Amazing alpine coaster in Mieders, Austria, riding with no brakes! All your questions are answered here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2unbiYChnX8 Off-ride footage of the ride is here...

This video went viral for me in 2011 - would you ride it without braking?

Crazy alpine coaster - would YOU use the brakes?
Report spam or abuse
you can't use brakes on a coaster if you hope to reach the end.  I'm curious about hitting wild animals.
Report spam or abuse
There is an electrified fence for most of the length of the track...although there is always the risk of something jumping out or flying into your path!

One for the Bucket Lists - riding an extreme Alpine Coaster without braking!

OUÏ  OUÏ...ça me donne la nausée, ça va vite..Très très vite...Merci pour ce voyage.

I just want this sort of thing near where I live. I'd ride that every day.  but of course, there's nothing like that here in boring old suburban England...
Report spam or abuse
It's worth the visit :-) There are loads of alpine coasters in Germany, Austria and Switzerland so you could do a trip and visit a few of them - I must do that at some point!
Report spam or abuse
+davidjellis Yeah I might do one day, sounds great!
Report spam or abuse
I so very much want to ride that!

2.8km long - a lot of fun!

How does it stop
Report spam or abuse
+davidjellis hey.. it is very close to the town I am from and I have done that coaster ride in Mieders several times since its very first day it had opened. it really is fun!  a short comment though on the brakes: the car has an automatic brake that does limit its speed to max 40km/h. ;) But still - without manual braking (using the lever) it is pretty fast and really cool!
Report spam or abuse
Hi Elizabeth - yes, I am aware of the centrifugal brakes that set a maximum speed of 42kph on the cars...you can hear the kick in a few times on my video. It feels a lot faster than that as you are close to the ground and the hills are very steep!

Where is that place at.. that shit looks fun to do
Report spam or abuse
Mieders in Austria - in the winter it is a big ski resort - but this is how they have fun in the summer months!
Report spam or abuse
This is the very same ride another youtuber was on and violently hit a girl and knocked her out. He was very aggressive and her family kept holding him up till he lost it and hit her.
Report spam or abuse
It was indeed...not the finest moment in YouTube history to be honest. The rider was irresponsible and shouldn't have collided with the poor girl, and the family kept stopping on the route to take in the scenery (also against the rules of the ride) - split decision who was to blame - the answer was both of them, but not a good video to share!
Report spam or abuse
There's an alpine coaster video that is trending at the moment - it features a ride in the snow. Personally I prefer my coasters in the warmth of summer. This is my favourite one!
Report spam or abuse
This is in Austria - an amazing experience at full speed down the mountain :-)
Report spam or abuse
Report spam or abuse
I don't see it, but i think the sings say ,,Bremsen" what means ,,Brake"
Report spam or abuse
Pity you didn't soot it in 3D... that would be Ace...
Report spam or abuse
The video was filmed in 2005...I don't think they had that technology back then, at least at prices mere mortals could afford? I must admit I have never been tempted to get into 3D TV...I am loving the HD improved quality, but 3D always seems a bit gimmicky. What IS ace was actually riding it...the experience was a blast :-)
Report spam or abuse
Ah yes. I do remember seeing this before. It's so much simpler than the Imst coaster, and 640m "tall"!  You should take a GPS to measure max speed.
Report spam or abuse
+davidjellis I totally get it. It's like the difference between riding a motorcycle, and riding on the back of a motorcycle.

I love these kinds of coasters. Are these called alpine style? Are they common?
Report spam or abuse
Yes, they are called Alpine Coasters or sometimes Mountain Coasters  - they are common in the Alps in Europe (hence the name) but increasingly US ski resorts are adding similar rides.

The reason that these coasters have no brakes is to prevent you from stopping or slowing significantly, and the coaster that started 1 minute behind you, soon becoming your suppository!
Report spam or abuse
+davidjellis I envy you that you have ridden this coaster...I may have to plan a trip to Mieders just to ride it.  I should be able to get a free ride, considering that my last name Meador, is probably very close to the pronunciation of Mieders (without the s).

Hi David I've watched your vid prob 10 times and however modest you might be, and you are, what you did going downhill no brakes was truly admirable; putting your own safety on one side for the pure exhilaration of experiencing it for real, was really amazing. Nine million views says it all, that's a huge number of people who have, in some small way, experienced what you did, with all the dangers and uncertainty at every turn in the track. But you did it for real mate and THAT I really admire and obviously I'm not alone. Great you could share it. Stay safe dude - just watch it stepping off the pavement, sods law being what it is and all that :-)
Report spam or abuse
Many thanks John...nice words, and fully appreciated. I must admit when I originally did it I was not totally sure it would be safe NOT to brake at all, and some of those turns and drops were a lot steeper and tighter in reality than the camera does justice to. Was so surprised to have this video go viral, and it still amazes me that people continue to watch it and enjoy it...so thanks for the feedback. I will continue to look for thrills but will always play safe :-)
