Human Evolution and Why It Matters: A Conversation with Leakey and Johanson

by American Museum of Natural History • 76,787 views

Celebrating decades of groundbreaking exploration in East Africa, renowned paleoanthropologists Donald Johanson and Richard Leakey shared the stage at the American Museum of Natural History on May...

So humans appeared 100,000 years ago and have stop evolving since?  That' a first in the animal kingdom.

+Sean Kelly And how and on what bases do you devide humans in races? And what do you want to say if you want to devide them into races? Because there is then an Intention behind that term. The differences are small and show only that humans that lived in different and seperated populations still can and do evolve due to environmental conditions.

+MARK KULTRA  And why are you disabeling the possibility to answer if you post questions? Is it because you don't want answers? "How can they say that we were able not to have evolved from anywhere else but Africa, when the oldest human remains were discovered a year before this video was uploaded in 2010 near Tel Aviv Israel???" Oldest remains of anatomic modern human(!!!!!!!) found near Tel Aviv is about 55k years old.....so quite 50-60k years younger than the oldest remains of anatomic modern humans(!!!!!!!!!) found IN AFRICA! But I have to admit that the scientific conclusion changes when NEW facts are discovered. Like in the case of Neanderthaler. Long time it was claimed that he was not capable to speak or even to have a culture. Now we know better, thanks to more discoveries. He was able to speak, but not like anatomic modern humans because his anatomy (wow who had guessed it) is different. He would have spoken with much deeper voice and nasal.

They make a lot of unsubstantiated claims in this video, for instance the assumption that Neanderthals were not able to speak flies in the face of reason in that one cannot make such a claim without solid evidence, say a frozen corpse of a Neanderthal.  Would it not be likely that Neanderthals had a spoken language provided that their brains were larger than that of Homo Sapiens'? Neanderthals (brain capacity 1200-1750 ml: averaging 1475ml) Homo Sapiens' (averaging 1350ml) There of course is the theory that they were not able to use vowels, but even then language would still be very possible- especially provided that they used tools and made art, which implies that they were able to communicate... and even if they were not able to speak, it does not mean they could not write... Afterall, there have been homo sapiens who were deaf AND blind who have written books. They also had larger visual corteces (cortex), which implies that they were able to see better, clearer, further, closer, as well as within a slightly larger bandwidth of the light spectrum than homo sapiens. By the way, what is going on with Dr. Leakey's head??? It looks like he sawed off a horn that grew prematurely respectively to the other.  1:06:40 How can they say that we were not able to have evolved from anywhere else but Africa, when the oldest human remains were discovered a year before this video was uploaded in 2010 near Tel Aviv Israel which date back 300,000 years???  You do not KNOW- you believe. I do not say that I KNOW that we evolved from any particular primate, but I do believe that we evolved. They are turning theories into religions. They are just as crooked as the popes- I am glad schools in America are spending less resources on this topic- even if we knew for a fact every link within human evolution, it wouldn't keep the train of human progress on the tracks.  If you believe in evolution- Evolve.

How can it be that "extinction is a more frequent event than speciation"?  Over the long term, I'd think that, at most, they'd be equal.  What is he talking about?  For extinction to be more frequent than speciation over the long term, species that don't exist would have to be going extinct.
Report spam or abuse
And there was a "speciation event" for each of those now-extinct species (except the very first one, which is the creation of life.  I guess that could be considered a speciation event away from nonliving matter.  Still seems like there logically MUST be 1 more "speciation event" than "extinction event" for every species now alive on the planet.

I like the response of the "species not being doomed by the American Pole>"  After all this country only makes up about 4.75% of the world's population.  And its gross ignorance of Evolutionary Science is insignificant on a global scale.  Its will be a great setback to American Students not adopting the Scientific way.  65% of Japan don't believe in mystical God and 45% of Europe overall and 85% of the Swiss.  Americans need to wake up and realize that they are quickly losing their overrated value in the world, especially when this country is facing great market crashes, inflation, and dollar devaluation.

