"Smash" Star Megan Hilty Channels Marilyn Monroe with "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"

by Broadwaycom • 171,363 views

As Smash's Ivy Lynn, Megan Hilty has spent months vying for the coveted role of Marilyn Monroe in the fictional musical Bombshell, and while we may not know how it plays out for Ms. Lynn, in the...

She's a better singer than Marilyn! Megan can belt out and give it her all!

People were trained to sing differently in the 50s Marilyn was a magnificent singer

Who wrote the downbar? How idiotic to say that "Megan eclipses Monroe". Megan is awesome and does a wonderful job putting her own stamp on the part. Monroe is Monroe, and will always be. She is so deeply symbolic of the idea of femininity for the western world that she is beyond comparison or questioning. And that's that. Megan would be the first to agree.

it should be megan hilty Vs carol channing cause this version of the song is longer than the film

Marilyn Monroe's version will always be the best!

You're kidding, right?  The only one who comes even close to surpassing Marilyn is Nicole Kidman, in Moulin Rouge.

i actually like Channing better than hilty and monroe on this role.... Ducks rocks being thrown at my head....

Bad title.  She brought her own to Lorelei Lee.

I was just watching the AMA performance of "Wrecking Ball", on a coworker's recommendation. I had to come here to watch someone with actual talent.
Report spam or abuse
Great choice! Megan is full of talent!!!!
Report spam or abuse
description says "...actually eclipses the icon Monroe version" umm NOPE!
Report spam or abuse
Omg, she's so perfect. she's just as sexy as marilyn but WAY better at singing
Report spam or abuse
Stahp Megan, your Marilyn is showing. Stunning.
Report spam or abuse
This is crap, she is overdoing the song, and screeching it not singing it.

Sorry theatre god, but your opinion is bullshit, Megan is perfect, you have to get out of your bubble

Are u seriously comparing a 50's sex symbol with a 2013 broadway actress?
Report spam or abuse
no, I totally felt that way at first, but the thing is, she just has such a stage presence that draws you into her performance, that even though her voice is sometimes wierd, she just captivates you. She has a really strong acting ability, which is truly why I think most people prefer her over Mcphee.

Dear God I need to go se this before it's over!! Love Megan Hilty… SO much… hm well my birthday's comin' up… sadly after this ends. Early gift? Hm… *makes plans*
Report spam or abuse
She can always gain weight you know... I mean actors do that all the time, they gain fat, muscles and lose them just for some roles

Meagan has a great voice and probably has a greater resemblance to Marilyn than Katharine, but I am still trying to see Marilyn's sex appeal in her and she does not quite have it. The difference between a musical and television is that when one does the close ups Katharine wins the sex appeal round and for me that is the make and break factor. Meagan would probably be the better Marilyn on stage because there is no close ups and the sex appeal is not so important. Yes, she is fantastic.

Waa she is so good its just the music arangents need to be more jazzy more of a dirty raspy sound I really wish they would change that
Report spam or abuse
I would love to see her in "Bombshell." Mcphee is far to thin to play Marilyn Monroe..

This isn't Megan as Marylin. It's Megan as Lorelai Lee... Marylin should be completely taken out of the question .
Report spam or abuse
Katharine Mcphee was runner up on American Idol...LIVE PERFORMANCES. Not studio.
Report spam or abuse
She was great no deny of it... But she did not Channel Marilyn
Report spam or abuse
This was a comical film, especially this number. Her "sex appeal" isn't that important when it comes to this.
Report spam or abuse
Regardless of who performed this before Megan, she is fantastic. A true example of theatrical talent, and how it is often underrated. I love the color and range of her voice. Sweet but strong and so effortless. As far as Hilty and McPhee, I'll keep my comment brief. This video is about Hilty's BROADWAY CAREER and NOT SMASH. Their voices are very different. Which underlines the quintessential difference between theatre and mainstream singers. They shouldn't and can't be compared.

