NBC TODAY - Battling Baldness / Lasers & Hair Transplant Surgery

by Alan Bauman • 123,123 views

Matt Lauer and Janice Lieberman discuss the medical treatments and procedures used to treat hair loss, including Propecia, Minoxidil/Rogaine, Laser Therapy and Hair Transplantation. Hair...

+Robert J Zoellner, I have no explanation why some celebrities have absolutely no interest in keeping or restoring their hair through effective medical and surgical procedures and others do. In addition, some seem to have made some very poor choices in terms of hair restoration. Generally, it appears to be a lack of good information and professional advice.

so dr alanbauman, can i use the laser, propecia, and rogain foam at the same time? I can afford the $500 laser, thanks.

Dr. Bauman- you're more intresting than anyone else on Today. :)

@Friendlessday, At the time NBC reported on hair growth treatments years ago, patients had to choose between hand-held lasers or in-office units. The tech has improved quite a bit since then. Today, most patients choose the portable hands-free / rechargeable 224-diode LaserCap.

ask a girl what her dream guy looks like? there most likely have hair. Its sad but true.

propecia worked for me, but it has sextual side effects and I really did not enjoy, im only 18 so yeah... I am going to try the laser comb.
Report spam or abuse
does your hair fall out when you begin taking propecia?

transplantation works.get your facts right

business is business, once everyman on earth will look the same (with hair and white teeth) what would be the new model? I'm sure some women love bald men (except the ivana trump model look of course)

Very informative. I went to a hair restoration place, Bosley Medical I think, probably 16 years ago, the cost would have been $30,000+ and I was midway to balding on the top of my head, but nowhere else. It did look like it worked and without scarring, and they did it over a period of time so that hair didn't appear to others to show up all at once. The big obstacle to me was and is monetary. Still, I wondered why the famous/rich folks don't get them-or perhaps they do, just don't publicize it!

I donno.. a few months ago I heard laser combs were just another scam.

Actually, we use laser therapy for wound-healing after transplantation as well as the hair-effects. Non-invasive treatments (propecia, minoxidil and laser therapy) do something completely different than transplants... they work on the hair you have. Transplants redistribute hair follicles but do not protect you from losing the other non-transplanted hair. You should try the laser immediately after your transplant and see the improved healing.

FUE procedures with Neograft allow large numbers of follicles to be transplanted, with NO linear scar.

how about affordable hair-loss treatment?
Report spam or abuse
@narcotect Dr. B. did the Neograft hair transplant for me which leaves no visible scar.

maybe a young bald man would like to be happy with an older woman, and maybe some women would be happy with a rich boldman (with a big cock for example), what's the problem? you are very one way thinking!!! i just hope you keep your hair Ken!

why are these products so expensive? you want them to help people, but who are they going to help besides the people who can afford to buy them.

@alanbauman It seems that everything causes and prevents cancer these days. Studies show everything. I wouldn't be surprised it tomorrow they ha a study that showed cigarettes lowering lung cancer rates.

The medical-grade hand-helds, like Erchonia THL-1 are going for around $2500.

@Friendlessday, The hair transplant before-after results are located at 1:25, 4:27 and 5:55 perhaps you missed those on the NBC Today clip? Sincerely, Dr. Bauman
Report spam or abuse
Dr. Bauman, what do you use for your hair? Your hair looks really good, do you use Propecia or Rogaine, or how about lasers?
Report spam or abuse
@ALANLEEY Those are real hair transplant patients, not actors, with real results. I guess you are not used to seeing a 'feel good' news story with a positive message, eh?
Report spam or abuse
Does the laser work in cases when minoxidil didn't worked, considering the follicles it's still alive? Why onlt the laser spots of the central ribbon of the laser hairgrow devise was lighted, and not all 36 spots?
Report spam or abuse
That laser comb is complete bullshit, if you want to keep your hair take finasteride or duasteride.

Low Level Laser Therapy has been research for more than 40 years--since the 1960's. There has NEVER been an adverse side effect reported from low level laser therapy.

@exbaldguy the LaserCap has 224 individual laser diodes that are on simultaneously during treatment. That is higher than any other prescription or commercial device. Each diode is 5mW and 650nm.
Report spam or abuse
@sharpanator You should take a look at the LaserCap, I've got a video on it.

Over a third of the actors in tv and film have had some sort of hair transplant.

That is one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard. Shave your pubes, d00d.

Doctor, I got many reports that laser didn't worked. There are people saying that companies are paying to buy doctor's fake testimonials and patients fake testimonials. On braziian doctor said people ofered money for hin say that laser was great, but he refused it and don't believe in laser for estimulate hair, just to reduce seborrhoea dermatitis.

1:25 - Combover.. lmao too funny. That guy's combover puts Trump's to shame!

