Jack Horner: Building a dinosaur from a chicken

by TED • 231,986 views

http://www.ted.com Renowned paleontologist Jack Horner has spent his career trying to reconstruct a dinosaur. He's found fossils with extraordinarily well-preserved blood vessels and soft tissues,...

You know what annoys me? We don't get to see the hatchling! We get to see the embryo with teeth and tails, but they never show us what it looks like when it hatches! Unless it dies before then, but I really want to see one.
He's not funny. How is he a standup comedian???
+NamelessPoster scientists have given teeth to birds and lengthen their tails. I have seen the pictures.
+NamelessPoster what nasa speaker said unscientific things?
If anyone has read the book jurassic park you would know they took bones from the northern dig sites and got dna from that aswell. Also they were aware it is not accurate dinosaurs because of the new dna put in.
It's been a few years since his book (which I recommend) and this talk came out, and since then, people have been talking about recreating much more recent species, such as the woolly mammoth or Irish elk, or even species that went extinct in historic times like the aurochs, dodo, passenger pigeon or thylacine. Yet, it seems the fervor to have non avian dinosaurs again diminished. Will this plan ever be realized? Will we truly see dinosaurs (non avian ones) walk among us? Only time will tell, but I sure hope so.
well its an age problem..dinosaurs come from WAY further back than the other ones you mentioned. Finding DNA/protein from such beings is nearly impossible as of now whereas the others are actually possible. The chances of finding DNA that could be used diminishes with time..and I'm not talking finding samples from 10-15 thousand years ago, which is kinda doable..if we are talking dinosaurs its more like 80-100 million years ago or so..thats why scientists have dropped that idea. You might get to see a chicken dinosaur in your lifetime though :) and thats kinda interesting.
This video alone pretty much proves Evolution.  Just the images of the embryo pigeon wings and tails looking just like the  bones of a dinosaur.
Oh jeez, you are SOOOO unsceptical, lol.
Hang on, are people still talking about proving evolution? Evolution is gravity and time. A solid fact.
It's actually not as easy to clone a Dino as he says, take it from a Doctor.
Evolution is a pseudoscience.
I hope to god that one day dinos come back to life. like nature is like you guys have been dead for too long we are gonna start making you again.
Fascinating. With 90% of our DNA apparently redundant, I can't help but think about how much of our ancestry is written into that DNA and just what might be possible were we able to manipulate that DNA. How completer picture of our evolution is actually still there in our DNA, how far back we could literally read that ancestral line, or even recreate, if we even wanted to. I'm sure it'd be far too fragmented to create exact replicas of what we were say 50 million years ago, but still, something to ponder. :)
When the egg hatches, T-rex jumps out. "I'm back, bitches!"

Jack Horner: Building a dinosaur from a chicken: http://youtu.be/0QVXdEOiCw8
If you could create a chickenosaurus that could be trained to be docile and carnivorous, you could make a LOT of money in the pet trade. Shit, I'd love to take a chickenosaurus out for a walk on a leash. Very interesting TED talk...
+Mike Krammer It may be possible to manipulate them to the point of superior intelligence. Imagine that, having the roles reversed where they lock us up in cages. They would even open a restaurant chain called KFH, Kentucky Fried Humans.
or he might eat you just like chicken eat worms
i dont think we well we cant start from a trex we have to start small compy triceratops one of thoose
I like his humour.
he is a paleontologist.
It's been more than 2 years. Where's my chickenosaurus?
It's kind of non-sense that you wouldn't be able to extract DNA other than that of mosquitos from a blood stuffed mosquito. We do this with malaria parasites as well. Thing is that the likelyhood of finding intact insect blood would be very low but it would be possible. 15 million year old Amber was found and malaria parasite DNA was extracted from it; http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/11/111102125650.htm Ok, still not far old enough and parasite genomic DNA is way smaller in quantity and there are many other technical problem, but theoretically it was not such a bad idea in 1990. Chichton was a quite a visionary when it came to science fiction!   The idea about Amber is that DNA would be better conserved.
this would be awesome
Just go to the Congo and find mkele membe a long neck claimed by locals to still exist. If h find it bring it back so we can ride it and slide of its tail like Fred flinstone !!!!
If this is still being worked on why not use raptors instead of chickens?
i want to be a paleontologist too, and i am dyslexic too :D
Why chicken??? .... you have crocodiles
+myjfff actually ostridge is the oldest living bird, which means the closest genetically to dinosaurs. chicken is used for the preliminary tests
+Branko Bojanic Very true. An ostrich does have a similar build to certain theropods.
Crocodiles? Seriously??
okay its 2014 i first seen this years ago and first heard of this idea years ago so now have they done it!?i know they were trying it and now its been years so?
Takes time kiddo. Why don't you do your part, and get into the field.
what a degenerate. this is retarded
its been five years since this talk ''09''. Were is the dinochicken?
Well, they are hardly funding this with the kind of cash to make it quickly. If they had US Military level funding, you would already have one.
Great argument. I think this could actually work.
"fix the chicken" lol very refreshing discussion on evolution, well done.
veloci chicken I am ready for that petting zoo to open.
They should multiply the gene that makes chicken legs have scales to all the body and "highjack" its DNA to have the scales be darker colors like grey or dark brown
Well... Most raptors and even some tyrannosaurs had feathers, so with feathers it would be closer to a dinosaur.
you could feed a large family with dinomeat !!!!
wow, he's a good speaker! this was very fun to watch

