What does atheism have to offer?

by dprjones • 39,270 views

This video was made with the full knowledge, permission and assistance of thewoodsofjordan. Thank you to junosden for his help. http://www.youtube/user/junosden Thank you to all those who...

I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders when I realised that I didn't have to come up with complicated justifications and reasons why the bible made sense and waste my time and thoughts with paranoid evaluations of my ever action and even thought. Now I just live my life, try not to be too much of a dick and enjoy it.

Without watching this video, I can tell you what atheism has to offer.  Freedom and Truth.

I admire people who come the full distance from complete immersion in, to complete repudiation of fantasy.  It must take a tremendous force of will.  I only had to come about half that distance and that journey has taken all my life (more than 50 years).  People who have to make the entire trip loosing judgmental family members, seeing people, thought to be friends, drift away, travel into a much stiffer wind, up a much steeper incline then I.  I feel fortunate that the virus of religion had lost a most of its grip on my family before they could infect me.  What does Atheism offer me?  A clear conscience.  Unlike religious people who give themselves license to get away with behaviors they know full well to be wrong, because they can burn a stick of incense, light a candle, say some magic words and the “All Mighty” will let them off the hook, I must live with the full knowledge of my responsibility for my actions. I have no cosmic trash truck driver to take away burdens.  I know I must treat others as I would wish to be treated.  If I fail, I have to live with the knowledge of that failure.  So to keep the dumpster in my heart empty, I can’t keep the excess change, I must tip the waitress, I must do a fair days work, I must tell the truth,  I must be responsible behind the wheel.  I have to be my own police.  Doing well at that liberates one from the prison of self-hatred arising from the knowledge that one is screwing people over.  One other side benefit of this is anti-self-delusional philosophy is that it gets increasingly hard for others to swindle you.  The way con-artists and confidence men operate is to appeal to your greed.  This is how a person like Bernie Madoff was able to bilk so much from so many.   He appealed to their wish that they could have more than what would have been fair.  He let them convince themselves that huge unrealistic returns really were possible.  Living life with the knowledge that one must account to ones-self inoculates one against a large portion of the scammers in this world.  If you aren’t looking for an opportunity cheat someone, it will then be much harder getting you to take the bait that hides the hook that will reel you in.  A great side benefit to be sure.

John 16:20-22 (NKJV) 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. 21 A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

Is this all atheism has to offer me?   I'm quite happy as a theist so atheism is only going to take way from what I already have and that is ........ hope and a positive outlook on life and dead. If I were an atheist I would  be arguing and fighting really hard with people who believe in God, cause that's what a lot of atheists do (so why should I be different)?  Getting angry and ridiculing them, trying to make them feel bad so I can feel better about myself - how is that going to make me happy?  Now really. No one can prove that God, heaven or hell for that matter doesn't exist.  Atheism is based on a rejection of that claim. And anyone who responds negatively to my comment is only going to prove my point, that atheism doesn't really make people happy.   It only makes sinners happy who can't conform to Christianity's teachings.

Another absurd question...what does a lack of belief in god offer? Lol...how about an open mind....reason...intelligence. ..imagination...ability to discover fact or fictions.... etc...too many to list.

Non sequitur. You think that if there is a god he will reward you with a life of infinite length. But you didn't ask what sort of life would be worth living. If you answered that question then maybe you could live a life with meaning, whether it be this finite one or even the infinite one you hope for.

lol.  Your evidence is a list of people who are happier now that they have become athiests?   Sounds a lot like the multitude of people who are happier now that they have become Christians.  They traded one faith for another, it seems to me.  But of course you are going to tell me that your "faith" is not a "faith" at all but it is the "truth" and when I ask you how you know that you are going to say it is "self-evident".  Boggles the mind really.

Any religion that teaches its members to force their practices (you can not force anyone to believe anything) upon others is a false religion. There are always members of any persuasion who will try to force other people to accept their particular brand of insanity, they are to be avoided. Free will is the greatest gift of a loving God. Be well, friend.

Not self evident. It's supported by the lack of evidence. The likelihood that any one claim that has no evidence to support it is true is minuscule. Yes, the Earth was believed to be the centre of the universe until evidence contradicted it, but heliocentricity is just one claim out of the almost infinite number of claims that lacked evidence which is now supported (fairies, leprechauns with pots of gold at the end of a rainbow, half elephant half pigs). Before the evidence was gathered, geocentricity was the most rational position to take. And similarly, atheism is the most rational position to take. Especially given the evidence from theodicy, bad design, the apparent apathy of the universe to humanity (vastness of the cosmos, earth is not the centre of the universe, cosmic radiation threatens to wipe us out randomly at any time), the fine tuning of physical constants for the existence of black holes, and imperfect fine tuning for life.

