Confessions of an INTP (EDIT: INTJ)

by Marshmallow Moo • 32,417 views

EDIT (11/16/2011): Sorry for the false info, everyone. Turns out I am an INTJ with ADHD. Hopefully INTPs can still relate! O HAI. Just a stupid little monologue about my life as an INTP...

wow... this vid helped because i felt the same way. intj with add explains more about myself than intp

I know your not an INTP (INTJ) but have you ever taken the test and felt like that you didn't feel like your type. I have taken it multiple times and I get INTP.

Have you read or skimmed through David Hockney's book "Secret Knowledge"? He really wanted to call it "Lost Knowledge" since the book is about his re-discovery of how Rembrandt and Caravaggio and others made their paintings. Since most art historians cannot draw or paint, they never talk about technique. Have a nice weekend.

From a fellow INTJ, it's a real breath of fresh air to see someone with a similar personality and outlook on life. Makes me feel more comfortable in my own skin.

@BlackNerd91 This was not the reason for my comment. It was fuelled by your clear assertion that other's beliefs (in this case, yours) should be accepted purley by virtue of the belief itself. I charge this is naive & makes you (in this case, impressionable others) susceptible to manipulation. In other words, help me understand how you've arrived @ this conculsion by teaching me your rationalization. (2/2)

@tstruss912 Newton, Hawking, Nietzsche, Bill Gates & Maynard are INTJs, per wikipedia[.]org/wiki/Mastermind_(role_variant)

It's awesome to find all these similarities in other INTPs! I must say though that due to my ADD, I spent most of my teen-years daydreaming rather than thinking. Now I'm 19 though and I find myself thinking about stuff to such an extent sometimes that I would almost call it psychologically unhealthy lol but yeah, awesome video :)

@sniktawleahcim Then show me a falsifiability proof or tangible evidence for such existence. You can't? Well that's convenient. So all you have is an irrational belief & nothing more... & who needs to be eliminated fr being able to breed? Come at me, bro. I will burn the HEART out of you.

many of the different careers that are suggested for INTPs. I encompass four out of the 10 in being a professor, researcher, musician, photographer, mathematician (math minor) and psychologist. Who would've thought that all those topics shared so many qualities.

@noobler9 You must aware that most of your variables are short term/medical issues that can easily be corrected. I don't know enough about the circadian rhythm to comment. Again, I'd please provide citations fr reliable sources. Assertions without evidence are nothing more than beliefs. You need to look up the definition of propensity & get a grip on your emotional state.

I am a J because I am more comfortable with making decisions than keeping things open. I will work on something I started until it's finished. Hope that helps! :)
Report spam or abuse
@PrimalRhythm I know what you mean. I have had similar experiences. You're right the education system expects everyone to be outgoing and literally favors extroverts. Some times I feel my reserve is difficult to penetrate for others and difficult for me to get out of; it usually leaves me out of the social circle.

Cognitive functions. Upon close analysis I discovered that I am more prone to Ni rather than Ti and Te rather than Ne. Messiness and disorder annoy me and I am constantly looking for ways to improve something. I dislike starting new projects and prefer to work on old ones. My ADD caused me to believe I was P just because my thoughts jumped around so quickly and I couldn't keep a clean room. Not so anymore though. :)
Report spam or abuse
there is no way you are an INTJ. Definite INTP, I would say
Report spam or abuse
@Shadoessa Of course you think its changed you for the better, you're high! Everyone likes the way stimulants make them feel! The things is, I thought heroin had cured me of all my problems, it gave me energy, focus, happiness, even moods, just like your stimulant gives you. Unfortunately, those effects dont last long, no matter how much you take. You just burn out, and those unwanted qualities you had will still be there.

As one intp to another, I am finally getting my article on Michelangelo published! I have been re-writing it since 2007. I have discovered the sources of inspiration for Michelangelo's Adam in his Creation of Adam and for other figures.

@KINGJADEX Lol I actually made an edit in my post saying that my MBTI is actually INTJ; I wrongly typed myself as a P because I have ADD, something I was unaware of at the time I made this video. So it actually makes a whole lot of sense! Glad to be on the INTJ team! :D
Report spam or abuse
It's READILY possible to know someone's MBTI better than she knows it herself. People are horrible at typing themselves. In many cases you can tell MBTI just from one video. Also, I am getting that you have not studied MBTI all that much. Extraverted feeling means that emotions are worn on the sleeve -- smiling when something remotely funny is stated, varying voice intonation, frowning and raising eyebrows by default, etc. Fe also gets offended easily. INTJs don't do that. ADD doesn't cause that
Report spam or abuse
Then we are in fact on the same page. The crap sources online have nothing to do with anybody's real MBTi type.
Report spam or abuse
@tstruss912 As I cannot speak for all INTJs, I will speak for myself: the artistry, which you state is so lacking, comes fr being told what is/isn't possible w/in a closed system but still being able to manifest the intangible into reality. Not limited to simply proving it's existence, the process is wholly documented in cold, hard logic the simplest of minds should be able to understand. This, combined w/ the efficient execution of the objective, is how _I_ operate as an INTJ. (5/6)

Hi i think it's pretty cool that your working all this out while your young. You said about having friends that didn't really know you - that can happen when you don't know who you are and hence try to attract the wrong people who turn out to be unsuitable friends. INTPs are low on emotional intelligence, so it can take longer to figure yourself out. You seem to be working it all out. Btw your damn pretty too!

