Imagine if kids at school were taught the wisdom Sagan rather than the bullshit of the Bible or the Koran. Imagine how much shallower those rivers of blood would become? Imagine what our species might be inspired to achieve if kids hearts were filled with scientific wonder rather than dogmatic hatred? Us humans are capable of amazing feats when we are inspired and when we free ourselves from the spirit crushing, soul destroying, dehumanising dogma of religious thought. It was this that Carl was able to help achieve, above all he was a teacher and he the thing he taught best of all was for us to wonder, to enquire and to be amazed. The ability to do this isa  rare gift, he will always be missed.

I feel a deep seeded hatred and rage at the constant waste of human life. I focus that hatred and rage towards only those that deserve it based on their ignorance and stupidity. I call myself a Militant Atheist. I refer to myself this way as a result of my intolerance of religion and ignorance. I am learning everyday, more and more reasons to hate specific groups of people. Ranging from Creationists, Religious, Corrupt Politicians, to Extremists of any kind. A hatred for the groups of people that intentionally choose to deny what is painfully obvious based in fact founded by evidence. I am utterly ashamed of and unimaginably loath people like Ken Ham, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachman, Pat Robertson, Rick Warren, Ray Comfort, Joel Olsteen, Sarah Palin, Benny Hinn, and any other that would shove ignorance and nonsense on to people. To justify the abuse and subsequent deaths of so many wasted lives that simply do not conform to their own way of thought is a true disgrace to the human race. I have an intense love and respect for those that intentionally choose to question everything. Even themselves. For people that truly seek knowledge, understanding, and want for a better world. Respect for those who refuse to be distracted by false patriotism, false belief, and undeserved self righteousness. I am awe inspired by people like Neil Tyson, Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins, Bill Maher, Bill Nye, Christopher Hitchens, Emma Goldman, Sam Harris, Lawrence Krauss, Nichola Tesla, Isaac Newton, and all of the truly brilliant minds that have lived, live now, or will live in the future... Leela Alcorn's death could have been avoided absolutely, if not for the rampant ignorance that engulfs humanity. The real shame is that this young woman may have been the person granted a Nobel Peace Prize for curing a specific type of cancer. But as a result of Leela's abuse, neglect, and subsequent death, we will never know. Her self image was a major part of who she was and her own family disgraced her on a level that is wildly inappropriate and so very cruel. Pay attention to what is absolutely true: http://youtu.be/wupToqz1e2g

When I saw Pale Blue Dot Picture in this video. It struck me at how insignificant and humble we human all are. Whenever you try to think at such a big scale, the problems that we face and that we have faced all over our life seem unimaginably small.  The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of Earth taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft at a distance of 3.7 billion miles away.  #EarthDay

Carl Sagan would have been 80 yrs. old today. Celebrate by listening to Carl doing what he did best..  Carl Sagan is one of my heroes in life. His views on life, humanity, our potential for incredible greatness and tremendous destruction. His passing was one of the greatest losses humanity has ever endured but his accomplishments, his legacy of books, lectures, TV shows, and TV appearances continues, to this day, to be an unending source of inspiration for myself, my generation countless others young and old alike.

The first sip from the glass of science teaches us Atheism, but if you reach the bottom of the glass, you find religion. Very few people understand that science and religion literally are intertwined. You can't fully understand one without the other.

So damn profound. He had a way of showing how insignificant we are to the universe, but made it very clear that we, and other living species, are so extremely precious. Carl would've been an amazing human to have met. If only there were more Carl Sagans in this world.
Report spam or abuse
"To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another." So how, then, is it, that Carl has inspired so many people to relentlessly bash religion? Aren't we supposed to respect others' beliefs, no matter how little sense they make to us? I don't think he would have wanted to inspire legions of people to go around saying "RELIGION IS EVIL AND ANYONE WHO BELIEVES IN IT IS STUPID". Actually, it almost seems like those people are following a 'religion' of their own that they simply do not consider to be one- a mindless, unquestioning devotion to science. Science is about challenging beliefs, both those of others AND your own. It's about being open-minded, claiming that something that doesn't make sense to you is impossible is just an ignorant thing to do. After all, the very concept of God means that his existence or non-existence is impossible to prove. Why can't we all at least try to get along? Attacking other people because of what they believe is not helpful at all. It only perpetuates the pointless conflict that Carl sagan was talking about in the first place. It's hypocritical.

