by kblackav8or • 644,984 views

When filmed this was the 3rd time driving my 1959 CC 925 Kenworth truck. Has a 4 speed main and 3 speed auxilliary transmission and 4.10 gearing. Engine is an NHCT 270 Cummins. Out for a short...

If you click on my username, you can see more recent videos of the truck.

Nice job! You're probably shifting it in your sleep by now. :-)

Part 2  fitting a gearbox in an 1959 kenworthless

+mickycricket Really? You're not really supposed to have both sticks in neutral when you're moving as it can, as he just showed, be a PITA to get back into gear, or lock up.
Report spam or abuse
when your gears grind you definately wanna double clutch it  and give it some gas when you have the clutch in
Report spam or abuse
Man you need one of those knobs on the steering wheel, what is that like 5 full revolutions for a left turn?
Report spam or abuse
I give free twin stick lessons, just need 30 minutes behind the wheel meself :p LOL

I play this over on the occasion. Sure brings back pleasant memories. The sound of my 335 through a single straight pipe. The smell of wood dust in the heater core on a rainy and cold morning. The feel of the main box stick against my leg in fifth over. The sound of the Vickers as I turned into the mill yard. It's all there. Thanks for the post!

I drove (for a living) a  Mack B 61 with 5 and 4 in the city in the eighties. Also drove Fords with 5 and 4 with two separate trannys. The Macks had one piece tranny (two trannys bolted together).

LOve your video, love your truck.  I got a Detroit powered old Crown school bus with a 10 speed Road Ranger transmission, and it's taken me like 4 months to get fair at it.  The old time truckers were really hard workers!  Here's a video of mine if you like...    1985 Crown Coach School Bus with a Detroit 6-71 and 10 speed, Driving

Crown Coaches are cool.  Almost bought one once as an RV.

Have you thought about changing to an Eaton Roadranger? Unless you are planning on some heavy hauling, a RTO-610 would do quite well. If you are planning on heavy hauling, a RTO-910 will meet your needs quite well. I know it's not as "sexy" as a twin stick but I hated running twin stick in city traffic.

You need to check out some of the more recent videos posted of the truck.  During it's recent restoration, it had a TO-905 main with the 3 speed aux and currently it has a 10over main and the 3 speed aux.

when you get good at it reach thru the. wheel for the main

You should drive behind people and scare them, like duel. xD

Eh, what is new on an 2014 American truck when compared to this one?

Now this is some good shit old 2 stick. Air wippers sucks yes. Can you just see these so called  SUPPER truckers these days driving this ?

And the 1967 923, a 9 overdrive with a 8341and 5.29 rears. One needed to go faster and one slower. Go figure.

+George Foltz 8341 is an auxiliary transmission - Spicer.  Originally the company was Brown-Lipe then Spicer bought them out.  Old aux transmissions were called "Brownies"

I had  1957 mack with  5X4, you used 5x3, the 1st gear was "under-under" and way out of synch with the other gears. As a rule:: When you shift the brownie box thru 3 gears and are rev'ed out, you let the rpm drop to 1300rpm and shift the main box to the next higher gear, now rev the engine to 1700 rpm and catch the low brownie gear. Always main gear box first and never both boxes at once. 1700-2100 for each brownie gear. The technique is in shifting the main box up as you watch the tach drop to 1300 and touching the throttle again to bring it up to 1700rpm for the brownie gear. I could do this and touch only one tooth. If I focused I could do 0 teeth touching but it's a hassle. Down shifting is:: every time the tach says 1700rpm down shift. When in 1st with the brownie and down to 1700rpm, let the rpm drop to 1300, down shift and raise the rpm to 1700. It's all in the throttle and then catching the gear box motion. Typically this is done without any clutch at all. they're crash boxes, no synchro's

+Steven Strimling you either grind gears or ride the clutch, pick whats cheaper to repair
Report spam or abuse
oh god i would kill myself..props to the old schoolers who had to deal with this shit

ah a hummin cummins!!!!lots of trucks in the UK used Cummins- Foden, Atkinson(Seddon) Atkinson,  ERF,Guy, Ford ,Unipower, Leyland, Bedford, BMC, Daf  Scammell and always sounded great with an eminox stack or two!!! I've done twin stick work on tractors but as yet not on trucks- hope too one day!!!
Report spam or abuse
Cant find them grind them

Kenneth is right shift the aux up and the main down, and if ya ain't that fast or the pump was slow to respond ya steal one more on the aux. it was considered a fatal mistake when neutralizing both sticks

That spoiler on the car, seen in the start is looking so ridiculous. Anyway, nice truck!

