Jack Horner: Building a dinosaur from a chicken

by TED • 269,427 views

http://www.ted.com Renowned paleontologist Jack Horner has spent his career trying to reconstruct a dinosaur. He's found fossils with extraordinarily well-preserved blood vessels and soft tissues,...

"the Velociraptor is cool, the chicken is not."

which makes it much more scarier
Report spam or abuse
You know what annoys me? We don't get to see the hatchling! We get to see the embryo with teeth and tails, but they never show us what it looks like when it hatches! Unless it dies before then, but I really want to see one.

+Josef Therrien Yo' Bud. 'Direct' you questions. Go too the far right of the name to whom you are addressing. You'll see a hidden 'reply' tag pop on. Press that and you can respond to that person. Keeps things simple. If you wish to 'edit' you comment, there's a pop on in the same spot once you've hit 'post comment'. Please. Thx.

Werent they able to find some fragments of DNA and combine with chicken DNA to fill in the gaps?
Report spam or abuse
DNA doesn't survive for more than 3 million years
Report spam or abuse
All they will do with a chicken is eventually turn back the chickens clock to what it was like before. A chicken originated from the theropods going up to a Ceratosauria,  the coelophysoids and Ornitholestes. The chicken is actually a genetic relative of the T-Rex
Report spam or abuse
WELL, it taste like chicken.
Report spam or abuse
+ProjectsBlack I do not think that easy. genetic act certain way and one gene can effect the other. like try tune the clock back on modern car design to 1950 ones. there certain concepts that had be modified. it easier to turn alligator into some that looks raptor like through artifactual selection or genetic engineering. but the science do not want to go that route. plus artifactual selection is intelligent design method that tends look like natural selection. how ever the selective pressures is different.

I'm really looking forward to the day when they successfully hatch one of these, a healthy one without defects or anything that won't make it last a day or two. And I'll shout out a big F.U to the dumb creationists :P

If anyone has read the book jurassic park you would know they took bones from the northern dig sites and got dna from that aswell. Also they were aware it is not accurate dinosaurs because of the new dna put in.

Yo, Jack... maybe if you read more you would realize how ridiculous your Creationist delusions are. Then again, abandoning your religion might beyond you.

The dinosaurs only died out around 20,000 years ago. That's why they have soft tissue, and C14 in them.

+MilkMutt Yeah I realise any more than a phrase is too much for the wilfully ignorant.  A whole 5 sentences is too extreme for you.   You just further illustrated your ignorance and I wont let you hide it to continue the absurd ignorance. NO dinosaur fossils have EVER come back as just thousands of years old.  The youngest EVER dinosaur fossil dates to around 65 million years ago.

Sure, getting at atavistic genes buried in chickens for tails, teeth and clawed hands gets 9/10 for cool ... but ... why not start with a cassowary and get 11/10 for cool? After all, cassowaries might not eat you, but they have anger management issues, are big, fast, and happy enough to slash your guts open with their extra long toe in ways that would get a nod of applause from any velociraptor.

I hope to god that one day dinos come back to life. like nature is like you guys have been dead for too long we are gonna start making you again.

This video alone pretty much proves Evolution.  Just the images of the embryo pigeon wings and tails looking just like the  bones of a dinosaur.
Report spam or abuse
Hang on, are people still talking about proving evolution? Evolution is gravity and time. A solid fact.
Report spam or abuse
+Quixote1818 You can not prove anything, you can not prove I exist once you think of it. There for Evolution will never be proven just as I can not prove you exists. I can tell you that I exist, can can even touch you and talk to you but can not prove i existence.

Fascinating. With 90% of our DNA apparently redundant, I can't help but think about how much of our ancestry is written into that DNA and just what might be possible were we able to manipulate that DNA. How completer picture of our evolution is actually still there in our DNA, how far back we could literally read that ancestral line, or even recreate, if we even wanted to. I'm sure it'd be far too fragmented to create exact replicas of what we were say 50 million years ago, but still, something to ponder. :)

i dont think we well we cant start from a trex we have to start small compy triceratops one of thoose
Report spam or abuse
It's kind of non-sense that you wouldn't be able to extract DNA other than that of mosquitos from a blood stuffed mosquito. We do this with malaria parasites as well. Thing is that the likelyhood of finding intact insect blood would be very low but it would be possible. 15 million year old Amber was found and malaria parasite DNA was extracted from it; http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/11/111102125650.htm Ok, still not far old enough and parasite genomic DNA is way smaller in quantity and there are many other technical problem, but theoretically it was not such a bad idea in 1990. Chichton was a quite a visionary when it came to science fiction!   The idea about Amber is that DNA would be better conserved.

