war is so dumb, nothing but death comes out of it. Wake up from "fight for your country" brainwashed sheep spell and tell the politicians to fight their own wars. Next time politicians want to start wars, next time say, okay you fight them then, cause those soldiers on the other side are just like ME.

+MainstreamPoPsucks3 Initially, the idea was to deport the Jewish across Europe and then out of Europe once the occupation was complete. However, due to certain... influences, Hitler wasn't the main reason for their... plight. Himmler thought it was a better and more efficient idea to just send them to concentration camps, what happened after was not Hitler's idea, but rather approval without knowing it's consequences. Leaders make stupid decisions thinking it's for the best, but it doesn't deign them evil. If that were the case, every leader who ordered men and women to their deaths would be classed as murderers, including George W. Bush.
Report spam or abuse
+Blas Molinari Actually the reason why they chose to gas the jews in the camps instead of just massacring them by shooting them was because Himmler once participated in an execution and he was disgusted by all the blood, so he ordered that a more "humane method" should be put into work, not that gassing is specialy humane but... Althought there does not seem to be any proofs Hitler ordered the final solution, I am pretty sure he did not go against it, he probably had nothing against it. I think in both Hitler and Stalins cases the men around them might have been even worse than them.

Why couldn't they just bomb the beach before the soldiers landed?
Report spam or abuse
You guys should really read some books on this stuff...Sorry to cut the story short but some landings went easy and some didn't.  Omaha was a hard one. If you are interested in this stuff go to your university library and/or look it up on the net for books that are filled with FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS of this particular landing.
Report spam or abuse
they did but this was a surprise attack they didnt want to give away the landing location, hitler was expecting them to land at a different beach on a different date. hence D-days success

the one picking up his hand made me lol though .If I saw that while looking around like tha captain I'd belike "omg everyone iz dying , wait ..wtf"

One thing has always bothered me about the beach assault. It is probably the most authentic, no punches pulled war scenes ever filmed but I noticed some of the rifles were wrapped in what looks like "see through" plastic sheeting. That was not yet invented unless it is meant to be some kind of cellophane. Can anyone throw some light on this? I have a feeling it's another minor Hollywood blunder that can ruin an otherwise very accurate portrayal of real war.
Report spam or abuse
+Ryan Pietal You are missing the point. These are large plastic sheets covering the rifle. Condoms were used but only to cover the barrel so as to prevent salt water getting in. The answer to my original question was given by "SUDDENWALL" a week ago. The material was "ploifilm", an early type of transparent plastic.

+suddenwall Thank you for solving the simple question I originally asked. It's amazing how people go round in circles.

Just remember kids that this brutal, compelling, and gut wrenching portrayal of the bloodiest conflict in the history of humankind lost the Best Picture Oscar to "Shakespeare in Love".
Report spam or abuse
The only thing kids have to remember is that The Oscars are a joke and not an indication of how really good or bad a motion picture is. As far as real accolades go, Saving Private Ryan won far more than a forgettable movie like "Shakespeare in Love" could have ever dreamed of.

I had slow-mo feelings when I was under heavy pressure, needing to give orders at the same time of having firing in paint ball I really wanted to win so I did everything I could to help the team. Just a small silly weekend game and also my feeling was just that, pressure. We won, but it got me thinking, everybody was laughing and joking at me later when I explained. I think that is what Steven tried to show in the slow-mo, not just for the horror sake but to show the ultimate moment of being town into insane situations and your brain can't focus on any rationality. It's ultra sad to think that people actually LIVED that......

The description is a total bastardization of what this scene is depicting. He's not "pausing" to "survey" anything. His entire body and senses have been momentarily shocked and paralyzed by the initial impact of all the gunfire and explosions going off around him, particularly that huge last one, leaving him in a brief daze, but he toughs it out anyway, waits for it to pass and immediately continues his fight.

Stalin didn't give a crap how many Russians he had to sacrifice to save his worthless ass. Unlike civilized countries, who took into account how many casualties they would have to suffer to accomplish a goal. Russian soldiers were dead no matter what. If they pulled back they were murdered by their own officers. If they moved forward, they were killed by the Germans. One thing in Germany's favor, at least they tried to assassinate Hitler on several occasions whereas the Russians didn't have the backbone to rid themselves of their mass murdering leader Josef Stalin - who was just as evil as Hitler.

Winston Churchill gave up the British Empire in order to help Comrade Stalin save his Communist Empire.  50 million White people were killed in this war, and now every single White Western country will be majority non-White in about 25 years.  London is still part of an empire though ... the Isamic Empire.   What fools FDR and Churchill were.

No. Most likely you would die. Very negative, but very realistic. I would most likely die. It's depressing, but this puts things in perspective for you. To understand, somewhat, of what these soldiers went through.

yeah i agree xWiredTx

I realize this film is meant to be taken seriously but at 0:27 I just sort of laugh inside. I mean, if you got your arm blown off why wouldn't you be passed out from shock? And the way he picks the arm back up like no problem looks like a cartoon. It ruins the drama and tension of this scene in my opinion.

+Charles Findlay It's... probably not within my rights to ask, but... do you know if the poor bloke made it through?

Does anyone know what its called at the beginning of this clip when Tom Hanks' character hears everything in a really echoey way?
Report spam or abuse
It is a concussion from the impact of an explosion at close range.
Report spam or abuse
+DC5Pro  shell shock is actually the term used during the first world war for soldiers that experienced what we now call,(chronic) PTSD. It isn't actually the same thing as the blast effect suffered temporarily by Hanks in this scene.
Report spam or abuse
I saw a documentary about WW2 and the fucked up part about it was that prior to all our soldiers storming the beach that day...there was supposed to have been bombers annialate those Germans, but dew to clouds our pilots couldnt see well enough and they aborted the mission...and you know what the result of that was....

why did you have to ruin the sentiment with a fictional character?
Report spam or abuse
You realize most of the soldiers who fought in WW1 would be nearing 40 by the time the USA entered WW2? They didn't exactly have to worry about being drafted again.
Report spam or abuse
They stormed the beaches, so the germans would have to fight on another front. Think about it some, a helluva a lot more people would have been killed if they continued the war on just one front. That means that the germans would have been more fortified with artillery, machine gun encampments, bunkers, trenches. etc.

In any case, the Eastern Front is not comparable to the Western Front. No doubt everyone involved in the war is a hero, even on the German side (they thought they fought for good as well), but lets be frank here: the Eastern Front was where almost all of the war in Europe took place. The casualties and deaths and number of equipment that rolled out there is mind blowing and literally shadows many, many, many times over what happened in the Western Front, that's a fact.

The two best movies about Iwo Jima would be Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, there's also Sands of Iwo Jima with John Wayne, although the movie is really not about Iwo Jima, only the end shows the landing at Iwo Jima and the flag raising, although they had the actual flag raisers play their parts in the film. The HBO series, The Pacific, also has a good Iwo Jima scene.
