TORN - EDNASWAP original artists

by andyburntguys • 335,838 views

The song "Torn" by the band that wrote and recorded it before it was taken from them. Real musicians manually playing musical instruments on a song THEY ACTUALLY WROTE. From "Wacko Magneto" 1997 *...

not a bad cover, original still the best

This is the original the other is a cover
Report spam or abuse
too bad Bush didnt cover the song. tell me the lyrics and sound of this original werent meant for Bush to play
Report spam or abuse
Same chord structure as the song "Glycerine" and a very similar guitar sound. Probably why it sounds like a Bush song....
Report spam or abuse
Bush are absolute garbage that cant make any original material, covering this song would make them shittier
Report spam or abuse
did the band agree to let Natalie cover the song? if they didn't, and as you said, it was taken from them, why they didn't do anything?
Report spam or abuse
wow how the heck did Natallie mange to turn it all pink and fluffy? This is original and brilliant version.
Report spam or abuse
this is so much better than the 90s cover

+avengedsevenfrog this original version was also released in the 90's

I really like that version too.  I'm gonna like your uncovers Robert.
Report spam or abuse
maybe the best song ever, so raw, so authentic, so not mainstream pop-rock, so not hollywood, so sincere, so not pretentious, so easy for a foreigners to understand
Report spam or abuse
Wow I had never heard this version of this song. I love it.
Report spam or abuse
I love how this mostly plays in my left ear...
Report spam or abuse
I think this totally captures the essence of the lyrics.. Its true, its honest, its raw, its torned.. Natalie just did a cleaner and more pop version of it..
Report spam or abuse
Hmmmm,Natalie make it cleaner????????? Well...........what about Trine Rein........Natalie covered hers version of this song. She recorded Torn a year erlier than Natalie and it was big hit here in Norway ))))))
Report spam or abuse
There is so much going on here...

The very beginning sounds like the beginning of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

It took too long for this to get into the heavy stuff, which I think is why it was so unknown. I mean, half the song there was no drums....bad idea from whoever decided that! If the whole song was like the parts from 2:00 ish onwards, this version would have been a radio hit :(
Report spam or abuse
+Slaytallica that's because the intro to stairway also became the "hook" of the song. It was so catchy.  Idk, I just feel like the part around 2:00, if it came in even 30 seconds earlier, would have made been a better decision. But if we're talking as a song, not a "hit" (which is not necessarily a better song), then yeah, I see no problem with it, as I liked the whole thing. But a radio station won't play it like this. They'll want it to get to the heavy chorus around 1:00 or so. So I'm not saying the song isn't good as it is, but this is the difference between Imbruglia's version and this version, really. Not just the style, but the amount of time it takes to get to the "meat" of the song.
Report spam or abuse
+NateMantle I prefer it being soft with no drums at first, I like the way the song builds up and then kicks into the chorus. It seems more emotional than just it being heavy all the way through.
Report spam or abuse
Yeah, I'm sure Edna Swap is hating all that money they were sent went Natalie Imbruglia's version charted.
Report spam or abuse
But now they have the resources to stay musicians. I don't think Nick Lowe is motivated by money, but that guy can do whatever he wants musically or otherwise. Pretty good deal I think. Endawap wrote a song that millions of people love. How awesome is that?
Report spam or abuse
+C C.B Yes plenty of musicians are financially motivated at least in part. Musicians deserve to be able to make a living doing what they do, and these guys have been able to, everybody wins. The singer writes songs for artists like Katy Perry now and makes a lot of money from that.
Report spam or abuse
This version is incredible. Seriously.
Report spam or abuse
I love how raw and fucking rock and roll this is.
Report spam or abuse
Wow, didn't know about this original. Love the guitar work; totally different feel to the song.

omg i love the original, so sad I'm only discovering this now, it is so much more than natalie's cover!
Report spam or abuse
Trine version er best ))))))
Report spam or abuse
Excellent song, sounds much better than Natalie, but thanks to Natalie this still alive ....
Report spam or abuse
oh wow. i feel guilty now that I still like Natalie's version...
Report spam or abuse
You don't have to feel guilty. Natalie's version is more pop, and the tempo is faster so it's catchier. This version is probably better to listen to if you're feeling down or something though. Natalie's version is more light hearted while this one is sadder.

Wow. Never knew Natalie Imbruglia's was a cover, and not the original.
Report spam or abuse
"Taken from them" seems a little harsh, doesn't it? I mean, Imbruglia paid them for the cover. Seems legit to me. I do prefer this version, though.

