Bill Nye: Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children

Let me get this straight, this group of thingymabobs creates a mortal primate that can't tell right from wrong nor good from bad. Then the Bob's tell the primates not to be naughty and eat a specific magic fruit placed in the centre of a garden but they can't tell right from wrong nor good from bad, so of course they eat the magic fruit. Isn't that blatantly entrapment?  Or blatantly insane?

Even though the hemoglobin molecule of a chimpanzee differs from that of a human by only one amino acid, I have a question.  If evolution is true, then why are humans still here, and why haven't we evolved ourselves over the extent of time we've been here?  Why is it that we voluntarily choose our own nature of life, while the chimpanzee cannot, and is kept captive by his own breed?  Here's another issue with Bill Nye's outlook.  He wants the future generation to be filled with scientists, but that's simply not going to happen.  With all the years I've been in science myself, I can tell you that it eventually becomes very dry, boring, and lifeless.  You'll never truly know why so many people in the world do not enter the field of science until you have been exposed to it.

On Saturday, I head to Death Valley, California with my spring undergraduate class. Evidence for a protracted history (more than one billion years) is wholly incompatible with YEC beliefs. Yet no creationist has taken up my standing offer to test those beliefs against the rocks. And that in a nutshell is what is wrong with religious faith. https://vimeo.com/102055931

Douglas Gasking's refutation of the existence of God: 1 The creation of the world is the most marvelous achievement imaginable. 2 The merit of an achievement is the product of (a) its intrinsic quality, and (b) the ability of its creator. 3 The greater the disability (or handicap) of the creator, the more impressive the achievement. 4 The most formidable handicap for a creator would be nonexistence. 5 Therefore if we suppose that the universe is the product of an existent creator we can conceive a greater being - namely, one who created everything while not existing. 6 An existing God therefore would not be a being greater than which a greater cannot be conceived because an even more formidable and incredible creator would be a God which did not exist. Ergo: 7 God does not exist.

Creationism in a nutshell: "I have never engaged in any activity that could remotely be confused with homework on this subject, nor would I recognize actual homework on it, nor do I understand or appreciate the homework that others have invested on the topic. However, I browsed a web page, talked it over with a minister and an MBA, and consulted a few like-minded and equally ill-informed people, so I feel confident in saying that scientists are full of cr@p."

”Nothing created everything” does not mean the same thing as, “Everything exists without a creator." Clearly, nothing has absolutely no effects. According to believers, “Nothing created god/the gods" makes sense while “Nothing created the physical universe” is unreasonable. There is no logical or rational reason for this distinction. Maybe if I put some of the words in caps and laughed like a hyena, it'll positively accentuate how correct I am in saying these things. What do you think, Zaki? ;)

I often read-over my conversations with creationists from the past few years, and with the advantage of distance, I can see where I have often gone wrong. That is where I assume, wrongly, that the creationist has at least some knowledge of the topic. A good example occurred just recently when I was talking to someone who claimed to be a biology student at university engaged in post-grad research (and I believed him). He mentioned that he was doing gravimetric tests which might explain why fossils were sorted in the column by size. "Sorted by size". Yep. After some time pondering why I couldn't get through to him, I had to ask myself if the idiot wasn't me, for believing I was talking to a normal human. And I can see where I have continued debating with these people in the past, letting many of these kinds of blunders past my guard. They don't know the basics, and we shouldn't assume they do.

+matchlockfun Even non-transcribing DNA can still have functionality even not for protein production correct...but doesn't ENCODE's studies indicate that the vast majority of the gene bases have indicate that there are at least one primary transcript...but how that seems to help the ID position to me is not clear.
Report spam or abuse
+Steve McRae Of course. We've been finding transcribed segments regularly over the years - those are th ones of most value to the IDers, because they seem to directly refute the original opinion that most (98%) DNA has no known function. But even the high redundancy of the segments known not to encode anything provably useful indicated to the researchers in the late 1960s/early 1970s that it must be retained for a reason - presumably in regulation, where the length, or integrity, of each segment was not important (that is - a period point the size of a basketball will still serve just as well as one the size the size of a pinpoint. The only way these supposedly help the ID cause is that they seem to show that Darwinian theory (which takes no account of non-coding DNA in any case) has made a prediction that ENCODE seemed intitially to refute. They offered nothing to replace the supposition util ENCODE came along, they offer nothing by way of finding further examples for themselves, and in the final anaylsis, it argues for that specific branch of ID that is diametrically opposed to young-earth creationism (Irreducibly complex vs once-perfect-now-degrading DNA)

If only those who demand evidence for evolution would shine even a fraction of their skepticism on their own mythological beliefs, they may actually find they are quite wrong. Of course this never happens. The obvious bias and double standards employed by the resident creationists here never ceases to amaze me! Perhaps even more amazing is there blindness to it. The mountains of evidence for evolution is not enough, and this is because of course evidence is not important to these people. They pick and choose when to apply it and how it is applied.  At the end of the day, God apparently needed to sacrifice himself to appease himself and save humanity from himself. Makes sense...

