There is a blanket statement " houses and fields of those who invade and suppress".  I know this was a propaganda film and the idea was to keep the folks at home angry and in a fighting mood.  But truth is, Hitler and his ilk were a very small minority in Germany.  The German people didn't really understand what he was capable of until it was too late.  The death camps were top-secret and Hitler and his bubbas wanted it kept that way, to keep the people from turning on him.  His people were caught in this war and conscripted to fight.  They didn't have a blanket evil agenda.  The big bullies were Hitler's top people and the SS.  All else?  Just common soldiers doing a job that they were drafted to do.  It is really easy to make this black and white and to try to define good and evil by the countries involved.  But it's far more complicated than that.  It's important to realize when a people are being used, and manipulated with fear and hate and propaganda.  It's very important TODAY to not ignore lessons of the past.

Susan, Jjust for argument your premise is true. How would that change the fact they should not have been destroyed and defeated? Is being too stupid to fall into the trap of evil people make you saints? Remember the road to hell is paved with good intentions. What about that? Isn't there some responsibility at some level? Couldn't they leave, quit or fight against be an option? You are too simplistic and forgiving. Let's ask the ones who were under attack, oppression, exterminated, and so on if they felt the average one was so innocence. Sure the was propaganda to fight against them. But overall, wasn't that a good thing? Imagine them winning. How would the world be now? With your lack of intellect, even you would have been exterminated by now. If not, your children. I would never, but they would have.

What happens to the men who bailed out the fallen B17 ??

As a Brit I should start going on about how the Lancaster had a heavier pay load and bla bla bla, but instead I'm just going to say in a beauty contest, the B17 wins hands down. :P

Why do bomber crews wear the headsets over their caps? I find this act very ridiculous. They could have just taken off their caps, and kept them off through out the flight

Wait Germany terrorizing Europe 2x in one decade? First, Germany didn't start ww1 nor did they do anything terrifying. They fought just because their allies were attacked or were engaged in war. Similar to how Russia. Britain and France got involved, their allies got attacked. World war II was started by them but due to the influence of the unfair Treaty of Versailles. It was extremely unfair and is what provoked the civilian support of the Nazi regime.

You dont even make sense and your history is terrible.

It's pretty simple dude, the great depression + treaty of versilles = nazi Germany & ww2. With out those Hitler would never have got the platform he needed to rise to power.

So, my 95 year old grandfather, quickly and peacefully, passed away this morning. The news came to us as a surprise... well, as much as the passing of a 95 year old person can be. He was an interesting fellow, not soon forgotten by those who met him. Flying was his first love. He joined the Army Air Corp (soon to be the Air Force) as a pilot a few months before Pearl Harbor and continued for more than twenty years. During my youth, every trip to D.C. featured a visit to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, where we would wander around as he played 'Flew it!, Flew it!, Didn't fly it!' with the planes as though they were trading cards in a pack. I wish that I better remembered which were which, so that I could tell my nephew about his great-grandfather. I already miss him terribly. He would have appreciated (but still manage to find fault with) the following clip... #grandpa   #wwiipilots   #curmudgeon

I hope that that's the case.  Thank you for your kind words, he was certainly a unique individual that will be missed

And if Hitler would have listened to his generals all americans and british soldiers would have been killed at D-day.. We can keep on discussing but it is a historic fact that without the help of the sovjet union in the east, germany had way better chanches of winning the war. Don't forget that!

Did they hit anything? Looked like a lot of bombs went in the water

You do realise that before they changed the canopy the P-51 had poor visibility & even with the Merlin V12 the P-51 couldn't reach Germany without drop tanks. While the P-51 was fitted with the Allison V12 it's role as a fighter was limited as it was near useless above 15,000ft with the introduction of the Merlin V12 it went from a limited role fighter to a multi role fighter like what the Spitfire was which had a Service ceiling of 43,500 ft which is higher than the Mustangs

no... That would be very stupid to think so... I said he almost died when the house he lived in was hit by a bomb...

u say "dehousing and demoralizing", like it's a bad thing, would have been fine if they really eliminated 600k Germans in Dresden, not the actual 25k

Great film, thanks for posting. The airfield here is Bassingbourn, Cambs, and the raid is probably the one on 15th May 1943. To all those arguing as if the war were still on - grow up. Your freedom to argue on the internet is thanks to these crews who fought and died for YOUR freedom. Never forget that - we all owe them our thanks.

anzacproun The design criteria for the P51 changed from the time it was first designed to it becoming a long range escort. When the USAAF desided they needed a long range escort the P51 was the best candidate for the job.Drop tanks were and are a means to the end. The P51 still evolved into the definitive WWII piston engined fighter, and it did its job..

So are you saying that because the Allies had MORE bombers than the Germans & were able to do more damage that it exonerates the Germans & vilifies the Allies. Sorry but to me that smacks of hypocrisy on your part.

Despite the bravery, suffering and devotion to duty I've come to the conclusion that the whole affair was a monumental waste of lives and material. If only conflict could be avoided in the first place. Still, as long as humans live there will always be a fight going on somewhere I suppose.

