This is a fantastic short film. I recommend everyone watch it.

+Mac Lethal Yes, recommend it. I know I will. 3 billion. Sai sucks compared to this.

I wish No Mas would make a full movie about Dock. This short film leaves you hungry for more and Dock has a lot more legendary stories like how he threw pitches at Pete Rose and Joe Morgan

"I'm High As A Georgia Pine" Better Living Through Chemistry... On this day, June 12, 1970, Ellis pitched a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres, under the influence of LSD, among other things.

Whether or not it really happened, Dock was as good a storyteller as he was a pitcher.

Well, it was the Padres . . . .

+B.J. McFunk Ellis D. was a man who had a moment. Look up Skip Guerin too. Climbed Yosemite Valleys hardest boulder problem at the time in Camp 4, barefoot and on LSD. No one has repeated the problem barefoot since. That was a moment. Exponentially physically more difficult, and with no less subtlely than pitching nine innings.

45 years ago yesterday. Said the producers: “Of the 263 no-hitters ever thrown in the Big Leagues, we can only guess how many were aided by steroids, but we can say without question that only one was ever thrown on acid.” VERY good animation using an interview with Ellis on NPR. https://youtu.be/_vUhSYLRw14

Alas, he came up one short of breaking the record for most hit batters in a single inning when he missed Johnny Bench's head by a couple inches.  But that's another story.

A tale of a baseball player who pitched a no hitter game high on LSD.

This is one of the greatest baseball stories ever, despite how messed up it is. There's a documentary on Netflix called No No: A Dockumentary and it's totally worth watching. #pittsburghpirates #dockellis #nono
Report spam or abuse
Dock Ellis, by his own admission, was an alcoholic and drug addict and that's messed up. He pitched that game so wasted on LSD that the catcher had to put tape on his glove so Dock could see him. The short video I posted here is hilarious because it was made to be. When you watch the documentary, you hear about how much he struggled with his addiction and the pain he and his loved ones were in. What makes it one of the greatest sports stories is that he was a great athlete on a fantastic team and, because he turned his life around and got control of his demons, he ended up helping others become the best they can be. He died leaving a positive legacy.

And people say acid is worse than weed, how many pitchers taking dabs have thrown a no no or discovered molecular structure? Zero, more achievements in science and other fields on lsd than on thc
Report spam or abuse
+Zachito15 That's just not true. They simply serve different purposes. The active chemicals in marijuana have been found to have amazing effects on it users. Halting ailments like epilepsy. It all has a purpose.

He looked white eyed to me when he threw a no hitter. Pretty sure thc would ware off by the 3rd inning. Acid last for 9+ hrs.

They left out the best part of the story, the day after he pitched the no hitter he showed up to the park thinking he was going to pitch.  He didnt even remember doing it and had to be told by a groundskeeper "No Doc, you pitched yesterday.  You threw a no hitter!"

I did not know this happened and I'm upset at EVERYONE for not telling me... Reminds me of NHL great Theo Fleury. He'd be high on cocaine for 2-3 days straight. He'd play a game in LA, go to Vegas the next day and spend all night on blow, then play in Phoenix that night. The brain is just crazy -- literally.

Just watched no no a dockumentary, that was a very interesting show. I knew about the famous no hitter but I had no clue he played many games high. I have no clue how a pro ball player could pull something like that off.

If he pitched a no hitter how was the ball coming at him?
Report spam or abuse
+Nick Treees It's only a hit if the batter puts the ball in play and makes it to first base. If the defense throws him out it is not a hit.
Report spam or abuse
Effectively wild. Those batters were terrified.

The thing is, he wasn't high on LSD when it happened... unless it was an afternoon game. LSD only lasts like 6 hours so he would have been coming down from that already. He said he was on Dexys and Bennys which "over 90% of the league" was on so I could see beat reporters not believing the story because he probably wasn't acting too odd. But all in all, this is one of the best pieces of media, anywhere.

As mentioned multiple times in the comments length/intensity of trip depends on dosage, body weight, metablolism, etc... not uncommon for visual effect to last 12 hours and overall 24 hours. He took a second dose the morning of the game.  He was trippng.  His remorse of not remembering and other aspects... his anecdote rings true.
Report spam or abuse
True! My last trip was strong as fuck...many years ago...I couldn't even eat a pizza slice after I managed to get to friend's house before really starting to trip...lasted 12 hrs...and I didn't score a touchdown either...lol!

First of all. There are many variables to LSD. Potency, size of dose, bmi, if other drugs are taken with it. Even if he wasn't still tripping he would be on the come down which is pretty much a less severe tripping you still feel like your tripping when you're not. You're mind still has not come back to reality. So even if he was coming down it would be a pretty incredible feat. Jesus, who really cares anyway.

Is a no-hitter a good thing? As someone who knows nothing about baseball.. I'm confused.
Report spam or abuse
+Green Eagle yes i am aware of that...we're saying the same thing. i just said that IF someone were to strike out all 27 batters, it would be a Perfect Game...not that you HAVE to strike out all 27 batters for a perfect game.
Report spam or abuse
+Cody Starken The reason why it's called a "no-hitter" even though people are physically hitting the bat with the ball is because in baseball a "hit" is a very specific thing that means the person managed to get on base specifically because he hit the ball well enough. It does not simply mean the bat struck the ball.

Doc is full of shit , just wants some attention,
Report spam or abuse
Lot's of good people fall victim to, self inflicted ,  drug abuse. It's always good to see a person with this problem turn there life around. My problem with Ellis is the way he was boasting about being high when he pitched the best game of his life, as if he were more proud of being high than throwing the no hitter. He made one bad decision when he decided to start using drugs and another when he decided to glorify it .