I would also say that Christians willfully reject & promote the rejection of any means by which truth is gained empirically in favor of a means by which no truth has ever been discovered, blind belief. Christian "faith" is actually self deception. Its continually telling oneself that rejecting the rules of the origins of knowledge can lead to knowledge, which is simply a lie. - executionerofgod Trusting that something exists that you not only can't see but have no way to assess if it actually exists is merely self deception. You only compound self deception when you grant attributes to this "trusted existence" despite having no actual experience with any aspect of it that's distinguishable from a fictional being fabricated through your imagination. Faith is the pinnacle of arrogance, rooted in the cowardice of denying one's ignorance when confronted by mystery. Faith is the deadliest of all vices, a kind of brain death, elevated to the status of virtue, & worse even than war; because with faith there can be no reasoning, no negotiating, no compromise, no diplomacy, no peace. "Only two things are infinite, the universe & human stupidity, & I'm not sure about the former." ~ Albert Einstein "Faith is not built upon evidence, but ultimately some assumption." Which is precisely why no intelligent god would demand or require it. Because even if one did happen by accident of chance to happen to worship something remarkably like the real thing (given of course that one exists), does it then reward this accident and punish those who's accidents didn't happen upon the same kind of god? If that were so, why would one worship such a god?     Why would anyone (including a god) respect unfounded beliefs unless they wish to foster the continuity of ignorance? That's just something religious people cry over because if their beliefs were under critical thought and scrutiny, it wouldn't get very far.     Do you think a god would care if you believe in him? If that was at all important to him he would provide a lot more than just isolated rumors of long past events and confirmation bias. If one thing is very clear in the bible it is that it is only that some of the kind of actions inspired by faith are pleasing to god. Sadly it's also apparent that the biblical god expects us to accept the edicts of his spokesmen without question and to know which spokesmen are his and not deceivers (despite these 2 requirements being at odds with each other and no evidence to use to discern valid truths). When you realize this book is just a huge tool to get control of populations so the clergy can live on the dole(tithe) with the cushiest jobs that a primitive barbarian could ask for, you begin to see it in perspective.

+Nicholas Christie-Blick Evidence can be interpreted many different ways to prove what you want to prove. I.e carbon dating. The exponential decay of carbon dating requires an initial value and so of course if I believe in an earth that is billions of years old I would pick an initial value that supports that. If you look at the "evidence" you will see that it is not what it seems. Again it's not reproducible, testable, or observable. Modern genetics proves evolution is impossible. Any mutation or adaptation is a loss of information not a gaining of information. It is impossible for one animal to gain information to become a different species. Morality does not come from civilization. Civilization is ever changing. Morality must come from something that is unchanging, God. Civilization bases its morals off of something not morals based on civilization. The Bible is full of sinners like me. Only one person is person was sinless ands that's Jesus Christ.

This binary argument over which theory/belief we should teach our children and saying that the other "has no place" is not beneficial to learning. By teaching one or the other, we are teaching kids to accept ideas at face value and not to think. Learning happens when ideas are challenged and positions are modified.

"I am quite sure that our views on evolution would be very different had biologists studied genetics and natural selection before and not after most of them were convinced that evolution had occurred." — J. B. S. Haldane "Our ways of learning about the world are strongly influenced by the social preconceptions and biased modes of thinking that each scientist must apply to any problem. The stereotype of a fully rational and objective “scientific method”, with individual scientists as logical (and interchangeable) robots is self-serving mythology." - Stephen J. Gould "At this point, it is necessary to reveal a little inside information about how scientists work, something the textbooks don’t usually tell you. The fact is that scientists are not really as objective and dispassionate in their work as they would like you to think. Most scientists first get their ideas about how the world works not through rigorously logical processes but through hunches and wild guesses. As individuals, they often come to believe something to be true long before they assemble the hard evidence that will convince somebody else that it is. Motivated by faith in his own ideas and a desire for acceptance by his peers, a scientist will labor for years knowing in his heart that his theory is correct but devising experiment after experiment whose results he hopes will support his position." - Boyce Rensberger

Religious faith has nothing to do with these problems. I am firmly religious with my god and I stand by him with everything.  However, I am also a man of science and believe in such. The idea of creationism is that we were here in gods image, why would god put us against a world that is constantly changing and not allow us, animals, plants, or even cognitive thinking move forward and adapt to the new environment. As a believer of both creationism and evolution, god would not move/control the entire world so we may inhabit it. Life was given the ability to move on and continue forward as other factors that even he can't control affect our way of living. I have also been firmly kicked out of my house for standing by my belief, and I don't blame the entire religion because of a few bad nuts. It is simply those people who act in those ways that are annoying, maybe even irritating. People do have a right to believe what they want as do we so don't go about your life trying to convert people, allow it to just happen. I am with Bill Nye here when he references children, I would prefer to not have more single minded people out there. Maybe those parents can show both sides to the story and allow their own children to make there choices and educate themselves to the world.