I dunno about beliefs, but I know that my doubts and thoughts sometimes fucks me over. Obsessing about beliefs is a fantasy land, I'd rather keep my eyes glued to the world around me rather than be stuck inside my head with philosophical questions. I can think about these things for my entire life, but before I know it I might have missed my life all together. I guess life takes on another meaning when it dawns upon you that it actually has an expiration date and you feel like you're wasting it by engaging in endless discussions about things which cannot ever be certain. No matter what anyone says, happiness is my only goal and I'm happy to share it.

This got me thinking.  I lost my religion in my early teens, which being a boundary between life stages makes comparing happiness before and after difficult. However at the time it had two effects one good and one bad.  The good was that I no longer had to reconcile the logical inconsistencies of the religious fairy tales with the real world.  It eliminated an internal conflict which got in the way of appreciating how things fitted together and worked.  The bad is that all my mentors were genuinely religious or went along with it to fit in, thus the former were either really gullible or prepared to suspend logic in support of their faith and the latter were being fundamentally dishonest.  Since none of my mentors were to be trusted I moved onto the moral high ground which is not a good place to be for a teenage boy.  Thus it is imperative that Atheists and Agnostics declare themselves so that they can honestly mentor the next generation of free thinkers.

In some ways what atheism, or rather skeptical atheism, offers isn't all that great. It has a shot at being true, but the truth isn't always wonderful. Skeptical atheism pretty quickly shows you that atheism isn't a cure; it's just relieving a symptom (so then one starts to focus on skepticism). Skepticism offers you a vantage point where you can look out at the mass of humanity and realize that the fundamental problem of cognitive deficits is powered by a cultural and historic engine with so much mass and so much inertia that it's almost unfathomable. Skepticism offers you the truth that it's quite likely that evolution has gifted us with such a propensity for serious cognitive deficits that any large scale solution is daunting. So daunting that even figuring out how to make truly reasonable predictions about the potential for success on a comprehensible time scale is a highly questionable endeavor. Skepticism offers you the uncomfortable realization that it's not completely unreasonable to conclude that homo sapiens sapiens will not have another bootstrap opportunity. That is, if the vast majority of humanity were wiped out and the survivors reduced to paleolithic technology for more than a few generations such that almost all knowledge was lost or corrupted there probably just aren't enough easily accessible resources left on the crust to permit the natural rediscovery of key technologies. Intelligent terrestrial life might have another technological shot but not until after enough time had passed that the Earth's natural geologic/erosive and biosphere recycling was able to sufficiently replenish raw materials across the easily accessible portions of the crust. By the time that happened homo sapiens would either be extinct or simply have gone through so many evolutionary cycles of divergence and convergence as to have no genetic identity other than as one more common ancestor in the lineage of the great apes.

"are people happier when they lose their faith?" i can speak from personal experience that the answer is undoubtably "fuck yes!" its ironic when christians talk about being "born again" they usually say "it was like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders" i experienced that twice once when i was what christians call "being saved" and once when i revoked all religious beleif. That particular feeling is just a form of mass releif it is NOT some magical entity called "the holy spirit" though i am sure you will be told otherwise by your churches!

"Having religion" is fundamentally and Biblically, not the same as being a Christian. If one cannot appreciate the difference, then the survey is always going to be misleading. It would be interesting if you had asked Christians, who had formerly been Atheists, if THEY were happy. Perhaps one for the future.

Christianity is a religion. Your poor attempt to try to separate it from every other religion as a means of trying it to make it seem more unique, superior, and overall, more valid does not make it so. Faith and Religion are synonymous for the most part- people just misuse the word 'faith' in other contexts. Have you ever realized that most of the Christians who were former atheists were "persuaded" into Christianity from peer pressure and emotional assault? You and I both know all religions (at least organized ones) equally would die if people were not indoctrinated in their adolescence.

I am happier without religion, but I am also unhappy not because of losing my faith but because I have depression and it is something common within my family. Depression makes people unhappy, it is not caused because of a loss of religion, but because of bad genetics. People can be happy without a god..

Wow. The question asked is brilliant, one I've never heard before, digging deep past rhetoric and debate to simply and honestly ask "How do you feel without faith?" Fundamentalists, trembling in fear of ancient superstitions unseen, will dismiss this as hating god only to revel in sin, then imagine themselves rewarded with specialness, superiority and immortality in exchange for the mental gymnastics required to "believe." Off to happily explore other channels noted in video...

That doesn't even make sense. Do you know what secularism means? Just because you believe something without evidence doesn't mean everyone should and it sure as hell doesn't mean you can force your way into politics or social issues if your beliefs are going to be to the detriment of others. No one wants to take your religion away from you, but we have to take everyone else's faith and ideas into account too, which is why secularism is the best option, by far. Neutral ground, as it were.