Natalia Rdz Shared on Google+ · 1 year ago
La versión original. Buenísima.
Report spam or abuse
Not a fan of this original song , her voice sounds way to " broken" ( like a heavy smoker/drunk) for me.
Report spam or abuse
The song wasn't 'taken from them'. Compulsory license was obtained, royalties were paid. Get over it.
Report spam or abuse
+James Bradford You're right, but I didn't see anyone complaining that the song was taken. Just maybe lamenting that the better version isn't the one that became popular. Unless I missed something.
Report spam or abuse
+Matt Mitchell Nevermind, I see it now, in the description. Sorry.

Report spam or abuse
I like this version, but I prefer Natalie. Don't get me wrong, this raw version is perfect. Just like Bush's early years they sounded raw as fuck and I dig it, but they had to step it up to branch further out. One Direction completely took a dump on this song tho.. :(
Report spam or abuse
This is actually quite amazing, but I can't help loving Natalie's version more, if only for nostalgia's sake. But man, do I love the guitar in this!
Report spam or abuse
I prefer the solo Strat' to the pop beat.  I still like Natalie's version (good driving music), but this is the version on my playlist for when I'm chilling in my room.
Report spam or abuse
I think that this is a completely different version then the cover by natalie imbruglia and I will say it is because of emotion. The words are the same but the meanings are different. This version is about loosing hope and being unable to move on while Natalie's version is light hearted and about a simple non life changing breakup. Both great in their own rights but they are completely different songs in structure and meaning.
Report spam or abuse
The song wasn't taken from them. It was covered two years later by Natalie Imbruglia who had a big hit with it. I'm sure the songwriters didn't mind cashing the royalty checks. Anyway, I think this version is better. It's more emotionally authentic.
Report spam or abuse
+C C.B Well, that would have been a classless thing on her part if it actually happened. What is your source for this? I doubt you copied and pasted it because of the mistakes in it.
Report spam or abuse
+C C.B same with Heard it through the grapevine, gladys knight recorded it, marvin gaye wrote it and released it after gladys' version...and same with blue suede shoes with carl perkins/elvis presley.

Report spam or abuse
I prefer the fast beat of Imbruglia's version (not a fan of slows), but the vocal of this original is much better: this girls 's got guts. Mixing the 2 would be  my favourite...
Report spam or abuse
I wish they could have convened on a 50/50 level. Natalie teen-bop kills the sensation, but does have a swing that I think could brighten the original.
Report spam or abuse
Way better than Natalie Imbruglia. That goes without saying.
Report spam or abuse
I agree that this is better, but just because it's your opinion doesn't mean it goes without saying.
Report spam or abuse
some times the remakes are better... true in this case. boy this is garbage XP
Report spam or abuse
Did you listen all the way through? It gets really heavy later in the song. I think the faster tempo and the production of Imbruglia's was better, but there is A LOT more emotion in this version. It's a rock song, while Natalie's is a pop song, and is very light hearted in comparison. They even took out some of the diminished chords from the original and replaced them with boring replacements, and the wicked guitar section was replaced by synths in Natalie's version...
Report spam or abuse
+NateMantle you're right, I much prefer the 2nd half.  Natalie's upbeat version is peppy, and may just be 'pop rock', but it's very good, and why most of us know the song.  but, yeah, maybe Melissa turned it off too soon, as most people do with new songs.
Report spam or abuse
I prefer this version.
Report spam or abuse
It definitely works much better as a slow, sorta somber song.

Oh man, I always like Natalie Imbruglia's version since it first came out, but I love the original better. This is amazing!

Props to the original makers of this song, but I think being covered by Natalie is the best thing that happened to it.