+Chris Nenshati Chris: There is no such thing as a 'darwinist'. And the only folk babbling at this site are creationist crazies like yourself. Among the most dishonest claims of creationists is the assertion that no-one is presenting any evidence. The reality is that copious evidence is readily available. Now. To you. All that is needed is the will to look at it. Among several excellent places to begin, I recommend: Jerry A. Coyne, 2009, Why Evolution is True: Penguin, 282 p. You have no evidence at all of a 'flawed theory'. The opposite is in fact the case. The theory of evolution is so well established that it is universally accepted by the academic science community. Settled science. The fossil record isn't missing any species that were 'supposed to exist'. Where are you picking up such nonsense? Science isn't blind at all. Science is the only way we know anything. The rest is make-believe.

In response to Migdalia Berrio, who came up with the "gems" in bold... The bible does not say how long it took for God to create the earth, 1 day could be a metaphor for 1 million years, who really know what happened? If 1 day could be a metaphor for 1 million years, Adam and Eve could be a metaphor for... Nah - that story has absolutely no redeeming qualities. Evolution is also based on assumptions and no one was there so who is Bill Nye to say that Evolution for a fact is real. You may as well toss fingerprints, tire tracks, cloth fragments or fibre in a murder trial because none of that matters if "no one was there" to witness the murder. He needs to let people believe whatever they want and raise their children however they want. Apparently teaching kids the Flat Earth Theory and the Stork Theory of embryology is OK too, so long as people really believe it. I don't shove my beliefs down his throat so why are these people beyond persistent to do that to us. Evolution is not a belief system. If due to circumstances beyond your control, you were unable to get a proper education to learn about evolution, I pity you. If you chose to remain ignorant despite having the recourse to actually learn about evolution, you are worthy of scorn.

Anger at God common, even among atheists ...people get angry at God all the time, especially about everyday disappointments, finds a new set of studies in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. It's not just religious folks, either. People unaffiliated with organized religion, atheists and agnostics also report anger toward God either in the past, or anger focused on a hypothetical image - that is, what they imagined God might be like - said lead study author Julie Exline, Case Western Reserve University psychologist. Thus lives are lost in disputes over who has got the best guess. 3) Many leading Christians have struggled with doubt, even openly stating their denial on occasions - eg. Mother Theresa, Pope Francis (and several past Popes), Martin Luther, John Calvin, CS Lewis, and Voltaire among others. 4) "“I think, when a man says, ‘I never doubt,’ it is quite time for us to doubt him ..." Charles Spurgeon, 'Father of Persuasion Through The Word' (Spurgeon also advocated that each sub-denomination should never associate with another).

+Alan Clarke "31.5% of the world's population denies it. Maybe you're in a state of denial?" They don't Alan. You have your own version of the deity of the abrahamic mythology. You took that fictional character and added your own characteristics and belief to it, just like all religious people. Per instance, the majority of christians accept that life has evolved and think their fictional deity had a hand in it. You don't. Thus, you have a different version of the abrahamic deity.

By that standard you should always make shit up when you don't understand something. 'But if you don't even know what was before the big bang,  It's all nonsense if you don't have an explanation..' In polar opposition to this, you don't have any answers for anything that you are capable of backing up, so by your own standards you don't have a leg to stand on at all. If we evolved why are we nice to disabled people, and offer help to them shouldn’t we let them die off, because we don’t want to mess up our natural section? +Jake Paul Jake, thank you for the clarification. With regard to looking to science for proof of God, I suppose that will never satisfy your quest, as you will never find graffiti in any galaxy proclaiming "God was here." I do believe that if one considers the mathematical underpinnings of astro physics, how exact and precise everything must be for the existence of life on earth, one could walk away believing in a higher intelligence behind it all...but, that is simply one's own perspective, not a given. For me, I look to the history of the Jewish people, including the centrality of the super small State of Israel in world affairs and crises, as proof that the God of the Bible (and not the Quran) is indeed the sovereign of world history. Every major milestone of Jewish history, including today's, was prophesied by the prophets of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament thousands of years in advance. For me, that's the proof...but, I don't expect that to speak to everyone. Even the intensity, universality, and longevity of Anti-semitism, which I believe can only be explained metaphysically, is a proof (for me) of a both the existence of a spiritual world beyond this physical one, and that world's interface with this one.

Me: Not many different things that could mean only because you already have a predetermined idea in your head about what it means. Surely it is no different than someone who describes a sky as being painted by an artists brush, and yet I'm sure you don't believe that your god sneaks around dabbing splotches of color here and there just to impress our eyes. You: Of course we let science go first and discover things. Me: Admitting that, in that case, please also admit that creationists are not scientists. You guys are merely "interpreters" (and poor ones at that) of facts that science has already discovered without ever once appealing to magick. You: And now we can see what God meant by that verse because we couldn't understand it because we didn't know the universe was expanding. Me: You are simply confirming what I said earlier i.e. that you guys are prepared to ride the coattails of people who actually do the hard work of discovery.

