Tom Cruise on the Today Show

by plimpymagnifico • 1,754,447 views

Tom Cruise battles it out with Matt Lauer, who is just being glib, whilst demonstrating his considerable "knowledge" of psychiatry.

Matt Lauer is getting information from doctors.. But doctors are paid (and payrolled) to pimp the latest product from Big Pharma. T Cruise is trying to drive a wedge into that.. People need a real, unpaid, non-marketed understanding of the state of modern western medicine TODAY

idiot. so serutonin doesnt exist? melatonin is not a chemical? dophamine ? are those not chemicals? can they not be at an imbalance when have  too much of one or not enaugh of another? does this in turn not effect a persons mood and behaviour? tom cruise is a moron

Ritalin-chemical name: methyphenidate- is a stimulant of the central nervous system. That's all it is. Nothing more. Nothing less. It saved my ass when I had an English paper due the next day and when I had finals to study for. Its not part of some pharmaceutical conspiracy. Painkillers like oxy and codeine, however...

+mr8ucket I'm pretty sure that Ritalin and meth are very different chemicals. Ritalin is much closer to cocaine than methamphetamine. I think you should just shut the fuck up seeing as how you clearly know nothing about chemistry. MDMA is almost identical to methamphetamine in shape and composition but it has completely different effects.

'studied the history of psychology' lol I seriously doubt that. He's so worried about what kids swallow but he let the scientologist church put a probe in his butt. The comments about Brooke Shields were ridiculous

In my case they didnt take any physical samples or do any physical tests, they just gave me medicine, didnt even care properly, the psychiatrist called me once after I got the medication. Are there sufficient evidence that the brains of mentally ill are different from normal brains? Perhaps even the medication changes the brain, tests should be done on unmedicated patients. I mean.. if the brains doesnt enough differ there is no good proof that the problem should be treated with medication. Behaviour based evidence is neither good enough to support a medication that affects physically. Behaviour should be treated with behaviour.
Report spam or abuse
+Hjärnan Masken I wouldnt know about those differences. There are indeed pathologies that require physiological differences to be understood. You cant explain narcolepsy, schizophrenia, or alzheimer's with cognitive or behavioral models. Theres definitely some bad circuitry going on there. But for other things as ADHD or depression, Im not so sure. As far as most psychologists are concerned, there might be a chemical unbalance that makes you abnormally anxious or sad, thats something many might accept. But simply fixing the balance doesnt make you acquire skills, doesnt eliminate abuse patterns in your home or school, etc. You still need to train the patient in problem solving, social skills, relaxation techniques and thought patterns, and fix the environment, if you want him to fully adapt. The poorest form of psychiatry means giving the kid drugs and sending him back to his drunk father, hysterical mother and school bullies. He's still in hell but at least he wont nag. I know not all psychiatrist depend only on medical treatments, since they can also do therapy. At times hospitals will make you see both a psychologist and a psychiatrist and they team up. I know I would want my medication backed up with some sort of counseling.

i do believe medication does help, but only temporary, these doctors now days throw kids on adhd medicine for just being kids, there hyper by nature, im no doctor just a registered nurse and only have a little knowledge of psychiatry but adderal  and Ritalin in my opinion (which is only mine) is ok for short periods of time but i dont not believe it should be used long term so parents dont have to actually deal with there kids behavior. now anxiety and depression medication(xanax, klonapin, valium) i do not believe should be taken for long periods of time either, maybe at times of crisis or to help cope with certain events (deaths, flights, ect). I believe u should be getting some kind of counseling and help and learn to deal with real life instead of covering it up with drugs.. again thats just my opinion i mean no offense to anyone at all

i myself struggled with depression and severe headaches and psychiatrists gave me lots of medicines. it surely gave me temporary relief but it ended up worse than i had expected. but i then turned up to natural remedies and exercise and i started getting control on myself.the feeling was amazing.medicines never treat you. it is only your approach to life. what tom cruise is telling here is absolutely correct. he has managed himself very well coping with a lot of pressure without being addicted to drugs while many celebrities have fallen to death like marilyn monroe, elvis presley and michael jackson. he is absolutely correct here

he has a point i sure as hell wasnt told the side effects of ritalin when i was a kid and looking back now id of told the dr he can shove that pill right up her ass i know one of the medications i was on for ADD the side effects was suicide and depression  GREAT so i go from being hyperactive to cutting my wrists remind me how this is a good idea?