@HershelAlan So it makes your life so much more fulfilling... What reason is there for you to believe that it would make my life more fulfilling? You haven't tried living my life. If you want to believe in and build your life around something that probably isn't true, then do so. But please stop calling other people fools because they haven't made your choice. It makes you sound like an arrogant arse on top of being a fool.

SDWLLB Sure, there are "some" scientists & doctors who believe, but most are deists, not theists. Those who are theists, usually have an emotionally driven reason. For some, it's fear, for others, it's the need to believe in a protective deity who floats overhead, guarding them...similar to a guardian angel, which I've never believed in, for solid, rational reasons. How much would u like to bet? U know nothing about me, my education, nor my job! But it makes no diff. The majority r not theists.

Atheism has NOTHING to offer. Reality has everything to offer, to those who are mature and responsible enough to live according to it. Christianity also has NOTHING to offer as it's an institution based on faithful belief and worship of the god of the bible. Life is only a test of faith and all that matters is what that god wants-NOT happiness, pleasure or joy, these are sins and are evil. Oddly enough, no self-proclaimed christian actually lives by this religion as many scream at others.

If the Bible is only reference, then why be a Christian? Where do you get your information? What Job got was his children killed. Perhaps you have never been a parent, but children are not replaceable. Also, in the old testament there was no heaven or hell so the eternal life thing is questionable. No, anything cannot be called torture, but eternal fire and being tormented by demons would fit the bill. God lies - John 14:13.You are a fool.

I actually do know a man who became more depressed when he became an atheist. He told me that when he lsot his faith, he went through an entire year of depression. whether or not this was caused by atheism is unsure, but when he decided to begin believing in an afterlife, and a deistic-like god, he became much happier. I am quite the opposite though, as I've become much happier, though debating with theists can get quite frustrating at times(I hate ThickShades with a passion)

Well to say that im happier as a nonbeliever as a believer in God, is not really a fair assesment. Have to say though that i have never been a born again christian. Was raised a protestant, basicly raised to believe in God without those pesky fears. Fear of death however has become larger, but the acceptance of a finite existence has allso removed that fear more or less. Faith for me is symbolised with the fear of death, and the denial of death. Existensially faith is easier than non-believe

God has murdered and raped. He shouldn't be in heaven. Have I stolen anything? Yes. Have I lied? Yes. You know what, those actions do not mean I deserve eternal punishment. And as far as thought crimes go, I don't believe those are immoral. They are thoughts, not actions, nobody what so ever was harmed by them. And if your god is going to hold such high standards, and be so hypocritical then no wonder Lucifer rebelled, because your god is an immoral monster.
Report spam or abuse
@DisturbedRenegade How can you be truly moral if you are moral out of fear of punishment, or just in order to get into heaven in the end? That is truly morality based in self interest. It takes an atheist to be truly selfless and moral. If you are a good person and an atheist, then you are a good person because of a profound understanding of the principles and necessity of goodness and social morality. If you are a good religious person, you are doing it for your own gain.

That's because your god is not a very good "person". Everyone I know and love has at some point lied to me or done something wrong that hurt me. I forgave them, without demanding that they bow down and kiss my feet. And when you consider that the god of the Bible is a far more horrible criminal than any person ever has been, he should be asking for our forgiveness, not the other way around.

I was not very happy as a child for many reasons that were beyond my control. But, I did become much happier when I moved away from Ohio and relocated to Colorado. I think new beginnings can be very rewarding. I didn't become a true atheist until my late 40s after reading the Bible. I honestly didn't feel any lose, except when I thought of all the time wasted in church listening to religious dogma. I don't think becoming an atheist changed my mood one bit. I'm just as happy as I have been.

SDWLLB "However that was my fault, I caused it to happen so I take responsibility for it." You talk as tho it's a bad thing to question or doubt your belief. I didn't lose my faith, I evolved above the need to believe in mythology. You can prayer all U want. It won't make any difference. I don't need saving. I know what the Xian religion is.

Not some watered down 2,000 year+ old, interpreted/edited/redacted/changed fairy tale, not some moral absolutism, not some politicized/religious psycho-babble about what happened in history, and certainly not some half-baked interpretation of dino-bones with bad carbon dating junk-science. Good. The whole atheist community "become an atheist because we are morally superior, religion is bad..." kind of thing is painfully ironic and results in people like atheism+. If you go on their forums most of them say they "joined atheism because of social justice". If somebody is dumb enough to change their beliefs because of their feelings they aren't really helpful in a community that's supposed to be about skepticism and rational thinking.

And I'm not sure I'd want to spend eternity with a lunatic like that." But I think it's much better to say: What "it says in the Bible" is about as important to my well-being and peace of mind as what Thor might think about the subject.
