Bury the Axis (1943)

by F. Pug • 48,803 views

An old stop-mation World War II propaganda cartoon. This has to be my favorite propaganda ever created. Might be offensive to some. Directed by Lou Bunin.

U.S and USSR, valuable allies, until the five seconds after the war.

@Toyman1982 Well yeah, he did some good things, but don't forget the man was a major factor in the bad stuff that would happen. Sometimes even the bad of a person outweighs the good points.

@zenjiro2 Hirohito's lyrics are: "The son of the sun am I. When born I was dropped from the sky!! When I open my yap every quiet young JAPanese bows to my family tie. Excuse please the bombing we've done! In the name of the rising sun! When we bomb you on sunday, we're sorry on Monday, we only bomb people for fun!

I think we have to keep i mind that America, as with most of the world, was at war. Wars are also fought in factories and shipyards; and, as we're seeing that the war was fought on the movie screen.. So, my contention is to look at this in a historical sense.. Yes, it's propaganda, but, it's war.. And, we won.. So, thanks, Friend Bungalox..

Ah, yes, all that talk of Hitler and the Axis trying to take over the world was silly and should have been ignored. If not for those "shit kicking farmboys and inner city degenerates," you wouldn't be able to sit at a computer and type this drivel.

" Did you forget all the fighting in Germany, France, Italy and elsewhere in Europe?" No, but the fighting that occurred in those regions were absolutely miniscule compared to the Eastern Front. Just look at the scale of the battles in those regions versus in Russia, and look at the weapons and number of troops deployed there. Compare the battles; the Western and Southern fronts had no equivalents to Stalingrad, Kursk, Leningrad, etc.

Thank You For posting; Interesting how Japan didn't have their 'rising sun' symbol made illegal, and Japanese war-criminals weren't hunted to death by a kangaroo court. Cheers! Valkyrie Ziege Mourne

@DanyNicola you also Surrendered enough to fill an entire city. one British soldier was bringing back thousands of prisoners. not to mention that you all ran, regardless of rank, and left the fighting to the Germans.

Even back then there was the obsession with the Nazis. Anyone find it odd that Mussolini and the Japanese guy both had on swastika armbands? The Japanese conquered a larger area than anyone and Mussolini had been in power a long, long time before the Nazis ever came to power yet, Japan and Italy are always shown as Hitler's deputies. I'm sure Adolf's proud at least.

@zipper179 : I am a "Boomer", and a lifelong student of History. And indeed, my Dad, and all my friend's Dad's were WW2 vets. I was raised to believe that the Japs and Krauts, were evil. Not so much the people themselves, but what they fought for. But I don't remember the old cartoons, with the wartime stereotypes, filling my little heart with hate. I just thought they were funny. I guess they failed, as propaganda. But then again, humor has always been a powerful weapon in the Western arsenal.

The USA is, has always been and always will be full of redneck racists willing to defend their warped morals and view of history. This is straight up war propaganda intended to convince a bunch of shit kicking farmboys and inner city degenerates to die "heroically" for their homeland.

@Soundwave3591 Ah, Wilderness..! You said it! Like many of my generation born during the war/post war years, I grew up with television, and by the mid-50's, so many of those cartoons were seen by us. Warner Bros. made several burlesked the enemy.. Frank Capra once said the Axis leaders were so easy to laugh at.. Hitler, with his Chaplin mustache; Mussolini, his jutting chin; Fatso Goering; Hirohito & Tojo, with those buck teeth and big, sill beam glasses..! We loved it..!.!

@zipper179 : There was certainly more of a racial element in the Pacific war. On both sides. Remember the Japanese were told they were the Master Race, "liberating" Asia from the clutches of the subhuman Western hordes, and bringing civilization to their "little bothers". Japan had always seemed mysterious to Americans, and after Pearl Harbor, done during Peace Talks, an element of evil sneakiness was added, with some justification. Plus an angry feeling of, "What did we ever do to them?"

That's because no one really knew what Hitler did until after the war. Certain people knew within the Axis but no one said anything because Hitler brought Germany back to its former glory so no one wanted to acknowledge the genocide. Only a few acted against the holocaust but it was all underground and the Allies didn't know the full extent of the "Final Solution" until they liberated the camps otherwise I'm sure they would have incorporated the death camps in to the wartime propoganda.

Report spam or abuse
@Soundwave3591 That is true. Mussolini thought he was at the head of a great army. Few tincanlike-tanks were available, no motorised transport. Rifles and machineguns terribly prone to jamming. Total absence of any portable anti-tank weapon, thus making hand grenades, machineguns and mortars the last resort against armour. Hand grenades rarely detonated or detonated off time. No wonder the only solution was calling for help or reatreating. Or die (pretty uselessy and gruesomely).