+Daniel Butler 'which can mean 24 hours or a long finite period of time.' Yeah, that's not what I was talking about, so 'swing and a miss'. The main issue was the order in which things were done. The Beginning says it occurred in one way and Adam and Eve clearly states another. So, I ask again, which one is the real one? 'Also what kind of people (the apostles did this) would turn their back on their families, friends, religious leaders, and culture in order to follow some random guy?' Gullible, self-righteous assholes? I dunno. What kind of family would kick their 15 year old kid out of their house for being gay? 'Well if they followed Jesus everywhere and saw everything He did, they had eyewitness evidence and I find it hard to believe they could be fooled.' Again, you are acting like any of the stories are historical fact, yet ironically we can't find anything outside of the bible to confirm the stories. It's also odd that Jesus's story is uncomfortably similar to numerous messiahs that came before him.

you know what, i see why so many christians (I'm christian) don't believe in evolution. its been in our understanding that evolution doesn't exist and that humans just came from God, basically out of dust/dirt/sand?.... (nowhere). I feel like humans did come from God but I don't think that humans came from nothing. Look at the filipino race. they were asians and then Spain came over, had some fun and then the race of filipinos were born. I'm filipino and over time, we as a race changed in appearance. I feel like people did change over huge periods of time which leads to the conclusion that evolution does exist. before the catholic church had been wrong before such as the neolithic and neolithic beliefs. Humans can be wrong. we can be wrong. Catholicism can be wrong. does that mean their bad people? No, but I'm just saying we all have a possibility of being wrong and that that shouldn't hinder us from the information we have now. Im a christian and I believe in evolution. I dont think that one day chimps just turned into a human one day but i believe that over time we get smarter and smarter with some genetic traits towards survival get passed down such as phobias. why you hating?

Everything we have come to know about science would eventually be discovered again. Given a few thousand years, people would figure out chemistry, and rediscover the same elements we know now. People would once again understand biology, including its evolutionary origins. People would eventually see the motions of other galaxies in the sky, and work out the details of the Big Bang. This is the glorious part about science – it can and would be replicated. I can assure you, however, that your story about a talking snake would be gone forever." Not sure who the author is.

Christian scientists do just as a good job and evolutionist scientists. We come up with the same data. We can calculate everything the same way. We can come up with the same conclusion, but the only thing different is how we interpret the data. Aren't you skeptical of that kind of stuff? See http://creation.com/barbara-thiering-a-short-critique for a short critique on Barbara Thiering. If you don't trust that, then read what Wikipedia has to say: "James F. McGrath, an Associate Professor in the Religion and Philosophy department at Butler University in his 1996 review of the book states that Thiering's thesis lacks proof, and that she herself acknowledges that the pesher of the Revelation of St. John is her own composition." - Wikipedia "Barbara Thiering" I debated Professor McGrath (http://www.godofevolution.com/did-jesus-believe-in-a-six-day-creation-and-a-literal-adam) who is so far from early Biblical Christian theology that you would probably love him (compared to me) but not even he can take Barbara Thiering seriously. Wikipedia's assessment of Thiering gets even worse: In 1993 N. T. Wright, New Testament historian and former Bishop of Durham, wrote: "It is safe to say that no serious scholar has given this elaborate and fantastic theory any credence whatsoever. It is nearly ten years since it was published; the scholarly world has been able to take a good look at it: and the results are totally negative."

It is a serious study, and despite your pathetic attempted character assassination (by WIKIPEDIA no less!!) of one of its researchers, it remains yet to be disproven. One example of a wrong sustitutive code will do it, yet we don't have one yet. The scroll gives examples, for god's sake. If it's a fraud, it's a 2000 year old fraud. lol Incorrect Bill.. No evidence for Creation? In reality there is none for Evolution and is solely based on faith... How? a scientific method is based on the collection of Data through observation and experimentation. That's how one arrives from hypothesis to theory. And Darwin evolution says that there will be a change of kind (macroevolution),  Yet there is no Observable evidence for the Theory of Evolution, because it all happened between 6 to 100 million years ago, So with that said i question if it is really even a theory at all. It can't be seen, and is not testable over time, So my conclusion is that evolution is not really scientific fact but must be faith based. Saying that Darwin's finches evolved is a mistake, they clearly have adapted and have not become a different kind or something completely different, like a snake, they are still birds.
Report spam or abuse
+Fly WEST You: In a community that claims to be fact driven why believe in something that can't be proven? Me: The scientific use of the word "theory" does not mean "mere speculation" as the colloquial use implies. It is something that has explanatory and predictive powers, and importantly, can be falsified. For example, the theory of evolution explains why marine life evolved before terrestrial life, predicts where transitional fossils between marine and terrestrial life could be found, and can be falsified by finding evidence of the first terrestrial life in layers that are more ancient than those in which it was predicted to appear. A theory can never be proven - at best we can only say that after a scientific theory was proposed, it has been a good model for predicting and has so far failed to be falsified. The more it withstands the tests of prediction and of falsification, the more we can consider it to be "proven" but it could never be proven absolutely. You: if something has overwhelming evidence, why is it still not fact. Yet many treat evolution like it is. and even say it? i'm confused on that. Me: For similar reasons I explained above, scientific theories are not promoted into facts. Facts (such as finding marine life fossils below the fossils for terrestrial life) are what are used to support the theory.

