http://www.chadsorianophotoblog.com/2011/03/canon-eos-rebel-t3i-verdict-and-video.html A 1080p video shot with the Canon EOS Rebel T3i at 29.97fps. Edited with iMovie'09 and used Quicktime at best...

wow. digital zoom is acceptable up in the 3-5 range. Excellent video.

Make sure your camera settings match your video editor sequence preset. I try not to use the factory presets on my NLE and just punching in the 1920x1080 progressive settings myself.

It is not possible to shoot photos with the 3x-10x digital zoom. It is only possible with 1080p video. You can do a screen grab of the video but it will only be 2 megapixel.

How do you get it to upload in 1080p? Mines always 720... @canon1dm4

@iMAClover21 As of now, the record button can only be controlled remotely and not the zoom. You cannot treat Canon HD Dslr's as conventional camcorders with continuous auto focus during video capture. Although this a major drawback, the outstanding video quality makes up for the negatives.

thanks very much for the info, but one question. why does the quality of the image fall off so badly at 10X ? it seems really soft and muddy. i notice the lens is the 100 L macro which is a VERY sharp lens. so why does the 10X look so much worse? i thought the idea would be 10X digital zoom without giving anything up! haha! the centre of the lens being the sharpest? so, whats going wrong? i ask because im a surf photographer and cant afford a 800mm lens. reach is king in surf photography.

@kimchiyuk Yes. The digital zoom feature of the T3i is only enabled in 1080p in 30p and 24p rates. No 720p or 640p. Just Full HD.

Do the 600D make a noise everytime it autofocus like on the 550d?

@wilsocn The T3i is outstanding in image and video quality considering the price and small size. Go ahead to my link in the description for a full review of the T3i/600D with image ISO comparisons and more videos.

@drilanaj The AF system for video is the same for the 500D/T1i as well. The 500D does not have an in camera input for external microphone as well as no manual exposure control for video and audio.

If I were to use a rode mic, would you still hear the buttons clicking?
Report spam or abuse
Cheers for the quick reply. :) you wouldn't happen to know if the AF system is also the same as on the 500D ?

I thought I was going to get wet in the last shot!

I have a question. when you are recording in movie mode, does it auto focus like a video camera? or do you have to use the lens? plz respons soon :D -thanks

Can you help me I have the same camera but when I try and record it does for a couple secs then I get "video recording has stopped automatically" do you ever get that?

@johnallenish In a very brief nutshell, 1080p describes the horizontal progressive scanning lines of a video image during a period of one second of time. In that brief second, the image scans 24 times from the top of image to the bottom. I am oversimplifying this complicated process, so I suggest you do a Wikipedia search on 24p and 30p pertaining to film capture.

@johnallenish You are very welome and enjoy your soon to be new 60D/

Can the t3i zoom farther if it's taking photos, if so how far?

@SarahMonster90 You have to manually focus in digital zoom. To achieve the best critical focus, digitally zoom to your desired focal length and manually adjust focus. In digital zoom mode, everything will be focused correctly when you perform your maneuver.

@Canon1dm4 Thats weird I have a Kingston Class 6 32gb maybe it sucks? Maybe I should just get a class 10

@kimchiyuk I suggest the T3i for you. Go to the link above and you will see gallery links of the 60D and the T3i. You can compare the image quality and body differences yourself. You will not be disappointed with the T3i.

is compatible whit Mac OS X lion ?

@MrCheespuff No, it does not focus like a conventional video camera and you have to manually focus during video recording.

Cool to see this. I ordered the T3i yesterday. Hopefully its here before the weekend so I can take it out and play with it a little bit. Looks pretty good from what I can see though.

@macadameane On the T3i, I had the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS lens set at f/2.8, the shutter at 1/60th and ISO at 200.
Report spam or abuse
@Canon1dm4 Sorry, what I mean is the picture settings, sharpness, contrast etc. I have a 7D and am not sure what the t3i has, a similar menu.

@thalesal I am using the Transcend 32gb SDHC Class 6 flash memory card.

@kennmmanproductions Well noise will not be your problem but camera shake from pressing the zoom buttons. At that extended zoom range you will need a tripod and extra help from the built in IS in the lenses to reduce camera shake.

i bought mine last week ,,it's nice camera :) Nice video as well ~

@eXistenzialSocialist Unfortunately, the T3i only shoots at 1080p at 29.97fps and 23.97fps. To minimize the rolling shutter, I set the the shutter at 1/60th for 30p or 1/50th for 24p or 1/125th for 60p. I try to keep my ISO to 160, but in the case of the T3i where there is no small speed increments, I set it too ISO 200. Plus, I keep my panning nice and slow, as well.
Report spam or abuse
this is probably a stupid question, but is there a zoom button or do you just use the lens?
Report spam or abuse
@kennmmanproductions The original Rode VideoMic and the new VideoMic Pro are rubber mounted and it isolates the AF and IS noises from the in camera audio.

@bkajanetty Although the Nikon 5100 claims their continuous AF during recording "works", the T3i has "AF Live" mode that uses contrast for AF during video recording. I have used the Canon "AF Live" and only seen the Nikon "continuous AF" in action during video recording. Both Canon and Nikon AF modes are not practical. They still hunt for focus and is unreliable in low light conditions. I can only suggest to prefocus the camera before recording or just use a conventional camcorder.

@madquiver2 I would never expect a prosumer crop sensor to ever replace a $20,000 plus Canon L lens to zoom in on a subject with equivalent quality. Although, the digital zoom is cropping a 18mp sensor to a 2 mp equivalent at 1080p video, so the resolution is present. Maybe the single Digic IV chip of the T3i cannot process the digital zoom as well. I have nothing to compare this zoom video test because the T3i is the only Canon HD DSLR with this feature.

oh wow, the digital zoom is absolutely beautiful...... droool.

if you say 1080p at 24fps. i don't know what 24fps mean and how it works :( and i don't see the use of a shutter speed if you're recording a video :( can you answer this pls? thank you!
Report spam or abuse
I loses some edge and crispness in the zoom but not much great camara I must say
Report spam or abuse
@drilanaj Yes, you are correct. The AF system is identical on the 550D and the 600D. To minimize any lens motor sounds during recording, use an external mic with a shock mount to isolate noise.

i was just wondering if the digital zoom can be controlled by a remote control.. say if you were taking a video of yourself and wanted to zoom in. and does it autofocus? really thinking of investing in this camera as it seems to have better features than the t2i for making videos.

@HBSSTC I only get that message when my memory card is too slow and the camera buffer gets to capacity. I personally use Transcend Class 6 or higher SDHC memory cards with no problem.

thank you for posting this the 10x looses a bit of quality which I had expected but at 3x it still looks pretty good. What lens did you use? also curious about settings
Report spam or abuse
@reinventlovexx Yes, there is a zoom button to activate the 3x to 10x zoom. Go the link in the description for more information about this fabulous feature.

@baita83 You are welcome! I did not expect much at 10x but I was still impressed anyway. I used a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS at f/2.8, shutter at 1/60th and ISO at 200. I would choose ISO 160 like the Canon 60D but the T3i does not have those increments.

@macadameane No problem...I set my Picture Styles to Standard. Custom adjust the Sharpness to 5, the Contrast to 0, the Color Tone to 1 and Saturation to 1 as well. I hope that helps.
