I'm sitting here thinking who is the worst hipokrat, the priest or the doctor. i guess it is the priest. He gets payed to tell lies. The doctor at least have time to help a few people between the times he is murdering people.

LOL you dont pass out that fast in a gas chamber.

What a false portrayal of an execution in the gas chamber. It normally takes at least 5-7 minutes and is very painful. There's usually foaming of the mouth, coughing, facial contortions, and many other things that make it extremely unpleasant to watch.

Got in with a bad crowd and paid the ulimate price for bad judgement.

This is a replica of the gas chamber at San Quentin.  Mr. Wise was only permitted to film exteriors of the prison.  Mr. Wise wanted to show an execution in an accurate way.  He succeeded I think.

Director Robert Wise did, as part of his research for this scene, serve as a witness to a real lethal gas execution at San Quentin State Prison. He was also allowed to explore the gas chamber facility at another time and audio record the sounds of the chamber door closing and lever being dropped, which were incorporated into the film. The execution scene in the film was made on a soundstage, not the actual execution chamber,

Was Barbara Graham really that calm before and during her execution? If I was her I would be yelling and fighting until the end.

For her performance as murderer Barbara Graham, Susan Hayward was nominated for an Academy Award. She won. Sadly Susan Hayward died of brain cancer in the 1970's. She was only 57 when she died, and 41 when she was Barbara Graham

I wished they still used the gas chamber more often
Report spam or abuse
The last use of the gas chamber was in Arizona in 1999 with the execution of Walter Legrand,a German national convicted of murder

If you like, you can read witness accounts to the Lagrand execution and the one prior to that of Donald Harding. What you see in the "I want to live" video is nothing near what actually happens inside that machine however this was the first movie to depict step by step with Accuracy the events leading to a gassing.

Feel free to look up recountings of recent executions. More often than not, the condemned walked under their own power.

Murder and killing are two different words with two different definitions. Don't interchange them.

The last legal murder,or 'execution',if you insist,in England took place in 1964,thank god. Putting a criminal to death clearly doesn't act as a deterrent. All it does is exact revenge rather more than serve justice.Sadly,if certain right-wing newspapers in England are to be believed,it seems they carried out a poll of whether the death sentence should be re-introduced in England,& about 2 thirds say 'Yes',which I find somewhat alarming. It'll be a really sad day should it happen.

Ok, i have not looked into recent figures, i was merely basing my facts taken from a source written a few years back. I was just simply putting what i would call a valid point across, but one thing is certain and that is, if a murderer is put to death there is no chance of them killing again. Plenty of killers have been released and gone on to kill again, this information is readily available on the web. Anti death penalty films are powerful but very one sided, sympathy is given to the killer

@CondemnedGirl I was just looking at various pics of gas chambers and one of them had an oval logo on the door that said "Eaton".

Barbara Graham may not have been an angel, but if she really didn't commited the crime, then didn't deserve to be executed. The saddest thing is - at least in this movie - that both the media and judiciary machine (adding macho policemen that used to classify women as housewives and whores) worked for her to be convicted despite some proofs enough to clear her of the murder.

interesting, was that cyanide? they didnt use 'the chair' back then?

hey said that Barbara replied "How the hell would you know" instead. The capt. being 84 years old at one point in time remembers this conversation and he said "What could I say? She was right" ...So sad:(

I am glad that you have realized that you are an epic failure. Had you noticed what my username is and understood what it stands for, then you would know that I have absolutely no use for the sentiments you displayed to begin with. I served with far too many good men and women to let some cretin disparage them because of their ethnicity, religious views, or political leanings.

Susiehay....... Not as good as Barbara's. According to some report I read years ago she was a tough hard swearing woman and took several minutes to die. No Oscar. Retribution>coffin >grave. Wagner's version probably more realistic but even it was "sanitised" for the censors. Does anyone understand the camera angle at 5.27/30 showing the bunker light and, possibly, the top of the chamber? I can't see what it represents. Any suggestions?

Interesting observation. Could one say that all killing regardless if done by individual or by state is an act of power over the condemned?

wtf. that death was hella acted. no sign of pain, just anxiety and nervousness

This video, although good is not a representation of a death by gas chamber. The condemned would be dressed in DOC clothing, the execution process would include drooling and convulsions.

Mr. Wise's favorite picture because the director did his homework. Today, I think Barbara Graham would not have been sentenced to death.

