The Chantels - Maybe (1958)

I believe we lost something when this style of dance music fell by the wayside for British rock groups, strobe lights and worse for the past three decade of  angry inner city  gangster rap.       Only one mans opinion!

+dave Drolett Dave your opinion is qualitative as apposed to the quantitative mass produced mantra like noise pollution that Mk ultra probably experimented with called dance music of today...

after 300 yrs of being culturally massacred on slave plantations, forced into ignorance and superstition, forced to wear white peoples names and believe in a fake white jesus, it's purely fascinating that Blacks (TRUE Judah) could still sing such beautiful music.  MUST be God's chosen.  Shalom

I wasn't around during the 50's for I was born in the 90's But I wish I was there in the 50's. From what some of the older realetives tell me. It was so much better back then. And I agree. Better music, cheaper and better fast food, no sagging thugs walking on the streets. Seemed great.

Boom, you seem to have a thing about my comment. "Atrocities" have happened all through human history. Done by many people. Many in the last 4 centuries, done by christians. Yes, by all means jihad has cost lives. I have yet to see, christians in congress, embrace peace. You need look no further than last week's letter from the 47 senators, looking to start the next war! Sorry, we don't "OWN" the middle east. No different than Vietnam, where a tiny country fought for their freedom to choose. Believed they were right and entitled to that. We seem to think we have all the answers. Religion is not a panacea for the world's problems. Nor is our aircraft carrier diplomacy. With 7 billion on the planet, and only 330 million americans. We don't know everything, and have the answer for all. As for your insults...who cares!

On this day in 1958 {March 23rd} the Alan Freed's 'Big Beat Show' played the Convention Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania... One of the show's acts was the Chantels and at the time the group's "Maybe"" was tied at #23* on Billboard's Top 100 chart, the month before on February 16th it peaked at #15... "Maybe" was their second biggest hit, their biggest was "Look In My Eyes", which peaked at #14 in 1961... * The week it was at  #23 the three other records it was tied with were "Shorts Shorts" by the Royal Teens, "Good Golly, Miss Molly" by Little Richard, and "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling in Love again" by Jimmie Rodgers...

Strange as it may seem I had not Heard this one.  There was so much music being made then as is true today there are some songs and tunes one does not hear.  I like the girls' voices.

This wonderful group, with the great songs, "Maybe" & "Look In My Eyes" was the first big influence of an amazing "girl group" wave, of the early to mid 60's.  I loved it all.

I really do miss these days.I really had a lot of fun growing up in the 1950s.Hardly anybody locked their doors and nobody ever came in to steal or anything else.I also remember music like this. I was just 11 when this song was released but I can remember it. There was the swinging side to rock and roll but was all innocent fun.

Is this live?---makes my day & lots of us "kids."
Report spam or abuse
No, they were lip syncing.
Report spam or abuse
Yes, the performance is live in the Eastern time zone. The medium is kinoscope, an interlocking device between the live performance and its preservation for later broadcast in the other time zones. Many of the preserved performances on YU are kinoscope recordings. And John Smith is right. They were lip synching.

Back in the 50's & 60's most west coast white teens never cared if a group was black or white. We just loved the music the songs and beat and the new age of wild rock N roll Did not care about skin color. But blacks play great soul ,blues to rock all great..

Check out Raphael Saadiq - Stone Rollin' or James Hunter - No Smoke Without Fire. Those two should lead to other good new stuff. Also, Miles Kane is pretty amazing.

I think music sung by black people back in the 50's is better than white people, and I am white, not to be racist or anything. I hate racism!