Gee, I wonder why people don't understand evolution?  Richard Leakey:  "For physical change to happen, or adaptive strategies to take effect, there has to be a fundamental, underlying environmental pressure That Drives Organs Into Trying To Do Things Differently If They're Going To Survive."  Talk about a mixed metaphor!  The reason most people don't understand evolution is that the most famous scientists in the world talk about evolution as a process of  acquiring better characteristics within an organism's own lifetime.  What he should have said during the capitalized portion of the quote above is something like "acting upon populations which contain variation, which provides the opportunity for statistically greater reproductive success to organisms which have a 'derived' feature or features."

Evolution is just a farce, Why you might say?  Let's begin with the human genome, a very complex , sophisticated coding mechanism with various amino acids and various sequences that give millions of different genetic instructions ....very much like computer programming  which has a series of zeros and ones in different sequences, but very specific info about what the program can do, the human genome is at least twice as complex as that. The complex human brain has billions of neurons and 100s of billions of interconnections the ability to process more than 2 million bits of information in 1 second, an amazing complex organ system and we are supposed to believe that this just happened randomly by various mutations over time just doesn't makes no sense . Even the average scientist knows that mutations leads to degeneration rather than improvements. Furthermore, there has never, ever been an intermediate species, found. I mean NEVER FOUND. I've always thought that Darwin was an average scientist at best and he somehow gets credit for discovering made up BS. Science is supposed to be about proof and evidence, not just about a made up theory which just sounds plausible

+SuperSlartibartfast Opinions do not serve as valid arguments. Evolution is the process of progressive development which can't result from mutation, meaning to deviate from consistent development. Mutation occurring in the human DNA results in cancer not adaptation. Humans are able to adapt to changes in nutritional substrate, environment, UV radiation exposure, weather along with numerous other vicissitudes, all within a single generation. Humans possess endo-cellular impediments to reign in mutative processes notably the SIR (silent information regulators) proteins.Limited overexpression of the Sir2 gene results in a lifespan extension of about 30%,[9] if the lifespan is measured as the number of cell divisions the mother cell can undergo before cell death. Concordantly, deletion of Sir2 results in a 50% reduction in lifespan. Mutation within cells emanates from substrate cleavage which facilitates cohesive  repeat units in DNA to  form loops or circles initiating apoptosis. The SIR proteins avert both substrate cleavage and catastrophic gene expression. The human body conducts millions of processes, most in greater complexity than described above, concurrently and you hold to the prevarication that all human systems arose by chance? Really?!
Report spam or abuse
+Mark Slovensky For someone who seems to understand (or at least can cut and paste Wikipedia articles) something about genetics you are simply incorrect to make a blanket statement such as "Mutation occurring in the human DNA results in cancer not adaptation" in fact most mutations are neutral and certainly not cancerous, that's not to say that some mutations don't lead to cancer. Your main thrust though still seems to be that human DNA is too complicated to have arisen by chance

Why is it necessary for these characters to propagandize? "We're Afrocentric!" "African apes...European angels"...White European males draw those things." There have been a number of very significant fossil hominid/hominoid finds discovered in Europe and Asia. Thanks to the 'Out of Africa' mantra these discoveries have been largely ignored: Ramapithecus 12 million years old from India, Oreopithecus bambolii 9 million years old from Italy-and bipedal!, Dryopithecus 11.5 million years old found in Hungary, Spain, China. The earliest anthropoid (monkey), Darwinius (called 'Ida') is 47 million years old and the fossil was found in Germany. The oldest cave paintings have been found in Europe, and Indonesia (over 35 thousand years old).  I'm sick and tired of the Globalist Climate-Changers like Leaky and Johanson.

To of my great hero's. As for the anti-evolutionist who chose to refuse to use critical thinking the changes are gradual as the differences between yourself and your parents. Also that extinction of those who do not meet the challenges of the environment oft happen to species. For example passenger pigeons blackened the North American skies in the 19th century are now extinct. Similar things happen in nature due to temperature, rainfall, predators, food sources, diseases, etc. Anyone can see extinction by natural means often to. Fools just have to open their eyes.