"What you just said is that the US getting involved kept the Axis from getting buried, when you said in the sentence before that they were overextended and undersupplied." I think you misread. I said by the time the US became directly involved, the Axis was horribly overextended and undersupplied (the situation in Russia was bad enough for Germany that it was forced into mobilizing its entire economy for war). I'm not saying the US contributed nothing, but we weren't a deciding factor.
Report spam or abuse
To be fair, America's role in WWII is really exaggerated. Most of the fighting occurred in Russia and China, and by the time the US stepped up to the Axis, they were already horribly overextended and undersupplied, or were strategically in a position where a counterattack against the US would be impossible. So, I think if it weren't for those "shit kicking farmboys and inner city degenerates", the Axis would still be buried, albeit under a USSR that would rule all of Eurasia and the Pacific.

RIGHT ! Stalin and Communism were the real monsters! Stalin started WWII and gained the most at the end. and communism in Russia is very, very alive and in control. Meanwhile lets still worry about those nazis and fascists that lost the war and only lasted 12 or so years!

Truly bizarre. I showed it to one of my classes to interest them in studying WWII. aAso can be used to open a discussion of racial stereotyping, maybe combined with viewing the documentary "Time of Fear" about Japanese American internment camps.

@DanyNicola I don't think you understand. For one, this is a propaganda cartoon. Two, Im sure the soldiers were brave, but they were fighting with really ineffective and obsolete equipment when compared to Germans and other nations, and Three Its the leader being portrayed, not soldiers.

I dislike ALL KINDS of Propaganda, so in my opinion this really does suck. Fuck this shit, it makes people belief stuff the government demands of them, it distorts facts and confuses citizens with false claptrap. Just only like this fucking 'Casablanca' crap it's traversed with propaganda-contents, so you do not even recognize that you change your opinion from a neutral attitude to a strict patriotic one. Do not connect this specificly this cartoon, but rather with all ones. Otherwise: Fuck you!

@zipper179 : Depends on how strict your definition of propaganda is. Is "Casablanca"? Or Errol Flynn tearing across Europe, with the Nazis in hot pursuit? Or were they just topical drama/adventure? And yes, I think I saw every old movie, on the 4:30 Movie, The Late Show, and The Late Late Show, as well as, Creature Features and Chiller Theater. It's a shame that so many great films will be forgotten, again. Ironically, try explaining to kids today, that TV used to go off the air, at 1:00am.

@Yankiification "prop⋅a⋅gan⋅da information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc." Both sides in WWII are guilty of using propaganda to persuade the public. Whether or not propaganda is a bad thing is up to the person or how the material is used. So you better wise up before calling me, or anyone else anti-American for using the word propaganda in the CORRECT sense.

It wasn't spelling that was wrong(you spelled it correct), it was your definition of the word propaganda. I gave you the definition straight from the fucking dictionary and This video fits the definition and description of propaganda. This video was made to sway the American public more against the Axis. Mussolini in the Dog House, Hitler being a stinky baby, making fun of Hitler for losing in Russia, telling everyone the Allies would kick the Axis's ass for being evil is definitely propaganda.

We had stop-animation back in 1943? This might sound stupid, but I though that wasn't for another 20 years!
Report spam or abuse
@skeilak I hope you get this, because you really nailed it.. The director, Frank Capra once said that WWII seemed to come out of central casting.. Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo, were the perfect villains.. I think our gut hatred went more toward Japan, for obvious reasons. Pearl Harbor, and, an easily indentifiable enemy; even to the point that there was a gang war term for what they had done. To sneak up on someone and sly rap, or, sucker punch him, was to 'Jap' him..
Report spam or abuse
@StanleyMcBigchin ...guys!!! Hirohito was born 1901 - Japan joined the AXIS in 1940... as head of state Hirohito was technically responsible for Japan's final decision to start hostilities at the Imperial Conference on 1 December 1941, six days before the attack on Pearl Harbor which began the Pacific war. so he was 40 !!! The government ruled Japan, the Emperors' position was mostly symbolic but his approval was definitive.

I don't know what your sources are, but you are wrong about the fighting. Did you forget all the fighting in Germany, France, Italy and elsewhere in Europe? Germany tried invading Russia a failed. There was also fighting in the South Pacific Islands, especially in the Philippines and Java. What you just said is that the US getting involved kept the Axis from getting buried, when you said in the sentence before that they were overextended and undersupplied. The Axis was buried under the USSR.