It's been a few years since his book (which I recommend) and this talk came out, and since then, people have been talking about recreating much more recent species, such as the woolly mammoth or Irish elk, or even species that went extinct in historic times like the aurochs, dodo, passenger pigeon or thylacine. Yet, it seems the fervor to have non avian dinosaurs again diminished. Will this plan ever be realized? Will we truly see dinosaurs (non avian ones) walk among us? Only time will tell, but I sure hope so.
Report spam or abuse
well its an age problem..dinosaurs come from WAY further back than the other ones you mentioned. Finding DNA/protein from such beings is nearly impossible as of now whereas the others are actually possible. The chances of finding DNA that could be used diminishes with time..and I'm not talking finding samples from 10-15 thousand years ago, which is kinda doable..if we are talking dinosaurs its more like 80-100 million years ago or so..thats why scientists have dropped that idea. You might get to see a chicken dinosaur in your lifetime though :) and thats kinda interesting.
Report spam or abuse
When can we see the chicken dino

Garbage.  That's all.  It's time scientists started listening to the 6th graders.  Oh, and humans don't have gills and they don't have tails.  SMH  Wake up people.

New techniques for activating dormant genes (Atavism Activation) in birds, such as chickens, has allowed scientists to practice "Reverse Evolution". Very interesting. Book, if anyone's interested: http://books.google.co.uk/books/about/How_to_Build_a_Dinosaur.html?id=8r6srxaLX1QC

I'll repeat myself, since you're obviously blind: I'm a Christian. I'm not a fundamentalist extremist. If that's what you think Christians believe, then you have a very narrow-minded view. @RedlineMMA There has to be some undiscovered creature someone in our huge oceans, like the features most people don. See in the darkest parts of the ocean, there has been a good amount of time for something like a dinosaur to adapt and evolve.
Report spam or abuse
Ohhhhhh would that I could; I would personally annihilate all traces and influence of this stagnant Judeochristian FAILURE and CURSE upon our future. Take your degenerate fiction and fall with it, into the dust; forever. Dogs of scum. Stop with the religious comments! I'm sick of this. Man is becoming God. God = will; the vessel describes her, now everyone should support and be fascinated with the amazing thought of recontstructing these magnificant creatures.
Report spam or abuse
"That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows.", Luke 12:47-48 - And you're conclussion is, that this speaks of God? I think it speaks of society, of capitalism, of slavery. The order of Man. I assume the Bible preaches love, yes. I think we need more of it in this "enlightened world" of ours, with all that's going wrong. My parents are very proud of me. Unlike you, they're not judgemental and narrow-minded :)

There have been feathered Tyrannosaurs that have been found as well.
Report spam or abuse
has anyone ever looked for dinosaurs in a peatbog they have found some very well preserved animals and even a man from the bronze age in one
Report spam or abuse
but they can make a lot of other things like teeth and tail.
Report spam or abuse
All modern birds share a common ancestor and are all more closely related to each other than to any other dinosaur. Modern birds did not evolve from "various types" after the extinction. They were already around when the extinction occurred.

They didn't survive...the critter was dead. DNA is very fragile, but other hydrophobic organic tissues if insulated from the outside world by bone and solid rock can indeed avoid being metabolized by other organisms.

@Blegger1000. Looks like someone is out of a job the

No? I'm pretty sure the chicken came from a T. rex.
Report spam or abuse
they will just create what they think dinosaurs look like. How will they know if it a real dinosaurs or not? maybe its another living thing xD
Report spam or abuse
Report spam or abuse
Because they can only use ,models of DNA and organic molecule degradation are quite faulty seeing as the half life/lifespan of DNA keeps changing, for example it started at 521 years then they sequenced the genes of 700 thousand year old extinct horse and now they say the lifespan is 7 to 6 million years.

@devil4hunt actually most celosaurs (I think I spelt that wrong) and all maniraptors (including birds) were featherd. This includes T-Rex! Also all theropods (theoretically) were warm blooded
Report spam or abuse
If the T-Rex and other dinosaurs mentioned in this lecture are in fact 70 million years old , how did the haem , blood vessels, osteocytes, medullary tissue, proteins etc on the inside of the bone survive ? There's no way that organic material could survive more than a few thousand years, let alone millions of years.
Report spam or abuse
Man chose to destroy the dinosaurs. Read the Book Of Job...also tells us that the Earth is not flat, but is "a blue sphere hanging in the heavens, indeed hanging upon nothing at all." Read about "Behemoth" and "Leviathan." The "Fallen Ones" taught humans "cross-breeding" between the species. This is where T-Rex came from. Does anybody in the secular world know anything about DNA and RNA...Darwin sure didn't! He's an idiot, and his disciples like to "play GOD"...just like they do. Jesus Wins!