+TheKingraptor724 DNA does not contain information like a coded program. Its information is in biochemical form. Program codes are not written in biochemical form. LOL Also, no, if you go by the Bible you must accept all of it as truth. So yes, it does state that every thing in the known universe was made in 6 literal days a few thousand years ago. Even if that were true and he only added humans here 6,000 years ago. It still would not be true because humans evolved over a period of 6 million years from the common ancestor with chimps. Furthermore, your post is illogical. You state that you must either believe that the Earth was created in a 1 in literally infinite chance (which this entire belief goes against everything science says) or have faith in a creator. By the way, lack of acceptance of evolution theory is not required for it to be correct. Evolution theory is the greatest theory of all time. Scientific theories are the pinnacle of science. It explains natural phenomena and is prove correct. It incorporates facts, evidences, and laws. There is nothing greater in science than a theory. I do say lack of acceptance because there is no belief in science.

There is evidence of God's existence everywhere, but you choose to ignore it. How many here are scientists? And how many of you take what others tell you for granted? Can you prove that God doesn't exist? Finally, when you see a car you know that some one or something made it, why would it be any different with the Universe. I'm ending this debate before any of us says something we may regret. May God show you the truth.

Where is this said proof? We don't ignore it, It does not exist. Logical fallacy, appeal to credibility. You say that sense we are not real scientists with degrees. Then we can't talk about science. I don't take any thing for granted. As for what creationists say. I know that their bullocks speech holds no water in reality. I can prove that your god does not exist. A car is a machine. Of course it was invented and made by a person. However, we do know how the Universe came to be and the various natural processes that did it. None of them speak of any god. There is no evidence supporting a god. That is why we don't believe it.

How can people agree with what this man said? That's such authoritarian and intolerant mindset... This behaviour of ridiculing other people's ideas and believes is poison in society. What's the believe in creationism interfere in how an engineer works?????????? That's absolutely retarded comparison! He also compared the fact there are similar stars to the sun in the universe with evolution. hahaha! With these "great" power of analogy I wonder how he performs in an IQ test... He actually never accomplished anything in science, only repeat like a parrot other people's theories. I don't exactly believe in Creationism or Evolution. I have the right to do so! As I never analysed the data on evolution, I'm not going to repeat like a parrot what some people say, even more those making stupid analogies such as comparing animals and stars. There are a few scientists that stopped believing evolution after analysing data and noticing how a lot were incomplete and some uncertain... mostly the evolution of cetaceans. Let's not forget 60 years ago scientists were certain the universe was infinite and always there, and now they are almost certain they were completely wrong. Then a bigot like this one makes it harder to discover different theories, because they are so certain of something that isn't really certain. And actually, some of the most outstanding scientists in human history were Creationists. This guy can dream of someday making different to humanity as Isaac Newton did.

Me: And there's the beauty of science. It is self-correcting, unlike religion which is pure dogma, delivered all too often with the threat of execution over non-belief. By the way, did you ever notice that when science corrects itself, it is NEVER because someone reached into a 2,000 year-old text and said "Hey - you scientists are wrong because Yahweh said so on page xxx". Instead, it is always the other way around - when scientists discovered that the universe is expanding and must have originated from a singularity, bible thumpers are always so quick to jump on the bandwagon and say "Ahhh - that's what Yahweh meant when he said 'Let there be light'" and attempt to shoehorn biblical passages into the best known science of the time. Advances in science have never come from religion.

How Did Fruit Fly Evolve with Ant Images on Wings? http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/science/fruit-fly-with-the-wings-of-beauty#ixzz2jhxlLGaH How does Darwinian evolution explain this? One commenter on uncommondescent.com posted this: "There is no way such an accurate picture of an ant could appear on the wings of a fruit fly by random chance. Why? Because evolution requires small gradual changes that must be selected over many generations. No small part of the picture can ever be selected and retained because it offers no survival advantage to the fly. Future random variations would just destroy any bit of the unrecognizable image simply because there is no survival advantage to keep it. Randomness creates chaos, not order. Besides, how did the fly survive without the ant picture on its wings to begin with?" - Mapou http://goo.gl/pbFRN4

How will believing that our grandma was a monkey and worshiping Darwin help the children grow up? Believing in where we came from and our main focus in life is a very important aspect. If creationism is not appropriate, then why spend life believing that we had no purpose to even exist on this planet? Better yet in this universe? The problem with scientists is that they try to explain everything, that's what is leading to all of this confusion.