The original was better. Clarification:  This is the original.
Report spam or abuse
Ok. It's either back now or simply wasn't available via mobile. Either way... K. This is awesome!
Report spam or abuse
+Joseph Gordon Yeah it's disabled on mobile for whatever reason.
Report spam or abuse
This version is a turgid dirge. Imbruglia brought it to life.
Report spam or abuse
This original is great, but I prefer the Natalie Umbruglia version. Catchier.
Report spam or abuse
Yes, it's catchier, but to me that's mostly from the tempo change and the lighter instrumentation. But this one rocks my soul a lot more. It has a certain depth to it that Natalie's over-produced version kind of loses. I'm especially sad that they took out the wicked guitar section when they re-made it.
Report spam or abuse
Agree and I think Natalie's great video added to it's popularity.
Report spam or abuse
The woman who wrote it played in on the Stern show and it sounded great.  She played the Imbruglia version, though.  By the way, I'm pretty sure it wasn't "taken" from them.  I'm pretty sure they still make money from it.
Report spam or abuse
most of the money from a song is made from royalties from the people who WROTE/COMPOSED a song, not who sang or performed it.  every time a song is played on the radio or on stage or used in TV/ads, the writer/composer gets royalties.  therefore, i'm sure Ednaswap made out with a nice chunk of change from the popularity of the cover song, unless their manager or label screwed them over (which is common in the industry...)  in any case, i also knew of the original when i heard the cover on the radio, and i had blogged about it.  i still prefer the original because that's what i heard first and it was a rock song to me and it was a good tune.  others who heard the pop cover of it might prefer that because they heard that first.
Report spam or abuse
+silverbishounen Sounds like she's doin alright according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Preven as is this guy who co-wrote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Thornalley aaaaaaannnnd this guy who also co-wrote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Cutler.  Sometimes people do better not being the actual band.
Report spam or abuse
Haha, is your screen name and your talk of "loyalties" some kind of Asian joke?
Report spam or abuse
Always respect the originals, no matter whose version you think is better.
Report spam or abuse
Report spam or abuse
I like this one way better. She doesn't gasp after every line she sings.
Report spam or abuse
nice to know the real song writer...like the original version...sound quiet sad..blues stuff...
Report spam or abuse
This is the original.  Much more soulful than Natalie Imbruglia
Report spam or abuse
I think the description is biased considering...really what artist doesn't do covers to boost their popularity? An some songs actually sound better by other artists. This for example has better instrumentals, her voice however; is not as strong as it should be. Her voice is being drowned out. Not a big deal however, still plays nice.

Everything I knew was a lie...
Report spam or abuse
I find it incredible that the music industry goes after people who download music while they are prepared to build pop stars on the ruins of other artists...
Report spam or abuse
I'd like to see someone do this version of the song now. I like it this way.
Report spam or abuse
Disgusting! I didn't like it at all. Natalie's version is the BEST!!!
Report spam or abuse
I prefer the Imruglia version, but I study Music at PhD level, so it's OK, right? :-P

Report spam or abuse
Well, I guess we'll make an exception in your case. No accounting for the tastes of musicologist types... ;)
Report spam or abuse
A good example of how the production choices made, in the recording of a great song, is key to its success.
Report spam or abuse
For sure there is a reason the producers usually pull in more cash than the artist off the record. Most recording artists actually make the most from appearances and promotional deals.
Report spam or abuse
Bob Dylan wrote and recorded a lot of songs using actual instruments too. The other people made them listenable.
Report spam or abuse
Natalie brought it more to life indeed.
Report spam or abuse
You guys  here talk about is Natalie's version better or is this better. I personally think One Direction did it the best
Report spam or abuse
wow, used to love Natalie's version, but THIS IS IT <3

way better than the more popular version from Imbruglia...just my opinion.

I love the pace, the feel, the mood. I wish Umbruglia would have just polished the guitar chord changes and left it as is,

You can argue the copyright block, you aren't making money off of this.
Report spam or abuse
Both versions are great!! I like them both!
Report spam or abuse
She (Anne Preven) did an acoustic solo version of this song on Howard Stern that is one of the all time great live performances in my book.  I have it if anyone wants it.  Awesome.  And for the record... the Natalie Imbruglia version was an okay pop confection but the music does not convey what the lyrics are saying.  the acoustic original by Anne Preven is amazing.
Report spam or abuse
they don't sell any of their stuff on itunes germany. anyone know where i can get this song? preferably even the album it's on? but just this song would be fine already, i love this original version! it's so much more emotional and gives the words a whole new level of strength and intensity.
Report spam or abuse
props to the guy that was able to spot this dirge was a potential chart topper.

You can argue the copyright block, you aren't making money off of this.

"Stolen"? How is making a cover version stealing?
Report spam or abuse
+Jeff guitar Nelson What the heck. Anne actually met with Natalie. They were like friends back then. They all knew each other. You better get a clue. Some members from Ednaswap gave her this song to record. The bass has even been played by the same bass player like in Ednaswap's Torn.
Report spam or abuse
Agree with fandog, what is the point of getting so arsey about the cover version doing better? What's more Natalie Imbruglia did not cover this, she covered Lis Sørensen's "Brandt" version, which is a good cover version, and does all of the leg work of retooling the song towards the pop market. Lets be honest, all that is left of the original is the lyrics, and it did take someone with talent to come up with the musical arrangement to make it into a pop song.  Nothing beats the original artist for emotion, but no need to slag off people who cover songs, as many a cover version has merit.
Report spam or abuse
Actually, I gotta say that Ms. Imbruglia does it better in my opinion. The melody is a little more refined and more obviously the track is a little more polished due to it being a bigger label. Still good though, I can't imagine a way to do this song injustice without making it dubstep.

Have you heard the other version Ednaswap did on their second album 'Whacko Magneto'?  You might like that version better.