@stellarshore Did you ever stop to think that maybe he just thinks differently than you do? Introverts can come off as snooty and uptight sometimes. INTPs are the most misunderstood type on the spectrum (yes, there have been studies to prove that) because they tend to live so much inside their own heads that they never quite understand social etiquette. In an INTPs view, adding information to an argument is useful no matter what it is, but to other people, it may be considered rude or ill-placed

@tstruss912 Don't be too hard on noobler9; I called out his comments on mysticism BS about the same time you & I started. (2/2)

...especially after i discovered drama and my ability to perform and take on the persona of an outgoing, super nice person. after high school, i sort of regressed back into my default INTP setting. i think as INTPs we are naturally going to go through something similar, as we are in a perpetual state of self-discovery and analysis
Report spam or abuse
@tstruss912 The fact you aren't aware INTP/Archietct & ENTP/Inventor are sub sets of the Engineer/NT type illustrates this. INTJ/Mastermind is the Coordinator/NT, stragetically focused on the objective.* Of course, this too can be considered prone to hasty generalisation fallacies but a demarcation must be drawn. (4/6)
Report spam or abuse
I just want to say that I greatly appreciate you putting yourself out there like this and letting your voice be heard. I really appreciate the way that you expressed your experiences, however, you are objective in discussing them. That is synonymous with the objective goggles that I view the world. I'm a problem solver, objective, logical, rational young professional who is still struggling to find his place in the world. But discovering that there are others like me is very encouraging.

I ask tons of questions too! And I legitimately want the answers and people just look at me like, "What the fuck are you doing?" But it doesn't stop me from asking.

whoa, that made me think, am I an INTJ ADD female as well? I really could relate with what your saying...I also think I'm an INTP... What is your symptoms, if you are an ADHD person? I've read books about kids get wrong diagnose as ADHD when he/she is only very intelligent.

@NotTheLaw Interesting that you say that, because I have tested as an INTJ before. I recently discovered that I am only slightly more P than J (around 10% P). I think my ADHD has over-accentuated the prominence of my Perceiving function. I think I'm still an INTP, but I can relate to INTJs very easily. :)

@tstruss912 (Are you sure you're not INTJ? You're virtually radiating megalomania [rhetorical]). I provided a simple fault in the listing/citation fr INTJForum. Had you the acuity you could have dismissed it as confirmation bias (& rightfully so). Yet & as reinforce by your previous msgs, you cling to what can best be described as secundum quid, at worst hasty generalisation fallacies. It takes but one Black Swan event to render your assertions superfluous. (2/6)

You misunderstand. It's an attempt to understand one's preference, their preferred way of thinking. It's like trying new cheeses to learn which cheese you like more. When you finally figure your preference of cheese, it doesn't limit you to only that type of cheese.

...like marriage, religion, family and gender from a very early age. People were quick to label me aloof, strange, immature, weird... and I must say I'd always give opinions that would drive people crazy, even mad. Truth is I always liked the way I am and would never want to change, even if just to fit in and make my life easier. I'm by no means a sociopath or antisocial. I can be pretty sociable and be lots of fun if I feel like it, I have close friends and I love my parents and sisters....

INTP women are soooo weird! being an INTP myself i discovered that most women are "E"s and "F". being with a 'feeler' women gives me a warm feeling. and of course as i am a good listener i like being with an extrovert. (no offence btw)

@stellarshore Haha no apology necessary. Like I said, INTPs can come off as a bit abrasive sometimes. I didn't intend to sound offended, and I wasn't. :) Of course we can be friends! Lol actually one of my best friends is an INFP, just a fun little fact. B)

I am an INTP as well. Run by my videos...I have evolved exponentially over the years. I have drowned in elements of theoretical exploration and unique approaches to perception that made me an absolute outcast in my life. I have been heavily exploring the INTP type lately, as I am trying so hard to find a job that fits! I have been a touring musician, architecture major, sports medicine major, helicopter pilot and fixed wing pilot. Still, I'm lost. So, good luck and I'd love to share stories!

@tstruss912 Are you now asserting the casualness of this forum negates the application of logic? I'll stop being coy: do you want a full response to your previous comments or not? Your answer should consider the first question within this comment.