What Tom Cruise is promoting here is the pursuit of knowledge and understanding and scrutinizing medical information told to you. There is nothing wrong with that otherwise you are like a robot listening and doing as someone else tells you. Certainly, there are some mental problems that have physical and chemical origins. I can't see how something like epilepsy for example has roots outside an innate physiological problem.  However, there are certainly many many "mental illnesses" that are myths. People assume they are not normal because they assume life is supposed to be perfect. But everyone has problems and traumas that severely damage us psychologically, and that comes with life - it is a process that comes with many obstacles and difficulties. When people face these problems they use psychiatric diagnosis as scapegoats. For example, chronic depression? Give me a freaking break! We all have been depressed at some point in our lives! If you allow your depression to take control of your life because a psychiatrists diagnosed you with it that is YOUR DECISION, there is nothing innately physically wrong with you. You can either decide to do things that will help you live a happy satisfying life like idk VOLUNTEER, get educated, spend time with your family, take up hobbies; or you can take medications to solve your problems?  Medication didn't cure Brooke Shields, it was her decision to take control of her life by engaging in things that made life worthwhile with maybe the aid of medication to mask the root of the problem. But the point is medication is never the answer for many of the "mental illnesses" out there.

Some people ARE Helped by medication. i used to work with a nurse who used to go through horrible depression. She was helped by medication. Isn't it better for her---better than committing suicide because of horrible depression? In Her case, medications were a real life saver.
Report spam or abuse
It may have helped for a while, and the placebo effect can be very strong. I've been there, thought it was working, but then suicidal thoughts came back, depression returned even stronger and no pills can alleviate. It takes HARD work, not an instant magic pill, to change the brain and re-wire thinking patterns to switch responses to negative triggers and situations.  Tom Cruise is spot on here.
Report spam or abuse
Im a psychologist and I know a little about the topic. First of all, I dont think he was saying that medications have no proven effect. I think he was referring to an issue modern psychology found with psychiatry. Psychatry, being born out of medicine as quick rehash, took in a lot of the methods and concepts, including the tendency to treat everything as ontological and organismic. Psychology says you cant treat depression as a virus that sits in your mind. In many cases, its the lack of abilities to confront a situation, and constant exposure to said situation, which lead to depression. The problem is the lack of adaptation, an interaction, which leads to certain effects in the organism, say depression. Instead of analyzing the lack of adaptation, classic or conservative psychiatry treats the "disease" as organismic, as if there was an organismic infection or as if the problem was within the person. In other words, they drug people and throw them back into their nightmarish lives. Many psychiatrists and psychologists believe that some things, like ADHD and depression, are not purely organismic but adaptations, learned behaviors or facilitated behaviors, and we should treat people's problems as an interaction people have with the environment, not a problem within the person itself. Of course, some things are actual organismic disorders, like the neurological ones. But because this organismic tendency, it is quite known that psychiatrists have assumed that some disorders are "inside the person". They also base a lot of the disorders, not on a functional/mechanical basis but on a moral basis. Take for example homosexuality, which was morally wrong. As far as objectivity goes, psycopathy is not a "disease" or an "illness", because the criteria we use is simply moral. Perhaps in a different culture, age, and place, like the militant antiquity, psychopathy was synonymous with prodigy. "Disorders" are in many cases just social constructs, moral judgments, and non scientific things that leak into a supposedly medical catalog. There are indeed a lot of issues in psychiatry, arbitrary and unscientific tendencies, as well as assumptions of organismic etiologies, which actually are well written in the history of psychiatry, and a lot of psychiatrists and psychologists have been working to root them out. They are in the school textbooks, its not just Tom Cruise. Now, Im not sure what Tom actually meant, he probably is delusional and does think psychiatric prescriptions lack evidence...

Depression is an illness that responds well to medication. He's just ignorant.

Tom Cruise is such a weak man. He let himself be taken in by lies, and he cannot admit to himself, nor anyone else, the sheer gravity of his errors and his ignorance. When caught in a lie, or proven wrong, he just tries to use eye contact and cheap psuedo-psych parlor tricks to make his adversary back down or withdraw their use of facts. One day he will kill himself and it will less sad than it should be, primarily because he has been so complicit within the Church of Scientology and their abuses of less fortunate people. What a small, ignorant piece of shit.

Tom Cruise was right! I'm an atheist myself and obviously I don't agree with his religious beliefs, but on the point of antidepressants and vitamins - he was right! The solution? Vitamin D3! Most people in the western world are vitamin D deficient. If you read some of the newer studies that have been done on the exact effects of this hormone (yes, it's a hormone), you will see the theory behind it. But: I have personally been struggling with a long list of adverse effects for most of my life, the most severe of which has been chronic depression. I live very far north, where most of the year it is impossible to get enough vitamin D from the sun, our most important source of vitamin D. I just started taking higher-than-standard doses of Vitamin D3, and my symptoms are disappearing! It is like night and day! I usually wake up feeling fatigued, even when sleeping a full night. After I started taking D3, I wake up feeling great! It has a similar effect to taking SSRI's (like Zoloft), which I had before, but without the negative side-effects, only positive ones! If you are struggling with depression, you should do some research on Vitamin D3 and try taking a higher than standard dosage of a pure Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) supplement. If you feel a drastic difference to the positive, you know that you are doing the right thing!