+DisgruntledViewer I dont agree completely with your text. And the reason is "The Dark Ages".

Maybe because religion deserves to be bashed. Do not confuse attacking ideas with attacking people. Furthermore Carl Sagan was tremendously civil when he discussed his views on religion and against religious people.

I'm sick of atheists like Sagan twisting scripture to make God out to be a tyrant that was keeping humanity from "knowledge". It was the knowledge of good and evil that God was protecting us from, not knowledge in general. Listen to his pathetic false-humility as he tells listeners that their life is meaningless and they are nothing but evolved apes -- arrogant fool.
Report spam or abuse
I want to add one more point. As Christians, we have to remember that it is us, not the atheist, that has the truth. I've come to realize that debating with atheists about God's existence through reason and logic is pretty much pointless. We have to remember that the natural man, the carnal man, is unable to see the truth. Their understanding has been darkened and confused. The harder their hearts are, the deeper the darkness of their mind. They are literally blind to the truth and only the supernatural power of God can restore their sight. I think Christians have made a huge mistake by accepting scientific "proofs" proposed by atheists in the fields of cosmology and theoretical physics that contradict God's revealed word describing the form and function of the universe. Frankly, I have come to the conclusion that the moon landing was a hoax, and that most of the missions into, and pictures from outer space, are fake. I know that statement is going to be met with incredulity, but I don't care. Christians should not be in the least bit afraid to doubt most of the claims of modern cosmology if they seemingly disprove God's word.

Now Carl Sagan knows everything. Why we exist, what the Universe is and what comes after life. He experienced the reason (maybe god) for our lifes. Or the programmers of our brains that made us just imagine this whole life?? He knows all of that now! And we all will one day!
Report spam or abuse
+David T  It is actually quite easy and extremely liberating.  It doesn't allow for any petty human ideas to infect my conscious because it is literally the broadest perspective one can have and still include themselves.  The cosmos is so large and we so small, in comparison we can easily say we do not exist; just like atoms in comparison to us are small enough to not exist.

Carl Sagan knew he didn't know everything. That's why he pushed so hard to learn more. If you think he knows everything, then you've learned nothing from him.

If you watch our "pale blue dot" from the cold outside, you could say, that life started there some 3,5 billion years ago and that life will stop there in another 0,9 billion years - a nice little intermezzo in space, so what? But if you care a bit more, because you look from the nice, warm inside, you might have the wish to keep it working.

Carl Sagan had the gift of making others feel that, even though they never knew him personally, and nor did he know them, that he was talking directly to them. As if he knew you would be laying in bed, or sitting at your desk, or at your table, looking for answers. Carl Sagan seemed to know this, and offered his answers willingly, and openly. In all of our obscurity, in all of this vastness, the only place our answers come from is from within ourselves. And in all of our searching, the only thing that has made the darkness bearable is each other. And through videos such as this, in a meeting place such as this, we can feel, if only for a mere three and a half minutes, that he is still speaking to us. I didn't plan on crying tonight, but I can't help but feel overwhelmed by the sense of connection, dedication, and pure, unabridged love that extends through the years and directly into my life. Thank you Carl.

A very thought provoking video, indeed. I couldn't help but notice the use of philosophy (Carl Sagan philosophy) to belittle philosophy.  In addition to the philosophical contradictions within the scientific materialism worldview, to begin with, I'm always amused by the pretentious attempts scientific materialists make to try and appear to be above the muddle of "lesser minds".   When I watch this video, I would do well to turn of the audio and contemplate the incredible order of the cosmos, the fine tuning of initial conditions which made it all possible and the extreme extravagance of the age and vastness of it all.
Report spam or abuse
And philosophy is nothing more then pseudo intellectual when assuming that there are metaphysical connections without any form of concrete evidence.

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.