Megan Hilty continues to impress me everytime I see her.. I saw her on Broadway..I'm wathing her on Smash..and now this..She is Today's Star..Talented, Beautiful...and during all interviews she continues to be funny and humble.. She is just a treasure who wasn't just an over night success..She has also paid her dues.. in sweat, blood and tears with her training all through her life.. Good for You Megan... Couldn't happen to a harder working person...Trudy

She's not playing Marilyn, here, she's playing Lorelei Lee. And doing a damn good job of it, as well.
Report spam or abuse
R u kidding Marilyn Monroes voice was nothing compared to her she was just hot Megan hilty is hot and super crazy talented
Report spam or abuse
The know, but tell me, except of an obsessed fan of broadway, who knows Carol as Lorelei? and either way, I still preffer Marilyn
Report spam or abuse
I WANT IVY TO PLAY MARILYN!!!! TEAM IVY!! and of course TEAM MEGAN FOREVER!!!!

Report spam or abuse
I love her voice, and her dress! lol
Report spam or abuse
I'd say she's playing a role and doing it damn well, the same as Hilty always does. She, herself, said that she drew inspiration from Channing's original as well as Monroe's film - as she felt they each brought something very different to the role. Megan rocks this, comparisons to past portrayals aside.
Report spam or abuse
I think McPhee is a better Marilyn --much softer and better with the songs. Hility is tooooo loud! BUT she looks more like her because of her build.
Report spam or abuse
Cute, but lacks the teasing element Marilyn had.
Report spam or abuse
Amazing. I'm very happy to see they went with a style similar Carol's dress as opposed to Marilyn's. Carol and Marilyn are my top two actresses, and Megan fillinf in both their shoes and still being original and marvelous has for sure put her in the top five, just behind Jean Harlow and Julie Andrews. Please watch this everyone: Carol Channing sings on 1953 TV (Two songs from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes") It shows how Megan was original without tarnishing it, and also how great Carol is. :P

if you're basing your opinion of who would perform better in a role between two actresses on their physical appearance then your opinion is invalid you DO realize your comment is on the same hate-level as saying someone is "far too heavy" for a a role, right?
Report spam or abuse
But when you're on Broadway, you need that. She's not always going to sound like Marilyn, because it would be impossible to portray that out to an audience. You HAVE to be loud. McPhee didn't even sound anything like Marilyn. Megan does one hell of an imitation, but she brings the power that's necessary for Broadway as well.

She is so good at live (broadway) stuff. She totally needs to go back to that. (Not that I don't think she's AMAZING on smash. Her amazing stage presence just isn't coming across on film)
Report spam or abuse
I enjoy all 3 great ladies as Lorelei, and I agree with what you said here. I'd also like to add that any great actor knows the responsibility is to the text/music. No matter who originated a role or how iconic they were, an actor is bringing a character to life not impersonating another actor.

I Love you Megan! Friend of Travis Lewis!!

We got tiks to this MONTHS ago before there was a cast. We just love the movie and wanted to see the difference between the movie and the musical. WHAT A TREAT!! Megan Hilty was superbly hilarious. I had a smile on my face the entire time. This is one encores! production I wish they would bring to mainstream broadway and keep Hilty as the lead. If only so I can see it as many times I want.

To the people saying "best marilyn ever" she's just playing a character that Marilyn Monroe just happens to have played before, but Carol Channing played the character first. All amazing actresses/icons!

BTW, in case anyone doesn't know, Judy's other famous song, "The Man That Got Away," is from the film "A Star Is Born."

Report spam or abuse
Wouldn't she be great on Broadway in a revival of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes?"
Report spam or abuse
But this version's much truer to the original show (tho' Ms. Hilty's vocals are "prettier" than Carol Channing's also rousing, character-filled ones), a semi-staged concert version of which Megan's performing in here. She's marvelous! I also love Marilyn M.'s distinctive rendition; hers was a fairly limited, but sweet & charming singing voice & style. But the role of Lorelei Lee wasn't written for her--she had barely been seen on screens when the musical was written.
Report spam or abuse
All good about her , but it's still what is written in the title ...
Report spam or abuse
way too country sounding.. im not liking it
Report spam or abuse
Em Em ! the title says she does and she doesn't so people have the right to say it even if her performance is stunning ( wich is the case )
Report spam or abuse
Nope. Marilyn doesn't even come close to owning this song. That award goes to the woman who this song was written for, and who originated the role on Broadway -- Carol Channing.
Report spam or abuse
What about talent? This is show businesses. Imagine if Beyonce was playing Effie instead of J-Hud... GIVE ME A BREAK
Report spam or abuse
While this does not prove she would be a great Marlyn is does prove she's a great actress as she is playing Lorelia instead of copying Marlyn's version.