The problem is not how he promotes a good healthy alternative, it´s about Tom being a douchebag, and like many other´s keeping stigmas on psychiatric diseases alive. It´s really offensive and asshole-ish to talk this way about someone, who has been helped by a treatment during a time of pain and struggling with something as depression. He pretty much tells her everything she did and thought was wrong. What a dick. Also, putting all the responsibility on the person suffering from depression is sickening. Yes you have some responsibility yourself and a chance to do something on your own, sometimes, but there also needs to be a general understanding about this group, that you can´t assume all these people are capable of getting out of this black hole on their own. It is a disease and should - in my own opinion of course - be treated that way in certain aspects, without diminishing the person obviously. Then again there´s nothing wrong with options other than drugs, of course. Noone is the same is the other and that´s how it should be. I got out of my "hole" thanks to zoloft and mirtazapin. And you thanks to your vitamins. But, and correct me if I´m wrong, I´ve read only some studies (maybe two or 3 at most) done on vitamin D, but those show only a little effect on the symptoms, if any? I´ve yet to find any good study on the subject, that show evidence of strong effect on depression? Do you happen to have any to share, because I´m pretty interested in the subject?

Tom Cruise has a point. I've been evaluated for years and years and they always suspect something new. One psychiatrist thought I had borderline personality disorder, then the next one talked about the possibility of me having OCD, then ADD, then Aspergers and now my psychiatrist is asking whether I've ever experienced symptoms that could indicate that I have bipolar disorder. I've been on 20 freaking drugs. Now trying a new one... Again. Still not feeling any better.

Cruise is a shill for Scientology which purports that memory "engrams" create psychological problems.  It's far, far more "unscientific" than Cruise's critique of psychiatric drugs.  Scientology is fabulous at recruiting women in financial trouble and forcing them to cold-call potential recruits.  I am not saying anything for or against various psychiatric drugs.  I'm saying that Scientology is far more guilty of pretending what it knows about the psyche SCIENTIFICALLY than psychiatry.  Psychiatry is a woefully inexact profession but Scientology is positively pernicious.

My problem is this- he says that the ideal state is people not being on anti-psychotics, and that a departure from that would be taking them. I can agree with that, but I would also like to point out that suffering from psychotic symptoms is a far greater departure from the ideal state than the one represented by taking drugs.

Ok I understand Tom Cruises point... but if he wants everyone to yoga and veggie juice their ways into healthiness, then he's got to get the ENTIRE WORLD to do that. You can't go into the world today and expose yourself to the crazies out there and think you can come back to your house and your family at 100% peace and balance just because you exercise. You either go live where there are no other people so you can live in peace, or you have to cope to pay the bills and swim in the same river we're all stuck in just to make a buck and retire at some kind of age. Like Tom Cruise knows anything about that... he's in a money bubble on a scientology podium. I will say this, NO children should EVER be put on Ritalin type medications. Proven fact= child brains are still developing, making rx'ing anything non life-saving to a child for psychiatric conditions a band aid for lazy or detached parents. Sorry but it's true. I cant even begin to count how many kids I have seen on that poison and every single one of them was a handful at times, but just needed structure, love and patience. Not Flinstones methamphetamine. These drugs can cause lasting, even permanent alteration to the brain in a child, potentially deadly side effects and/or making a difficult child far worse from brain damage from unnecessary meds. Unfortunately it has become acceptable to script these, in part from big pharma lobbying the FDA and getting toned down safety and efficacy reports to go with them, so parents think it's no big deal. I have now seen 3 kids have severe life threatening reactions including hypertension, arrhythmia (bradycardia), and aggrivated mv prolapse. No Child should ever be having these problems, brought on 100% by a medication, just so parents can get some type of "pill help" with a child with add. Add itself is grossly overdiagnosed with up to a 90% false rate of diagnosis. Often with no differential diagnosis or second opinion. My own son was diagnosed with add and we toughed it out with structure, improved diet and teaching moments galore. Guess what? He turned about 16 or so and it has all but disappeared for good. Turns out as with most cases, he was simply hyperactive from some life stressors and dietary issues from sneaking too much sugary foods. Once we cut out the bad foods from the house and gkt it in gear he improved month after month. Some kids are worse off, yes. But Ritalin and its family have no place in a 10yr old child's body. The proof is out there, do your research before giving your child any of those things. You will thank me later down the road. :-)