I don't knoiw why some devices, like helmet with 100 lasers covering th entire head at once, are used also for 25 minutes, if the laser comb need also 15 minutes but needs to scan teh scalp area. So the comb expose only part by part of the scalp. By logic the helmet laser devices of 100 light points should be used less time to be equal in irradiation exposure duration, for a given area of scalp, to laser combs like HairMax.

In any industry, there will be companies that are devious and underhanded. Some will even try to use legal methods to remove competition. I can say with confidence, after having used laser therapy on hundreds of patients since 1999, that the treatment is working. Lasers are no 'miracle cure' but there is certainly a visible impact on hair growth as well as wound healing.

well see i got this problem... my pubic hairs seem to be thinning/balding and I tried shaving it to buffer up the thickness but still. It looks like a bird nest made of brown spider web above my genetalia, you think these lasers can help?

I am also 18 and a started using propecia. But after the FIRST day, I began feeling pain in my groin area. I have no idea what I am going to do now..

All young patients are stabilized on propecia before proceeding with transplantation.

The idea that low level laser theropy is an effective treatment for mpb is hardly shared among the majority of physicians DR. Rassam of NHI does not support the claims of lll theropy and he is an expert in the field of hair restoration with decades of medical experiance.
Report spam or abuse
Medical therapy which decreases DHT production is always first-line therapy. However, low level laser therapy is a viable method of improving the quality of your existing hair. There are MAJOR differences between portable/hand-held devices, so seek the advice of a physician (not your 'skymall' magazine).
Report spam or abuse
every laser is different. The current Sunetics laserbrush has five diodes. More advanced hand-held lasers are being developed. The Erchonia THL has only one laser but the line-beam configuration means a shorter treatment time.

This patient was young! Why make hair transplant instead of first try Minoxil, Propecia and laser? hadn't tried those methods before or just don't got results from those medicaments and laser treatment?
Report spam or abuse
Actually, there are methods like FUE and trichophytic closures that virtually eliminate the visibility of scar tissue.

Actually, it's not 'standard procedure' since his transplant was filmed live for NBC. On the same day, they interviewed six other hair transplant patients that day who were more than 1-year post-op to show results. Also, he was a late NW3 with a deep hairline recession. For a one-year follow-up story on hair transplant, check the Dateline NBC Follicle Five videos. If you are interested in Jeff's photos, let me know and I'd be happy to post the link. -DrB

I've often wondered why Matt Lauer, with all his millions, has never pursued effective treatments for his hair loss. Or has he, albeit unsuccessfully?
Report spam or abuse
In a brazilian forum other doctor siad laser works, and tried it in 58 patients, in 3 groups, One with laser, one with minoxidil, and other with both together. She said the third group (laser+minoxidil) had bether results than just minoxidil group. It's really polemic, since each doctor say one thing. Does laser alone stop androgenetic Alopecia or just slow dow?

@legalizehemp420, Hair transplants are permanent but your other hair is not... With medical treatments to stop the progression of hair loss combined with physician-tracking and follow-ups, the long term 'prognosis' is excellent for the vast majority of patients who seek and follow expert advice.

listen to Dr Group everyone... before you spend moey.

lmao matt lauer is going bald!! :D

@hemp420, The long-term prognosis for the plug-in comb lasers is not great. In my practice, the cordless hands-free 224-diode LaserCap has all but eliminated the demand for the hand-held lasers.

im only 22 years old? do people my age have this procedure? and do you reccomend any particular hair restoration company? thanks...

Report spam or abuse
Yeah, but most modern-day MALE hair styles involve a close buzz to the back of your hair. If you get a transplant, this will forever expose your scar. I can only see someone who permanently wants long hair, doing this.
Report spam or abuse
obviously it doesn't work well if the surgeon is not good, but done by a professional it works.u won' t have all your hair back but at least you'll have some hair.i think i'm going to do it

Not really, dude . . . Just as bad- only different

transplantation is f$&*(d up though. Who wants surgery on their head. Deal with the baldness. It isn't that bad.

All these men who claim Propecia causes "PERMANENT SIDE-EFFECTS" are bunch of FUCKING LOSERS!!! ALAN BAUMAN is the expert on hairloss and he says Propecia is great! Who are you going to believe? The #1 hairloss expert in the world OR a bunch of "joe-nobodies" on the internet! Don't hesitate, buy a year-supply of Propecia and start living the life-style YOU always wanted.

Finasteride has actually been shown to prevent cancer in some studies. Check the research please. Also, LLLT has NEVER caused cancer in 40+ yrs of use.
Report spam or abuse
The internet is a distortion of the reality. Think about it. If I wasn't having a side-effect and propecia was working, why would I bother going to a chat room or forum? That's why the forums may NOT be best place to get your medical information!