Also let me just put out there before someone asks this question the "Big Bang" did happen, our earth did start that way. +Tyler P. "God won't let you into heaven if you do not believe in him." Why not? It would be very easy for him to present evidence that would assure I believe in him. Meanwhile he know I can't believe in him without evidence, so who is to blame for my not believing?

Michael Denton: “In Evolution: A Theory in Crisis  I wrote: “In practically every field of fundamental biological research, ever-increasing levels of design and complexity are being revealed at an ever-accelerating rate.” “It would be an illusion to think that what we are of at present is any more than a fraction of the full extent of biological design. The credibility of natural selection is weakened … by the expectation of [the future uncovering of] further undreamt of depths of ingenuity and complexity.” “The revolution in complexity has continued unabated. Many recent papers have suggested as much. In a 2010 Nature article, Erika Check Hayden remarked that the “more biologists look, the more complexity there seems to be.” Biochemist Jennifer Doudna, cited in the same article, added that it “seems like we’re climbing a mountain that keeps getting higher and higher … The more we know, the more we realize there is to know.” “This is precisely what I suggested in 1985, and nothing has caused me to revise this view.”

+Dozy Bill Nye Biologist and philosopher Michael Ghiselin described A Theory in Crisis as "a book by an author who is obviously incompetent, dishonest, or both — and it may be very hard to decide which is the case" and that his "arguments turn out to be flagrant instances of the fallacy of irrelevant conclusion. Philip Spieth, Professor of Genetics at University of California, Berkeley, reviewed the book saying his conclusions are "erroneous" and wrote the book "could not pass the most sympathetic peer review" because "evolutionary theory is misrepresented and distorted; spurious arguments are advanced as disproof of topics to which the arguments are, at best, tangentially relevant; evolutionary biologists are quoted out of context; large portions of relevant scientific literature are ignored; dubious or inaccurate statements appear as bald assertions accompanied, more often than not, with scorn. Biologist Walter P. Coombs writing in Library Journal said that Denton "details legitimate questions, some as old as Darwin's theory, some as new as molecular biology, but he also distorts or misrepresents other 'problems'" and that "much of the book reads like creationist prattle, but there are also some interesting points.

The point of the video is interesting but they should have had a better person to speak for it. Bill is just acting very arrogant by saying people who don't believe in an idea are holding humanity back and are not scientifically literate. I'm an Electrical Engineering student and doing my minor is physics and Evolution never comes up, God never comes up; no one cares what you believe in. A lot of people in the scientific community hold their own personal views on God, some are religious, some are atheists, some believe in God just to the extent of an order into the universe and you know what that's fine because they still make great physicists, engineers or mathematicians. In my experience people in the scientific community have a very open mind, I don't have to believe in your idea as a truth to understand it and use it while a better one is found, this is what science is, we know so many of our principles and laws are probably wrong and some of us even believe so but we still use them for as much they work and keep trying to find better models. I think this video just shows how arrogant Bill's views are, he thinks someone is not a scientifically literate and not eligible to vote just because he disagrees with him. I'm not trying to undermine the bad consequences of religions and everything but grouping people are literate and illiterate based on your own views, well we've seen that in religion haven't we? This is the seed of extremism, first you just want to ignore them and halt their ideology, then you want to get rid of them, then you kill them all based on your own view.

The genome is a blueprint , much like the blueprints for buildings. When looking at the blueprints for various structures you can see how those similar in design were made in similar ways using similar methods and materials. When comparing the genome of similar organisms , again...you obviously see similarities. Those that have two eyes , opposable thumbs , or even hair , share a very similar make up , they are arranged the same way. The more seperate species are alike the more genetic material they have in common. Genetic similarity is not necessarily a family tree , but more of an illustration of how species are assembled. Its pure assumption that genetic similarity is part of an evolutionary map. Yeah I know , some of you armchair geniuses are gonna come back with your challenges and smart alec comments , but only the very simple would try to deny the point I am making here.

Looking back, I note: you called for science to consider all possibilities, but omitted answering me whether it's possible you could be wrong and there's no 'designer'. You made the claim that genetic similarities don't prove evolution - a claim straight from numerous creationist websites, including evolutionnews (Discovery Institute). You said Christian scriptures spoke of a spherical earth, but actually KLV speaks of the 'circle of the earth' not the sphere. You wouldn't acknowledge my examples of how religion holds science back, you preferred to claim that science is held back when evidence-free possibilities (oogity-boogity) are not considered. You said you can't make the blind see, but you refuse to look at the Discovery Institute with me. You claimed science has never explained wings, but actually you simply reject out of hand the wealth of explanations. Why do you suppose god gave flightless birds wings? Why did he give leg and pelvic rudiments to snakes and whales? Why did he make over 350,000 species of beetle? Why did he design humans with two blind spots in their optic nerves? Why did he provide chickens with genes for teeth? and on and on.. If you find the story of Noah's Ark or the talking snake in the Garden of Eden believable, yet fail to find any truth in evolution, a subject which has been verified and proven by a confluence of science, then you clearly are not examining the arguments objectively. Then again, religion is far from objective...Objectivity is something science always strives for.

