THE SHIRELLES - SOLDIER BOY 1962

by tommy194070 • 1,039,189 views

Reached No. 1 on US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

My boyfriend/husband was in the Air Force and were in love when he went to Germany. We thought this song said it best so it became our song.We are married now for 50 years and 5 adult children who have their own children now, we have 14 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren . We have a wonderful family.

My soldier boy is my inner divine child. We have been separated for a long time but our love is The eternal kind. She is now, my number one true love, and I love her very much. We are both grateful that We have been reunited in Joy.

This has got to be remastered, it lacks the vinyl warmth.  Sad today's kids will never know it...

I was away in the service for only two months before my "girlfriend" wrote me a "dear john" letter and broke my heart.  But you know what?  I didn't give up and that same "girlfriend" has now been my wife for over 47 wonderful years!

Sorry but they have nothing on Diane Renay who made this song first. Look her up. She also recorded Navy Blue and Sailor Boy.

This song is sill one of my all time favorites; We loved to hear it played in Chu Lai, RVN in the 60's;  It still brings back memories to me today as to how this song seemed to draw me so close to my wife and children who were back home and missing me so much!  Kenneth Alan Raby, (COL. Ret.)

THE SHIRELLES EMBODY JOY AND HAPPINESS WITH THEIR MUSIC OF AN ERA WHEN THE NATION WAS IN TURMOIL WHERE PEOPLE WERE TREATED UNJUSTLY . WHEN WILL PEOPLE LEARN THAT ALL MANKIND SHOULD BE TREATED WITH RESPECT AND DIGNITY AND APPRECIATED? THEIR TALENT IS TIMELESS WITH THEIR SONGS OF A HAPPY TIME WHEN PEOPLE COULD EXPRESS THEIRSELVES THROUGH DANCE AND MUSIC.

This song was originally the 'flip side' song for Baby It's You. They didn't have a flip side song for the 45 so Luther Dixon wrote this song in less than 15 minutes and told the girls to sing for the flip side- and the rest is history! Great song.

One of the first times I heard this, I knew that I was destined to be a "soldier boy". I spent a total of 17 years service, and to this day... I love this song. I have been long retired, but this song has not.!

1970, I was stationed at Ft. Knox, KY. MOS 95B20, Senior Military Police. The PX on 7th Ave. had a hugh bar area and "food court" and as it was a place that fights broke out often, my partner & I would stop in at least once while on patrol. This song was on the gigantic juke box & was playing pretty much 24/7. These poor 18 year olds were sitting around drinking "green" Army beer crying and playing this song. I told the manager of the place he should take this song off the juke box. He replied that if he did the place would be empty and they made a lot of money on the beer.