My 359 is factory equipped with a 5 and 4 but I changed to a 7speed main to get some lower gears. Not that I did not like the splits I just needed a lower first gear to untrack at times. Now that the old horse is semi retired I ought to put the 5 back in but it is easy to get used to the lower gears and the splits on the 7. Enjoy your videos.

My father taught me how to drive a stick shift on a 52 International 10 yard Dump truck with a 5x4. when I was 11 years old. He taught me how to drive a truck. He used to put his arm through steering wheel and steer with bend of his arm while shifting gears.

In this video it was a 4 speed main.  I ran a 5 speed main for a while and now have the 10 x 3.  The 5 was gappy.

I ask because I don't know. Did you start off in 2nd gear? Or is that just where 1st is located? Also, how many gears does that have? I noticed you were working a 2nd gear. Great video

Windscreen wipers always work in unison.  This is the first time I've seen them working independently

Old trucks had separate air driven actuators on the wipers. They always sucked and were quite unpredictable as to speed.

Would love to do a driving test in that truck.  You would have to get extra points for all that gear changing.

The Disk Operating System of the day. The machine is in control until you treat it sweet, the way it want's to be treated.! Today, anyone can push a button and become an instant success. Try backing a 53 footer with mirrors, thay've not found a cure for that one. They just don't make them that way anymore....I miss it! When people really knew what they were doing! That's an easy truck to drive, I used to drive tractors on my uncles farm at eight with worse boxes than that, I took my test in an artic, you had to double the clutch every gear when slowing down, in the 80's there were still many large trucks in service that had prop shaft handbrakes, the gear boxes that came later were a piece of cake compared to the older wagons, such as the fuller range changer, all new trucks have PS, PA clutches, the later ones were easy to drive, I loved the Volvo's F7's of the late 80's they were brilliant to drive, the later Merc's and Iveco's got even better, I would get the wipers sorted I could not put up with that clatter for 9 hours a day.

I just see Richard Kimble riding in this truck... fun ride!

Spicer 4 speed main and 3 speed aux in this video. The truck now has a Fuller TO-905C and retains it's Spicer 3 speed aux. I also shift a whole lot better then this which was 2 years ago or so. It doesn't get driven all that often but it did get out today. I am still no master of 2 sticks but I can get everywhere I need to go with little drama.

sounds like that`s a fuller 13 or 15 speed transmission there. Good job they are virtually indestructable !!

Copy that. The 1978 A model I used to drive had the limiting switch on the top of the dash by where the fan is on yours. I miss the old machinery. The 2012 Mack I drive now is nice but the old trucks you had to pay attention and keep focused on what you were doing. Keeping the gray matter exercised so to speak.

Oy, pacific North West, raining 9 months out a year.Beautifull country. But bobtailing is no big deal for 5x4. I used to run Fraiser Canion with 218 Jimie and 5x4, uff, that was trucking. Now runing flat country down under, don' know any more where I belong.Cheers to all the liberty lovers!

Your complete failure to use proper spelling, punctuation or grammar, as well as the total dickheaded nature of what you said, is surely a testament to your character. Why don't you go do something useful with your life instead of wasting your time making yourself look like an ignorant and completely useless person?

If you can't find em, grind em

ok I actually want to find an older Kenworth w900A or L model with a single drive axle possibly an 8 speed and convert it into a ratrod style truck. I grew up in a family of truckers and then i joined the Navy last year and probably going to drive with them when I get out. Those old trucks take skill to drive. Beautiful truck by the way. If they would just build trucks like this instead of the ones they have now with all these computers and junk they would last so much longer. Good luck.

lol a fricken billion.........slow steering rack..i would hate to drive this .

well done to you for putting up an honest video. i've not yet had the pleasure of driving a twin stick yet, most that are belong to collectors now, here in Australia anyway. Great truck thanks for sharing
