the whole point of a railgun is magnetic launching, so how did you launch a non magnetic metal? (alluminium).

You're just confused, andrey. An ETC gun (electro-thermal chemical) operates the way you are describing. An electrical discharge into a conductive material heats it into a plasma and the pressure of the plasma propels a projectile down a regular gun barrel. Railguns operate as Sevalecan said.

On a final point, no tests have been apparently run on .50 calibre rounds, and currently they range 7 km. Not only is your science wrong your FACTS are wrong. I mean really, OZ? Really?

The MILITARY happen to be trying to use them as guns. Plasma is just as good a projectile in a railgun... until it hits the air, but that's not the point. Point is: this is a rail gun that fires plasma. That counts. They also tried to make coilguns that fired toroids of plasma from a satellite that would hold together through the atmosphere to hit hit something like enemy tanks so it flash converts to fast neutrons, killing the crew but leaving the vehicle for capture. Didn't work though.

what are the requirements for a good rail? i have 4 photo flash capacitors and mine wont shoot. do the rails have to be a certain size and what material did you use?

I used an single-use-camera flash circuit. powered by a simple 1.5V AA battery.

@bigbang308 2. You can charge the capacitors by holding the (+) of the battery to the one end, and the (-) of the battery to the other end of the capacitor. Be careful, 5 Seconds after starting to charge the capacitor gives the capacitor a strong enough energy to shock you. They can even kill you, if they are fully charged. You discharge them by connecting the ends of the capacitors to each other, or discharge them slowly by using a resistor. I would not do discharge them with my fingers.

@diseliprojects Pure iron pellets work great :) And, sparks only come from plasma generated since the alu-foil is thin and is relatively easy to melt.. I don't know if you actually could shoot anything with it, 'cause I'd think that the whole alu-pellet is molten in the process, making only shiny sparks but nothing else.. or? :P

Lol, I built one with nearly 3000J... that's over 150 times more powerful than this! Very nice work here though, it had good integrity. You should block off the back end to give it higher pressure though, that will immediately increase the muzzle velocity.

You are right. The left and the right rail produce a magnetic field. The third magnet will be the projectile. Because the current flows also thru the projectile. If the projectile movable, it will be accelerated. (movable short)

each wire acts as a magnet and when the projectile is inbetween also acts like a magnet and all three magnets have the same poles facing each other so they push away from eachother but nevermind im pretty shure its lorentz force

I read the discussion below... Funny. justinhoman has the gist of it, Al is a non-ferrous metal and is not affected by magnetic force which is what both Coil AND Rail guns use to propel their rounds. It IS possible to have Al and Pb rounds however when they are using a ferrous metal sheath around them (a.k.a. Sabot rounds) which is what the military uses to fire its railgun rounds. Yes, yes I know that rail guns use a pulsing current down the rails to propel the round, it's still EM.

Well, the calculation of J is the following: I used 7 photo capasitors with each 120 yF at 330V. U = 330V C = 120yF x 7 = 840yF yF -> F is 1/1'000'000 C = 0.00084F E= (1/2) x C * U * U E= 45.738J E= 0.045738kJ I hope I didn't make a mistake. :o)

Actually, the direction isn't determined by the RHR. It goes away from the wires that feed power to the rails.

I have to chime in here. What is happening here is not a rail gun. All he is doing is vaporising a piece of foil and since it has only on way to go the sparks shoot out that way. There is no projectile being propelled as there was not one loaded. In a rail gun part of the projectile is intended to vaporize to propel the rest. But here there is nothing left to propel. You could get the same result just by putting the same piece of foil between the two wires from the caps. There is no lorentz here

Railgun uses EMF and if you know the hand rule you can determine where F (force) will be pointed, the two rails are charged and both generate electro-magnetic force in the same direction sending the projectile with great speed.

The problem is that the projectile of what ever material, must not be on fixed contact with the rails that makes a solid short and welds it in place it couldn't stand the current so it exploded instead. Power labs gun uses compressed air to slam the slug onto the rails at high speed. Good start though

No. A railgun is two rails one of which is charged negatively and the other positively, usually by connecting each in a DC circuit to a capacitor to release enough energy fast enough. Any conductive projectile, including a small mass of plasma, that completes the circuit allows current to flow and by the Biot-Savart law, generates opposing forces on the rails and the armature, and rails being static with those bolts through them, only the projectile can move. Sot it does so fast.

I think bismuth is the wrong material to get a better result. You need a material with low electric resistance. Aluminium, copper, silver and gold should be better. ;o) Less resistance produce a higher magnetic field.

The formula for energy stored in a capacitor E=.5CV^2 Then by algebra one can solve for the capacitance: 38J=C(250V)^2 C=349uF

Looks After Effects'd If it does work, though, Pre-charged energy cells would be needed along with the ammo to make this a conceivable weapons system, so I don't think infantry will have use for a railgun in the near future.

I was gonna explain but aurora7641 did and in a better way then i could have. Basically know the charge (magnetic) of the projectile and point the rail gun magnets in the same direction as to push the projectile down the barrel in the way you would want it to go. Increases velocity, damage, and range by a giant amount. The Navy wants to have railguns on battleships that can fire at 200 + miles, which i believe current guns go about 20-25 miles maybe less.