Stats from that site now all you have to do is convert them into percentages Housing & property damage •2,306 houses destroyed or required demolition. •5,930 houses required evacuation while repairs were done. •41,500 houses suffered some damage. •624 shops destroyed. •111 out of 180 factories damaged, 75 of them destroyed - many minor businesses make up these figures. •28 hotels, 80 garages & 121 offices destroyed. That looks like targeting Civilians to me.

Yep, you're right. I always wonder how most people of today think that the happenings back then were so definite. I mean: Until Operation Barbarossa, the Western Allies didn't know on which side Stalin really was - they seriously were afraid of an alliance between the Germans and Soviets, as von Ribbentrop and Molotov made plans for both nations before on their meeting. Still, I believe that Germany wouln't have had the militaric potential to conquer all of the USSR in any time.

Thank you very much. I'm also happy to finally meet someone who is really objective and well-informed. And yes, it's ridiculous to anyone who realizes the first time that it was (despite of all the massive bombings) the year 1944 when Germany produced most of it's armory in absolute numbers. The rise of the Reich really was made possible by huge credits, huge projects (Autobahn) and successful (mainly civil) enterprises like the IG Farben. I think they didn't deal with a WW at the beginning.

I was 7 when the war started and 11 when it ended. I vividly remember it from the movies, newsreels, and newspaper accounts. I remember when D-Day occurred the newspaper headlines were passed around on the grammar school playground. These aircrew members and all other fighting men and women were my heroes, and still are.

anzacproud. The P51 was not originally designed for escort use. Britain needed fighter, anything they asked NAA to build P40 they refused built P51. Later when an escort fighter was needed it was developed for that role. It was the best design available most effiencent design that could hold enough fuel to fly to Berlin, something no other fighter could do.Thats why USSAF had NAA working on Merlin installation. You'v'e not told me anything I dont already know.it became war changer,,

We never called for you're help in the war, you supplied us with war materials, but you only came into the war because the Japanese entered it, attacking Pearl Harbor. It was all of the allies who won the war together, not because of one particular country, but all of them put together.

Don't ever think WE allies will forget what Germany did to the world TWICE. Yes Russia had a leader the same evil as Germany at the time - BUT Germany's leader was intent on ruling the world and wiping out over three quarters of the world's population at the same time!!! From your earler comments, clearly your are an anti-semite...Which just proves the reason why the brave USAAF and RAF bombers needed to flatten Germany...You truly espouse evil intent!

My neighbor told me the year before his death that he had done 50 combat missions over occupied Europe as the pilot of a B-24; he said he did a double tour because he was sure he'd not get shot down. His wife and daughter had known he was in the Air Corps, but knew nothing of what he did. His name was Thomas Holmes, and he was an unassuming hero, originally from L'Anse, Michigan[up at the base of the Keewanaw Peninsula.

The Luftwaffe had made a very thorough reconnaissance of the city and knew where the most important factories were. Planning for the raid on Coventry was equally as thorough as the Luftwaffe planned to be as destructive as was possible. Their plan was for a east to west flight over the city followed by a west to east attack. The intention was to create a firestorm within the city that would destroy factories and totally break the morale of the people there.

anzacproud I know the P51 was the best fighter of WWII. Did YOU know that the original Allison powered P51 weren't underpowered?? they were designed as a low altitude fighter with a engine that had a single stage supercharger. They were as fast or faster than a Spit below 15,000 Ft Did you also know that North American started working on the Merlin installation within 2 weeks of when the Brits got the Idea, The Brits were not alone. Also all Merlins in P51 were US Made by Packard.....

Actually, not so hilarious. Hitler was astounded that Roosevelt gave the Commies as much aid as he did....Mountains of war material. After all, Hitler knew Roosevelt had experience dealing with American communist/labor movements during the Great Depression so also recognized the threat. Also the whole world knew that the horrific Soviet famine of the mid-1930's was a direct result of the actions of Joseph Stalin. Plus, Stalin directly assisted Hitler against Poland in 1939.

My Grandmother lost her younger brother and sister to the Luftwaffe bombers in Coventry...She was 16 at the time and had to help dig them out. She cried for them for the rest of her life! She enjoyed watching the bombers fly out to the continent when we, the Allies, finally had the upper hand, BUT she did mention that she felt so sorry for the kids...Like I would especially to those such as yourself. Without the introduction of the Merlin V12 into the P-51 it would have remained as a mediocre fighter with limited roles. After it was fitted with the Merlin V12 it was the best American fighter of the War as for it being the best fighter of the War that debate as been raging for decades between the P-51 & the Spitfire as Spitfires were faster, had a higher service ceiling & a faster climb rate as well as being able to out turn P-51's. Plus's for P-51's was it's range & rate of roll .

And the same can be said about the USA ... infact you guys would have stayed out of the European theatre altogether if we'd lost the Battle of Britain. You needed a free and sovereign Britain or there would have been no D-Day landings. Don't tell me to stfu sport. I respect most Americans and I respect US military history. We all know the USA tipped the balance in favour of the allies ... but don't belittle British people and our war efforts. We don't appreciate it.