Christians don like homosexuals=hate (although as a Christian, ur supposed to love everyone, but the people leading the religion hav forgotten all about going on wat te religion is all about which is loving others no matter wat and Jesus Christ is son of god. Generally, the history of medicine is probably full of disagreeable treatments from today's perspective. However, people had to do something to get healthier, they could not just sit and wait for their death. Besides, if he really suggests an alternative treatment and claims that it works much better than the conventional one, he should take full responsibility and ready to be criticised harshly for the possible hazards due to the treatments that he's been recommending.

The guy is right. These (serious) mental illnesses are almost always caused by heavy metals like lead, aluminum, mercury etc. Why do you think we know heavy metals are extremely toxic, but no one knows any symptoms? Tom Cruise was simply referring to heavy metal chelation which binds to heavy metals, such as lead, for removal. Lead is known to cause schizophrenia, therefore one can conclude that using heavy metal chelation, one can recover from illnesses such as schizophrenia. Supplements used are normally chlorella, cilantro, alfalfa, apple, pectin, NAC, vit c, onions, garlic etc etc. For factual scientific basis, in 1995 a Japanese scientist noticed patients urine had been darker after providing cilantro soup. Once urine had been tested, it was discovered that the body had been excreting high amounts of heavy metals particularly mercury.         Let me put to you in lay mans terms "why do you think there is never any cure for any disease in America despite there being so many scientists and so much research?" Also, "why do you think doctors always say vitamins and nutrition is dangerous?" In America, despite not having universal healthcare, and being the last developed nation to have universal healthcare, our countries healthcare costs are more than double of any other country.        The social process of administering antipsychotics to the sick patient is explained through the group system social status. In any group there is often alphas, gammas, deltas, omegas etc. The alpha is considered the master of the social group. In our society doctors and lawyers are often considered the alpha. The groups below the alpha will almost always struggle to gain more power, while holding much envy, greed, lust for gain, attention, and pleasure.           As another example, we can all conclude that vegetables, fruits, and supplements can very well prevent birth defects (folic acid), or strengthen bones (calcium), it is why cereal is bountiful with vitamins. Any food that is "fortified" contains added multivitamins.           In conclusion, the problem is (which continues) that American average IQ, being lower than Japan which refers to the Japanese sandwich (sushi) as dangerously disgusting assuming they will get sick (raw fish). There is nothing wrong with the Japanese sandwich, and it is not always raw fish. Problem is Americans are too dumb to understand that they can cook the fish. Americans IQ unfortunately puts their intelligence on the retarded level to where they cannot use chop sticks, sushi, or herbal doctors so prevalent in smarter Asian nations.

I also take a form of ritalin because I have attention deficit disorder (which probibly made me depressed in the first place thereby CAUSING the chemical imbalance in my brain! And post partem depression is a real condition caused by real female hormones after birth and is NOT going to be cured by exercise and vitamins! It is going to be cured by health care professionals who know a darn sight more about treating post partem depression than tom cruise does! And since tom cruise is neither female nor has he ever been pregnant he should keep his scientology nose out of womans mental health matters.

This interviewer is such an ass. He constantly put words in his mouth because that's what he wanted him to say so he could attack it. Some journalists are so full of shit.

I used to love Tom Cruise.....but he has become a nut job!

Tom Cruise knows the history of psychiatry? He should go on 'Mastermind' and choose it as his specialist subject.

This is the first time I've liked Tom Cruise. One day we will see how bad the pharma/medical industry really is, and it will be too late for some.

I'd forgotten what an ass Cruise is, not just for acting as though he's an expert when he's clearly not, but how disrespectful was he of Matt Laurer.    This reminds me of that time Jenny McCarthy made a fool of herself on Larry King, arguing with the world's authorities about the causes of autism.

And I now like Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise explains knowledgeable and simple-to-understand data about electroshock, the drugging of children, psychiatric abuses and the so called: "emotional quimical unbalance" which is SEUDO science and a fraud, which created by the Big Pharma and psychiatric for the criminal purpose of making billions out of the ignorance of the population and at the cost of their own lives and the lives of millions of children that are being forcefully drugged, and killed, by psychiatric on a daily basis. I can see that if you don't mind people ( including children) bring killed, abused, drugged, bullied and tortured with electroshock (and all kind of endless physical and mental abuses performed by psychiatric) how you would be bother by Tom's speaking against psychiatric, which is by the way: a SEUDO science and a criminal activity. Awesome Tom!!!! You rock!!!!!!!!