You do realize that there will be no musical called Bombshell? That's it's just a fictional musical for the plot of Smash

i couldn't agree with you more ,she would have done better channeling Ethel Merman !

Marilyn owns that award, she ripped it from Carol hands at the first second of the movie

Horrid? Hilty got rave reviews. You're delusional, just like most McPhee tone deaf stans.

she looks like Marilyn far more than Karen does as Marilyn! I like Megan Hilty, but the character Ivy is a bee-atch!

wow you completely missed the point didn't you do yourself a favor and never call anyone hunny

I think she has a good voice and in the right role, with the freedom for artistic interpretation, I appreciate her performances. But she's not a good mimic. And yes, she's not playing Marilyn here per se but she's still hampered by the same imitation that limits her on Smash.
Report spam or abuse
she sings it well but Marilyn own´s this song
Report spam or abuse
There is utterly no Marilyn here. This girl is a broadway broad belting out this number. Marilyn's jazzy and witty rendition of the song is a million miles away from this.
Report spam or abuse
i may not be a fan of ivy lynn, but i am a complete fan of megan hilty :)
Report spam or abuse
If Ivy wants to be a star and star as a famous Hollywood icon, maybe next season in Smash they should do a production on Judy Garland's life, and Ivy could be cast as Judy. Yes, I know Karen sounded lovely singing "Over the Rainbow" in the first episode of Season 1, but I don't think she'd sound great trying to belt out notes in a song like "The Man That Got Away" as Ivy definitely would. Of course, it's just my opinion.
Report spam or abuse
She's okay but she's not feminine like Marilyn and she's not playing up to the sex symbol Marilyn was I don't know it's not great.
Report spam or abuse
I agree! I also had to remind myself that this is kind of Katharine's TV show anyway, so maybe we are suposed to expect her character to be more likeable.

Borzalmas rosz . Semmi erotika a hangjában, a mozdulataiban . Köszönöm !!

if i want Marilyn i'll watch a movie, no one to my mind has ever got it right! there will only ever be one!

Megan Just amazing. She made Marilyn proud
Report spam or abuse
Please remember that she is NOT playing Marilyn Monroe but Lorelei. Carole Channing played the role on Broadway. Marilyn played it in the movie. I think Megan's rendition more closely resembles Carole's. BTW, I love each of them. As far as "Smash" is concerned, I really wanted Karen for the role....because I am so sentimental :>)
Report spam or abuse
Megan really is a broadway singer. Mcphee doesnt hv the power , but she's a good studio artist. Performing live day after day is grueling. Here's to those who entertain us!!

I think she does really well :) She sings it beautifully!

Well she's not meant to be playing Marilyn Monroe here anyway....

A lot like her ........... Also she's a lot like glinda

Ivy is Marilyn! Karen is too bad to play Marilyn Monroe!

Despite the title of the video, Megan's not playing Marilyn, she's playing Lorelei Lee. Check out vids of Carol Channing playing this character.

Noooo Karen is a boring character, She's just awesome as Ivy, She is saving the show
Report spam or abuse
The end of the video was great singing!

No, its about two girls who go on a cruise who want to marry a man for their money, not because they love them, but learn throughout the hilarious story about true love and yackidy yack, but megan was PHENOMENAL.
Report spam or abuse
I think she's absolutely great, especially the last bit she sang! She is way sexier than Katherin Mcphee, and I just think she does the soft spoken speaking bits wayyyy better.
Report spam or abuse
maybe I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure altering your physical appearance isn't "the whole point" of being an actress/actor MAYBE maybe I'm CRAZYYY but i think talent factors in somewhere too but what the fuck do i know
Report spam or abuse
I would have hope from a Broadway channel to realize that she is doing an amazing job but she doesn't sound like Marilyn . Leave Smash out of this just to get more views and be honest with what you are showing . This is the same song but that's it !
Report spam or abuse
I saw Megan perform this in Austin tonight...she was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Report spam or abuse
She did a great job! People keep saying that she wasn't channeling Marilyn, but who says she has to? She's not playing Marilyn Monroe, she's playing Lorelei Lee.