+J Farrell [which Bible ?] The KJV, what else is there ? [where learning this stuff ?] Well. started with reading Clarence Larkin, several decades ago. A good discussion is at http://www.icr.org/bible/Genesis/6/4/ [human intermarriage between peoples of various countries] If we read Daniel 2:43 and 2:44, this is hardly "human intermarriage". This is the devil's last short-lived, spectacular fiasco If we observe how the evidence for sub-human hybridization is being presented, then (1) The devil is taking apart the Darwinist paradigm piece by piece, (2) the probability that super-human hybridization took place increases. (3) a new paradigm will be built, based on a pseudo-Biblical mish-mosh that will have Ken Miller, Michael Behe, and Francis Collins all singing Kumbaya.

"KJV...what else is there?"  -Ah, yes the very same Bible that the Apostle Paul used, I believe.  You do realize that many more Greek manuscripts of the Bible have been found since the 17th century that have aided scholars in translation though, right? I'll check out this discussion you mentioned, but if you're following the teaching of one guy in particular, I'd say that's a bad thing.  It's always best to consider the arguments from many different angles, even those with who believe the opposite of what you do. Be careful out there.  Oftentimes one perspective seems right until the arguments against that perspective are challenged.  (Proverbs 18:17)

No, and that's not what evolution is about. It's about all life we know of on Earth being related – in and of itself. It doesn't deal with what's "beyond" that. I'm not sure what it is you're trying to prove by saying that evolution can't account for a blood vessel. It is cells that build the blood vessels of a child. Yes, all the 65,000 miles. Cells are part of life here on Earth.

We call evolution a fact because the evidence is overwelming. You clearly need to really look into evolution a little more thoroughly than you have. Have you not seen hominid fossils or looked at the gene similarities or understand that allele changes and natural selection is a fact which farming, bio-genetics and otherr industries use as their mainstay? It doesn't really matter what you think --the fact of evolution is out there for the vast majority of researched+ educated people

Thank you Nullifidian for explaining in detail your take on this. The facts are, William Miller said from the beginning that Jesus would come back in the Jewish year 1843 (to March 21 1844), no one set any other dates except for October 22 1844 which is when a huge event occurred in heaven. Ellen White never predicted Jesus' imminent return. It is true that spiritualism is the prevalent religion of the world today as any flick of the tv channel will quickly prove. Evolution isn't science.

Would that be the "remnant church" that emerged from TWO failed prophecies about the apocalypse, one in 1842 and one in 1844? White herself made several predictions about the return of Jesus and the last days that singularly failed to come off. Meanwhile, evolution can be used to make exact predictions of the location and characteristics of fossils and actually find them where they're predicted to be, like Tiktaalik discovered in Devonian strata on Ellesmere Island. Science is the better prophet

You simply assert it happens, proffer 'just-so' stories to try and use what you are attempting to explain as evidence for your explanation (circular reasoning), etc. You have a library of insults and tactics meant to avoid dealing with the fact that you have no actual evidence and if you had any, the debate would be academic and thus over before it began.

Hi. Good questions. We cannot go back into the past, but we can look for evidence. However, keep in mind that in a court of law, the evidence may be "overwhelming," yet false. Also, note the emotional nature of the debate. Is there give and take on both sides? This is not about science - it is more like a Cowboy-Redskin football game! No evolutionist worth his or her salt will give an inch to a creationist. They call names, they mock, they do anything but have an objective conversation. Look out

yes dinosaurs do have teeth and chickens can grow teeth.... they follow suit.... depending on the type of dino... you glorify a god... but at the same time.. think its skill levels are that of a complete fucking moron... the truth here is this.... all books are man made.... it is as clear as day for someone who is honest about it.... the stories made by man about this ideal progenitor is simply an opposite reflection of their own miserable existence.... instant magic creation is bollox!