I'm passionate about learning, and I'm passionate about life, Matt. You should be more informed and not a money grubbing stool.  Tom Cruise owned Mindless Matt in this highly edited segment to make Matt look good, and poor whittle Matt is still portrayed as a stooge.

Tom Cruise "There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance". Wow. What. A. Piece. Of. Shit. It's bad enough for patients of psychiatric diseases to go through what they do. To have people trivialize their conditions is pure evil.

Where is the medical test that says how much chemical your brain needs Matt! Matt is just another minion. America Fooled: The Truth About Antidepressants: Part One Lecture by Dr. Timothy Scott When the facts don’t match the theory, you don’t throw out the facts; you adjust or discard the theory. Number two, the chemical imbalance theory also says that high levels of dopamine causes mental instability, things like schizophrenia. And yet we know that also old people have low levels of dopamine, young people have higher levels of dopamine. If the theory were true, there would be no mental instability among old people but it would be rampant among young people. When the theory does not match the facts, do not discard the facts; adjust or discard the theory. ========== Number five, the United States is only five percent of the world’s population, and yet our children receive the majority of the world’s psychotropic drugs. We receive over eighty percent of Ritalin, why is it American children that are so much more likely to need these drugs? Why is it American children that are far more likely to need an antidepressant? Do you realize a ten to fourteen year old in our country is thirty-seven times more likely to receive an antidepressant than a ten to fourteen year old in Great Britain, and thirty-nine times more likely to receive that drug than a ten to fourteen year old in Denmark? Number seven, the last fact I want to share, we keep finding more and more health problems associated with psychotropic drug use. You would think that these problems would be known before the first drug is ever released to the public, but they are not. In fact, the drug studies leading to their approval are very short. Most people assume they are multi year studies, they are not. Among the forty-seven studies leading to the approval of our first six SSRI antidepressants, the longest of those studies was eight weeks...[ after the drug is released to the public and millions of people very often begin taking the drug, the drug companies are responsible for doing surveys and finding out what problems are developing, so they’re supposed to make report to the FDA at six months and one year and two years and three years and four years and so forth. A recent study by the FDA found that seventy-one percent of the phase 4 studies have never even been done.

In Anatomy of an Epidemic, you also discussed the pseudoscience behind the "chemical imbalance" theories of mental illness - theories that made it easy to sell psychiatric drugs. In the last few years, I've noticed establishment psychiatry figures doing some major backpedaling on these chemical imbalance theories. For example, Ronald Pies, editor-in-chief emeritus of the Psychiatric Times stated in 2011, "In truth, the ‘chemical imbalance' notion was always a kind of urban legend - never a theory seriously propounded by well-informed psychiatrists." What's your take on this? This is quite interesting and revealing, I would say. In a sense, Ronald Pies is right. Those psychiatrists who were "well informed" about investigations into the chemical imbalance theory of mental disorders knew it hadn't really panned out, with such findings dating back to the late 1970s and early 1980s. But why, then, did we as a society come to believe that mental disorders were due to chemical imbalances, which were then fixed by the drugs? Dr. Pies puts the blame on the drug companies. But if you track the rise of this belief, it is easy to see that the American Psychiatric Association promoted it in some of their promotional materials to the public and that "well informed" psychiatrists often spoke of this metaphor in their interviews with the media. So what you find in this statement by Dr. Pies is a remarkable confession: Psychiatry, all along, knew that the evidence wasn't really there to support the chemical imbalance notion, that it was a hypothesis that hadn't panned out, and yet psychiatry failed to inform the public of that crucial fact. By doing so, psychiatry allowed a "little white lie" to take hold in the public mind, which helped sell drugs and, of course, made it seem that psychiatry had magic bullets for psychiatric disorders. That is an astonishing betrayal of the trust that the public puts in a medical discipline; we don't expect to be misled in such a basic way. But why now? Why are we hearing these admissions from Dr. Pies and others now? I am not sure, but I think there are two reasons. One, the low-serotonin theory of depression has been so completely discredited by leading researchers that maintaining the story with the public has just become untenable. It is too easy for critics and the public to point to the scientific findings that contradict it. Second, a number of pharmaceutical companies have shut down their research into psychiatric drugs [see Science, 2010], and they are doing so because, as they note, there is a lack of science providing good molecular targets for drug development. Even the drug companies are moving away from the chemical-imbalance story, and thus, what we are seeing now is the public collapse of a fabrication, which can no longer be maintained. In the statement by Dr. Pies, you see an effort by psychiatry to distance itself from that fabrication, putting the blame instead on the drug companies.