Remember that xkcd comic about how birds are dinosaurs and thus the world is good? (http://xkcd.com/1211/) Well, Jack Horner wants to build a dinosaur from a chicken and make the world even better! ;) It can be hard to believe that a bird is a dinosaur. Like Horner says, if you tell that to any 6th grader they'll say, "But look at the velociraptor. The velociraptor is cool! The chicken is not." And then they demanded: "Fix the chicken!" So in the last part of this talk (after about 9:37), Jack Horner discusses how he plans to fix the chicken.
'designer' creatures; finally getting down to 'uncurving' evolution?Going from 'incensing' people with 'evolution' to making 'monsters' with it? Its a strange world. I'm looking forward to such things, just so people will stop the dumb arguments of 'Creationism'! That having a 'natural history' is in all the genes of 'living' lifeforms.

Stand-up comedy for eggheads. I want my #chickenosaurus. A chicken-size #velociraptor. How cool is that?!

Making the chicken cool  - love it :)

New techniques for activating dormant genes (Atavism Activation) in birds, such as chickens, has allowed scientists to practice "Reverse Evolution". Very interesting. Book, if anyone's interested: http://books.google.co.uk/books/about/How_to_Build_a_Dinosaur.html?id=8r6srxaLX1QC
Also, if you listen hard enough, you can hear theists cringe.

Muy buena presentación de Jack Homer.. y como dice el jaja si tu le dices a un niño de 6to. año de primaria que una gallina es un dinosaurio como el velociraptor te diran que no jaja que el "velociraptor es cool" y la gallina no... jajaja

