Mieders Alpine Coaster (with no brakes!!)

by davidjellis • 9,540,916 views

Amazing alpine coaster in Mieders, Austria, riding with no brakes! All your questions are answered here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2unbiYChnX8 Off-ride footage of the ride is here...

This video went viral for me in 2011 - would you ride it without braking?

Would YOU brake?

Just a little :-) Everyone needs a little madness in their lives!

It's all downhill fast from here...

Something to DO before you die - an alpine coaster with no braking!

I just want this sort of thing near where I live. I'd ride that every day.  but of course, there's nothing like that here in boring old suburban England...
Report spam or abuse
It's worth the visit :-) There are loads of alpine coasters in Germany, Austria and Switzerland so you could do a trip and visit a few of them - I must do that at some point!
Report spam or abuse
+davidjellis Yeah I might do one day, sounds great!
Report spam or abuse
2015 ainda está funcionando???
Report spam or abuse
+João Alvez Yes, it is working - operates in the summer months only
Report spam or abuse
Report spam or abuse
I don't see it, but i think the sings say ,,Bremsen" what means ,,Brake"
Report spam or abuse
Where is that place at.. that shit looks fun to do
Report spam or abuse
Mieders in Austria - in the winter it is a big ski resort - but this is how they have fun in the summer months!
Report spam or abuse
Ah yes. I do remember seeing this before. It's so much simpler than the Imst coaster, and 640m "tall"!  You should take a GPS to measure max speed.
Report spam or abuse
+davidjellis I totally get it. It's like the difference between riding a motorcycle, and riding on the back of a motorcycle.

+Docktor Jim you hit the nail on the head with your comment,

This is insane.  Curious about what the actual cart/seating area looks like.   #coasters   #alpinecoaster   #thrillride
Report spam or abuse
Check out the off-ride video to see what the carts look like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA-k3G1F7k0
Report spam or abuse
Thank you +davidjellis I was curious about those carts.  They looked pretty secure even at those crazy speeds
Report spam or abuse
Pity you didn't soot it in 3D... that would be Ace...
Report spam or abuse
The video was filmed in 2005...I don't think they had that technology back then, at least at prices mere mortals could afford? I must admit I have never been tempted to get into 3D TV...I am loving the HD improved quality, but 3D always seems a bit gimmicky. What IS ace was actually riding it...the experience was a blast :-)

It was amazing...I think you can detect that from my voice during the ride :-)
Report spam or abuse
Looks like fun ..the cable car is boring..
Report spam or abuse
This is much more fun than the cable car :-)
Report spam or abuse
definitely will try..
Report spam or abuse
I work here, I am the guy that has to push the ride back up all the way along the tracks
Report spam or abuse
LOL - I know they go up in the cable cars :-)

I love these kinds of coasters. Are these called alpine style? Are they common?
Report spam or abuse
Yes, they are called Alpine Coasters or sometimes Mountain Coasters  - they are common in the Alps in Europe (hence the name) but increasingly US ski resorts are adding similar rides.
Report spam or abuse
At the end of the track you should launch out of your chair into a giant pie.
Report spam or abuse
Report spam or abuse
Wow,seems a good place, where can i find this coaster? What's the cost of this thing?
Report spam or abuse
Report spam or abuse
It feels a lot faster than it actually is, due to being so close to the ground and the trees etc. In real life it is also a lot steeper than it appears on the video!

Just stare at the railing ( I have a twenty seven inch high resolution monitor) and you feel just like you are on it. It made me a little dizzy. I would love to go on this.

Glad you enjoyed it Philip - it was a real blast to ride  :-)
Report spam or abuse
WOW, THAT ROCKS!!! Is there anything like that in the USA? If not, we definately need some of those rides. That beats Six Flags and Disneland combined!

Fantastic.  Just watching from my couch was intense!
Report spam or abuse
Glad you enjoyed it :-)

The reason that these coasters have no brakes is to prevent you from stopping or slowing significantly, and the coaster that started 1 minute behind you, soon becoming your suppository!
Report spam or abuse
+davidjellis I envy you that you have ridden this coaster...I may have to plan a trip to Mieders just to ride it.  I should be able to get a free ride, considering that my last name Meador, is probably very close to the pronunciation of Mieders (without the s).

+Steve Meador I was thinking the same thing...it could almost be your ride...Meador's Alpine Coaster :-)

Most of the signs are warnings for branches that may slap you in the face and some warnings for the people who don't want to ride full speed to use the breaks because a turn or airtime is coming.

Report spam or abuse
Looks like alot of fun I can hear were the weel guides are not evan touching the trac kinda scary hoping a deer or moose isn't on the trac!
Report spam or abuse
They are a lot of fun, albeit a bit scary too - there is an electrified wire along the side of most of the track to prevent wildlife straying on the rails...that could be nasty!
Report spam or abuse
Report spam or abuse
Silvio does that in his sleep.
Report spam or abuse
In order to do that you would have to sleep with one hand holding the brake lever in the 'off' position :-)

Going that fast, since there are no sides to the cart, how do you not get flung off to the side? It's hard to see how you stay on that little cart!

You wear a seat belt across your lap. It isn't much but reassuringly it does hold you in!

It's 'only' 26mph (42 kph) but it sure feels a lot faster when you are hurtling down the mountain so close to the ground and trees etc. Those bends and drops were twisty and steep!
Report spam or abuse
Was there actually n brakes r id you just ditch them?
Report spam or abuse
Glad you enjoyed the video...just watched your one (we call them Toboggan rides) - not aware of any serious injuries on those, although you can indeed come off the rails and injure yourself (mainly cuts and bruises, but not life threatening?). The one I rode you cannot come off the track, but the steepness and speed is very scary!

Austria is pure bliss for holiday. I've been there twice now. so awesome.