It's no more "cramming" than telling people what your eye color is. Of course there are variations but no matter what shade of blue your eyes are you still tell other people that your eyes are blue. Trying to decide what personality type you are is the same thing. You're just trying to find out what you are. It does NOT definite what you are.

@tstruss912 Solely on this analogy: ENTJ/Fieldmarshal.

Oh, and if your response was going to be "your medicine changes you!" please note that the rambling is the ONLY INTP trait that I possess and would not indicate I am an INTP anyway. Trust me, I have conducted thorough research on the matter for over three years and have studied the system with professors at my university. I am not a charlatan with the MBTI. I am a Ne dominant with a Ti secondary, and if you knew me at all, my Fi would be obvious also. Rambling, really, means nothing. Trust me.
Report spam or abuse
I am indeed an INTJ. I cannot express exactly how presumptuous it is for you to assume otherwise. Do you subscribe to the asinine belief that there is no such thing as an intelligent attractive woman? Simply comparing my video with other INTJs should be proof enough that you are wrong.
Report spam or abuse
I read the description. It doesn't work like that. You plainly exhibit extraverted feeling, in all of your facial expressions. You plainly speak in a rambly way, via introverted thinking and extraverted intuition. INTJs do NOT speak, ramble, smile, flinch, intonate like you do. Whatever you've been diagnosed with would not change you that way. And for the sake of argument, even if ADD did change your whole personality into an INTP, that would still BE your personality. The cause does not matter.
Report spam or abuse
Yea right. All INTPs do is point out grammatical errors

@ighandlow Haha actually I have a thread over at personalitycafe right now that is discussing whether or not I'm an INTP or an INTJ. I have quite a lot in common with both. The consensus is that either I am an INTP with a very developed J function, or an INTJ with a very developed P function. I've researched the subject very thoroughly and I'm still undecided. What is intelligence? Are you going to let someone dictate that for you? Let's say that a Sensor has dedicated their time to memorizing practical things like hiking trails while an intuitive has memorized the theories of hiking. If placed in the actual situation, who do you think would be more "intelligent?" The Sensor, obviously, because the Sensor knows how the apply what he/she knows practically while the intuitive does not. It all depends on what you define as "intelligence."

I'm an ISTP which apparently make up only about 5% of the population. However, I am a female and it is a predominately male personality type apparently. So ISTP females only make up about 2% of american women. Not as rare as your type, INTJ, but still rare. The funny thing is that I have met more INTP's than any other personality type. I have only ever met one ISTP ever and it was a guy. I was like, "Holy crap! He's just like me!!!" Haha.

INTP guy here. Thanks for making this video and I understand to some extent what you are going through. It must be harder being a girl. When I watch your video, I can see you thinking and processing when u make small pauses or look around the room. @NightinGal89 yea isn't it interesting how all these personality "sorters" correlate? I mean many (maybe even most) INTPS are sagittarians (I'm an 18 year old INTP female, sagittarius sun, aries moon, capricorn ascendant)...The myers briggs might be interesting and insightful but it's 16 typologies don't compare with the thousands of permutations possible in astrology.....still these tests have more functional uses

Dear Shadoessa, What do you think of my theory that was recently published? If you go to google image and type: "Augustus, cameo, capricorn", you will see an oval cameo of a nude muscle-man (Augustus Caesar whose favorite sign was Capricorn). I think Michelangelo used this figure as the basic model for his Adam in his "Creation of Adam". He elevated the diagonal arm and closed the gap between the legs. He invented the right arm. I value your comments. Thank you.

another thing about INTP is that we have to accept that we are gonna be "the differnt" person in our group of friends and even the brain of the group... you just have to accept who u are and figure out what makes u happy..

@noobler9 An interesting idea, but to what accuracy do these other methods have if we assume the MBTI to be our baseline? I'm an INTP female too and it's been pure torture in a lot of ways (as far as being misunderstood). Also, what you said about other women crying on your shoulder about some relationship and not caring is exactly what I experience with women (which is why I don't have them as friends - they're emotionally draining and I just don't get them even though I am one). Thank you for sharing this!

@hotshot1237 It's good to know that my video has helped someone. It's also good to know that there are other people in the world who get bored with "trivialities" as I sometimes call them haha. Though I'd like to point out that there's actually no difference in the numbers of introverted men and women, I'm glad that my video has helped some people realize that there are rare personalities among both men and women, and those rare personalities need to be realized! Loneliness is good for no one :)

As an intp I am tempted to point out other's grammatical errors. Once I really overdid it with a very pretty model who saw nothing wrong with: "Doe's it look like I'm joking?" When she finally lost her temper, I stopped, apologized, and later gave her a gift even though she still speaks and writes English poorly.

@BlackNerd91 Yes, I've seen similar sources. As in my particular case, I'm an INTJ only by 1% point over INTP. I'm sure we can both agree there's overlap in certain cases. I however, know I'm an INTJ that admires INTPs. Those that I've personally met have been nothing but astounding. (1/2)
