You Make The Call: Did The Catcher Drop the Ball?

by PannerVision • 20,149 views

Maybe the angle or the quality aren't the best for deciding this question here.. but the runner was originally called out, but then was called safe. So... did the catcher drop the ball at some...

Easily the right call.

+jklm4babies shut the fuck up its hard to hold onto a baseball with a runner smashing into you full speed

This is a 100% accurate call.

At 0:26 you can see the runner slid over the ball.SAFE!

He didn't call him out. He pointed at the ground. This is to let everyone know he saw the ball on the ground and then called him safe.

The umpire didn't call him out, he pointed at the ball.

He dropped the ball! It looks like the pitcher (#17) picks it up and starts walking back to the mound. It's just a bad camera angle. The home plate umpire called him out and then deferred to the third base ump who called him safe.

Just look at the body language the pitcher and catcher use after the play, they just walk back to their positions. They knew the runner was safe, then the pitcher also picked up the ball right in front of the catcher.

would have been OUT but the retarded catcher dropped the ball on the tag at the end watch the pitcher bending over and picking up the ball THE BATTER IS SAFE!!!!!!

Ummmm.. i can't actually make a call on this one because in the video i could not identify where the ball was at in any point of time.

Great job by the umpire, waiting to make the call to see if the ball was dropped. It's a cardinal rule that many umpires forget.

ball on ground, runner safe. only slight mistake is Blue started to rush the call a little, so he started the Out call and had to change his 'Out!' to "Safe!". Pause Read React , had he waited to see ball in catchers' glove he would not have been surprised. but he got it right so good job

It's too hard to see from this video. The catcher may have not had control. The umpire perhaps saw that.

Sure he did, watch the pitcher, #17 as he goes back to the mound at the end of the play. He bends down and picks up the ball. Also watch the umpire through the whole play. First he points that the ball is on the ground. Then he indicates the runner touched home, then he gives the safe signal.

safe the pitcher clearly picked up the ball after the ''tag''

Why the hell is a 70 year old pitching for at 0:40?

I love all you idiots in here who think he held on to the ball. You can clearly see the ball behind the catchers heel like CatPride said and you can see the pitcher pick it up afterward. DUHHH SAFE!!!

I don't see that he ever called him out. He was waiting to see if the catcher had secure possession of the ball, which is exactly right. When it's clear the catcher doesn't have the ball he sells the hell out of the safe call. Excellent umpiring.

It's not a changed call. The umpire never calls him out. He's pointing indicating the ball was on the ground.

You have to catch the ball to drop it...catcher never has the ball...safe.

He first points to the ball on the ground, then indicates runner touched home, then calls him safe,he never gets help from U3. The ONLY time a PU would do this is if he first makes an out call, and doesnt see a bobble or drop of the ball by the catcher. Then after the play is over, if the offensive coach argues, THEN the plate umpire may bring the whole crew together to see if they had something different. Sometimes the PU may not see the bobble, or drop due to the way the play develops.

I agree with TheRedSmasher, I did not see the at all in the duration of the video.

I realize I screwed up 2 calls recently it looked like a bang bang play but he's safe because of a dropped ball a better throw gets him
Report spam or abuse
Good Point. At the very end you can see U3 signalling "safe". It looked to me like the home plate ump originally called him "out", then he looked to U3 and then changed his call to "safe". The ump may have just been pointing to the ball, before calling him "safe".

@Xxsideshow22xX The runner scored from first base. The batter didn't score. It's not a homerun.

why did you even post this video he was obviously safe, the pitcher goes and picks up the ball. Your retarded

Great call by the Ump, thats why umpires wait for that split second b4 they make their call. Sucks when uu bang someone out and then the ball is lying on the ground, wish I could say it never happened to me, live n learn and learn to wait on your calls.
