Rossini - Overture 'William Tell' Part 2

by RupertJones • 455,145 views

The conclusion to Rossini's William Tell Overture (Theme of the Lone Ranger) performed by the Hallé Orchestra, conducted by Mark Elder at the Royal Albert Hall during the Nations Favourite Prom...

The flute solo is beautiful! As a flute player myself, I look up to these professional flutists!  I hope one day I will be as fluent as them.  I can only get there through hard work and LOTS of practice!

Rossini gehört zu meinen Lieblingskomponisten - Hier seine besinnliche und anregende Overtüre zu Wilhelm Tell zum Innehalten und Genießen.

what does the man standing really do? there is no one looking at him. they're all looking at the sheet for note i believe.. enlighten me anyone..
Report spam or abuse
He's the conductor. In all reality, the members of the orchestra should be looking at him, and only glancing at their sheet music. He dictates speed, and how loud or soft the orchestra plays. He also makes sure that the only orchestra stays at the same point in the music, rather then one part getting ahead of the other. Sometimes a conductor is also playing an instrument (usually a violin, or piano). You see this on occasion when there is a solo in the piece the orchestra is performing.

+Nicole Harris Nicole is correct, but let me add this.  It APPEARS no one is looking at him, but the musicians set their music stands to the height where they can view their sheet music AND the conductor, using peripheral vision.  So most of them are seeing him; just not looking at him directly.  And if he would have conducted the fourth and fifth measures from the end in a clear, hard 4 beat pattern, instead of going into 2 beats per measure,  the chances of the trumpet player laying a clam (cracking a note, as he did) would have been minimized.  It's a psychological trick.  The trumpet player feels more secure with 4 straight, clean beats, (and ironically, he/she may not even realize it.)

How great to see all bows go into the air at the last tone, at 05:57.

Guess what. I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more triangle!

A little slow for my tastes. Also I didn't particularly like the flute part during the slow section. Still a good performance but it seemed to lack excitement to me. The music is exciting itself but the performance didn't' help any. My favorite performance is by Academy of St Martin in the Fields

@picklenub I did the Pit Orchestra (as a violinist) senior year in High School, and I had to sit in front of the trumpets. It was a Jazz musical. 'Nuff said.

@TheStickyKeys Gotta like his expression as well. "Um okay, so when are we finished?". XD

@ThaSchwab Well, even if that is the case, why don't you acknowledge and appreciate the absolute beauty of the playing - ie. the tone, colour, phrasing etc. I'm sorry about your negativity.

@123olirob I said she cracked a lot, not that she played badly. You're a flutist, so I would think you would notice the cracks even more; many times they resulted in a noticeably wrong note. I am a musician, but while I do not play the flute, I do know what goes behind doing so, and therefore I know when something is wrong. I'm sorry we can't see eye to eye.

1:09 what a boss, musical genius right there! I hope to emulate him one day.