And again RedStarBelgradefan continues the conversation, giving more proof that he was mistaken in his previous post. So be it.

wired.com/wiredscience/2009/11/speciation-in-action/ we have observed birth of new species through a common ancestor, OBSERVED it, and we have thousands of transitional fossils, in our part of the family tree alone we have autralepithecus afarensis, anamensis, garhi and so on ad then we see younger fossils that look much like us, homo habilis, erectus, floresiensis, rudolfensis, neandertalhensis, heilderbegensis and so on, all step by step evolution from lower primates to us ;)

think about how genes are actually spread. once you put the fact that DNA is always spread via procreation (i.e. you share genes with your parents and grandparents before them) together with the precise hierarchy that life can be broken down into, it becomes clear that the pattern that emerges is in fact a family tree. the same exact branching pattern is observed when you compare creatures by anatomy, genetics, and age of fossils. that is no coincidence.

ffs --the evidence is extensively peer reviewed--you would know that if you had ever actually researched evolution. In fact the wealth of evidence for allele diveristy and natural selection is beyond sensible debate If you really have changed your mind about evolution --you have done it against both science and reason and-possibly for religious reasons There is no real debate --creationism is a pseudo science that has no credibility whatsover in the real world of science. So stop pretending

I was all into the "Forbidden Archaeology" stuff (even bought one of their books) but I've come to learn there had been some fudging of facts. So, I have distanced myself from it as i have no need for this type of thing. If you could tell me in a nutshell what exactly you wanted me to know that would be great.

Yeah, a "huge event occurred in heaven" on October 22, 1844. I just love the idea that eternal and timeless Heaven operates on the Gregorian calendar. Perhaps it's like one of those large trading firms with clocks on the wall in all the different time zones, except here it's a calendar for every planet. Jupiter must be fun. With a rotation about its axis of as little as 9.84 hours and a revolution about the sun of 11.86 Earth years, those 10,583 Jokes-a-Year desk calendars must be a RIOT. Cont.

See how easily you are fooled Seth? Venter in no way made a synthetic cell. Not close. Not within light years. You fell for his fable and so many others, which is why you believe the way you do. You have fallen for a pile of fables, and you are so sure you are right and scientific. Try skepticism. it's much more fun.

Oh, no Sunny Jim, gravity hasn't been observed likewise with atoms. Those are merely theoretical concepts. The only thing you can observe is an atom bomb falling on Hiroshima/Nagasaki and exploding. But you cannot see why that bomb falls and why it explodes without those two theories. The thing about evolution is EXACTLY the same. Evolution itself is not even the issue because evolution is a fact and that theory explains how evolution works.

Well actually yes it is synthetic in that is was an in vitro reproduction of essential genetic material with added tailored genes for flair that do produce viable proteins all of which demonstrates an astoundingly accurate understanding of the complexity of not only genomics but also proteomics. It is a landmark achievement and although it uses a template it is entirely man made. Synthetic does not mean novel as is the mistake of several (distinctly christian) bioethicists.

It's not like the cells just started to create blood vessels, just like that. They've had quite some time to practice. :) Babies with blood vessels hasn't been along that long compared to the age of the Earth. But I guess what you're trying to say is that it's so incomprehensible to your mind that it must be a supernatural being that designed it? Anyway, bad science is to deny proper evidence that are withstanding peer reviewed scrutiny. Evolution is one of these things that can stand the test.

Evolution Theory has nothing to do with Venter's work. I wonder why you continue to yap about the dude anyway. The guy did some amazing stuff in his field, but why is defining what he did exactly so important to you? Wheter or not Venter succeeded in what he claimed to be doing is utterly irrelavent to evolution theory. Wheter or not Venter deserves a nobel prize or a spot in the hall of shame is utterly irrelavent to evolution theory.

Why does Mr./Ms. Barkeroni tell lies about the leader of the Seventh-day Adventist church? Perhaps he/she is telling lies in other areas too?

Not only is that a demonstrably false statement, it has no bearing on the topic of biological evolution. Science is a methodology not an ideology. There are plenty of liberal and conservative scientists where I work. Not one of them has ever brought their political leanings into the lab since it is irrelevant to scientific inquiry. Also to further the point all of them accept biological evolution as the best explanation for diversity despite their ideology.