Very true, those who want rid of the death penalty often base there facts on lies created by others. States that have the death penalty have the highest murder rates and always have had, those states that got rid of the death penalty had a lower rate of murders to begin with and since Abolishment have seen a small increase in murders, but they tell you that there is less murders in those states than in those who have the death penalty in force..

I have watced this scene a few too many times, and I'm convinced that this was filmed in the actual San Quentin gas chamber. The layout, the placement of the signs, the holding cells, the vats for the H2SO4, the metal mesh chairs, the observation gallery -- it's all too exact for a movie set.
Report spam or abuse
@deivette Yes, the shot at 5:27 shows the roof of the chamber. The roof is sort of cone-shaped, actually made up of 8 triangular pieces. The thing at the very top (above the light fixture in the shot) is the chamber's exhaust valve. It's just a big metal disk, which works like a chimney damper. It's connected to a blower that sits on top of the chamber, which ventilates the gas to the outdoors. At 3:04 the guard pulls a lever to open the valve, and at 3:07 he checks pressure in the chamber.

That's right - I was a soldier. Proud of it. What have YOU ever done to serve? if you want to allow people to be executed you first have to earn the right to speak about killing. If you saw some of what I've seen you would have a different opinion. I used to think like you - then things changed. Get a grip, grow up, how old are you anyway? It's not about 'forgiving animals'. No, I don't respect you. You haven't earned it or shown any to the rest of the world.

@CondemnedGirl Yes you're right. Thanks. I think at 3.04 he "closes" the valve and pressures the chamber to test the air(gas) tightness. Don't want to kill the spectators! You seem to have good technical knowledge. Are you an engineer? What were you condemned for? What's the outcome likely to be?

@ChamillitaryMayne actually no, it was supposed to be an allusion to the Borat film.

Even if the sequence shows the real rudimentary death mechanism, the movie fails to depict the real slow agony caused by cyanide & its choking effects. It seems "laughing gas" effect, for the sake of American people and to anesthetize the people conscience on death penalty and its cruelty.

@ogicabp4u , Er,WHERE do you get your statistics from? Yes,clearly we have a large immigrant population but they certainly aren't in the majority.Though I'm unsure as to why the size of the immigrant population in England correlates to whether or not we want a return of legalised murder!

@Clivision Its an airtight execution chamber, that when the lever is pulled releases a bag of powdered cyanide into sulfuric acid, this turns the cyanide to steam and suffocates the prisoner to death. It has not been used in over 10 years, however death row inmates still have the option to choose it in my state over lethal injection.

@leftoverpoet yes i no, its sad isnt it. My main interest is morally guilty, sure people have been set free becuase there was not enough evidence to convict in the first place or there confession was beat out of them etc etc.. but perhaps in some of those cases they actually escaped justice and were guilty, it just couldnt be proved

@estesoyojajaja Well I guess it is a very strong statement, however coming from the contry that first abolish death penalty in the 19th century I do believe the life of others is something for no man to decide and as experimented in Portugal abolishing death penalty does not increase crime rates. I always saw death penalty as using an injustice to punish another one. The term barbarians was first used by the romans refering to german tribes, I guess.

what is it actually like to be face to face with human remains? ive seen videos that i never really wanted to see. it does make a suddern feeling go through me but it doesnt make me cringe or anything. ive seen peoples arms be torn off, a young persons head torn open with a huge chunk missing, people electrocuted and killed, people mutilated (pictures) and probably more stuff i cant remember. i know none of that is really bad but i was wondering, how bad is it to be face to face with a dead body

@estesoyojajaja Firstly, learn to spell and then you might be taken seriously. Otherwise I assume that you can't run a legal system. Secondly, if you have to ask that question then you haven't moved on from the Dark Ages...idiot. Only countries that haven't worked out morality think it's ok to kill people and cover it up through the judicial system. Where do you come from?

By the way, it is the MILITARY that protects a country, not the LAWS. The police enforece social order - it's a different thing. Get educated.

Susan Hayward was a combination of great sexy glamour and a great actress. A former co star the great Frederic March said "Every inch of that Woman (Susan) is an actress! Garbo, Hepburn, Stanwyck all admired . Hayward. Director of ' I Want to Live' Robert Wise called Hayward second to Garbo in ability. This great movie and Ms. Hayward were applauded worldwide. Ms Hayward won the Oscar and received a curtain call from the Academy for the Win, something I have seen only that once RIP Susan

I like this movie, even though the story was little bit changed. I would also like to watch the remake with Lindsay Wagner, but I haven't been able to get it with subtitles at least.

As for my career, I don't feel the need to show off about it. Real men are like that, as opposed to boys like you.
