When You Are A King ♫ WHITE PLAINS - mega-rare TV footage

by saveyourkisses4me • 365,600 views

White Plains performing the hit When You Are A King on London Line TV show.

Does anybody have the album/L.P.  "When You Are A King". I am trying desperately to find only 2 tracks from that album/L.P. They are "Home Lovin' Man"  (or "Home Loving Man", depending whether you have the U.K. or U.S.A. version of the album/L.P.),  and "An Eye For The Main Chance". Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thank You T.C.
I remember my dad coming home with the demo disc for this before release, in a box of demos given to him by Harry Barter who was a mate. I was immediately smitten and i bet i still have it up in the loft. We are from Bristol and my dad also knew Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway. Our house was full of their music and I used to know all the lyrics before the songs got into the charts. No wonder I became a singer :-)
I can upload on youtube in 4 weeks time. Or email you mp3. Ill drop you line on this thread when I get back to my studio.
Gosh this IS rare. Gem.
I love this record! Talk about childhood memories! Happy days from 1971!
was 8 when this came out. beautiful song.
I was 11 in 1971, this song really takes me back, beautiful
Beautiful song. How much of today's rubbish will sound just as good 45 years on?
As amazing in 2014 as it was in 1971.  Whatever happened to music like this?  '*(
+jason75 HA! HA!  Actually, I'm a lot older than you think, jason75!
+Steve-Oh! Duncan  Well you look 19, you look young. Im 45 turning 46 already middle age. You look young for your age.
I remember how it wasn't hip to like this stuff in 1971 but what a stunning song now
I was 11 then, I loved this on tv, it reminds me of being on holiday with my Grandad singing it in the park.
this one takes me back fab

זה של שלמה ארצי
Yes Harry Barter (b-side songwriter) was Cook and Greenaway manager. They produced this for White Plains. Spoke/saw Harry 2 years ago and far as i know still keeping well.
just beautiful  thank you
Wow. Tony Burrows was a workaholic.
no Tony Burrows on this one Barry I am afraid.........The great Pete Nelson RIP singing on here.

I never get tired of hearing this.  A classic.
i look at my little boy when hes asleep and sing this song
The lady making the introduction is Jomoke Debayo, you used to see her a lot on television in the 70s. I wonder if she is still alive?
Love Honour and Obey - Ray Winstone- brought me here. Love it.
Great film . So many great quotes
This was covered by the Israeli singer Shlomo Artzi.  Sung in Hebrew it was called "Melech Ha'ola" ("King of the World").
This is in my top ten favourite songs! Happy memories x

I love this song very much! Shlomo Artzi translate the song to Hebrew
This song's rhythm is nuts. And the chorus has the most 3-centric meter I've ever heard.
Yes!!! The hot summer of 71...Torbay UK...Just to go back then..Lovely times
They dont seem to come around here (Chester area)so wont get the chance to see them .I will have to make do with youtube.I went to see brian ferry once and had a shock when he came on stage. The last time i saw him was on a video with roxy music.Had to take all the mirrors out of the house!!
Same here - all before the grown up crap comes along.
Hi Peters Daughter has been chatting further back.regarding her dad and the band.worth a look.Regards.
christmas present was a front loading red plastic record player that only played (& shredded) 45's. this record was the 3rd shredded after ,something happin- hermans hermits & yester me yester you yesterday-stevie wonder - doesn't ,mean it's bad though.

WAY COOL!! Awesome post, thank you and thanks SLUMBERS2 for the share..:) peace and love
Interesting video. Not sure I'm familiar with this group. Don't recall ever hearing them here in the US. Thanks for sharing and introducing them to me. Regards, Ed
Excuse my ignorance, but what the hell is a 3-centric meter when its at home?
beautiful song if you want to listen to the hebrew version, copy this to the search bar: בשבילה אתה מלך העולם choose the first result. it's also nice.
Still up. Terrific. The Lp's are not so common anymore.
A beautiful song of childhood innocence that we'll never have again. Brings back wonderful memories. Thanks for posting
this song makes me fell like a king
Hello guys new to this but amazing footage of White Plains. What a voice Pete Nelson had .must have missed out somewhere along the way.He could have done a lot better i guess.Anyone know who the guy on the squeezebox is ?
A real lovely song, makes me think of my wonderful childhood. Sarahw59, just ignore them and enjoy what you like;-}
What Memories, that must have been the best time ever to be a teenager. Ray.
I love that song , I would love to go back to those days . Thanks for putting it on .
beautiful, understated genius.
Good song but slightly too slow
God ! What unexpected and lovely look back ... 39 years earlier ! Sorting out things this week, I find a full box of old records ... I thought lost ! Among them " When You are a King " by White Plains ... and opening You Tube ... just as quickly ... I immediately recognize this melody, and I remember this song ... I loved & bought in Clevedon, Somerset, England ... that July 71. What a good song ! What a nice melody ! What a sweet dream, being a King ? ... someday ! At least pretending !!!
Fighting in the rain, with whatshiname; shoe-black on your face....god this is childhood in a beautiful essence!!
lovely song.Did i hear the singer sadl passed away some time last year?
I came across this song by chance, I hadn't heard it in over 40years. I had forgotten just how brilliant it sounds. Why can't they compose songs like this nowadays? The music of the 60s had a certain something, the music now has a certain big nothing!!!!
Did I imply odd meters are wrong? No. Then STFU noob.
It's meant to be slow to capture the melancholic feel.
The first time I heard this song I was 6, that 1972 year, in Mexico. Wonderful song!
This is such a beautiful song...and i agree with Lyonfrance many great memories as well...
So glad to find this, I loved it....
My mum used to sing this to me when I was little. Only problem is it should have been 'When you are a Queen'...slight gender issue.
I feel the lyrics to this song are good, but not timeless, as royalty gets more unpopular with time. The tune however, IS good, and IS timeless. But needs different lyrics, (and title), to become a 'better song'.
Would you have the chords for this song please?
I am so sorry and sad for your loss...sending big (((hugs))) to you and your family xx
Sod the 'royal baby'...another kid for the ultimate benefits family
Why do people write such horrid comments about such good songs?!
Julian Phillips used to sing this to my son Morgan whenever he cried as a baby. Morgan adored Julian, but we lost touch after he moved to Australia. Makes me cry to remember really happy loving times. thankyou
Nice Vid.. pity about the ad along the top
a great song and great times then
hebrew version of this song: watch?v=QmPifa-flH4
bet Paul Mcartny wishes he could have writen this lovely song but sincere and tastfull unlike todays pop balads
Big hugs to Ray and you, can see why this song would make you cry after that. Have a happy rest of life. x
Great song - of course, written by professional songwriters helps a lot. But White Plains were another (there are many) band cobbled together to capitalise on a studio produced recording. Tony Burrows - the best voice in popular music but never got all the credit he deserved. At one time he was lead singer in half the "top ten" Top of the Pops - with "bands" miming away to studio records they had never heard of s week or two before...
Started singing this to my son this morning and had to look it up!! Played it half a dozen times so far :D
Tony Hiller always gives a good word about Roger Hills when his name comes up in conversation. Fabulous song!
@judgedreadmusic I used to know Judge Dread in the 70's. He used to buy many singles from my record stall down in Medway Kent.
that song is definitely about me! xDDDDDDDD
@phil1958uk ..foget royalty its all about when you are a kid not king...
One of my favourite songs, love it!