What is Human Sin and Where is it? We can see the "sins"* we inherited in the form of compulsions, emotionalism, fear, hate, lust, greed, anger, pride, basically all of humans emotional mental diseases found in DNA, that cause human to kill each other, causes war, cause screwed up ideas, screwed up marriages and screwed up children and screwed up religions, and hate anyone who has different beliefs. Division and "cultures" and all the mental permutations, constantly arguing,  are a disease of mankind.   It really is based on our poor quality degraded "genes" we all have that give rise to all the diseases and mental problems.  The results of sin are in the emotional mess and in 17000 and more genetic diseases we have along with all the pathogens we have cultivated by our ignorance.  Humans are now weak and sickly creatures proven beyond all doubts compared to any of our ancestors.  Every aspect of your life and your actions and stupidity is contained in your DNA.  It is said that we are slaves of the flesh now because we are so degraded.  We have to learn to be free from this in spite of our selves and so we need Jehovah God's grace through Jesus  that "repairs" us enough to get free from the bonds of this horrible condition of continual recycling of the same emotional suffering over and over. Why is it that women and men continually recycle the same emotional patterns that cause them to suffer?  Doing the same stupid actions over and over, never quite learning why it doesn't work.  Then going to school and learning from other screwed up humans teaching what is designed to keep the greedy rich elites and royalty in power. Also going to "church" and learning to feed the preachers more and more money in the name of "god".  There is no indication in any ancient scripture from any land that the teachers of Truth are to be paid wages for this work. The opposite is true.  If a person commits a heinous crime, they can test the DNA now and find the mental diseases (sins inherited)  that cause this**.  When a teenager commits suicide, they have found in the DNA of the brain the cause for this very short trigger of rage that causes this momentary insanity.   Basically we are diseased and will die because of inherited defects "sin".  We were not always that way and the evidence shows the same thing in all the testable evidence on humans.  Sinful actions cause more "sin" (and sin always results in suffering and death), to be passed along to the offspring. It is sort of a cumulative pattern of ignorance breeds ignorance and suffering; found in the mutations that destroy our genome one or multiple mutations at a time, depending on the diseases we have at conception.  It is easy to see this in other "tribes", nations and cultures, but it is very difficult to see this in ones self.  It takes humility to accept the fact of how weak and stupid one is and accept the Grace God gave us.  The entire "mosaic" law for health and "cleanliness" is about preserving the genome and not allowing more mutations.  It has no other purpose.  When people attack the Bible for stating that we are all "sinners" it is not stating some mystical nonsense.  We can now clearly see the sins we inherited in the form of our defective genes as clearly reflected in DNA and the rapid rise of diseases.   For some time I used to think; "How can a baby have sin?"  Now I know, they got it from their ancestors in the form of degraded emotional compulsion mental illnesses that we all have, and physical diseases that will kill us. This comes from absolutely clear evidence found in the human genome (the entire 3.2 billion base pairs of your/our DNA are messed up from the original condition of perfection.**) http://evolutionsciencenow.blogspot.com/2014/10/what-is-human-sin-and-where-is-it.html

there are many fors and against evolution and creation. I was speaking to a friend of mine just on this subject. first of all evolution is only just a theory don't be goofed in believing it is fact period. I believe the evolution theory and I am a christian. the bible doesn't rule the theory out ether. the 7 day theory on creation is massively misinterpreted due to quantum mechanics and the fact that at the time of scripture time was very differently interpreted back then. you only have to view the myan calendar to see that. but the thing that goes against evolution is the Entropy law. it says that everything decays over time so in that case how can things evolve if they are designed to die. my answer to this is simple adaptations are handed down to the next generation and over time a change in kind occurs.

Bill Nye the science guy!!!!

+Zaki Aminu Is that the best retort you've got? Unlike you, I have the decency, discipline, and personal integrity not to actually use the word that you so flippantly post without regard for who it insults or offends, even if it isn't true. And I've watched and researched his career, and his accomplishments are a very valid metric in this context. Otherwise, you'd have no reason to speak about him in the self-serving and masturbatory manner as you are right now. But you're more than welcome to your jealousy-fueled rant against Bill Nye. You also get to look pathetic in the process. :D

Bill Nye is a liberal Democrat.  So....... Another attack on religion by the left......diversity is great until liberals come across people with ideas outside their utopia.    Evolution is currently just a theory.  A theory with holes that get a pass.......

+Lee Walter You: Many debate the concept of theory and fact Me: Curiously, you didn't specify many "what". If by "many", you mean "people", I would agree with you (especially because that would include the scientifically illiterate). If by "many" you mean "scientists" then you are either completely wrong, or you have a very loose interpretation of the word "scientist".

