Do Catfish Like Bacon? Uncle Steve is fishing at the far end of Bond Lake in Fred G. Bond Metro Park in Cary, North Carolina. Recently Eric, a friend, recounted his success using a piece of bacon...

I have caught a few cats using bacon on trot lines and limb lines but many more carp than anything else , have also used the bacon fat for catching blue gills and creek chubs to use for trot line baits.

Hydrodynamic resistance...try dynamite, it works in any weather.  Just kidding.  Thanks, Uncle Steve.

To see a video about what it is and how it works ... GOOGLE this search phrase: 'uncle steve fishing invention' and there will be three of my videos about it.

just a word of advice if you put the bacon in a plasti ziploc bag and soak it in olive or vegetable oil the catfish will eat it right up! (you can also freeze it for future use)

The first combo that Uncle Steve liked and still fishes with (sometimes) is a Zebco Slingshot rod and reel ($15). The next one he liked and still fishes with (sometimes) is a Zebco 33 combo rod and reel ($25).

Not sure what you mean by 'tag'. If you mean fishing license ... yes.

I wish you were my neighbor. I would go fishing with you all the time! I built my own dock last year down on a local river called rush creek. good cat fishing down there! :)

@tkholeman I know only about one camera, the one I use (Creative VADO HD 1st Generation Pocket Video Camera)...which is "obsolete." I suggest that you watch YouTube videos similar to what you intend to do ... such as fishing channels. Ask the YouTuber what they are using and what they think of the camera. And there postings like this one, that may be helpful: /watch?v=8O37oUb6aKk GOOGLE: 'Pocket cam video comparison. Flip Ultra HD - Creative Vado HD - Veho Muvi - Droid X You decide'

There are many many bass fishing youtube channels ... and a few don't do it from *boats*. That's where you can learn well. Uncle Steve hardly catches any bass ... and most of those are by accident. :^)

I use bacon for catfish since about 5 years ago! They love it! It's also amazing for brim or sunfish!

@tkholeman Looking forward to your video showing that ... my friend Eric would appreciate it too. Eric was definitely satisfied with the results of using that scrap of bacon that he found on the Lake Crabtree dock.

It may be illegal where you live, but not in North Carolina. State and Provincial laws vary.
Report spam or abuse
It's illegal to have more than one pole in the water at a time per person....

bacon will work..a friend of mine swears by bologna...uses it for about everything even bluegill

Uncle Steve i am 12 and can you give tips for bass fishing

A tag is a special license to keep a certain type of fish. For example: here in Minnesota, you need a tag to keep a sturgeon, but not if you release them. Hope this helped!

To be honest uncle steve in cold weather i use night crawlers. Here in upstate new york it is 51 degrees here.My theory is when i use my panty hose/liver and fat based baits the cold stops it from maybe releasing all of it's scent. We have to stop fishing around this time unless you like ice fishing.

Most of my January 2012 fishing has been similar to your experience this day. Where are the fish?!?!?!
Report spam or abuse
Do / Does ___________ like bacon? The single stupidest question ever asked.
Report spam or abuse
i catch channel off bacon allllll day!!!
Report spam or abuse
Agreed! Should fried it up nice and crispy with an egg. :^)

Laying your rod/ fishing pole on the ground is not wise. I did it once against my dad's advise, and a huge catfish pulled it into the lake. I was able to retreive it by going swimming. I'll never lay my pole on the ground again.
Report spam or abuse
Its hard on your poles to put them in water
Report spam or abuse
You can have 3 rods in the water at one time in the lower 48 states

I love this guy, a wise fisherman, followed and a get a good chuckle off his sarcasm every now and then. happy fishing uncle steve

Advice? yes: fish, fish, fish. That's how you learn: go fishin' a lot. Reading, watching videos and getting advice are just hints. The learning is just doing it. :^)

Your'e right one time i did that walked 10 feet look back my pole was being pulled into the middle of the lake. I got it by snagging it with a lure but i almost had a heart attack because i thought i lost my dads 30year old pole.

I used to fish with old bacon all the time Uncle Steve its a catch all in my area, Cats, Bluegill, Turtles, and I have landed a few bass.

I really enjoy your fishing videos Uncle Steve. They are very relaxing and entertaining. Since we are heading into the month of February, the crappie should start biting down your way.

@lsdmt Most of my January 2012 has *not* been like this video. Now let me qualify that. Lake Crabtree is the only place fishing right now. Bond Lake: NADA Crabtree-Enbenezer: NADA Crabtree-Old Reedy: NADA Eno: NADA Lake Crabtree ... after night temps have been at least in the 40s for two or three days along with warm days (50s-60s), the cats wake up and the catching is good. So Wednesday and Thursday of this week ought to be very good for catfish at *Lake Crabtree*.

Hey Uncle Steve, have you ever considered putting a bell on your poles when fishing for cat's or would that be "cheating"? Might be a good audio feature to your production as well as sounding the alarm when there is activity on your poles when back is turned.
Report spam or abuse
I've been using bacon for catfish for the last year or so, they love it.
Report spam or abuse
What kind of Microphone are you using a lavalier or shotgun mic?

I work on towboats on the Mississippi river and have caught some of my biggest Cats on bacon.......fresh water eels love bacon also.

LoL, why is it so entertaining to watch you fish when I should be out on my canoe doing my own fishing? You've gotten yourself a new fan Uncle Steve!

Do you take fishing area requests? If so there is a little place here in VA that is extremely fun for fishing. {Message me and i will tell you} You can catch Crappie, Bass, Brim/Bream, Catfish {flat/channel and some bullhead} there.
Report spam or abuse
Yes, have tried "preserved" salmon eggs. No bites. Maybe the fish here don't know what they are.
Report spam or abuse
I heard hotdogs work well for catfish, not sure about bacon. Btw, that place looks like a perfect place to catch some carp.
Report spam or abuse
One night last summer I noticed some kids fishing off the boat launch dock were adding a small chunk of bacon to their dardevle spoons. I thought it was a bit odd at first, but they pulled in 3 pike as I was packing up my gear.
Report spam or abuse
@adamitshelanu Whenever it warms up a little more in Kentucky I'll give it a go I have tried to bass fish lately the weather is very odd here and the fish aren't active right now but yes I'll do that!!
Report spam or abuse
@NYGMENfan1 I think it is likely true: there are summer baits and winter baits. Maybe so few people continue to fish in Winter down here because they try summer baits in winter and wouldn't get caught using nightcrawlers. :^) Stay tuned ... more experiments on this topic coming.

Uncle Steve loves olive oil (has some every day). Sounds delicious as a "scent-ful" experiment to try.

@NomkuThoj I don't know if there are any carp in Bond Lake. It's known for its stocked cats...has two of those floating NC Wildlife feeders on a timer near the dam. BTW Fred G. Bond Park which is much more than this lake, is a great place and very popular,
Report spam or abuse
It sure is ... which is why Uncle Steve uses $10 fishing poles. The fish can't tell the difference ...
Report spam or abuse
@adamitshelanu Also I'll have to purchase a camcorder any suggestions?
Report spam or abuse
The Graham-Mebane Lake looks like a great place to fish. Uncle Steve suggests that you go to Walmart and see what is on the fishing rod rack that appeals to you. That's what Uncle Steve did the first time. Of course he picked out the wrong fishing pole (better used at the seacoast). But he went back after trying fishing a little, and picked out a more suitable combo.

Thank you very much. Probably the closest we have in NC is a special license for trout in addition to possession of the basic inland fishing license. Considerable effort goes toward stocking and research for our mountain trout fishing.