Why do it?  Cause we can :p
spam the fucking president this needs to happen!
wouldn't be the first person to play a fictitious character.
I'll repeat myself, since you're obviously blind: I'm a Christian. I'm not a fundamentalist extremist. If that's what you think Christians believe, then you have a very narrow-minded view. I believe in evolution and I study physics at the University. I'm still a spiritual person. I believe in the soul, I believe in divinity and I believe in a higher entity.
my bad. It's not just people that don't respect the tech that suffer :)
i want a chickenosaurus when they evolve
.....well I think the moral of JP was not to hire people with money troubles to run your multi-million dollar park single handedly
@RedlineMMA There has to be some undiscovered creature someone in our huge oceans, like the features most people don. See in the darkest parts of the ocean, there has been a good amount of time for something like a dinosaur to adapt and evolve.
Ohhhhhh would that I could; I would personally annihilate all traces and influence of this stagnant Judeochristian FAILURE and CURSE upon our future. Take your degenerate fiction and fall with it, into the dust; forever. Dogs of scum. Stop with the religious comments! I'm sick of this. Man is becoming God. God = will; the vessel describes her, now everyone should support and be fascinated with the amazing thought of recontstructing these magnificant creatures.
"That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows.", Luke 12:47-48 - And you're conclussion is, that this speaks of God? I think it speaks of society, of capitalism, of slavery. The order of Man. I assume the Bible preaches love, yes. I think we need more of it in this "enlightened world" of ours, with all that's going wrong. My parents are very proud of me. Unlike you, they're not judgemental and narrow-minded :)
There have been feathered Tyrannosaurs that have been found as well.
has anyone ever looked for dinosaurs in a peatbog they have found some very well preserved animals and even a man from the bronze age in one
but they can make a lot of other things like teeth and tail.
All modern birds share a common ancestor and are all more closely related to each other than to any other dinosaur. Modern birds did not evolve from "various types" after the extinction. They were already around when the extinction occurred.
so you line up pictures of bones that look similar and then say it evolved.. :/ i thought science always provides evidence, not assumption through fantasy.
As soon as they make this happen I'm painting it yellow, calling it Boko and dressing like Bartz from FF5 :D
we should make our own new life form we are now GOD
They didn't survive...the critter was dead. DNA is very fragile, but other hydrophobic organic tissues if insulated from the outside world by bone and solid rock can indeed avoid being metabolized by other organisms.
@Blegger1000. Looks like someone is out of a job the
No? I'm pretty sure the chicken came from a T. rex.
they will just create what they think dinosaurs look like. How will they know if it a real dinosaurs or not? maybe its another living thing xD
Because they can only use ,models of DNA and organic molecule degradation are quite faulty seeing as the half life/lifespan of DNA keeps changing, for example it started at 521 years then they sequenced the genes of 700 thousand year old extinct horse and now they say the lifespan is 7 to 6 million years.
no... because i eat Perdue. :D Those birdies live a nice life before um.... you know
Because it's not just scientists that pay mistakes for abusing science.
Despite the KFC remark, which was an obvious joke, I dont believe there are any plans to eat or release into the wild any of these 'chickenosauruses', so I really dont see any conflict of intrest from people who oppose GMO food & agriculture.
@devil4hunt actually most celosaurs (I think I spelt that wrong) and all maniraptors (including birds) were featherd. This includes T-Rex! Also all theropods (theoretically) were warm blooded
If the T-Rex and other dinosaurs mentioned in this lecture are in fact 70 million years old , how did the haem , blood vessels, osteocytes, medullary tissue, proteins etc on the inside of the bone survive ? There's no way that organic material could survive more than a few thousand years, let alone millions of years.
Man chose to destroy the dinosaurs. Read the Book Of Job...also tells us that the Earth is not flat, but is "a blue sphere hanging in the heavens, indeed hanging upon nothing at all." Read about "Behemoth" and "Leviathan." The "Fallen Ones" taught humans "cross-breeding" between the species. This is where T-Rex came from. Does anybody in the secular world know anything about DNA and RNA...Darwin sure didn't! He's an idiot, and his disciples like to "play GOD"...just like they do. Jesus Wins!
He even has the same initials as John Hammond...
Which person here thinks it is "ethical" for man to put his destroying, boastful hands into the building blocks of the Natural Order. Such a soul is "a hater of the Natural World"...who shall be given the opportunity to "justify themselves" on "Judgement Day." Remember..."All man imagines to do, I shall give him the power to do." ~ (Holy Bible). And "Iluminated Man" freely "chooses" to manufacture his own destruction. Proud, foolish souls. Know the love of Jesus..."The Living Truth." Amen.
So you believe that god cam down and impregnated some woman in an illetrate part of the middle east over 2000 years ago, and this baby, Jesus went around preforming miricles and was eventualy killed on a cross and came back 3 days later? Im hoping you dont think that the bible is the word of god, cause it wasnt created in 6 days, this science disproves the bible.
The chickens ancestor is "Tyrannosaurus Rex" and other birds species have different dinosaur ancestors, but it is in the name of science, yes?
no, your going to far back, the distance from dino to bird is much, much less
2013: Chicken Burger! 2019: Dino Burger!
Stop trolling you fucking idiot. god has nothing to do with this video, stop inundating us with your religious horseshit.
Jack should have ended the talk with: "...also, the day when we finally create the chickenosaurus, that will be the day when I finally get my dinosaur pet..." :)
This is by far the most awesome thing ever.
Being in the same clade makes them the same? I'll remember that next time I'm at KFC and order a bucket of dinosaur. :-P
