Billy Joel's "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant"

by Robert Moutal • 73,338 views

This music video was produced with zero budget in 1990 by students of the Universidad Anahuac and Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. It's a tribute to Billy Joel's great song.

For a zero budget, that was pretty phenomenal.

I was wary at first; the thought of a fan made music video for my favorite Billy Joel song (and we all know how most fan made videos turn out). But this... my God! You did that song justice and then some! Very professionally collaborated, edited, acted, everythinged. Expectation shattering, in short. I hope you're doing things like this these days. Do you, in fact, have a good job? And a good office, for that matter? New wife, new life, the family fine?

Tu video le hace mucha justicia a la cancion, mi favorita de Billy, tiene diferentes ritmos, toda clase de instrumentos y una muy buena historia que se ajusta a los cmabios de ritmo. Muy bien hecho muchas felicidades

You did this video very well!! You captured every aspect of the song!I am 45 and I have always loved this ballad about Brenda and Eddie. I can't imagine how anyone could have done a better video about this song.

I saw your link on Songfacts, and like you, this is my favorite Billy Joel song. "The Stranger" came out in 1977 when I was a sophomore in High School, and it was an important part of my teenaged years. I always wondered why there wasn't a video... and you have done the song justice (in a very 1990s way.) Thank you and your compatriots for the work & effort you put into it; it's very well done, and y'all look like you had a BLAST making it.

Thank you very much. Indeed, we had a blast making it.

Great video for a great song! You guys did a fantastic job especially with no budget! Just wanted to add that a lot of people forget that most music videos that you'd see on MTV or whatever, going back to the early 80s cost 6 figures easily. We're talking budgets of around a quarter million dollars! What you guys did with no budget was as good or better than a lot of the early music videos.

Blast from the past.  Thanks Mr. Big!

I always think of this video during the happiest time of my older years. My son and I went out to a local Italian place and I asked him if remembered hanging out at the Village Green.  We'd just crack up and shoot the breeze about the old days.  I was easily one of the guys in my early 20s, just having fun as true adulthood approached.  "Who knew we could ever want more out of life".  Fantastic job, man and thanks!!!!!

PLEASE take this as a compliment, because it is. I don't think Billy Joel would have seen Hicksville exactly like this - but that is what I LOVE about it. It makes the song more universal, and the choreography, the female sax player, the "Grease" inspired bits - I LOVE all of that. So much enthusiasm from the cast - THAT'S directing. Big congrats  I shared this on FB and in my blog.  http://inmyoblivion.blogspot.com/2014/05/all-in-familythe-making-of-town-diary_27.html

Thank you very much for your kind comment. Indeed, Billy captured the essence of that relationship perfectly.

Rich, Thanks for a wonderful trip to the past. Brings back lot's of memories of our dating youth. Has sort of a New York City look to it. Great music and dancing

Absolutely great video, as I always imagined it would be just like this.  One question that I don't know if anyone noticed.  When they got engaged, why was her engagement ring on her right hand versus her left where it belongs?  Anyone else notice that?  But loved, loved, loved the video.  I wonder if Billy Joel ever saw it or the question is, why didn't he make his own video to this song?  I'm sure it couldn't have been done better than this one!
Report spam or abuse
Wow, you're absolutely right! Kudos for noticing. You know, when we produced this video we were barely 21 years old and none of us had any idea where an engagement ring went... LOL I wonder if Billy Joel ever saw this every single day and I know that, somehow, one of these days this video will make its way to him. Thank you for your kind comments! :-)

I am a big fan of Billy Joel myself.  I'd say it looks good.  Kinda makes you wonder too how the music video would have been if he would have made one.

I've wondered about that myself for many years... LOL Thank you for your comment!

Very Well Done. What memories this has brought back. My wife of 30 years and I both love this song. I was listening to itunes this morning and had a thought to look at you tube for the video. I found this and will definitely be sharing with her. Thanks for the effort your team put forth in the making of this vid.   Que tengas buen dia y muchas gracias !!! Lo disfruto mucho, el video.

@TalkALotMore Thank you very much for your kind comments! I didn't know about the Beatles influence on this song although I'm not surprised, seeing that Billy Joel is such a Beatles fan.

Thank you very much for your comment. Actually Universidad Anahuac is not a film school but we produced it within the Communications course. I'm glad you liked it and I appreciate your sharing it with others ;-)

I dunno... I suspect that if the Mrs. saw her husband walking arm in arm with an attractive female friend she might have something to say about it... Doesnt make them lovers, but it is certainly more indicative of a closer friendship than not having seen the person in years. Im just saying ;)

Thank you very much for your comment. I'd love to know what lyrical interpretation issues did you find as I am not a native English speaker and this was done over 16 years ago. Regards

This is an excellent video, sir! Very well done! The only thing that I didn't particularly like was the lady with that saxophone. She was a tad bit comical for me.

been loving this song since i was 15(my play list back then; ll cool j, billy joel n.w.a..lol)...this song was alway a movie to me. you have just added to my life, thanks...i enjoyed this.

I dunno, depends on the friendship. You should see me w/ some of my old friends/ex flames, PARTICULARLY when we're getting back in touch after years. Facebook has certainly provided some fun that way. & hubby is glad to see me finding old friends. He knows we're good. ;-)

@woddyhayes78 You're absolutely right. We had rented the sax from a music store and none of us knew how to play it. If you notice the girl's mouthpiece is upside down and the blond guy is holding it from the thumb rest!... :-) LOL. A few years after doing this video I took some sax lessons, so if I ever do a remake, I'll get it right! Thnk you very much for your comment.

Delightful! I hope Mr Joel has seen it.

I've always loved this some, maybe the best song from that decade. I always thought it cinematic and long plotted in my mind a video. I had more slow fades and sepia colors but the characters and locations you filmed were MUCH as I imagined, so my hat is off to you, sir, for the talent and motivation to complete such a work. I wonder if Billy has seen it? I think he'd like it. I sure do.

@ArwellJones Wow! Thank you very much for your kind comments. Indeed, this footage was shot over 20 years ago with S-VHS (not the best quality, even back then) and with no budget at all since it was a college production. It was truly a labor of love, edited in a linear S-VHS suite without the benefit of today's computers. I've tried to have Billy Joel see it, just for the heck of it, but that has proven harder than I thought... but I keep on dreaming :-)

Beautiful video. I love this song, and this is exactly how I pictured it in my mind as I listened. I shed a tear for Brenda and Eddy as I type this.

I am so impressed with this video. I've always wanted to shoot something for this song. But would not even try as it would pale in comparison to this. This is perfect. Yeah the video quality is a little rough, but jeez the footage is 20 years old. I would love to see it remastered and cleaned up. It is so inspiring to see this. I gotta say too, this video has such a nice feel of a classic (real) music video from that era. I just can't praise this enough. Hats off!!!!!

Loved it! Just one very small problem. The dress was off by a decade or so. LOL The Poodle skirts and hair were the 50's. By the time Brenda and Eddie marry in 75 Woodstock and the Summer Of Love in San Fran had already happened. LOL Tie dyed shirts, bell bottoms, mini skirts, tube tops and long hair on both the guys and the girls more fit the period. Still very well done none the less!

@moutal And another thing.... linear!!! No Final Cut Pro or Premiere AND you were just kids. Amazing. I had my wife watch it and explained that to her. She didn't get it (hehehe) I told her.... "This guy's my new hero...:)" Now I am done gushing.... lol. Keep it up and again, good luck.

Trust me, there is not a single thing wrong with the interpretation. It's lovely & clear & very, very sweet. If Mr. Joel ever sees it, I'm sure he will appreciate all the work & care put into it.
