skid.

Anybody else hear a piglet squeel at 2:20?

i love how the red audi just goes through no problem
Report spam or abuse
we would like to use this video can you check your inbox
Report spam or abuse
instead of recording why dont you go up the hill and diverge people from coming down the hill?
Report spam or abuse
right! that makes the most sense. That's what I would do. But then again, we wouldnt have this awesome vid lol
Report spam or abuse
Yes going out on a street, that you're literally witnessing countless accidents on, and then standing along or in the road to direct traffic, as clueless drivers are sliding all over the road and sidewalk. Very safe. I work with vehicle accidents daily, first rule, don't put yourself in danger. Trying to direct traffic on a road at night without proper flares and high vis gear is stupidity.
Report spam or abuse
thats why i keep out of the cities in the winters, people drive like it's summer -.-

Seattle drivers are the worst. They go too slow up and too fast down