The majority of humans are completely ignorant of science and the scientific method given to us from the giants of science. That includes the emotionally owned PhD's of Evodelusionism who think Evolution is cool or some silly ego emotional nonsense.  You have to be blind, retarded, and completely controlled by compulsions and your sex organs to believe that humans are in a good condition.   You Evotards are by your idiotic religion evidence of human genetic degradation. This is because in the 48 years of my jaunt in science, I have never seen even one speck of evidence showing that simple life could ever evolve.  And any geneticists who understand how cells are produced know it is a logical impossibility.  http://evolutionsciencenow.blogspot.com/2013/06/there-are-no-beneficial-mutations-ever.html Belief in "Evodelusionsim" is, in itself, evidence of human mental degradation.

+Gary Bell God forbids women to cut their man's balls off, by doing his fighting for him. This was a time for absolute obedience.  Because the men needed to be strong not wussies like the weak willed men of today. This was the time of getting the Messiah born and anything that would interfere with that was severely punished.  This is nothing compared to what is about to come to all those who are evil and hate their Creator.

FUNNY......I see the godless nitwits cracking on home schooling yet home schooled kids outscore public school kids by like 85 to 50 on standardized tests..... either home schooling is best OR godless nitwits want everyone to be as stupid as they are. any idea on why that is?

+badvagirl I was talking about things theists have done. You're just that ignorant and prejudiced to not notice. Shame on you.     Atheism is the belief that a "nothing" doesn't deserve acknowledgment as a "something". Nothing more, nothing less. I guess you could say our allegiance is to sanity, rationality and integrity. Since this is the opposite of the biblical god, we must be satanists.     Atheists aren't a GROUP. They are simply those people who, in their resolve to find the truth, do not accept lurid claims which are unsupported by any evidence as anything other than POTENTIALLY valid PENDING actual evidence that supports the claim. That this also happens to extend to the "god" claim has people like you putting the label of atheist on them. We're "avampireists" as well, right?     Actually atheism has plenty to offer, intellectual integrity, rationality, freedom from fear, freedom from the cognitive dissonance that plagues theists, freedom to spend the time you devoted to religion more productively, freedom to make moral judgments & laws based on fairness & what is best for society rather than what is written in a magical book, the knowledge that this is your only life & it should be cherished because when you're dead you're dead.     There is frustration and anger because the religious have a stranglehold on the government in most countries. Imagine how you would feel if every politician who ran for office had to profess his belief in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy to get elected. That means that every single politician is either starting out his campaign by lying through his teeth, or (more likely) is a fucking idiot - and these are the people who control where YOUR tax money is spent and what laws YOU will be forced to obey. Or maybe you never stopped to think about that. This is the 21st century and the intelligent people have had ENOUGH of this idiocy. It IS infuriating for good reason. There is no longer any legitimate excuse to be that stupid.     To not believe in god is to know that it falls to us to make the world a better place, we have barely emerged from millenia of barbarism.

Approximately 46% of Americans reject the theory of evolution by natural selection. That's pitiful. Many of them don't even know what the definition of "theory" means in science. You don't get above theory in science. That's the highest it goes. Gravity, is also "just a theory." I have a lot of respect for Bill Nye. This is why we're losing to other 1st world countries.

+KarbineKyle Actually, according to the journal Science, 31% of Americans reject evolution. This is slightly down from a supposed 33% in 2013. So we are slowly but surely winning.

+mikecucuk 5 million is a very low number considering the fact that the company made on average over $1,200,000 in gross sales average in all the years prior.  The year that John attacked his company we grossed 845,000, Then next year about 400,000 and the debts just got out of control.  He cost the jobs of over 10 employees and they all have stated how much they dislike my brother.  All have asked me to sue him.     Even when I defended him as being mentally ill..that still did not pay their rent nor buy food.   Then less than < 50,000 and we were wiped out 2006. There was no way to recover after that. The blessing came when I prayed to Jehovah God and now I am doing the work that I really love.  So creative and so satisfying and I don't have to sell anything.  No stress at all.  I just do design engineering as I was trained to do.  The business partner I have bought all the molds for the spas (Hot Tubs) we had and now we make them in Holland.   All I do is design, control the factory and do research and development of new products.  I love it.  If you pray to Jehovah God, with your heart you will get what you need and even far better.  John literally destroyed any possibility of any income for himself or any retirement money from his $14,600 total investment.   He has no control over his disease.

+GoodScienceForYou It's a good thing that you didn't seek to become a commercial fiction writer. You suck at making up stories about yourself and your brother. 5 million a "low number"? Right, because we all know how John screwed you out of your narcissistic sense of self-entitlement just to keep you from being your imaginary god's little cabana boy and embezzle, assault, and violate your paroles. Next time, make sure your brain has Caller ID for your ego before running your mouth of at the keyboard like a temperamental little brat. At any rate, you have failed to produce the reports that back up your numbers, and now I'll go searching for them myself. You're gonna wish you'd produced them for me when you had the chance.
