Ancient Chinese music sounds beautiful on the pipa, a four-stringed Chinese lute, played by the amazing Wu Man.

It's amazing how many nationalities of music there seem to be in traditional Chinese music. I keep hearing pieces of Middle Eastern and little bits of English and Irish. Clearly, the other two would have had nothing to do with it, but it evokes those sounds to me, anyway.

If Western Europe was a country (instead of a region), I'd be equally amazed by all the colourful, yet distinctive styles of music between regions. And...the silk road definitely facilitated the exchange of commodity, technology, philosophy, etc between the East and West. This early episode of intercultural dialogue existed long before the Mongols, or even the Tang dynasty, which brought exotic instruments like pipa and erhu to China from the 'west'--ME/Central Asia, and in some context, India.

Although the music sounds familiar to me from film scores, I've never seen the instrument or the musicianship that creates it. Ms. Wu is a virtuoso.  Thank you

I think that,China , It is a country that made art and culture would rather in heart of the peaple deeply in the mind of them.

Wow! Beautiful instrument! And she plays it amazingly!

One to make you smile. You see this pretty Chinese lady w/ this somewhat odd-looking (to my Western eyes) stringed instrument, and you are expecting maybe  a lullaby. Instead you get something resembling hard rock.  Cool. 01/10/2015

I thank you, Wu Man! Such grace and devotion. And extremely wonderful! I see a Samurai in you. (You know what I mean) Your from China. And you may not like Japanese intent. I know what they did to your country while allied to Russian. I appreciate your musicianship in what you shared to me & the world... Love~ Charlie...

sounds like western banjo not relaxing at all!

the first song Ambush is a music to depict a famous historical battle scene. Of course it wouldn't be relaxing!

Incredible musicianship! I never really explored music involving the Pipa but I will definitely be checking out more of Wu Man's music!

It would be more accurate to say that Eruption is some sort of a 20th century American version of Ambush From All Sides ;)

pipa is awesome. i wonder, if u use nylon or gut strings, instead of steel, would it sound much softer? i like pipa cause i like idea of 100% hole - less lute(completely flat). & 4 strings gives plenty of finger room, unlike room lost with 6 stringed guitar.

I have so much trouble keeping mine in tune. I am also thinking I should use Gut string or silk strings maybe.

she has so much respect for the instrument, you can see it in every note she plays

its important to understand that this is for entertainment, imagine having to entertain an emperor in the time when these pieces originated. I am sure that they would be quite impressed!!

Malmstein invented the scalloped frets in Pipa, when he was very young and he was an apprentice louthier in ancient China. :) Jokes aside, I have seen Wu Man live and she is out of this world.

@Quack4Zac The other way round I thnk. The lute evolved from the Oud, which was brought back to Europe during the Crusades, which start before but continued through Marco Polo's time. I don't think the lute as we known it evolved until after Marco Polo's times. This was all long after the 9th century, which she says pipa music dates from (and probably startered earlier).
Report spam or abuse
it is very old and classical Chinese instrument, I think maybe guitar is originally from this, and Marco Polo took it to Italy.
